Hope After Grief And Loss: A Needs Assessment Of Peer-Led, Non-Denominational Bereavement Support Services At Laurel’S Grief Center, Julia A. Lange

Public Administration Master’s Projects

This needs assessment examines the grief support services provided by Laurel’s Grief Center (LGC), a nonprofit organization in Buffalo, New York, and identifies opportunities to expand tailored services for grieving adults in Western New York. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, this study collected data through semi-structured interviews with LGC board members and surveys with clients and peer volunteers. Key findings highlight the importance of peer-led, non-denominational grief support and creative approaches, such as art therapy, while identifying barriers, such as stigma, limited awareness, and fragmented regional services.

Based on these findings, this study recommends expanding healing arts programs, enhancing outreach …

The Relationship Between Social Media Marketing And Social Comparison On Pre-Adolescent Self-Esteem And Consumer Identity, Madison Kruse

CSB and SJU Distinguished Thesis

The current study aimed to address gaps in the literature regarding pre-adolescent social media usage by examining whether gender, social media marketing, and social comparison predict U.S. pre-adolescent (ages 8-12) self-esteem and consumer identity. A paper survey was administered to participants (N=43) through on-site and flyer recruitment methods. The survey consisted of questions regarding pre-adolescent social media usage time and preferences, self-esteem, social comparison, and consumer identity. Scales used were adaptations of The Child Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale (CRSES), The Social Media Comparison of Ability Scale (SCO-Ability), and the Consumer-Company Identification Scale. Results showed that pre-adolescents (ages 8-12) are exposed to …

Pancreatic Ascites: Update On Diagnosis And Management, Lefika Bathobakae, Heba Farhan, Derya Mücahit, Dina Rohira, Kashyap Chauhan, Yana Cavanagh, Walid Baddoura, Derick J Christian May 2025

Pancreatic Ascites: Update On Diagnosis And Management, Lefika Bathobakae, Heba Farhan, Derya Mücahit, Dina Rohira, Kashyap Chauhan, Yana Cavanagh, Walid Baddoura, Derick J Christian

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Pancreatic ascites is a rare condition characterized by the accumulation of high-amylase ascitic fluid in the peritoneal cavity. This condition is often associated with chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic trauma, or pseudocyst rupture. Because of its rarity and ill-defined clinical presentation, pancreatic ascites is often a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in clinical practice. The current diagnostic criteria include an amylase level >1000 mg/dL, a protein level >3 g/dL, and a serum ascites albumin gradient < 1.1 g/dL. The clinical features vary, but may include progressive abdominal distension, diffuse abdominal pain, weight loss and peritonitis. The management of pancreatic ascites remains controversial, and there is no consensus regarding the optimal approach. Conservative medical management, which includes nutritional support, pain control, therapeutic paracentesis and the use of somatostatin analogs, has been associated with a high failure rate and significant morbidity. Interventional therapies, such as surgery and endoscopic transpapillary stenting, have shown more promising outcomes. However, the choice between these methods is still debated, with some advocating for endoscopic approaches, because of their minimally invasive nature and reduced morbidity compared with surgical options. Endoscopic approaches remain underutilized in practice, probably because of the need for repeated interventions, the potential risks associated with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, or a lack of skilled personnel. Although they show significant perioperative morbidity and mortality, surgical options provide definitive resolution of pancreatic ascites. Herein, we provide an updated review of pancreatic ascites, highlighting advances in diagnostic techniques and therapeutic approaches, and summarizing insights from recent clinical cases and retrospective studies.

Exploring Healthcare Barriers: Perspectives Of Immigrants And Providers, Nazanin Zaer May 2025

Exploring Healthcare Barriers: Perspectives Of Immigrants And Providers, Nazanin Zaer

University Scholar Projects

Immigrants in the United States face significant barriers when accessing healthcare, despite healthcare being recognized as a fundamental human right. This literature review explores six key barriers: language difficulties, discrimination, cost, cultural differences, transportation issues, and challenges navigating a new healthcare system. Through the analysis of 23 peer-reviewed articles, this review identifies how each barrier affects healthcare access, quality, and outcomes for immigrant populations. Language barriers interfere with effective communication and trust, while discrimination—rooted in race, ethnicity, nationality, and immigration status—reduces the likelihood of seeking care. Financial constraints, including lack of insurance and high out-of-pocket costs, prevent timely medical intervention. …

Challenges Of The Novice Elementary Principal: A Framework For Elementary Principal Onboarding, Casey Stansifer

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative, multisite phenomenological study has two main foci. First, the study seeks to understand the unanticipated pain points each participant felt in the first two years of his or her principalship. The study inquires not into what the novice principals thought would hurt prior to their first two years on the job, but rather what they could not see coming even after having spent a considerable amount of time focusing on the principalship in their principal preparation programs. Second, the study seeks to understand what supports would be helpful to the novice principal in addressing these …

Challenges Threatening The Sustainability Of School Meal Programs, Anca Tughin May 2025

Challenges Threatening The Sustainability Of School Meal Programs, Anca Tughin

Master of Public Administration

The sustainability of school meal programs is increasingly threatened by procurement challenges, including regulatory constraints, supply chain disruptions, and budgetary pressures. This capstone project examines how values-based procurement (VBP)—which prioritizes local, sustainable, and nutritionally rich food—can be integrated into school meal programs despite these challenges. Worcester Public Schools (WPS) serves as a case study to illustrate the obstacles districts face in implementing VBP and the opportunities available for improving procurement models.

Key findings from this research highlight the following:
• Regulatory Constraints: Federal procurement policies, while intended to ensure fairness, often create barriers for schools trying to source locally or …

Creating The 15-Minute City: Public Engagement Strategies To Move People Away From Cars And Towards A More Walkable Worcester, Sarah Mount May 2025

Creating The 15-Minute City: Public Engagement Strategies To Move People Away From Cars And Towards A More Walkable Worcester, Sarah Mount

Master of Public Administration

The study of urban planning there has recently been a resurgence in the idea of a 15-minute city. A 15-minute city is a city where vital destinations are within a 15- minute walk or cycle from any resident. These cities flip the current car-centric method of transportation planning on its head, and instead ask planners to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists when designing streets. Previous studies show that 15-minute cities don’t just exist, they will take planning, infrastructure implementation, and possibly most importantly, resident buy-in. It is hard to achieve change in cities without having the support of your residents. Becoming …

"Beyond The Display:" How Exhibits In Museums Can Be Used To Educate Public Visitors, Ryder Wynn May 2025

"Beyond The Display:" How Exhibits In Museums Can Be Used To Educate Public Visitors, Ryder Wynn

Honors Theses

Museums are institutions that can be found outside of a classroom setting, where visitors can educate themselves about a certain topic presented in the exhibits that the museums display. They can do this by creating engaging environments where visitors can become invested into the story and information of the exhibits, making them want to learn more about the information provided. A good exhibit can do this in at least one of three ways: developing critical thinking skills, which can involve visual models or "learning through play," creating memorable experiences or using collective memory to teach about historical events or using …

Reconstructing Diets In Iron Age Ashkelon: A Stable Isotope Analysis, Delaney Ballard May 2025

Reconstructing Diets In Iron Age Ashkelon: A Stable Isotope Analysis, Delaney Ballard

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Diet can represent how different individuals within a population may be affected by famine, drought, or the fall of an empire. Bioarchaeologists observe patterns in human diet--and consequently, human experience--through generalized reconstructions of consumption via faunal and human skeletal remains. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes are an effective and accurate way of learning what past individuals consumed. By analyzing the stable carbon and nitrogen values derived from collagen in human bones, bioarchaeologists can ascertain the primary protein source of a person’s diet. This thesis used the theoretical framework of structural vulnerability and stable isotope analysis on secondary data to describe …
