School of Public Health Faculty Publications

Heavy metals in beverages can pose health risks in an exposure-dependent manner, however, few studies in the United States have evaluated their metal content and health risks. This study determined the concentrations of eight metal(loid)s, As, Al, Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn, in 60 beverages via inductively coupled plasma[sbnd]mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The highest median concentrations (µg/kg) were found in mixed fruit juices for Ni (45.7), Cr (14.8), and As (4.5); tea for Mn (5,300), Al (730), and Pb (1.4); and plant-based milk for Zn (835) and Cd (1.1). Chronic daily intake (CDI) across age groups was calculated using …

Analysis Of Nitrogen Accumulation And Gene Expression In Hydroponically-Grown Chenopodium Genotypes, Teal Kalt Apr 2025

Analysis Of Nitrogen Accumulation And Gene Expression In Hydroponically-Grown Chenopodium Genotypes, Teal Kalt

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen (N) is an essential macronutrient required by all plants to complete their life cycles. Inefficient N uptake contributes to over fertilization and subsequent environmental and sustainability issues resulting in the need for improved nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Chenopodium quinoa is a resilient pseudocereal crop that is relatively adapted to N-deficient soils. Previous studies have uncovered the unique genetic structure of quinoa and its physiological responses to N availability; however, gaps remain in understanding its molecular mechanisms for NUE. This study investigates four quinoa genotypes (Real-1, 0654, KU-2, and QQ74) hydroponically grown in N-deficient conditions. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis identified …

K-12 Administrators' And Teachers' Perceptions Of Legal Requirements For Providing Inclusive Education, Rebecca Kay Berger

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

At a large school system in the northwestern United States, students who received specially designed instruction services at the middle school study site were not always included with nondisabled peers in general education classes to the extent possible. The theoretical framework guiding this study was Vygotsky’s social constructivist paradigm, which says shared experiences shape people. Using a mixed methods, nonexperimental research design, data were collected using a concurrent, embedded strategy using a pre- and posttreatment online survey with 17 teacher-participants for the pretreatment survey and 11 participants for the posttreatment survey. The treatment in this study was a district-approved professional …

Effects Of Chronic Metal Exposure And Metamorphosis On The Microbiomes Of Larval And Adult Insects And Riparian Spiders Through The Aquatic-Riparian Food Web, Brittany G. Perrotta, Karen A. Kidd, Amy Marcarelli, Gordon Paterson, David M. Walters Apr 2025

Walters

Michigan Tech Publications

The macroinvertebrate microbiome controls various aspects of the host's physiology, from regulation of environmental contaminants to reproductive output. Aquatic insects provide critical nutritional subsidies linking aquatic and riparian food webs while simultaneously serving as a contaminant pathway for riparian insectivores in polluted ecosystems. Previous studies have characterized the transport and transfer of contaminants from aquatic to riparian ecosystems through insect metamorphosis, but both contaminant exposure and metamorphosis are energetically intensive processes that may cause host microbiomes to undergo radical transformation in structure and function, potentially affecting the host's physiology. We collected arthropods from three sites within Torch Lake, a historical …

Consumer empowerment focuses on the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and advocacy that enable consumers to recognize and defend their rights and responsibilities. This study aims to explore the relationship between consumer awareness, skills, and assertiveness, highlighting the role of consumer empowerment in defending their rights. The study involves 2,600 respondents, consisting of 1,400 individuals from urban areas and 1,200 individuals from rural areas, analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The findings reveal that consumer awareness significantly enhances both skills and assertiveness. Additionally, consumer skills serve as a mediator linking awareness and assertiveness. This research emphasizes that higher awareness among consumers can …

Outcomes Evidence Must Keep Up With The Implementation Of The 4ms Framework To Ensure Age-Friendly Health System Transformation, James D Harrison, Stephanie E Rogers, Benjamin Rosner, Estelle Martin, Sunny C Lin, Jarmin Yeh, Julia Adler-Milstein Apr 2025

Outcomes Evidence Must Keep Up With The Implementation Of The 4ms Framework To Ensure Age-Friendly Health System Transformation, James D Harrison, Stephanie E Rogers, Benjamin Rosner, Estelle Martin, Sunny C Lin, Jarmin Yeh, Julia Adler-Milstein

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The Age-Friendly Health System (AFHS) movement was conceptualized as a transformative solution to reliably deliver evidence-based care to older adults. Guided by the 4Ms framework: What Matters, Mobility, Mentation, and Medication, AFHS healthcare systems have been given the flexibility to tailor 4Ms interventions and care processes to their context, preferences and populations. This flexibility has facilitated the widespread adoption of 4Ms care. However, as our understanding of 4Ms implementation grows, evidence of the impact of 4Ms care on outcomes must keep up with implementation to ensure AFHS transformation. It is only through assessing the 4Ms as a whole and understanding …

Supporting Health Equity In Obesity Prevention For Women Of Reproductive Age, Amanda Gilbert Apr 2025

Supporting Health Equity In Obesity Prevention For Women Of Reproductive Age, Amanda Gilbert

Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Women of reproductive age (18-44 years) are at an increased risk of developing obesity due to pregnancy, stressors during this stage in the life course (e.g., leaving home, new jobs, parenthood), and historical and ongoing discrimination and marginalization. Preventing obesity for this population needs to be a public health priority. Obesity negatively affects women’s health (e.g., chronic disease, cancer); leads to poor pregnancy outcomes (e.g., gestational diabetes); and increases the risk children will develop obesity through intergenerational transmission of obesity, further entrenching health disparities for future generations. Health equity principles of social justice and human rights help obesity prevention researchers …

The Coffee Connection: Anti-Diabetic Potential Of Coffee-Derived Compounds And Their Underlying Cellular And Microbial Mechanisms, Emily Bayliss Apr 2025

The Coffee Connection: Anti-Diabetic Potential Of Coffee-Derived Compounds And Their Underlying Cellular And Microbial Mechanisms, Emily Bayliss

Liberty University Research Week

Type II Diabetes (T2D) is characterized by chronically elevated fasting blood glucose resulting from insulin resistance. Epidemiologically, there is an inverse relationship between habitual coffee consumption and risk of T2D (1-3). While this relationship warrants further study, compounds naturally occurring in coffee may possess anti-diabetic potential. Matairesinol (MA), a coffee-derived polyphenol, has been shown to be effective in mitigating weight gain and fat mass accrual which are associated with T2D (4). Enterolactone (ENL), the metabolite of MA, has demonstrated the ability to act on L6 myotubes increasing basal glucose uptake while hindering triacylglycerol uptake in HEPA1-6 cells as well as …
