BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The prognostic value of nutritional scoring tools in assessing the relationship between nutritional status and prognosis in hemodialysis patients is unclear. This multicenter retrospective cohort study compared the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Controlling Nutritional Status scores (CONUT), and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) for predictive accuracy of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, especially the impact of dynamic changes over time on prognosis.

METHODS: Hemodialysis patients from four hospitals were included. Laboratory data and nutrition scores were collected at the initiation of dialysis, and at 6th, 12th, and 18th months after dialysis initiation. A joint model analyzed the relationship …

Background: Heart failure is a complex clinical syndrome that requires the involvement of interdisciplinary teams to address patient needs and optimize therapy. Interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, advanced practice practitioners, and pharmacists, play a crucial role in implementing guideline-directed medical therapy and addressing barriers to self-care that ultimately improve patients’ overall survival. Background: Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers determined that levels of severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) genetic material in wastewater could provide information about COVID-19 occurrence in communities. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) efforts have subsequently expanded throughout the U.S. and internationally; the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiated its National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) in September of 2020 and continues its SARS-CoV-2 wastewater monitoring efforts following the end of the federal COVID-19 public health emergency in May 2023. Colorectal Surgery continues to be one of the most common gastrointestinal surgeries performed in the US. A common complication known as Anastomotic Leakage (AL) that threatens up to 30% of patients with this surgery. Background: Firefighters face many inherent occupational health hazards and increased risk for several cancers, making peak health essential. However, cardiac events and stroke continue as leading causes of on-duty deaths. Healthy diets promote prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancers. While some dietary interventions have been undertaken, sustained improvements have not been observed. Understanding firefighters’ occupational influences on dietary behavior is vital for implementation of effective interventions to improve nutrition. Turkesterone is a naturally occurring plant steroid touted for its medicinal, pharmacological, and biological properties with no reported adverse side effects compared with traditional anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS). However, this ostensible enhancement to increase muscle protein synthesis and facilitate augmented thermogenesis remains undescribed despite uninformed and potentially haphazard consumption. To investigate whether turkesterone enhances insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and resting metabolic rate (RMR), eleven apparently healthy males (23.3 ± 2.2) volunteered to participate in the present study with samples collected pre-, 3H post-, and 24H post-ingestion. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a Beginning Commercial Butterfly Breeder Seminar, a training workshop based on evidence-based best practices for rearing butterflies. The evaluation examined participant experience in the workshop, knowledge gained, and any changes in their professional practice. An electronic survey was distributed to participants of the 2022 and 2023 cohorts to collect feedback on their perception of the seminar and mastery of learning outcomes. Mosquitoes are detrimental to animals and threaten humans. More information is needed on how farm animal presence may impact mosquito abundance and diversity at farms. My goal in this study is to determine if there is any correlation between animal abundance or diversity on a farm and the abundance and diversity of mosquitoes collected. Hidalgo County, Texas, has a subtropical desert climate, ideal for mosquitoes. While existing literature addresses the experiences of beginning farmers and ranchers (BFR), there is a notable gap in research focused on Hispanic beginning farmers and ranchers (HBFR). This study aimed at exploring the unique experiences of HBFR in a predominantly Hispanic region, the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), employed the Community Capitals Framework (Flora et al., 2016). I conducted 16 semi-structured interviews with HBFR and local nonprofit organizations and federal employees, complemented by participant observations. Through thematic and content analysis of the interview transcripts, findings revealed valuable insights into the livelihoods of HBFR. Competition in weightlifting consists of 3 attempts the snatch and clean and jerk declared by the athlete and their coach prior to the starting of the lift. While waiting for the athlete’s lift, waiting periods can change and warm up attempts may need to be adjusted. Often, coaches prescribe either a complete “light power” or partial “heavy pull” repetition of the competed movement during a long wait. This dissertation explored how schools promote and engage families in physical activity (PA) opportunities through two studies conducted in a Mountain West state. Study one explored strategies schools used to engage families in PA. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of ten secondary-level educators and their perceptions of work-related stress and wellness programs as a coping mechanism. Participants were middle and high school teachers in one school district in the Pacific Northwest that has a wellness program. Through semi-structured interviews, it employs a transcendental phenomenological analysis to merge participants’ experiences with Lazarus and Folkman’s (1987) Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. The research underscores the need for systemic changes to address teacher stress and well-being before wellness programs can serve as an effective coping mechanism. This study aims to enhance sustainable disease management in black gram by identifying varieties resistant to Mungbean Yellow Mosaic India Virus (MYMIV). We screened sixteen black gram genotypes, assessing physiological, biochemical and enzymatic basis. Results revealed a range of resistance levels, with PANT URD-19 showing the highest resistance (PDI 0.47%) and Pejua the lowest (PDI 37.24%). Seven genotypes demonstrated strong resistance, highlighting the necessity for targeted breeding. Variations in leaf thickness, trichome density, stomatal frequency, and epicuticular wax content were significant, with resistant varieties like LBG-888 and PANT URD-19 exhibiting thicker leaves, higher trichome density, and more wax, correlating with …

BACKGROUND: Recent data showed an association between malnutrition and increased all-cause mortality and thromboembolic risk in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the impact of malnutrition on the clinical outcomes for patients undergoing catheter ablation for AF is still debated. ABSTRACT Objectives: To determine the seroprevalence of Varicella Zoster virus (VZV) immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM antibodies among hemodialysis patients (HDP). Additionally, the presence of VZV viral DNA has been investigated for possible reactivation status. Methods: Sera from 265 individuals were collected and tested. The study was carried out from November 2023 to February 2024. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was accomplished to determine the VZV IgG and IgM antibody levels. The viral DNA was tested by qPCR.
