Objective: To describe current food insecurity (FI)-related training among nutrition/dietetics, public health, and social work students. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was used among students (n = 306) enrolled in health-related programs at 12 US universities. Participants reported FI-related course-based and extracurricular experiences and rated confidence to address FI on a scale of 1–3. Open-ended questions investigated perceived definitions of FI and impactful course activities. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Participants’ FI definitions were multifaceted. Most (80.6%) reported FI being covered in at least 1 course. The overall mean confidence to address FI was …

Studies of human microbiomics, spanning diverse anatomical sites, offer a unique perspective into the complex microbial communities within the body. Influenced by age, gender, and disease, it mirrors broader microbial ecosystems. This study specifically delves into the ocular and gastrointestinal tract microbiome, comparing its composition in 43 healthy and diseased patients using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We identified a rich microbial landscape, identifying over 338 bacterial taxa. Notably, Acinetobacter, Cutibacterium, Acidovorax and Herbaspirillum were prevalent in the ocular samples and Akkermansia, Faecalibacterium, and Anaerostipes were mostly prevalent in gut samples. East Texas Master Gardener Characteristics, Volunteer Choices, And Willingness To Answer Questions From The Public, Damon Gregory Grant

East Texas Master Gardener volunteers were asked to participate in an exploratory Qualtrics survey during the fall of 2023. This study examined the demographic characteristics, volunteer engagement choices, and challenges of Master Gardener volunteers in Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service District 5, focusing on whether current training adequately prepares volunteers for public-facing roles. Findings showed that volunteers were primarily older, retired, well-educated, white females, favoring hands-on activities like garden demonstrations and fundraising over Help Desk question answering roles due to perceived inadequacies in knowledge. Over 80% indicated that mentorship and advanced training could improve their confidence in public interactions. Recommendations …

Coal combustion residues (CCR) pose a serious environmental threat, even long after they are disposed of in specialized landfills, due to their complex composition and potential for leaching into waterways. This study focuses on the issue of elevated sulfate concentrations at the Martin Lake Steam Electric Station (MLSES) A-I Disposal Area in Panola County, Texas, where CCR are disposed of in a permanent landfill. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the dose response of nicotinic acid (NA) on body growth, blood glucose and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentrations, and urinary purine derivatives (PD) excretion in preweaned dairy calves. A total of 40 (22 male and 18 female) Holstein dairy calves averaging initial body weight 42.5 ± 5.60 kg (mean ± SD) were blocked by birth and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 levels of NA: (1) 0 g/d (CON), (2) 2 g/d (2NA), (3) 4 g/d (4NA), and (4) 6 g/d (6NA). Introduction: Recent advancements in cancer care have improved the prognosis of many cancer survivors who are living longer due to early detection and improvements in treatment. These survivors remain at risk for long-term physical treatment side effects. Survivors may also experience depression and anxiety related to fear of recurrence. Genomic prediction (GP) has proven to be an essential tool to accelerate the cultivar development pipeline by predicting the performance of un-phenotyped lines in the field of plant breeding. Background: Higher cruciferous vegetable intake is associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk in observational studies. The pathways involved remain uncertain. We aimed to determine whether cruciferous vegetable intake (active) lowers 24-h brachial systolic blood pressure (SBP; primary outcome) compared to root and squash vegetables (control) in Australian adults with mildly elevated BP (SBP 120–160 mmHg inclusive). Methods: In this randomized, controlled, crossover trial, participants completed two 2-week dietary interventions separated by a 2-week washout. Background:melanotic neuroectodermal of infancy (MNTI) is a very rare benign pigmented neoplasm originating from the neural crest associated with increased excretion of vanillylmandelic acid. Fewer than 500 cases have been reported to date. Usually painless, often based on an epithelial surface, blue to black in color with extensive and aggressive growth. MNTI vascularization is rarely reported, requiring MRI radiographic examination, angiography, embolization and biopsy to support diagnosis and surgical management as well as minimizing complications.

OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to determine continuation rates of stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) upon transfer from a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) to a general medicine unit and upon hospital discharge. The secondary aim was to identify patient characteristics or concomitant medications that were associated with continuation of SUP at transfer from the PICU.

This Anaphylaxis Manifesto calls on communities to prioritise 10 practical actions to improve the lives of people at risk of serious allergic reactions. The Global Allergy and Asthma European Network and the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients' Associations (EFA) compiled patient-centric priorities. We used qualitative consensus methods, research evidence and feedback from over 200 patient groups, stakeholder organisations and healthcare professionals. We encourage healthcare, education and food organisations to collaborate with people at risk of serious allergic reactions to tackle safety, anxiety and financial burdens for individuals and societies. BACKGROUND: To improve the healthfulness of foods offered while accelerating the use of environmental sustainability practices, it is important to engage hospital food service operators in the adoption of such practices. The purpose of this study was to explore barriers, facilitators and best practices for implementing environmental sustainability standards in food service among veterans affairs (VA) hospitals in the United States.

The relationship between BRAF-V600E mutations, mitochondrial DNA amplification and microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) in colorectal cancer (CRC) has yet to be fully elucidated. The aim of the present study was to assess the association between the MSI status and BRAF-V600E gene mutations/clinicopathological features/mitochondrial DNA amplification in CRC. A non-interventional study analysis was performed using the clinicopathological features of 455 patients with CRC. Growth differentiation factor (GDF15) has been considered a biomarker and recently a hormonal driver for diseases in different populations. However, the role of GDF15 as a biomarker of health outcomes in obese men from different racial/ethnic background has not been evaluated. The objective of this study was to investigate the racial/ethnic differences on the relationship between GDF15 and markers of glucometabolic status, hormonal profile, body composition and bone mineral density (BMD) in obese men. Aims: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is one of the most strongly associated risk factors for stroke. Our study aims to analyze changes in mortality from 1999 to 2020 in patients with AF and stroke.

Methods: Using the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC-WONDER), we retrospectively analyzed annual age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) per million from 1999 to 2020 in stroke patients with AF. Temporal trends were analyzed, and Annual Percentage Change (APC) was calculated using the JoinPoint regression model across variations in demographics (sex, race) and regional subgroups.

Background: Pediatric high blood pressure (BP) predicts future cardiovascular disease events. High BP is improperly measured, underrecognized, and undermanaged especially in disadvantaged populations. In a large, diverse, academic pediatric practice, we detail the associations of a comprehensive initiative with high BP provider recognition.

Methods: A comprehensive BP initiative was promulgated including (1) retraining providers and staff on BP management; (2) deploying equipment at 55+ sites; and (3) electronic decision support tool alerting staff and clinicians and suggesting management. Purpose of review: Gut microbiota contribute to several physiological processes in the host. The composition of the gut microbiome is associated with different neurological and neurodevelopmental diseases. In psychiatric disease, stress may be a major factor leading to gut microbiota alterations. Depressive disorders are the most prevalent mental health issues worldwide and patients often report gastrointestinal symptoms. Accordingly, evidence of gut microbial alterations in depressive disorders has been growing. Here we review current literature revealing links between the gut microbiome and brain function in the context of depression.

Youth-onset type 2 diabetes is a heterogeneous disease with increasing prevalence in relation to increased rates of obesity in children. It has genetic, epigenetic, social, and environmental determinants. Youth-onset type 2 diabetes is alarming given a rapidly progressive course compared with the course of adult-onset disease, early-onset vascular complications, and long-term exposure to hyperglycemia and associated complications. It is often preceded by prediabetes, a disease phase where defects in β-cell function relative to insulin sensitivity emerge. Background & aims: Cirrhosis is a leading cause of liver-related mortality and a multifactorial disease. To date, the complex genetic architecture of non-viral cirrhosis has not been fully explored. Cross-trait genetic correlations can elucidate the common genetic etiology of genetically correlated phenotypes. This study aims to identify polygenic and pleiotropic traits associated with cirrhosis using the linkage disequilibrium score regression analysis.

Methods: We conducted genome-wide association analysis of 9,622,842 imputed SNPs on 3,368 non-viral cirrhosis cases and 258,258 controls, and cross-trait analysis between non-viral cirrhosis and various polygenic and pleiotropic traits using the UK Biobank cohort study. We further performed …

Objective: To determine the association between indoor air pollution and respiratory morbidities in children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) recruited from the multicenter BPD Collaborative.

Study design: A cross-sectional study was performed among participants < 3 years old in the BPD Collaborative Outpatient Registry. Indoor air pollution was defined as any reported exposure to tobacco or marijuana smoke, electronic cigarette emissions, gas stoves, and/or wood stoves. Clinical data included acute care use and chronic respiratory symptoms in the past 4 weeks.

Results: A total of 1011 participants born at a mean gestational age of 26.4 ± 2.2 weeks were included. Most (66.6%) had severe BPD. More than 40% of participants were exposed to ≥1 source of indoor air pollution. Aim: To examine the associations of a diet high in flavonoid-rich foods, as reflected by a “Flavodiet Score” (FDS), the major individual food contributors to flavonoid intake, and flavonoid subclasses with type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk in the UK Biobank cohort. Materials and methods: Flavonoid intakes were estimated from ≥2 dietary assessments among 113,097 study participants [age at enrolment: 56 ± 8 years; 57% female] using the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) databases.
