Does Restricting Access To Credit Affect Learning Outcomes? Evidence From A Regulatory Shock To Microfinance In India, Muneer Kalliyil, Soham Sahoo Oct 2024

Does Restricting Access To Credit Affect Learning Outcomes? Evidence From A Regulatory Shock To Microfinance In India, Muneer Kalliyil, Soham Sahoo

Working Papers

This study examines how restricted access to microfinance by households affects children’s learning outcomes, utilizing a unique natural experiment that halted all microfinance operations in Andhra Pradesh (AP), India, in 2010. The analysis exploits quasi-random variation in district-level exposure to the shock in states other than AP, as the regulation affected lenders’ liquidity nationwide. Using difference in-differences and event study designs, we find a significant and persistent decline in children’s learning outcomes. The restoration of credit access does not fully reverse these effects, highlighting the long-term consequences of short-term financial disruptions. As plausible mechanisms, we find a shift in enrollment …

Spot Form Net Blotch And Its Management In Barley, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Oct 2024

Spot Form Net Blotch And Its Management In Barley, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Grains and other field crops factsheets

Spot form net blotch (SFNB) has become increasingly more common in Western Australia (WA) due to the widespread cultivation of susceptible varieties, such as Spartacus CL and RGT Planet.

These crops generate large amounts of inoculum, which is carried between seasons on infected stubble. Crops grown onto or located close to infected stubble are at greatest risk of infection. The disease can be effectively managed using a combination of varietal selection, crop rotation, and fungicides.

The Stepped Care Model: A Flexible, Integrative, Transdiagnostic Approach To Counseling, Justin Jacques, Nick R. Abel

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

The stepped care model (SCM) is a healthcare approach in which patients and providers collaborate to select interventions and adjust the level of care over time based on outcomes. The approach is widely used in primary healthcare and becoming increasingly prevalent in busy mental health settings such as community clinics and university counseling centers. This manuscript provides a brief overview of SCM, its utility in counseling, and some core features of the approach including an emphasis on client readiness for change, common factors in counseling outcomes, an integrative or eclectic approach to treatment, and a transdiagnostic understanding of mental health …

How Older Adult Siblings Manage Privacy And Privacy Turbulence On Facebook, Cris Hay-Merchant

Communications Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This qualitative study aimed to explore the lived experiences of older adult siblings who participate and engage with their siblings and other family members on Facebook. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 14 baby boomers who have adult siblings they are connected to on Facebook. Thematic analysis was used to identify common themes in the data. Six main themes emerged: (1) Facebook is just one choice in a world of varied communication choices, (2) new family roles come with new “rules” for their behavior, (3) conflicts still exist inside and outside the family, 4) with appreciation for seeing what’s …

Forecasting The Effects Of Smoking Prevalence Scenarios On Years Of Life Lost And Life Expectancy From 2022 To 2050: A Systematic Analysis For The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2021, Gbd 2021 Tobacco Forecasting Collaborators

Ateneo School of Government Publications

Background

Smoking is the leading behavioural risk factor for mortality globally, accounting for more than 175 million deaths and nearly 4·30 billion years of life lost (YLLs) from 1990 to 2021. The pace of decline in smoking prevalence has slowed in recent years for many countries, and although strategies have recently been proposed to achieve tobacco-free generations, none have been implemented to date. Assessing what could happen if current trends in smoking prevalence persist, and what could happen if additional smoking prevalence reductions occur, is important for communicating the effect of potential smoking policies.

Methods

In this analysis, we use …

Eco-Friendly Packaging: Changing The Norm, Victoria C. Hoffmann, Mujde Erten-Unal

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

Packaging is an essential aspect of our daily life routines and is integral in preserving, protecting, informing, and selling the products we rely on. The advent of plastic packaging has allowed us to meet the rising consumer demand for efficient and economical packaging solutions. However, plastic packaging has also emerged as a significant contributor to environmental degradation. This review highlights the growing need for eco-friendly packaging alternatives, given the harmful impact of current packaging practices. It delves into several proposed sustainable packaging solutions and their limitations, and outlines strategic initiatives for safer packaging. As a society, it is critical to …

Replacing Traditional Labs With Virtual Labs For First-Year Biology Nonmajors, Tyjuanna R. Strickland Labennett Oct 2024

Replacing Traditional Labs With Virtual Labs For First-Year Biology Nonmajors, Tyjuanna R. Strickland Labennett

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem addressed through this study was the absence of a critical examination of laboratory exercises used with first-year nonbiology majors and the deployment of virtual laboratories in the biology department at the project site university without critical analyses associated with the efficacy of virtual labs. Grounded in Mayer’s cognitive theory of multimedia learning, this quantitative, correlational study was conducted to investigate the comparative effectiveness of virtual versus traditional face-to-face (F2F) laboratories for first-year nonbiology majors as measured by final course grade. A cohort of 184 students in an introductory biology course for non-majors formed the dataset, procured from the …

Executive Summary: Clinical Practice Guideline, Bona Eze Oct 2024

Executive Summary: Clinical Practice Guideline, Bona Eze

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addressed a gap in practice in an outpatient clinic in the Northeastern United States. The gap in practice was a lack of standardized patient education on self-care management strategies for adult patients with diabetes, leading to increased rates of noncompliance, readmission, and poor health outcomes. The guiding question asked whether an expert panel could evaluate and validate a clinical practice (CPG) developed from current, evidence-based literature and recommendations from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American Diabetes Association on self-care management strategies for the adult patient with diabetes. The project followed …

The Role Of Nutrition In Modulating Neurodevelopmental And Mental Health Outcomes In Pediatric Populations: A Review, Athul M. Vikas Oct 2024

The Role Of Nutrition In Modulating Neurodevelopmental And Mental Health Outcomes In Pediatric Populations: A Review, Athul M. Vikas

Senior Theses

Introduction: Neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety, and depression, have risen sharply in prevalence among children and adolescents, creating substantial public health concerns. Traditional interventions, primarily pharmacological and behavioral, offer critical but limited support, underscoring the need for integrated approaches. Recent findings suggest that nutrition may play a significant role in supporting brain development and mitigating mental health risks, offering preventive benefits that complement conventional therapies. This review aims to evaluate the influence of specific nutrients—such as folate, iron, DHA, zinc, and vitamin B12—on neurodevelopmental outcomes, emphasizing the importance of these nutrients during critical growth …

A Historical Analysis Of Infant Mortality In South Carolina From 1920-1970, Allison Ritchie Oct 2024

A Historical Analysis Of Infant Mortality In South Carolina From 1920-1970, Allison Ritchie

Senior Theses

This study uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to investigate racial and spatial inequalities in South Carolina infant mortality rates (IMR’s) between 1920-1970. In the 20th century, IMR’s declined throughout the United States, primarily due to economic growth, increased sanitation, and improved medical knowledge. Factors such as systemic racism and lack of healthcare access resulted in higher IMR’s for Black infants and infants living in rural areas. In 1920, South Carolina’s Black IMR was 1.5 times higher than the white IMR; by 1970 the difference expanded to 1.9, reflecting a 27% rise. The disparity between Black and white IMR’s increased in …

In-Line Milk Progesterone Monitoring As A Tool For Precision Reproductive Management, Tony C. Bruinjé, Divakar J. Ambrose, Stephen J. Lebalnc

Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present

In-line milk progesterone (IMP4) monitoring (Herd Navigator, DeLaval) is a technology that automatically detects onset of cyclicity, estrus, and pregnancy. Sampling starts at 20 DIM and occurs on average every 2 d until pregnancy. Estrus is detected based on a decline in progesterone (P4) concentrations below a threshold, and pregnancy is assessed from 30 to 55 d after AI in cows without return to estrus. Here, we review the potential of IMP4 as a tool for reproductive management. In a series of observational studies with up to 158,961 IMP4 records from 4,353 AI events, we characterized predictors of pregnancy per …

Honors Is More Than A Grade: Removing The Experiential Ceiling In Honors, Justin L. Rheubert, Marisa Prisco, Paige A. Grum, Abby L. Kalkstein

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The stress created by academic pressure may prevent honors students from exploring curricula beyond that required by their majors. Challenged with additional workload and extracurricular requirements, students in honors often confront added stress caused by a desire to perform favorably in all academic pursuits. This pressure may result in hesitancy to explore new ideas, nurture curiosity, or break free from the rigors of a defined program of study—the opposite of what honors pedagogy and practice purport. This essay presents the process of converting a weighted grading system to pass/fail in an effort to provide students with opportunities for academic exploration …

Face-To-Face: A Sociologist Looks At College Students' Mental Health, Maureen Kelleher Oct 2024

Face-To-Face: A Sociologist Looks At College Students' Mental Health, Maureen Kelleher

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

While both individual honors programs and their broader campus communities have implemented new initiatives and intervention strategies to address undergraduate mental health, significant needs remain unmet and concerns unaddressed about the long-term implications for students. This paper provides a framework for understanding the current (2023) environment on many campuses by presenting national legislation that shapes campus response, offering cases of specific institutional responses to crisis, and exploring the impact of face-to-face interaction between faculty and students in classrooms. Awareness of these three levels of response—national, campus, and classroom—equips and empowers the honors community to understand and effectively deal with myriad …

Common Consumer Residual Insecticides Lack Efficacy Against Insecticide-Susceptible And Resistant Populations Of The German Cockroach (Blattodea: Ectobiidae), Johnalyn Gordon, Marla J. Eva, Sudip Gaire, Arthur G. Appel, Zachary C. Devries

UK CARES Faculty Publications

The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Ectobiidae), is a ubiquitous pest in affordable housing. They represent a major threat to human health due to their contribution of asthma-exacerbating allergens and the potential to transfer pathogenic microorganisms indoors. Despite well-documented pyre- throid resistance, pyrethroid-based broadcast residual insecticide products are often used by residents to con- trol cockroaches in their homes. Additionally, there is little empirical independent testing of these products. Thus, it remains unclear how effective these commonly used do-it-yourself products are at controlling German cockroaches. This study represents a comprehensive examination of the efficacy of these products with direct, …
