The Heart Of Healing, Madison Prieto
Frankenstein Colorized, Marianne Koleng
Frankenstein Colorized, Marianne Koleng
be Still
One of my favorite novel's growing up was Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I see Frankenstein's desire to create a "Monster" as a way to grasp at the fundamental human drive for connection, and healing through connection. In this piece, I attempt to bring that inner yearning for fundamental connection to paper.
Beyond Myself - Healing Through Pain, Marianne Koleng
Beyond Myself - Healing Through Pain, Marianne Koleng
be Still
In this piece I reflect on the importance of setbacks, non-linear growth, injuries, and pain and their ability to provide self-reflection, a platform for growth, and an crucial reminder of the fragility of life. I have often been self-critical for not following a "traditional" path in life, and reflecting on my experiences allows me to show myself grace and hopefully may influence others to do so as well.
Death Is Not The End, Marianne Koleng
Death Is Not The End, Marianne Koleng
be Still
In this piece, Death is Not the End, the juxtaposition of maintaining a connection with those lost, while simultaneously adjusting to life without them is explored. The use of mixed media to convey a spectrum of emotions surrounding death along with the use of both a skeleton, to represent death, and "normal" hands and body contours to represent life, highlight the importance that proper healing play in both mourning and celebrating life.

Experiences And Attitudes Of Caregivers During Mealtimes In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder At A Tertiary Facility In Kenya., Lynnette Muthoni Mwangi
Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health
Introduction: - ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interactions and communication along with restrictive and repetitive behaviours affecting 1 in 100 children globally, with a higher prevalence in males. Despite the rising global statistics, there is limited information regarding the prevalence of ASD in Sub-Saharan Africa. Children with ASD often experience feeding challenges, which have been broadly categorized as food selectivity, food refusal, and disruptive mealtime behaviour, which poses challenges for caregivers during mealtime. While medical management of ASD receives considerable attention, less focus has been placed on the impact of ASD on caregivers and …
Transdisciplinary Collaborations For Advancing Sustainable And Resilient Agricultural Systems, Brooke Mayer
Transdisciplinary Collaborations For Advancing Sustainable And Resilient Agricultural Systems, Brooke Mayer
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Feeding the growing human population sustainably amidst climate change is one of the most important challenges in the 21st century. Current practices often lead to the overuse of agronomic inputs, such as synthetic fertilizers and water, resulting in environmental contamination and diminishing returns on crop productivity. The complexity of agricultural systems, involving plant-environment interactions and human management, presents significant scientific and technical challenges for developing sustainable practices. Addressing these challenges necessitates transdisciplinary research, involving intense collaboration among fields such as plant science, engineering, computer science, and social sciences. Five case studies are presented here demonstrating successful transdisciplinary approaches toward more …

Leveraging Background Knowledge For Science Success: A Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol And Next Generation Science Standards Framework, Emily Meyer
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Science teachers can find it challenging to find a framework to bridge the gap between students' background knowledge and lesson objectives. I aimed to answer this question: how can science teachers use the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model framework to help students bridge the gap between background knowledge and scientific academic language and content. The literature highlights the importance of accessing this background knowledge, illustrating its potential to bridge students to advanced language and science content objectives. This paper and four-session professional development focus on: assessing and building background knowledge in students, Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary to …

Addressing Agricultural Mulch Challenges In Specialty Crop Production, Caleb David Wehrbein
Addressing Agricultural Mulch Challenges In Specialty Crop Production, Caleb David Wehrbein
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Agricultural mulches are an essential yield-boosting tool in modern specialty crop production that provide weed suppression, temperature modulation, and moisture conservation functions. Polyethylene plastic mulches are the most widely used agricultural mulch but are not sustainable given their pollutive effect on the environment and challenges associated with recycling. In order to move towards a more sustainable industry, plastic mulch use in agriculture should become more efficient or replaced with more environmentally friendly alternatives. Biodegradable mulches may be a suitable alternative to plastic mulch, but they are often less durable and prematurely degrade in field conditions. Considering this, my dissertation research …

The adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) test diagnoses relative adrenal insufficiency (RAI) or critical illness–related corticosteroid insufficiency (CIRCI). Initially, guidelines recommended corticosteroid/glucocorticoid (GC) therapy for septic patients with RAI, but later trials did not show a survival benefit, leading to updated guidelines that abandon targeting RAI or CIRCI. Recent studies with an RAI mouse model showed a clear survival benefit from GC therapy in mice with RAI, suggesting that inconclusive GC clinical trials might be due to issues with the ACTH test rather than targeting RAI. To investigate, we performed the ACTH test in septic mice. Interestingly, the ACTH test identified most …
Production Of Biofertilizer And Biohydrogen Via Anaerobic Fermentation Of Ulva Spp.: A Feasibility Study For Reducing Coastal Eutrophication And Generating Clean Energy, Katie Graves
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This feasibility study investigates the potential of anaerobic fermentation of Ulva spp., a locally sourced macroalga, using Clostridium acetobutylicum to produce biofertilizer and biohydrogen. It further examines the viability of Ulva as fermentation biomass by identifying seasonal trends in nutrient concentrations of biofertilizer and gas production while determining the impact of the preservation method on gas yield. The biofertilizer used for nutrient analysis was produced from fresh Ulva harvested within 24 hours prior to fermentation. Orthophosphate (PO4-P), nitrite (NO2-N), nitrate (NO3-N), and ammonia (NH3-N) concentrations were analyzed post-fermentation using spectrophotometric flow injection analysis (FIA). Potassium (K+) concentrations were measured using …

Diet selection informs the health, fitness, and behavior of wild predators. Due to assumptions that vertebrate prey contains similar compositions of macronutrients (i.e., protein, carbohydrates, and lipids), whole prey items traditionally define carnivore diets. However, increasing evidence suggests that prey differ in terms of their macronutrient compositions, particularly relative to body size. Furthermore, omnivorous predators, like coyotes (Canis latrans), integrate both prey and nonprey diet items whose macronutrient compositions vary. This is particularly important in urbanized systems, which introduce or alter the distributions of prey (e.g., domestic pets) and nonprey (e.g., ornamental plants) foods in ways that contribute …

Spatial management is a widely used technique to protect sessile species or habitats. Protection of essential fish habitat is increasinglybeing recognized globally within fisheries management policies, requiring further practical assessments within temperate fisheries. Weprovide a case study for the efficacy of spatially protecting nursery sites for a highly mobile species—the European bass (Dicentrarchuslabrax). Using acoustic telemetry, 146 individual fish were tracked for up to 812 days across three independent protected bass nurseryareas in the Southwest UK. Within site boundaries commercial fisheries are seasonally restricted to protect vulnerable life stages.Tagged fish were re-detected >5 million times. Detections at receivers highlighted activity …

Law In Bloom: The Roots Of Legal Consciousness And Negotiation In Philadelphia Community Gardens, Vanessa Amsinger , '25
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This thesis examines how legal consciousness, self-governance, and social networks shape power, participation, and belonging in the Southwark Queen Village Community Garden in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I draw on theories of legal pluralism and network theory to analyze archival documents, participant observation, and semi-structured interviews with garden members and leadership. I show that gardeners navigate overlapping formal rules and informal hierarchies, appearing in the form of bylaws, land trust agreements, social ties, and embodied practices, that together produce a complex web of legal consciousness inside the space. Mechanisms of self-governance, like plot assignments and leadership elections, often reinforce social hierarchies …

The Experiences Of Disabled People In Physical Education, Wesley J. Wilson (Editor), Justin A. Haegele (Editor)
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Books
Bringing together a set of first- person accounts of physical education from the perspectives of disabled children and adults, this book puts disabled people’s voices in the foreground.
The book provides a rich set of case study material that deepens our understanding of the experiences of disabled people and challenges students, researchers, and practitioners to reflect critically upon their own positionality. The first part of the book discusses the ways in which disability has been conceptualized, how the voices of disabled people have sometimes been marginalized, and how nondisability power has historically framed the narratives of disabled people in physical …

Forests And Cycles Of Agrarian Sustenance: Time-To-Event Analysis Of Ecosystem Provisioning Services And Seasonal Food Insecurity, Kamaldeen Mohammed, Daniel Kpienbaareh
Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment
In Savanna ecosystems, cycles of sustenance include periods of food abundance and deficits. In rain-fed agricultural systems, forests are a vital food source that helps households close this cycle. This paper uses cross-sectional data to explore the association between provisioning ecosystem services and timing to food insecurity in forest fringe communities (N = 500). The time to food insecurity analysis revealed a significant difference in the onset of food insecurity among households with varying levels of access to forest provisioning services. Households with access to more than four forest products experienced a slower timing to seasonal insecurity. In contrast, …

The Short-Term Effects Of Fluctuating Sleep Timing On Cardiovascular And Metabolic Health, Gabe Dennett
Inquiry Journal Spring 2025
This study investigates the short-term effects of an acute circadian fluctuation protocol on the cardiovascular and metabolic health of young recreationally active college students. While the deleterious effects of sleep deprivation on a person’s health are wide reaching and well established, circadian misalignment—the discrepancy between biological clocks and external cues—remain under investigated. This research highlights “social jet lag,” a common phenomenon among young people wherein inconsistent sleep and wake times driven by social, school, work, or other commitments creates irregularity in hormonal rhythms, autonomic, and metabolic processes; emphasizing the emerging recognition that not just how much we sleep, but when …

3D printing is growing beyond plastics into fields like food and construction, bringing rapid additive manufacturing to various industries and consumers. However, high costs and the need for specialized knowledge limit access for many. My project aimed to modify a low-cost 3D printer to print with paste-like materials using commonly available parts and simple processes. I tested the modification with clay, mashed potatoes, and cream cheese, and found that it successfully worked with all three. This modification has three key benefits: it allows users to print with unconventional materials, helps researchers create low-cost proof of concepts, and contributes to the …

On the internet, where the number of available choices for information is exponentially growing, there is a need to prioritize and deliver relevant results to users efficiently, on demand. Recommendation systems (RSs) address that need by searching through and filtering large amounts of dynamically generated information and providing users with recommendations tailored to them. These systems have primarily focused on (1) single-user models, where recommendations are tailored towards a specific individual, or (2) single-item models, where items are recommended based on a broader appeal to users and similarities in item metadata, in the past. In many real-world scenarios, however, recommendation …

The Association Between Parent’S Mobile Device Use And Physical Activity, Sydney Hill
Theses and Dissertations
Background. The rapid increase in mobile technology has allowed smartphones to be used almost anywhere, but a potential disadvantage of these mobile devices is the displacement of physical activity. Parents of young children are already struggling to reach higher intensities of physical activity and mobile devices might make this worse. However, most existing research on similar topics look at adults without children or uses subjective measures only. Therefore, this study aims to (1) quantify objective mobile device use from a sample of parents with preschool age children; (2) describe the duration and intensity of parents’ physical activity and inactive behavior; …
