Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (Wks) And Deficits Associated With Memory: An Introduction For Clinical And Forensic Professionals, Jerrod Brown, Charlotte Gergh Haanen, Matthew D. Krasowski, Deborah A. Eckberg, Cameron R. Wiley

Forensic Scholars Today

Chronic alcohol abuse has been shown to lead to a number of cognitive, behavioral, and developmental deficits. One of the possible consequences of this abuse is Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS), a condition characterized by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1) that impairs various neurological functions, particularly memory and its various stages (i.e., storage and retrieval). Management of WKS requires a deeper understanding of memory processing as well as carefully structured therapy methods that cater to the unique needs of impacted individuals. Therefore, accurate and reliable identification coupled with early intervention strategies for this population is a clinical and forensic priority.

Cognition And Inflammation In Youth With Perinatal Hiv, Megan Niehaus, Julie Mannarino, Jacob Bolzenius, Tori Frerichs, Robert Paul Sep 2024

Cognition And Inflammation In Youth With Perinatal Hiv, Megan Niehaus, Julie Mannarino, Jacob Bolzenius, Tori Frerichs, Robert Paul

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Background: Perinatally acquired HIV (PHIV) remains a major global health challenge. Approximately 90% of the global population of PHIV reside in low- or middle-income countries (LMICs) where access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains incomplete, particularly for PHIV. With PHIV, the brain is exposed to the virus during critical periods of brain development without the immunological benefits from ART. Unlike adults with horizontally acquired HIV whose nadir CD4+ Tcell count is a strong correlate of cognitive difficulties that persist after sustained use of ART, cognitive symptoms among PHIV youth are independent of traditional HIV disease metrics. Prior studies indicate that PHIV …

No. 05: Pandemic Precarity And Food Insecurity Among Zimbabwean Migrants In South Africa, Godfrey Tawodzera, Jonathan Crush

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

This policy brief highlights the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Zimbabwean migrants living in South Africa, with a particular focus on food insecurity and economic precarity. The pandemic exacerbated existing vulnerabilities within the migrant community, many of whom rely on informal, low-wage labour sectors for their livelihoods. The survey conducted in 2021 among Zimbabwean migrants revealed widespread unemployment, drastic income reductions, and severe food insecurity, primarily driven by pandemic-related restrictions and the resultant economic contraction. Zimbabwean migrants, a significant proportion of whom work in South Africa’s informal economy, were disproportionately affected by the lockdowns and mobility restrictions. The …

Parental Perceptions Of Child Neglect And Triggering Factors, Magaly Jeanty Arthus Sep 2024

Parental Perceptions Of Child Neglect And Triggering Factors, Magaly Jeanty Arthus

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Child neglect is the most widely reported and substantiated form of maltreatment in the United States. Although the federal government establishes the minimal definition, acts, and behaviors that comprise child neglect, there are discrepancies at the national, state, local, and organizational levels in how child neglect is defined. The purpose of this study was to increase the understanding of how parents perceive the definition of child neglect and the factors they believe trigger it. Using the social cognitive theory as the theoretical foundation, the generic qualitative research design was used to explore the perceptions of child neglect and beliefs of …

The Food Environment Of Female Athletes Attending Historically Black Colleges And Universities: A Qualitative Study On The Dimensions Of Food Access And Nutrition, Na Uriegas, Zk Winkelmann, Dm Emerson

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Context: Student-athletes are a subset of college students who face additional stressors related to the demands of their sport and academic workload. The food choices of student-athletes may be influenced by the unique food environment they are in. Further challenges may present for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) student-athletes as their institutions tend to be in low food access areas. We aimed to assess food security and explore the lived experiences of HBCU female student-athletes surrounding their food environment and ability to access food based on the five dimensions of food access: availability, accessibility, affordability, accommodation, and acceptability. Methods: …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Cisplatin is a common anticancer drug, but its frequent nephrotoxicity limits its clinical use. Small GTP-binding protein GDP dissociation stimulator (smgGDS), a small GTPase chaperone protein, was considerably downregulated during cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (CDDP-AKI), especially in renal tubular epithelial cells. SmgGDS-knockdown mice was established and found that smgGDS knockdown promoted CDDP-AKI, as demonstrated by an increase in serum creatine, blood urea nitrogen levels and the appearance of tubular patterns. RNA sequencing suggested that protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase (PERK), which bridges mitochondria-associated ER membranes, was involved in smgGDS knockdown following CDDP-AKI, and then identified that smgGDS knockdown increased phosphorylated-PERK …

How Does Your Garden Grow? Development Of A Calculator To Evaluate The Economic And Dietary Impact Of Edible Gardens, Sofia O. Sanchez, Katie Funderburk, Erin Reznicek, Sondra M. Parmer Sep 2024

How Does Your Garden Grow? Development Of A Calculator To Evaluate The Economic And Dietary Impact Of Edible Gardens, Sofia O. Sanchez, Katie Funderburk, Erin Reznicek, Sondra M. Parmer

Journal of Extension

Edible gardens can increase fruit and vegetable availability and access. Weighing produce is a method to evaluate gardens, however there are limited methods that translate garden yields to dietary yields and that document Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) garden yields. We developed a Garden Harvest Calculator to evaluate edible garden economic and dietary impact. Over three spring-to-summer growing seasons, 12 – 18 gardens produced 6,499 pounds of produce worth $11,606.95. This equates to 24,922 cups, enough for 4,984 adults to meet dietary recommendations. SNAP-Ed supported gardens may positively contribute to dietary needs while reducing barriers to food access.

Homeless Individuals’ Experiences Of Access To Personal Hygiene And Sanitary Products And Processes During Menstruation, Chele Taylor-Jennifer Sep 2024

Homeless Individuals’ Experiences Of Access To Personal Hygiene And Sanitary Products And Processes During Menstruation, Chele Taylor-Jennifer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Homelessness and period (menstruation) poverty are recurring global phenomena. In the United States, approximately 220,000 women experience homelessness annually. Studies have shown that approximately 35% of individuals who menstruate experience period poverty while living in Baltimore, Maryland. The theoretical foundation was Wollstonecraft‘s theory of feminism. To better understand this phenomenon, a general qualitative study was conducted using semistructured interviews with 18 people who were once homeless while menstruating. Through data collection and analysis, five themes emerged: (a) women have had to find creative ways of addressing menstruation; (b) women have had to find creative ways of addressing the personal hygiene …

Increasing Public Participation In Municipal Solid Waste Reduction, Elizabeth J. O’Connell Sep 2024

Increasing Public Participation In Municipal Solid Waste Reduction, Elizabeth J. O’Connell

The Geographical Bulletin

Municipal solid waste (MSW) presents environmental, social, and economic problems. Enlisting the public in reducing MSW has proven to be difficult in a variety of cultures and economies. Although the waste diversion practice of recycling is well-known, other waste minimization behaviors remain unknown and unpracticed by the majority of the population. There is room for improvement in waste minimization and waste diversion participation. This paper examines research into what motivates and what hinders participation in waste diversion and minimization practices by drawing out the common factors found in a wide spectrum of studies. Fear of the actual and perceived dangers …

Evidence And Mechanisms Of Embodiment In The Developing Dentition, Valerie Sgheiza Sep 2024

Evidence And Mechanisms Of Embodiment In The Developing Dentition, Valerie Sgheiza

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Existing research supports both embodiment of stress through epigenetics and epigenetic impacts on dental development. Two models for embodiment of stress in dental development are proposed. Stress-delay proposes that increased stress during development will produce delays in dental development. Inflammation-acceleration proposes that increased stress will produce faster dental development through inflammatory pathways. These models were tested on dental development scores from the New Mexico Decedent Image Database by using non-accidental manner of death (homicide, suicide, and natural) as a proxy for elevated stress exposure during life and cadaver BMI percentile as a proxy for living BMI. Sex was treated as …

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The objective of the present literature review is to examine how the humanitarian crisis of migrant death at the U.S.-Mexico border epitomizes the antemortem and postmortem dimensions of structural violence and the lasting effects it can have on the human body. After describing the ongoing migrant death crisis, we review embodiment constructs in biological anthropology pertaining to structural violence and marginalization across the life course. We then survey studies examining skeletal and dental biomarkers of structural violence as embodied in migrant populations, including oral pathology, dental modifications, porotic hyperostosis, cribra orbitalia, enamel hypoplasia, cranial fluctuating asymmetry, vertebral neural canal size, …

The Foodpunk City: Advancing Portland's Food Security Through A Shared Ideology Of Adaptation & Resistance, Nickolas Hash Sep 2024

The Foodpunk City: Advancing Portland's Food Security Through A Shared Ideology Of Adaptation & Resistance, Nickolas Hash

Dissertations and Theses

Food injustice is a form of violence perpetrated by state and corporate actors against a constituency under their governing power, particularly impacting marginalized and impoverished communities. It denies individuals access to nutritious food, perpetuating cycles of poverty, inequality, physical health risks, and social exclusion. Grassroots movements have emerged to challenge dominant paradigms and advocate for food sovereignty, agroecology, and food anarchy. In Portland, the movement represents a nontraditional approach to food security that closely resembles the reactionary ideology of urban "punk" culture. Both groups prioritize community autonomy over food systems, sustainable agricultural practices, and resistance to oppressive structures that perpetuate …

Embodiment In Anthropological Epigenetics Research, Sana Saboowala, Meredith A. Wilson, Sahara Z. Vilchis, Mary P. Rogers-Lavanne

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

This paper reviews literature in human epigenetic research as a case study in order to examine and critique the dominant framework of embodiment as unidirectional or bidirectional and mechanistically driven. We identify three major critiques to this approach: 1) A treatment of epigenetic traits as a mechanism of embodiment, rather than one of the multidirectional components of the dynamic and ongoing embodiment process; 2) A tendency to view changing epigenetic traits as both the cause and solution for embodied social inequalities rather than examining the need for systemic change; and 3) A loss of the complexity of varied lived experiences …

A Clinician’S Perspective On The New Organ Mesentery And Non-Vascular Mesenteropathies, Monjur Ahmed

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

Mesentery was discovered as a new organ in 2017. It is a continuous membranous tissue from the duodenojejunal flexure to the anorectal junction. It has distinct anatomy, physiology, and disease states. Primary mesenteropathies include vascular and non-vascular diseases. Some of them are common, and some of them are rarely seen in clinical practice. Secondary mesenteropathies occur when infection or malignancy in another organ spreads to the mesentery. Each entity has specific diagnostic and treatment protocols. Increased awareness of different mesenteropathies and an understanding of their various presentations at different stages of life can help in early diagnosis and improved clinical …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The urgent need for real-time and noninvasive monitoring of health-associated biochemical parameters has motivated the development of wearable sweat sensors. Existing electrochemical sensors show promise in real-time analysis of various chemical biomarkers. These sensors often rely on labels and redox probes to generate and amplify the signals for the detection and quantification of analytes with limited sensitivity. In this study, we introduce a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based biochemical sensor to quantify a molecular biomarker in sweat using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which eliminates the need for labels or redox probes. The molecularly imprinted biosensor can achieve sensitive and specific detection of …
