Ceramic Membrane Evaluation Via Automated Filtration Systems For Water Treatment And Resource Recovery, Weiming Qi
Ceramic Membrane Evaluation Via Automated Filtration Systems For Water Treatment And Resource Recovery, Weiming Qi
All Dissertations
Membranes are an advanced and mature water and wastewater treatment technology. Membrane fouling is a key difficulty for all membrane filtration processes, leading to significant attention in the literature over the years. A common problem in laboratory-scale membrane research is that the testing methods in the laboratory are often quite different than industrial applications due to the limitations of manual experimental setups. An automated membrane filtration apparatus was built in the lab to solve this problem by allowing long-term filtration, frequent backwash and CIP, and high-accuracy operation. The filtration system achieves different cleaning strategies for both theoretical research and practical …

Identification And Characterization Of Intermediate Phenotypes To Decipher Genetic Architecture Of Stalk Lodging Resistance In Maize (Zea Mays L.), Bharath Kunduru
All Dissertations
Maize is a key contributor to global food security and incurs severe yield losses due to stalk lodging, the permanent displacement of plants from an upright growth habit due to mechanical damage to the stem (stalk). Stalk lodging resistance, an indicator of the stalk ability to resist lodging, is a complex trait and determined by several structural, geometric, and material properties of stalks, collectively referred to as intermediate phenotypes, whose identity and genetic framework are poorly understood. Therefore, progress in resolving the genetic architecture of stalk lodging resistance was impeded by a lack of standardized phenotyping methodologies and a poor …

The Next Stride: Improving Athletic Performance Within The Indoor Track In Temperate Climates, Koate Wisdom Deebom
Architecture Theses
This thesis investigates how indoor track and field facilities in temperate climates can be optimized to enhance athletic performance and well-being for student-athletes. While indoor tracks were originally developed to offer year-round training in colder regions, many current designs fail to address the dynamic needs of athletes affected by seasonal and climatic variations. Through analysis of climate’s physiological effects on performance—such as heat acclimation, cold-induced injury risks, and seasonal affective impacts—this research identifies key environmental conditions that influence success in track and field. Case studies, performance data, and interviews with colligate coaches inform a design framework that incorporates climate-responsive architecture, …

Assessment Of Nitrogen Source Utilization During Nitrogen Fixation And Nitrogenase Regulation By Methanosarcina Acetivorans, Avery Carter
Assessment Of Nitrogen Source Utilization During Nitrogen Fixation And Nitrogenase Regulation By Methanosarcina Acetivorans, Avery Carter
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Nitrogen is a crucial element in biomolecules such as proteins and DNA, essential for all cellular life. Biological nitrogen fixation, a process utilized by certain bacteria and archaea, reduces dinitrogen (N₂) to ammonia (NH₃), enabling growth in the absence of fixed nitrogen sources like NH₃. This process is driven by the metalloenzyme nitrogenase, which catalyzes the reaction: N₂ + 16ATP + 8e⁻ + 8H⁺ → 2NH₃ + H₂ + 16ADP + 16Pi. Due to its high energy demand, nitrogenase production and activity are tightly regulated. Among archaea, nitrogenase is found exclusively in methanogens, where its regulation remains poorly understood. We …

Patulin As A Negative Regulator Of Wild-Type Elp1 Splicing In Familial Dysautonomia-Derived Cells, Katherine P. Cáceres Bravo
FCRH Honors Program Theses
Although the human genome has a limited number of genes, alternative splicing allows the production of thousands of proteins. Alternative splicing is a regulated mechanism in which a messenger RNA (mRNA) synthesizes different proteins called isoforms, variants of the same protein that may have different cellular functions [1]. The unspliced sequence, also known as the primary transcript, results from the transcription of a genetic sequence by RNA Polymerase II, which produces an mRNA containing introns (non-coding regions) and exons (coding regions) [2]. The splicing process is catalyzed by the spliceosome, a ribonucleoprotein mega-particle composed of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), U1, …

An Analysis Of Cellular And Tissue Function Of Lipin In Drosophila Melanogaster, Judah Christian Scott
An Analysis Of Cellular And Tissue Function Of Lipin In Drosophila Melanogaster, Judah Christian Scott
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Regulation of energy expenditure and energy storage is a key characteristic of life. Numerous enzymes play a crucial role in regulating energy metabolism. Lipins are a highly conserved family of proteins that function in both lipid synthesis and gene regulation. In the glycerol-3 phosphate pathway, lipins act as a phosphatidate phosphatase (PAP) producing diacylglycerol. In gene regulation, lipins act as transcriptional co-regulators of metabolic genes. The enzymatic PAP activity occurs in the cytoplasm; however, for lipins to function as gene regulators, they must translocate into the nucleus. Nuclear translocation is facilitated by the nuclear localization signal (NLS) within the protein. …
