Could Measuring Factors Other Than A Lack Of Financial Resources Help In Achieving The Zero Hunger Goal, Jillian Hyink, Brandon R. Mcfadden, Brandy E. Phipps, Craig Gundersen

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

The second Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger, defined by the United Nations, broadly focuses on several dimensions of food access and availability, including measures of hunger and undernourishment, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Progress toward the Zero Hunger goal is monitored using indicators like the Prevalence of Undernourishment and the prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity. These indicators are widely regarded as accurately portraying the underlying phenomena of concern. There are, however, other considerations one may want to include when considering the broader food system, including the role of food access and sovereignty in the rural areas of low-income …

Of Geese And Grass: Investigating Impacts Of Brant Grazing On Eeelgrass, Dakota L. Osborne Sep 2024

Of Geese And Grass: Investigating Impacts Of Brant Grazing On Eeelgrass, Dakota L. Osborne

Master's Theses

Grazing pressure is important in structuring plant communities, particularly in aquatic environments. Eelgrass (Zostera marina), a keystone species in estuaries across North America, is experiencing widespread population declines. As a keystone species, eelgrass provides numerous important functions, including: 1) water filtration, 2) sediment stabilization, 3) providing refuge and nursery habitat for numerous species, and 4) carbon sequestration. Benefits which could be lost if eelgrass beds continue to diminish. California has experienced some of the greatest eelgrass declines, and Morro Bay, CA experienced a 96% decrease in eelgrass from 2007 to 2017. Most studies to date have examined bottom-up …

School of Health Professions

Co-production is a collaborative way of working which emphasises the exchange of diverse forms of knowledge in an equal partnership for equal benefits. Co-produced research is a key strategic aim of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Transforming UK Food Systems (TUKFS) Strategic Priorities Fund; this research programme brings together researchers, policymakers, industry and communities to create positive change in the way food is produced, accessed and consumed. However, more generally, there are diverse understandings of co-production and a lack of consensus on what ‘good practice’ looks like. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and map examples of co-production methods …

Background: Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is common in patients with advanced gynecologic and gastrointestinal cancers. Frequently, patients with PC undergo palliative surgery or procedures to manage disease-related complications and side effects. However, there are limited data regarding patients' and family caregivers' decision-making processes about these procedures. Thus, we sought to describe the decision-making experiences of patients with PC who elect to pursue palliative surgical procedures and their family caregivers.

Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of qualitative data collected during a pilot randomized controlled trial of BOLSTER, a nurse-led telehealth intervention for patients with PC and their caregivers after an acute …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Telomerase is associated with cellular aging, and its presence limits cellular lifespan. Telomerase by preventing telomere shortening can extend the number of cell divisions for cancer cells. In adult pancreatic cells, telomeres gradually shorten, while in precancerous lesions of cancer, telomeres in cells are usually significantly shortened. At this time, telomerase is still in an inactive state, and it is not until before and after the onset of cancer that telomerase is reactivated, causing cancer cells to proliferate. Methylation of the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter and regulation of telomerase by lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB) is the mechanism of telomerase …

While lysine methylation is well-known for regulating gene expression transcriptionally, its implications in translation have been largely uncharted. Trimethylation at lysine 22 (K22me3) on RPL40, a core ribosomal protein located in the GTPase activation center, was first reported 27 years ago. Yet, its methyltransferase and role in translation remain unexplored. Here, we report that SMYD5 has robust in vitro activity toward RPL40 K22 and primarily catalyzes RPL40 K22me3 in cells. The loss of SMYD5 and RPL40 K22me3 leads to reduced translation output and disturbed elongation as evidenced by increased ribosome collisions. SMYD5 and RPL40 K22me3 are upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma …

Calcium Rescues Streptococcus Pneumoniae D39 Δmnte Manganese-Sensitive Growth Phenotype, Reuben Opoku, Edgar Carrasco, Nicholas R De Lay, Julia E Martin Sep 2024

Calcium Rescues Streptococcus Pneumoniae D39 Δmnte Manganese-Sensitive Growth Phenotype, Reuben Opoku, Edgar Carrasco, Nicholas R De Lay, Julia E Martin

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Calcium (Ca2+) functions as a universal signal messenger in eukaryotes but in bacteria, the physiological roles for Ca2+ are limited. Here, we examine the role of Ca2+ in Streptococcus pneumoniae during manganese (Mn2+) intoxication. S. pneumoniae mntE mutants, lacking the Mn2+ efflux transporter, exhibit impaired growth due to accumulation of Mn2+ when exposed to elevated exogenous Mn2+. This Mn2+-sensitive growth defect is restored to wild-type growth level by exogenous Ca2+, in a Ca2+-dependent manner. Despite growth restoration of the mntE mutant to wild-type levels, cellular Mn2+ remains elevated in this strain. Bacterial capsule production is also increased for the mntE …

Enhancing Electronic Agriculture Data Security With A Blockchain-Based Search Method And E-Signatures, Duaa Hammoud Tahayur, Mishall Al-Zubaidie

Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity

The production of digital signatures with blockchain constitutes a prerequisite for the security of electronic agriculture applications (EAA), such as the Internet of Things (IoT). To prevent irresponsibility within the blockchain, attackers regularly attempt to manipulate or intercept data stored or sent via EAA-IoT. Additionally, cybersecurity has not received much attention recently because IoT applications are still relatively new. As a result, the protection of EAAs against security threats remains insufficient. Moreover, the security protocols used in contemporary research are still insufficient to thwart a wide range of threats. For these security issues, first, this study proposes a security system …

Synthesis, Characterization And Antimicrobial Activity Of New 4-Aminoantipyrine Derivatives Using Ultrasonic Mediation, Naween M. Youns

Baghdad Science Journal

A straightforward, one-pot, three-component reaction between substituted aromatic aldehydes, 2-naphthol and 4- aminoantipyrine have been used to synthesis a series of new 4-(((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl) (phenyl) methylene) amino)-1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1,2-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one derivatives (A1- A5). This reaction was carried out with zirconyl chloride (ZrOCl2.8H2O) as an efficient catalyst under the condition of ultrasound irradiation. The fact that these derivatives have the potential to act as building blocks in the production of new compounds makes them very essential 4-(1-phenyl-1H-naphtho[1,2-e] [1,3] oxazin-2(3H)-yl)- 1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1,2-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one derivatives (A6, A7 and A8). Likewise, the MCRs that resulted in the formation of hetero cyclic compound (1,3-naphthoxazine) and included 4-aminoantipyrine, formaldehyde, and 2-naphthol in …

The Association Of Glycated Hemoglobin And Lipid Profile With Peripheral Artery Disease In Metabolic Syndrome Patients From Northwestern Algeria, Imane Bouragba, Mustapha Diaf, Sarra Souiah, Asmaa Melih, Attouya Mellali

Baghdad Science Journal

Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was incorporated as an indicator of dysglycemia, as opposed to fasting glycaemia, for the purpose of classifying patients based on their vascular incidents. This choice was made due to HbA1c's robust correlation with vascular factors like pulse wave velocity, intima media thickness, and the albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR). However, the relationship between HbA1c and lipid profile in developing artery disease remain uncertain. We set out to investigate the association of HbA1c and lipid profile with peripheral artery diseases (PAD) in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in north-western Algeria. Our cross sectional study was carried out during six months. …

There is growing attention to community-based services for preventing adverse health care outcomes among people aging with dementia. We explored whether the availability of dementia-centered programming within older adult centers (ie, senior centers)—specifically, adult day services (ADS), social adult day centers (SADCs), memory cafes, and caregiver support—is associated with reduced hospitalization, emergency room use, and total Medicare costs for community-dwelling individuals ages 75 and older with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), and whether associations differ by the relative size of the local jurisdiction. We used a novel dataset that links Medicare claims data with data from an organizational census …

Bioengineering Of Intestinal Grafts, Madushani Herath, Allison L Speer

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Intestinal failure manifests as an impaired capacity of the intestine to sufficiently absorb vital nutrients and electrolytes essential for growth and well-being in pediatric and adult populations. Although parenteral nutrition remains the mainstay therapeutic approach, the pursuit of a definitive and curative strategy, such as regenerative medicine, is imperative. Substantial advancements in the field of engineered intestinal tissues present a promising avenue for addressing intestinal failure; nevertheless, extensive research is still necessary for effective translation from experimental benchwork to clinical bedside applications.
