Care Of Women With Thyroid Disease: Guideline Update, Donna Williams, Kathryn Trotter
Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)
Problem Statement: Endocrinology guidelines for the diagnosis and management of thyroid disease differ in pregnancy and postpartum compared to the preconception state. Aim: NPs need to be aware of the management updates within the 2017 American Thyroid Association Guidelines. Hypothyroidism is second only to diabetes in endocrine disorders in pregnancy. Background: Due to the structural similarities of hCG to TSH and the increase in thyroxine binding globulin during pregnancy, nurse practitioners should understand the relative physiologic changes. These changes result in varied interpretation of free T4 values, forcing clarification in thyroid hormone laboratory assays. Population: Women across the lifespan were …

Obstetrical Healthcare Providers' Knowledge Of The 2009 Iom Guidelines For Weight Gain In Pregnancy; Clinical Integration And Implications, Beth Steinfeld
Group: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)
Purpose: More than 35.8% of the US population is obese; 45% of pregnant women are overweight and thus, are at risk for numerous negative perinatal outcomes. Healthcare providers are faced with the challenges of having adequate educational preparation to help obese clients limit weight gain to comply with the recommended amount of gestational weight. Consistent integration of weight management interventions into their practice with obese clients will help address this clinical dilemma. In response to this problem, in 2009, the IOM reexamined their guidelines for weight gain in pregnancy and issued new and more stringent guidelines for weight gain for …

The Humanistic Foundations Of Imogene King's Theory Of Mutual Goal Attainment And Implications, Beverly J. Whelton
The Humanistic Foundations Of Imogene King's Theory Of Mutual Goal Attainment And Implications, Beverly J. Whelton
Group: King International Nursing Group
This presentation provides the humanistic foundations of Imogen King's theory of Mutual Goal Attainment through the Classical-Modern synthesis of the Contemporary philosopher, Norris Clark. Classical philosophy tells us humans are substantial (matter/form) beings with the capacities of knowing, reasoning and choosing from options we know. Modern philosophy tells us humans possess their own sense of self. They are beings towards others with self-possession and are self-transcendent and self-communicative finding fulfillment in self-giving. These natural capacities need to be nurtured and supported through education and mutual decision making.

Electric Interrow Control Of Lupine Plants Does Not Adversely Affect The Neighboring Non-Target Lupine Plants, Catherine Borger, Miranda J. Slaven
Electric Interrow Control Of Lupine Plants Does Not Adversely Affect The Neighboring Non-Target Lupine Plants, Catherine Borger, Miranda J. Slaven
Journal articles
Interrow weed control is used in a wide range of crops, traditionally applied via physical cultivation or banded herbicide application. However, these methods may result in crop damage, development of herbicide resistance, or off-target environmental impacts. Electric interrow weed control presents an alternative, although its potential impact on crop yield requires further investigation. One of the modes of action of electric weed control is the continuous electrode–plant contact method, which passes a current through the weed and into the roots. As the current passes into the roots, it can potentially disperse through the soil to neighboring root systems. Such off-target …

Experiencing Moral Uncertainty In Practice, Mary Ellen Wurzbach
Experiencing Moral Uncertainty In Practice, Mary Ellen Wurzbach
General Submissions: Nursing as Profession
This study examined the experience of moral uncertainty in practice and its effect on the nurses who experience it. Humility is coming to an understanding of the complexity of ethical understanding. This means acknowledging that moral beliefs may exist that are equally fundamental and yet contradictory within a given situation. It also means recognizing and acknowledging moral uncertainty. Instead of pursuing a search for moral certainty, living with the ambiguities of the ethical life is not only suggested, but recommended. Although even statements of fact may be tentative, one can have sufficient knowledge to take moral action, subject to revision …

Treatment Trials - The Need For An End-Of-Life Policy, Mary Ellen Wurzbach
General Submissions: Nursing as Profession
Currently, there is an epidemic of elders in nursing homes with swallowing difficulties, Alzheimer's, and other maladies, which cause diminished decision-making capacity and initiate the discussion of whether to insert a gastrostomy tube. Furthermore, there is an overriding belief among health care practitioners that once inserted the tube will remain until the death of the resident.
The need for policy provisions related to treatment trials of gastrostomy tubes at the end-of-life is discussed. The arguments supporting and opposing treatment trials as applied to the individual and to the community are articulated and the benefits of such a policy discussed from …

General Submissions: Clinical Settings Materials
One word that is even more daunting than the death itself and eats up a person from the inside is cancer. Head and neck malignancy (HNM) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by complex clinical and pathologic presentations. The treatment of HNM has undergone a gradual evolution over the past 3 decades, with an increased emphasis placed on organ preservation and multimodality management, including the use of radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy. RT approach, however, is associated with increasing rates of muco-toxicity that have been well documented in the context of numerous clinical trials in light of the radiation oncology literature and …
