Our audience of implementation was Belizean generalist providers (nurses and physicians).

Length of curriculum: 8-10 hours.

Introduction: Early recognition and stabilization of critical pediatric patients can improve outcomes. Compared with resource-rich systems, many low-resource settings (i.e., LMICs) rely on generalists to provide most pediatric acute care. We created a curriculum for general practitioners comprising multiple educational modules focused on identifying and stabilizing …

Forest For The Trees: Collective Accountability And Trust As Groundwork For Systems Change, Shaady Salehi, Pia Infante Oct 2024

Forest For The Trees: Collective Accountability And Trust As Groundwork For Systems Change, Shaady Salehi, Pia Infante

The Foundation Review

Since 2020, trust-based philanthropy has gained momentum as a strategy to alleviate inherent power imbalances between funders, nonprofits, and the communities they serve. The cornerstone of the approach is a set of grantmaking practices, such as multiyear unrestricted funding and streamlined paperwork, that support nonprofit self-determination toward achieving impact goals.

At a deeper level, trust-based philanthropy is driven by core values that position funders as collaborators and supporters working alongside nonprofits to advance a more just and equitable society. This requires a radically different stance on accountability from conventional philanthropic norms. Rather than reinforcing a sense of one-way transactional accountability, …

In a time of uncertainty, teachers have been the backbone of the educational world. They provide a sense of consistency to many students who may need positive role models in their life. Teachers take on roles as caregivers, educators, friends, and are often a “safe place” for students. Yet, how have teachers been supported during times of crisis? With the recent COVID-19 pandemic shifting the world of education, elementary school teachers have had to adapt to new changes within their daily work environment. From transitioning to immediate virtual learning and returning to in-person learning with safety protocols, understanding teacher self-efficacy …

Information Exchange Through Social Networks Links To Adoption Of Child Feeding Practices In Nepal, Mohammad Masudur Rahman Oct 2024

Information Exchange Through Social Networks Links To Adoption Of Child Feeding Practices In Nepal, Mohammad Masudur Rahman

Theses and Dissertations

While there have been notable decreases in child undernutrition (i.e., stunting) over the past few decades, it remains a major concern in Nepal, with 25% of children under the age of five experiencing chronic undernourishment. There is considerable scope for improving nutrition-related behaviors to address this ongoing issue. In Nepal, knowledge regarding appropriate child feeding practices is often inadequate, and thus additional sources of accurate information are required. Information through multiple sources (i.e., interpersonal communication, mass media, and mobile SMS) provides opportunity to reach households who inadequately practice childcare. Information improves knowledge and information exchange (i.e., receiving or sharing) usually …

Brain function requires a constant supply of glucose. However, the brain has no known energy stores, except for glycogen granules in astrocytes. In the present study, we report that continuous oligodendroglial lipid metabolism provides an energy reserve in white matter tracts. In the isolated optic nerve from young adult mice of both sexes, oligodendrocytes survive glucose deprivation better than astrocytes. Under low glucose, both axonal ATP levels and action potentials become dependent on fatty acid β-oxidation. Importantly, ongoing oligodendroglial lipid degradation feeds rapidly into white matter energy metabolism. Although not supporting high-frequency spiking, fatty acid β-oxidation in mitochondria and oligodendroglial …

In Or Out?: Understanding The Japanese Immigration Policymaking Process And The Sub-National Response To The Challenge Of Global Migration, Jeorge G. Alarcon Jr. Oct 2024

In Or Out?: Understanding The Japanese Immigration Policymaking Process And The Sub-National Response To The Challenge Of Global Migration, Jeorge G. Alarcon Jr.

Journal Article

There is no comprehensive Japanese immigration policy. The central government has refused to formally acknowledge a need for an immigration policy, viewing immigrants as a threat to public order and cultural homogeneity. Despite this, local governments still need to address the needs of their foreign residents and maintain the peace in the local communities. Some of these policies dovetail with each other; others have no counterpart on the other level of governance. What one can then observe with the national government in Tokyo and the local governments instead is a patchwork that involves some tangential, but for the main part, …

Ambrosia Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Responses To Ice Storm Damage In Mesic, Mixed Deciduous Forests In Southeast Ohio, United States, Christopher J. Hayes, Richard M. Turcotte

The Great Lakes Entomologist

In the eastern United States abiotic forest disturbances are common and cause extensive tree damage. Freshly broken trees and tree branches attract bark and ambrosia beetles that utilize inner bark and xylem of damaged branches and trees to fill requisite habitat needs. An ice storm in February 2003 on the Wayne National Forest presented an opportunity to study the local ambrosia beetle species and their reaction to this storm event. Ethanol baited Lindgren traps were deployed from 2003-2006 starting in the summer after the storm. Eight native and introduced Scolytinae ambrosia beetle species were trapped in large numbers (>500 …

Phenology And Host Choice Among Common Yet Little Understood Wood Borers (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) In A Midwestern Savanna, Noah I. Finney, Derek W. Rosenberger

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Horned powder-post beetles (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) are a geographically widespread family of wood-boring beetles. While members of this family represent important grain pests, are often intercepted in ports, and may play an important role in ecosystem processes, little work has investigated bostrichid life history in their native ranges. This gap limits our ability to assess ecosystem services and invasiveness. Three native species, Amphicerus bicaudatus (Say), Scobicia bidentata (Horn), and Xylobiops basilaris (Say), are commonly found in savannas in Northern Illinois. Although little is currently known about the life history of S. bidentata, A. bicaudatus and X. basilaris can be minor pests …
