Background: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) resulting from sedentary behavior (SB) are adding a further strain on the South African health system, which is already struggling to manage infectious diseases. Some countries have enabled children to reduce SB at school by substituting traditional furniture with sit-stand classroom furniture, allowing learners to interrupt prolonged bouts of sitting with standing without interrupting their school work. Alternating between sitting and standing also benefits spinal health by interrupting prolonged periods of high spinal loading, but no such intervention has been trialed in South Africa. The potential to reduce strain on the health system by reducing the …

Meeting Micronutrient Needs Of Children Aged Six Months To Five Years, Stephanie Enjaian
Master of Nutrition and Dietetics
Ensuring nutritional adequacy and developing positive dietary behaviors during early childhood is critical for establishing lifelong healthy habits (Hasnin, Dev, & Tovar, 2020). Children aged six months to five years rely exclusively on their caregivers for their dietary needs and food environment. Micronutrient needs for children aged six months to five years greatly vary as children grow rapidly during this stage of life. Children begin learning self-feeding by the age of one and establish meal patterns (Mahmood, Flores-Barrantes, Moreno, Manios, & Gonzalez-Gil, 2021).
Primary sources of energy and micronutrients dramatically shift from milk at one to two years to solid …

Given the lack of established practice guidelines for the management of cutaneous symptoms associated with toxic epidermal necrolysis, treatments range from various dressings to skin substitutes. The following report details a case of a 21-year-old male patient with this diagnosis who presented nine days after rash eruption from an outside hospital with no signs of healing. The patient was then successfully managed surgically eleven days after symptom onset with debridement of epidermal blisters and placement of Suprathel®. To our knowledge, this publication is the first to describe the potential of this synthetic skin substitute in promoting epidermal regeneration for delayed …

A Randomized Controlled Study Of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback In An Older Adult Sample, Whitney D. Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) is a controlled breathing treatment designed to increase the variation in consecutive heartbeats leading to improved regulation of one's autonomic nervous system thereby improving one's ability to self-regulate and maintain homeostasis. Changes in heart rate variability (HRV) are seen in those of increased age and lower HRV is associated with poorer outcomes (e.g., increased mortality, worse emotional functioning, cardiovascular risk factors). As such, older adults are a group that stands to benefit from HRVB principles. The current randomized control trial was designed to understand the impact of HRVB in an older adult population on resting …
