Therapeutics For Sickle Cell Disease Intravascular Hemolysis, Jianyao Xue, Xiang-An Li Sep 2024

Therapeutics For Sickle Cell Disease Intravascular Hemolysis, Jianyao Xue, Xiang-An Li

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder predominantly affecting individuals of African descent, with a significant global health burden. SCD is characterized by intravascular hemolysis, driven by the polymerization of mutated hemoglobin within red blood cells (RBCs), leading to vascular inflammation, organ damage, and heme toxicity. Clinical manifestations include acute pain crises, hemolytic anemia, and multi-organ dysfunction, imposing substantial morbidity and mortality challenges. Current therapeutic strategies mitigate these complications by increasing the concentration of RBCs with normal hemoglobin via transfusion, inducing fetal hemoglobin, restoring nitric oxide signaling, inhibiting platelet-endothelium interaction, and stabilizing hemoglobin in its oxygenated state. While hydroxyurea …

Food Insecurity Cost Estimates For El Paso: 2023, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Gregory S. Schober, Steven L. Fullerton, Eva Moya

Border Region Modeling Project

Food insecurity is a fairly pervasive problem throughout the United States that is especially burdensome for low-income regions. While the latter is generally recognized, there have been very few efforts to quantify the dollar costs of food insecurity, especially at the regional level. This study attempts to do so for El Paso County, Texas. This is achieved by first adjusting for inflation cost estimates in a prior national level study. Regional differences with respect to the nation are then utilized to calculate comparable costs for El Paso. Results indicate that the economic damage wrought by food insecurity in El Paso …

Examining The Experiences Of College Students Simulating The Community Worker Role In The Community Action Poverty Simulation, Jessica M. Limbrick, Portia Johnson, Sheri Worthy, Diann C. Moorman, Leigh Anne Aaron

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Poverty is a pervasive issue impacting many areas of human sciences and Extension. Individuals living in the United States may have varying attitudes toward poverty. Research has shown that poverty simulations are effective in modifying attitudes toward poverty. The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) program is one such example that exposes its participants to the lived realities of poverty in the United States. While research on CAPS is plentiful, little research has examined the experiences of those who simulated the community worker role. This research explored the experiences of students who simulated community worker roles during a CAPS simulation. This …

Not Feeling The Heat? Effects Of Dietary Protein On Satiation And Satiety In Mice Are Not Due To Its Impact On Body Temperature, Jazmin Osorio M, Sharon E Mitchell, Catherine Hambly, David B Allison, John R Speakman Sep 2024

Not Feeling The Heat? Effects Of Dietary Protein On Satiation And Satiety In Mice Are Not Due To Its Impact On Body Temperature, Jazmin Osorio M, Sharon E Mitchell, Catherine Hambly, David B Allison, John R Speakman

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Dietary protein modulates food intake (FI) via unclear mechanism(s). One possibility is that higher protein leads to greater post-ingestive heat production (Specific dynamic action: SDA) leading to earlier meal termination (increased satiation), and inhibition of further intake (increased satiety). The influence of dietary protein on feeding behaviour in C57BL/6J mice was tested using an automated FI monitoring system (BioDAQ), simultaneous to body temperature (Tb). Total FI, inter meal intervals (IMI, satiety) and meal size (MS, satiation) were related to changes in Tb after consuming low (5%, LP), moderate (15%, MP) and high (30%, HP) protein diets. Diets were tested over …

The Link Between People's Social Perceptions Of Cultivated Meat Eaters And Their Acceptance Of Cultivated Meat, Xiaoyu Dai, Angela K. Y. Leung, Mark Chong Sep 2024

The Link Between People's Social Perceptions Of Cultivated Meat Eaters And Their Acceptance Of Cultivated Meat, Xiaoyu Dai, Angela K. Y. Leung, Mark Chong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Low consumer acceptance emerges as one important barrier to the introduction of cultivated meat, a novel food which offers an opportunity for more sustainable and ethical meat production. Due to the motives for impression management and self-esteem, one factor that could contribute to people's acceptance of cultivated meat is their perceptions of other individuals who consume cultivated meat. In the current research, two online survey studies with 393 Singaporean undergraduate students and 401 American adults were conducted to explore the perceptions of cultivated meat eaters. In both studies, participants were randomly assigned to read one of three profiles that described …

A Two-Stage Matheuristic For The Home Healthcare Routing And Scheduling Problem With Perishable Products, Aldy Gunawan, Nabila Yuraisyah Salsabila, Vincent F. Yu, Pham Kien Minh Nguyen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This study proposes a home healthcare routing and scheduling problem, where perishable products such as medicines, vaccines, or meals must be provided for some patients’ treatments. This problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). A two-stage matheuristic is then developed as the solution approach. The first stage is a local search to solve the nurse routing problem, and the second stage is run as the relaxed MILP to solve the scheduling problem. The matheuristic is tested on newly generated instances and compared with the results of CPLEX. The proposed matheuristic is able to obtain CPLEX solutions within …

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This working paper provides commentary on my 2023 peer review panel comments on the 2023 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-4. The Prologue section introduces my official peer review comments and indicates how the structure of my comments was tailored to the guidelines established by the OMB. The main section consists of my 2023 peer review comments as they were submitted to OMB. I recommended changes in the draft Circular A-4 to increase the discount rate from the 1.7% rate that OMB proposed, to report domestic benefits whenever global benefits are reported, to adopt a behavioral transfer test …

Son Preference In India, Susan May Watts Sep 2024

Son Preference In India, Susan May Watts

Ballard Brief

Son preference, based on the belief that sons are more valuable than daughters, creates environments where girls are neglected and discriminated against all over the world. India has one of the strongest cultures of son preference, as evidenced by its abnormal sex ratio at birth (SRB) of 110 boys born for every 100 girls. Son preference in India is caused by cultural norms placing sons in positions of importance, as sons are tasked with performing funeral rites for parents, supporting parents financially, and taking care of their parents in their old age. Additionally, having daughters is a financial burden on …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Liver regeneration is under metabolic and immune regulation. Despite increasing recognition of the involvement of neutrophils in regeneration, it is unclear how the liver signals to the bone marrow to release neutrophils after injury and how reparative neutrophils signal to hepatocytes to reenter the cell cycle. Here we report that loss of the liver tumour suppressor Lifr in mouse hepatocytes impairs, whereas overexpression of leukaemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR) promotes liver repair and regeneration after partial hepatectomy or toxic injury. In response to physical or chemical damage to the liver, LIFR from hepatocytes promotes the secretion of cholesterol and CXCL1 …
