Menstrual Cycle Phase Effects On Exercise Thermoregulation And Performance In The Heat, Kailei J. Eustis

All Master's Theses

Hormone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle (MC) may influence physiological responses. This study examined whether thermoregulatory measures differ across MC phases, and if these changes impact running performance in the heat. Ten eumenorrheic adults completed two treadmill runs in simulated conditions (wet bulb globe temperature 31.7 ± 1.4°C) during early follicular (EF) and midluteal (ML) phases. First 45min was a constant self-selected light pace followed by a 15min performance test for distance. Core temperature (Tc), mean skin temperature (Ts), heart rate (HR), perceived exertion (RPE), thermal perception (THERM), and comfort perception (COMF) were assessed every 5min. Sweat perception (SP), sweat …

The Genetic Role Of The Dopamine Receptor D4 Gene, Zayden Hill Jan 2025

The Genetic Role Of The Dopamine Receptor D4 Gene, Zayden Hill

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects over 22 million Americans today. Typically, ADHD is first presented during childhood, the exact cause of ADHD is unknown. Genetic mutations, such as those in the DRD4 gene on chromosome 11, have been linked to ADHD. This gene encodes for dopamine receptor D4, which inhibits adenylyl cyclase, an enzyme involved in cell signaling. A missense mutation in DRD4 could hinder the receptor function, contributing to inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity--core symptoms of ADHD. Epigenetics also plays a role in ADHD development and symptomology. Maternal omega-3 supplementation has been linked to …

Investigating The Role Of Keratin 6 And Sox2 In Regulating Growth, Stemness, Basal/Squamous Expression, And Chemotherapy Response In Muscle-Invasive Urothelial Carcinoma, Nelofar Nargis

Theses and Dissertations

Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is a prevalent and aggressive malignancy arising in urothelial cells, with arsenic exposure recognized as a significant environmental risk factor. It is categorized into two primary subtypes based on the extent of cancer progression beyond the bladder’s muscle wall: non-muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma (NMIUC) and muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma (MIUC). While NMIUC is associated with a relatively favorable prognosis, progression to MIUC is more aggressive and leads to significantly worse outcomes, including poor treatment response and increased metastasis. Squamous differentiation (SD) in UC is an emerging hallmark of aggressive UC, with patients often having poor prognoses and developing chemoresistance, …

Food Sovereignty Among Migrant Farmworkers: The Role Of Agrobiodiversity For Autonomy And Resistance In A Mexican Coffee Plantation, Estelí Jiménez-Soto, Sanya Cowal, April Lopez

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Coffee agroecosystems represent the economic base for thousands of small growers and agricultural workers, as well as a significant proportion of many regional economies in Latin America. Every year, the production of coffee in this region attracts a great number of laborers and their families, particularly during the harvest season. Despite being essential workers in the food system, agricultural workers continue to be one of the most marginalized actors in the coffee production chain. Even with an environment of precarity, agricultural workers exercise their autonomy and food sovereignty—the process by which agricultural workers, in this case, define their food system …

Exploring Associations Between Personality Type & Fruit And Vegetable Consumption, Allison Woldt, Tanya Mora, Liang Ji, Julie Jones, Jeje Noval

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Fruit and vegetable intake is vital for preserving health and avoiding chronic illnesses, yet only approximately 1 in 10 adults in the U. S. adhere to daily consumption guidelines, based on CDC data. While earlier research has examined external factors such as socioeconomic status, cultural influences, and religion as significant determinants of dietary habits, new studies highlight a crucial internal element: personality. Our research delves into this emerging area by examining the connection between personality types, derived from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption. In contrast to the extensively studied Big Five personality framework, the …

Mental health disorders, particularly anxiety and depression, are a growing global concern with profound consequences on individuals' well-being and societal functioning. The burden of these disorders is not only psychological but also economic, affecting quality of life. Mental health outcomes are heavily influenced by a range of social determinants, such as financial status, education, and access to healthcare. While extensive research has focused on WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) countries, there remains a significant gap in understanding how these determinants affect mental health in low-resource settings or non-WEIRD countries. This study aimed to address this gap by exploring the …

Fine Root And Ectomycorrhizal Functional Traits Of Quercus Rubra Populations From Across A Latitudinal Gradient, Emma L. Shedd Jan 2025

Fine Root And Ectomycorrhizal Functional Traits Of Quercus Rubra Populations From Across A Latitudinal Gradient, Emma L. Shedd

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Forests are increasingly considered for their carbon sequestration value, but their ability to store carbon is dependent on a close balance between carbon fluxes into and out of ecosystems. Nutrient uptake of roots and associated symbiotic communities results in respiratory carbon release, which is projected to increase with warming and represents a substantial uncertainty in earth system modeling. Traits that are functionally related to nutrient uptake can be used to estimate carbon fluxes, but our understanding of the trade-offs that govern root, and especially fungal, traits is limited. Fine roots in surface soils are responsible for the bulk of plant …
