Enhancing Care For Psychiatric Patients Boarding In The Emergency Department, Abby Ford
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
Psychiatric boarding in the emergency department has become a common phenomenon in emergency departments throughout the United States. The purpose of this DNP Scholarly Project was to create a quality improvement project to enhance the care that psychiatric patients receive while they are boarding in the emergency department (ED). This quality improvement project consisted of an educational PowerPoint module for ED nursing staff and the dissemination of a care plan that nursing staff utilized while caring for psychiatric patients in this specific ED. The target population for this scholarly project was emergency department nursing personnel in a 40-bed metropolitan ED. …
Sacred Seeds: The Transmission Of Knowledge Seen Through Aztec Religionand Agriculture, Ian S. Hohsfield
Sacred Seeds: The Transmission Of Knowledge Seen Through Aztec Religionand Agriculture, Ian S. Hohsfield
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The integration of religion and agriculture was a cornerstone of Aztec civilization, deeply influencing societal practices and knowledge systems. Scholars have long recognized the importance of religious rituals in ensuring agricultural success; however, the specific methods by which agricultural knowledge was transmitted within religious contexts—and how these methods may have contributed to knowledge gaps—remain underexplored. This thesis investigates the relationship between Aztec religious practices and the transmission of agricultural knowledge, focusing on how the methods of knowledge transmission influenced agricultural expertise and led to potential gaps. It does so by analyzing primary sources such as the Florentine Codex and the …
Addressing Postpartum Depression: A Counseling Group For Women After Childbirth, Christine Bolton
Addressing Postpartum Depression: A Counseling Group For Women After Childbirth, Christine Bolton
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Postpartum depression is a global concern for women which can often go undiagnosed and untreated (Carlson et al., 2024). The consequences resulting from lack of treatment can be detrimental to both mother and child (Wall, 2021). Overcoming the symptoms of postpartum depression involves social support, coping strategies, education, and early intervention (Avrand et al., 2022; Dimcea et al., 2024; Wang et al., 2021). Current research will be discussed on the understanding of postpartum depression, risk factors, protective factors, the barriers to treatment that exist, current treatments that exist, and the effectiveness of treatment modalities. A group manual was developed that …
Radical Resilience: Empowering Mothers And Defeating Barriers Through Accessible Trauma Treatments, Kristen Dodds
Radical Resilience: Empowering Mothers And Defeating Barriers Through Accessible Trauma Treatments, Kristen Dodds
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Maternal trauma refers to the emotional and psychological wounds experienced by mothers (Powers, 2022). This kind of trauma, particularly in mothers affected by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and domestic violence, has a profound impact not only on maternal mental health and physical well-being, but also on mothers’ role as primary caregivers. Trauma has the potential to negatively affect future generations, and as a result, there is an urgent need for effective, accessible trauma treatment options. However, systemic barriers such as financial limitations, challenges in acquiring childcare, isolation, limited information, and lack of time make traditional therapy approaches inaccessible to many survivors. …
Stirring The Senses: A Culinary Model Of Neuroplastic Healing In Expressive Arts Therapy, Nell J. Benedict
Stirring The Senses: A Culinary Model Of Neuroplastic Healing In Expressive Arts Therapy, Nell J. Benedict
Expressive Therapies Theses
This thesis advocates for cooking as a multimodal expressive arts intervention through the lens of the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) and neuroplasticity. It argues that culinary practice engages all levels of the ETC simultaneously, from embodied, kinesthetic experience to emotional and relational processing, cognitive meaning-making, and creative integration. Drawing on literature in somatic processing, emotion and memory, neuroscience, and creative arts therapy, cooking is conceptualized as an embodied practice that supports psychological and neurological integration. Its repetition and emotional salience are considered in relation to neuroplasticity, suggesting potential for fostering more adaptive ways of relating to nourishment and to oneself. …

Assessing One-Year Health Impacts From Wildfires In Rural Communities: Roles For Extension In Promoting Wildfire Preparedness And Recovery, Marc T. Braverman, Sandi Cleveland Phibbs, Emily Jane Davis, Amanda Rau, Elijah Penner
Journal of Extension
Wildfires can produce health impacts that persist for years in affected communities. This article describes an Extension-led study of health impacts in rural Oregon communities one year after a destructive wildfire. Data collection included key informant interviews (n=36), an online survey (n=80), and three focus group interviews with survivors (n=23). Mental health, exposure to contaminants, physical stress, food insecurity, and other issues were frequently identified health concerns. Survivors’ difficulties in dealing with housing displacement significantly exacerbated health challenges. We describe potential roles for Extension in addressing wildfire risk and mitigating health impacts, including a description of the Oregon Fire Program.

Focus groups are commonly used in extension. Extension professionals can encounter unique challenges when conducting focus groups. Extension literature is replete with best practices for conducting focus groups, but there is a lack of systematically documented practical challenges and strategies for overcoming them. We share the challenges we have faced over the past 13 years while conducting focus groups with different participant groups in extension globally and strategies that can be used to overcome or navigate these challenges. The ideas presented in this paper can provide valuable assistance to extension professionals who utilize focus groups for research and evaluation purposes.

The Connection Between An Unequitable Distribution Of Care Responsibilities And A Widening Gender Nutrition Gap In Latin America, Alexis Nicole Bodlak
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The notion of care refers to activities that satisfy the basic needs of existence and reproduction. Within rural communities, care work such as the production and preparation of food contributes to food security at the household level. Care work supports the paid workforce, allowing workers to focus on commercial productive activities that generate economic income in rural communities. Women perform 6.3 to 29.5 more hours per week than men in unpaid care work, reducing their time for income-generating activities and personal nutrition management. Affecting their economic independence and ability to access and consume nutritious food. Studies show that in food-insecure …
Climate Shocks, Crop Yields, And School Enrollment In Rural Ethiopia, Mallika Matharu
Climate Shocks, Crop Yields, And School Enrollment In Rural Ethiopia, Mallika Matharu
Master's Theses
This study investigates how climate-induced shocks to agricultural productivity affect school enrollment in rural Ethiopia. Using five waves of panel data from the Ethiopia Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) and satellite-derived weather indicators, I estimate the causal effects of crop yields, specifically Teff, Sorghum, and Maize, on children’s school attendance. To address the endogeneity of agricultural output, I instrument crop yields with agro-climatic measures such as growing degree days (GDD), harmful degree days (HDD), and soil moisture during the Meher growing season. The main empirical strategy uses a two-stage instrumental variable approach with region and wave fixed effects. Results suggest …

#Strongertogether, Can Symbols Of Nationalism Be Transformed? A Case Study Of The Springboks: South Africa’S National Rugby Team, Selorm Djameh
Master's Theses
This study examines whether symbols, particularly those associated with nationalism, can undergo transformation in meaning and be co-opted to represent ideas or values contrary to their original intent. To explore this question, the study employs the case of the Springbok emblem, a symbol historically linked to the South African national rugby team. Originally, the Springbok was closely associated with the apartheid regime, embodying Afrikaner nationalism, exceptionalism, and, by extension, White supremacy. However, in the post-apartheid era, there have been growing efforts to reimagine the Springbok symbol by promoting greater inclusivity within the national rugby team. These efforts aim to transform …

Exploring Extension Agents' Understandings Of Local And Resilient Food Systems, Hannah Dankbar, Brooke Matusko
Journal of Extension
Currently, there is a focus on bolstering local food systems to support overall food system resilience. Local and resilient food systems, though related, are distinct concepts. Their use in food system development is complicated by varying interpretations. Data from a survey of North Carolina Extension agents, a group of food system practitioners, identified a range of definitions of these terms. The results underscore the complex landscape of local food system development and identify a need to build on conceptual understandings within the Extension community and establish shared understandings within food system development efforts.

Expanding Extension Involvement Through An Undergraduate Life Skills Course, Stacey F. Stearns, Aditi Rao
Journal of Extension
Extension traditionally involves undergraduate students through experiential learning and internships. We sought to develop a new model, and created an undergraduate life skills course for students in our college that featured Extension educators as guest lecturers in areas aligned with their specialty. Universities have a stable population of potential program participants, volunteers, and employees. It is imperative that we raise awareness about Extension while the students are enrolled in our institutions. Creating a for-credit undergraduate course that teaches life skills through Extension programs has tangible benefits for both the students and the Extension system.

Soybean Oil-Derived Acrylate/Methacrylate Ether For High Resolution Additive Manufacturing (3d Printing) Technology, Tanuj Patel
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Additive Manufacturing is one of the rapidly developing techniques, as industries continue to explore new ways to create prototypes and end-use parts, one of the significant challenges that remains is the reliance on petroleum-based plastics for 3D printing, especially in the production of photocurable resins. that may be used to prototype complex structures and sophisticated geometries that are typically challenging to produce with conventional methods. Thus, replacing petroleum-based plastics with renewable resources is increasingly important for additive manufacturing (3D printing) of photocurable resins. The use of bio-based renewable resources in AM is a feasible alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. Henceforth, …

Weather Impacts On Migration And Food Insecurity In Bangladesh, Brendon M. Wong, Andrew Hobbs
Master's Theses
This paper analyzes the impact of weather shocks on household migration and food insecurity, and the mechanisms in which they do so. As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, subsistence farmers remain extremely vulnerable and can experience decreases in welfare. Using the Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey, we construct a panel dataset to measure the effects of temperature and rainfall on remittance amounts, food consumption scores, and child wasting z-scores. We observe that weather has strong impacts on these outcomes but are dependent on the rice variety and growing season. We do not find strong evidence that the mechanism in …
