A Stepwise Evaluation Of Pairing, Shaping, And Nonremoval Of The Spoon For Children With Autism And Feeding Difficulties, Nicole C. Demchuk
A Stepwise Evaluation Of Pairing, Shaping, And Nonremoval Of The Spoon For Children With Autism And Feeding Difficulties, Nicole C. Demchuk
Theses & Dissertations
Feeding difficulties are pervasive for children with autism. The present study investigated the effects of a pairing intervention on cooperation with demands/acceptance of new foods, inappropriate behaviors, proximity to therapist, and indices of happiness for three children with autism and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder. When the pairing intervention alone was not effective to decrease inappropriate behaviors and increase acceptance of new foods, we implemented shaping procedures. Shaping was effective to increase acceptance of four new foods for two participants. For the third participant, we ultimately implemented nonremoval of the spoon procedures to decrease inappropriate behaviors and increase acceptance of …

Impacts Of Diets And Weight On Cognitive Decline Diseases Among The Middle-Aged Populations In Louisiana, Danielle Beamon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cognitive decline is a public health concern since people are living longer, but little is known regarding how to prevent the progression of this condition; furthermore, current treatment options are not always effective after diagnosis. Previous research indicated obesity was associated with diminishing cognitive health, but most studies were conducted on individuals over the age of 65. The purpose of the study was to determine if there is a statistical correlation between cognitive decline and body mass index (BMI) among those between the ages of 40 and 64 years. Data from the 2015-2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Alzheimer’s Disease …

A key challenge in aging research is to extend lifespan in tandem with slowing down functional decline so that the life with good health (healthspan) can be extended. Here, we show that monthly clearance of a small number of cells, which highly express p21Cip1 (p21high), starting from 20 months improves cardiac and metabolic function, and extends both median and maximum lifespan in mice. Importantly, by assessing health and physical function of these mice monthly until death, we show that clearance of p21high cells improves physical function at all remaining stages of life, suggesting healthspan extension. Mechanistically, …
Undocumented And Unsupported: How College Students Navigate To Meet Their Basic Needs, Mario Alberto Gonzalez
Undocumented And Unsupported: How College Students Navigate To Meet Their Basic Needs, Mario Alberto Gonzalez
Master's Theses
The cost of attendance at colleges and universities across the United States has risen exponentially year after year. Among these costs include tuition, lodging, food, textbooks, academic materials, and health care, many of which are considered “basic needs” that are ultimately essential for human survival. At the same time, certain groups of students continue to be marginalized and presented with additional barriers in accessing higher education in equitable ways. Undocumented students are one of these groups of students, and are the focus of this study. Although the passage of DACA in 2012 presented opportunities for approximately 800,000 undocumented students, it …

Somatic mutations in non-malignant tissues are selected for because they confer increased clonal fitness. However, it is uncertain whether these clones can benefit organ health. Here, ultra-deep targeted sequencing of 150 liver samples from 30 chronic liver disease patients revealed recurrent somatic mutations. PKD1 mutations were observed in 30% of patients, whereas they were only detected in 1.3% of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). To interrogate tumor suppressor functionality, we perturbed PKD1 in two HCC cell lines and six in vivo models, in some cases showing that PKD1 loss protected against HCC, but in most cases showing no impact. However, Pkd1 haploinsufficiency …

Inflammation biomarkers can provide valuable insight into the role of inflammatory processes in many diseases and conditions. Sequencing based analyses of such biomarkers can also serve as an exemplar of the genetic architecture of quantitative traits. To evaluate the biological insight, which can be provided by a multi-ancestry, whole-genome based association study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of 21 inflammation biomarkers from up to 38 465 individuals with whole-genome sequencing from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program (with varying sample size by trait, where the minimum sample size was n = 737 for MMP-1). We identified 22 distinct single-variant …

In the wild, C. elegans are emersed in environments teeming with a veritable menagerie of microorganisms. The C. elegans cuticular surface serves as a barrier and first point of contact with their microbial environments. In this study, we identify microbes from C. elegans natural habitats that associate with its cuticle, constituting a simple “skin microbiome.” We rear our animals on a modified CeMbio, mCeMbio, a consortium of ecologically relevant microbes. We first combine standard microbiological methods with an adapted micro skin-swabbing tool to describe the skin-resident bacteria on the C. elegans surface. Furthermore, we conduct 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies …

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
Cholecystitis, inflammation of the gallbladder, is diagnosed in approximately 200,000 people in the US each year. Cocaine is an illicit drug that is wildly abused in the US, GI complications such as acute pancreatitis, colitis, bowel perforation, mesenteric ischemia, and biliary tree obstruction have been reported in limited studies. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reported cases of cocaine-induced cholecystitis and no established treatment plans to date, however, we strongly believe that our patient’s cocaine use resulted in cholecystitis. Hence, we wanted to shed some light on the possible side effects of cocaine on the gall bladder.

Quality Improvement Project: The Bidirectional Relationship Among Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus And Periodontal Disease, Sarah Martinez
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) are at increased risk for oral health conditions such as periodontal disease. Moreover, there is an established bidirectional relationship that has been well documented in the literature among periodontal disease and T2DM. However, oral health is rarely being discussed with patients who have T2DM from the primary care setting. The objective for this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to bridge the gap in this area by assessing the efficacy of implementing an educational program to promote education and awareness in individuals with T2DM who are at risk for periodontal disease. This …

MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The gut microbiota plays a major role in human diseases. The impact of these microbes on human health comes not only from individual microbes but also from their interactions with each other. A prime example of this is Clostridioides difficile, an intestinal pathobiont that causes severe gastrointestinal illness. C. difficile works cooperatively with other gut bacteria, including Klebsiella pneumoniae. We hypothesized that K. pneumoniae would work synergistically with C. difficile and promote its pathogenesis. We screened over 40 K. pneumoniae strains to assess their interaction with the intestinal mucus layer, a key colonization site for C. difficile. …

Recentering Community Nutrition Education: A New Framework For Food Insecurity Understanding, Chasity Tompkins
Journal of Extension
While strategies may differ across geographical regions, FACS Extension professionals work to enhance nutrition education and increase food security in their communities. The four dimensions of food security developed by The Food and Agricultural Organization were reconceptualized to understand food security on an individual or at a community level. Using experiences from a summer internship with two urban counties, the EEUESA Model described here was designed to aid FACS Extension professionals in their efforts for nutrition education and to better understand how programming targets food security in their communities.

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(5): 1038-1055, 2024. Many university students, especially graduate students, are experiencing poor physical and psychological health. Thus, universities are initiating programs like Exercise is Medicine-On Campus (EIM-OC) to promote positive physical activity behavior to improve physical and mental health for primarily undergraduate university students. However, the influences on physical activity when transitioning from an undergraduate to a graduate student are unknown. To explore perceptions of if and how the physical activity levels of graduate students changed from their time as undergraduate students while considering environmental and lifestyle factors. METHODS: Using a qualitative, phenomenological research design, …
A Study On The Promising Ecotypes Of Secale Montaanum Guss., Bahram Peymani-Fard
A Study On The Promising Ecotypes Of Secale Montaanum Guss., Bahram Peymani-Fard
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Secale montamum (mountain rye) has been identified as a well-adapted species for rehabilitation of the substeppic rangelands of Iran. Further investigation on the quality and quantity values of different ecotypes of this species was required. The main objective of this study was to determine phenological stages, herbage yield and protein percentage of the promising native ecotypes of Secale montanum. This research was conducted on 7 ecotypes in which early growth started in late April and heading occurred in late May. Comparison of the 4-year total herbage yield indicated significant differences among the ecotypes, Secale momtanum (10091), which was the previously …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Daily gains of cattle grazing Mott elephantgrass (MB; Pennisteum purpureIum Schum.) arc approximately twice those obtained on other warm-season perennial grasses grown in Florida, USA, but plant characteristics responsible for the high forage quality of MB have not been identified. Three experiments were conducted during 1987- 1991 to determine factors that explain the high forage quality of MB and to assess the quality potential of P. purpureum x P. glaucum (L.) [R.Br.J x clephantgrass hybrids. Higher organic matter (OM) digestibility and intake of MB than Pensacola bahiagrass (PB; Paspalum nonatum Flugge) were associated with a lesser percentage of sclercnchyma (1.6 …
