Improving User Experience Through Bedroom Lighting Services For Older People Living In Personal Houses, Mei-Yung Leung, Yueran Li
CIB Conferences
The global ageing tendency underscores the necessity for indoor building services to accommodate the needs of older adults. Bedroom lighting services encompass both natural and electric lighting as well as supporting facilities such as light control, shading devices, and anti-reflection finishes. It facilitates visual interactions between occupants and their living environment. The user experience of older people reflects the extent to which current bedroom lighting services address their needs, which significantly influences their well-being in later years. Key aspects valued by older users can be divided into the sufficiency of task lighting, evenness during movement, navigation in the room, convenience, …
Developing Amenities To Create More Sustainable And Inclusive Human Settlements, Jeremy Thobo Gibberd Dr
Developing Amenities To Create More Sustainable And Inclusive Human Settlements, Jeremy Thobo Gibberd Dr
CIB Conferences
Sustainable human settlements are the totality of any organised human community whether a city, town or village. This includes amenities such as parks, sports facilities, libraries, schools and clinics. Rapid urbanisation and a lack of resources in many developing countries, such as South Africa, mean that some human settlements may not have these amenities. A lack of amenities in human settlements affects the quality of life and hampers the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those for health (SDG3), education (SDG4), inequality (SDG10), and sustainable cities (SDG11). In South Africa, a lack of amenities in human settlements also affects …

Sidewalk Pavement Defect Detection With Instance Segmentation: A Step Towards Improving Sidewalk Quality, Abdul-Mugis Yussif, Tarek Zayed, Ridwan Taiwo, Ali Fares
CIB Conferences
Making cities walkable and supportive of non-motorized transportation enhances sustainability and inclusivity. Sidewalks, the primary infrastructure in direct contact with pedestrians to support their daily travel needs, deteriorate and develop faults with time and continuous use. However, manual and commonly available non-destructive inspections often are slow, labor-intensive, and cost-inhibitive. This study proposes a quick and cheap method using instance segmentation techniques to detect sidewalk pavement surface defects automatically. The proposed methods are two instance innovative approaches to train the Mask R-CNN (MRCNN) instance segmentation model to identify and provide the respective boundaries of each defect. The first and most reliable …

Evaluation Of The Hygrothermal Behavior Of A Full-Scale Adobe Evaporative Cooler: A Possible Solution For Food Storage In Vulnerable Communities., Camila Catherine De Morais Cassundé, Andrea Naguissa Yuba
CIB Conferences
Using evaporative cooling to preserve food using artisanal construction techniques on land is an alternative to provide more autonomy for vulnerable communities. Still, studies are needed to prove their efficiency under different conditions. An adobe evaporative cooler with a capacity for 1 ton of produce was developed and built by Davalo (2021) in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil, and required additional studies of hygrothermal behavior and efficiency. To give sequence to her work, this research is conducted by the same lab, and aimed to determine the best operating conditions of this cooler through complementary real measurements of hygrothermal performance and determine …

Global estimates indicate that the construction industry has one of the highest rates of occupational accidents. Given this scenario, the sector has adopted emergent technologies to improve safety conditions and decision-making. Thus, machine learning (ML) emerges as a promising tool to streamline data analysis besides being used to predict events based on datasets. In construction, the use of the ML model to predict site accidents remains emerging without studies using historical data from emerging South and Latin American countries. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a prediction model using machine learning for fatal accidents using historical data from construction. The …

Holistic Care For Breastfeeding Patients: Supporting Lactation In Critical Care, Marisa Francis Dnp, Rn, Cne, Clc, Adreanne Cordova Msn, Rn, Cne, Chse, Clc
Nursing Research and Scholarship
This poster emphasizes the critical need for support for breastfeeding patients in critical care units, such as Adult ICUs and Emergency Departments. Many breastfeeding patients experience disrupted breastfeeding during hospitalization, leading to issues like engorgement, mastitis, decrease in milk supply, and loss of the breastfeeding bond. Despite this, the importance of maintaining breastfeeding during hospitalization is often overlooked, and patients are often told to "pump and dump" (discard expressed milk), a practice that can harm both the infant's nutrition and the breastfeeding relationship.
Research indicates that continued breastfeeding for patients in critical care areas is safe and beneficial for both …

Ngo Decision-Making During Typhoon Disaster Response: Towards A Relational Approach, Pamela Gloria Cajilig, Mona Nasser
Peninsula Dental School
This paper examines the decision-making processes of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) during Typhoon Odette (Rai) in Palawan, Philippines. The typhoon, which struck during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, exacerbated vulnerabilities in the province, leading to the destruction of homes and livelihoods, disruptions in education, fatalities and damage to critical infrastructure. Focusing on a health- and development-centred NGO, the qualitative case study draws from phenomenological approaches to decision-making and studies that emphasise relational ontologies. The discussion employs a framework that categorises decision-making into three types of processes that underscore the latter's entangled nature: ‘knot’ represents situations of confusion and desperation and where …

Introduction Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. Survivors often experience physical and psychological effects arising from breast cancer and its treatment, which can last months and years, adversely impacting quality of life. As the number of early breast cancer survivors increases, models of specialist-led follow-up care in hospital settings are not sustainable and evidence suggests that they may not meet survivors’ needs. Nurse-enabled, shared-care, follow-up models between cancer specialist and primary care teams have potential to address this need. Methods and analysis The proposed research is a multicentre, prospective, pragmatic, stepped-wedge cluster-randomised trial designed to …

Reducing fishmeal (FM) in aquaculture diets is essential for improving sustainability and reducing reliance on marine resources. Black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens) larvae meal is a promising alternative protein source. This study evaluated the effects of replacing FM with BSF meal on the growth and health of juvenile yellowtail kingfish (YTK) (Seriola lalandi, initial weight ~22 g). Fish were reared in 24 tanks (three replicates per treatment) and fed for 33 days under controlled conditions. Eight diets were tested: a control (40% FM) and seven diets with BSF meal replacing FM at 25%, 50%, or 75%, …

Branching Corals Modulate Their Hydrodynamic Environment, Enhancing Capture Rates Of Evasive Prey, Kelsey Daniels
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Reef-building corals obtain nutrients through two primary means: autotrophy (via mutualism with photosynthetic zooxanthellae) and heterotrophy (via feeding). The latter form of resource acquisition is understudied and many aspects of predator-prey interactions between coral and naturally occurring prey species remain unexplored. In this thesis, I elucidate the role of branching coral morphology in shaping the colony’s local hydrodynamic environment and describe how this environment impacts prey capture, particularly among evasive and hydrodynamically sensitive, but highly abundant prey such as copepods. I used acrylic cylinders of three sizes in aquaria to model the structure of coral branches across the range of …

Food For Thought: Binge Planning Cognitions And Behaviors Within An Online Sample Of Adults With Binge-Type Eating Disorders, Rose H. Miller
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research has begun exploring the phenomenon of binge planning, wherein individuals who binge eat do so with forethought, rather than impulsively. What specific thought processes and behaviors comprise binge plans remains unexamined. How, or if, the eating disorder presentations of individuals who plan binges ahead of time differ from those who binge impulsively is also still unknown. The present study sought to explore the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors associated with binge planning, and to identify how the motivations, symptomologies, and personality traits (i.e., impulsivity) differ between binge eaters who do or do not plan their binges. An online study using …

Introduction: Obesity and mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are significant global health concerns (1). Dietary interventions may improve physical and mental health, likely via gut microbiome changes. This study assesses the feasibility of the MIND diet and its effects on weight loss, mental well-being, and gut microbiome composition in adults with obesity.
Method: This 12-week pilot randomized controlled trial includes two arms: an intervention group following the MIND diet and a control group assigned recommendations for a balanced diet. The study will recruit 126 adults with obesity in Sweden. Data collection includes body measurements, mental health questionnaires, …

There is only one of the loved one you know.
Often it can be hard to let go.
Five years old the world became cold.
Lost my mother to breast cancer.
A cold wound that can’t be answered
Father raised you in a foreign land.
Drove you to school, combed your hair, gave you a life you could have never planned.
Taught me that I would catch a cold from the wind.
No arguing about modern medicine, my dad was thick skinned,
Here comes college, first generation, what an exciting time.
Get to medical school so exciting; here comes the …

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory conditions that primarily involve the gastrointestinal tract, but also cause widespread systemic inflammation. There have been multiple studies investigating the link between ulcerative colitis (UC) and crohn’s disease (CD) and thyroid diseases, as the incidence is greater than the general population.1 In addition, patients with IBD have been found to be at increased risk of developing both intestinal malignancies and extra-intestinal malignancies.2 Literature review suggests a possible connection between ulcerative colitis and papillary thyroid cancer, with most studies concluding there is a higher risk of PTC in patients with UC, but …
Differences In Physical Activity Levels And Adiposity Among Children With Special Educational Needs: Disparities In Gender And Sen Type, Min Yang
International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
Introduction Children with special educational needs (SEN) encounter significant challenges in participating in physical activity (PA) and are experiencing rising obesity rates (Liang et al., 2020; Poon et al., 2023). This cross-sectional study aimed at exploring differences in PA levels and adiposity among children based on gender and SEN types, providing insights for tailored interventions.
Methodology The cross-sectional study involved 134 school-aged children (mean age: 8.9 ± 1.4 years; 83.6% boys) from eight mainstream primary schools. The wrist-worn ActiGraph GT9X accelerometers assessed the PA levels. Adiposity indicators (body mass index and body fat percentage) were measured by …

Outdoor active play during early childhood supports healthy child development and is a fundamental right for all children. Childcare centres are one of the first opportunities for participation in active play among children with and without disabilities, presenting a potential space for inclusive outdoor active play to occur. Children with disabilities (CWD) face many barriers to participation resulting in exclusion within the childcare setting, especially when outdoors. To promote and sustain outdoor active play during early childhood for all children, this project aimed to understand parent and early childhood educator perspectives of barriers and facilitators to outdoor active play for …

International Symposium of Adapted Physical Activity and International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
Introduction The weight status disparity in children with special educational needs (SEN) is associated with physical activity (PA) (Jebeile et al., 2022; Lister et al., 2023), which can vary between weekdays and weekends among school-aged children but remains underexplored (Brazendale et al., 2021). This study explored the association between PA during weekdays versus weekends and adiposity among children with SEN in Hong Kong.
Methodology A sample of 157 school-aged children with SEN (mean age: 8.7 ± 1.4 years; 82.2% boys) participated in this cross-sectional study. Wrist-worn ActiGraph GT9X accelerometers were used to measure PA, …

Progressive strength and balance training enhances physical function in older adults with decreased functional capacity
Introduction
In Finland, one third of people aged 70 and over fall each year. Each hip fracture costs approximately €30 000 (Kannus et al. 2018, Sotkanet 2025, Finnish Medical Society Duodecim 2017). Strength and balance training (SBT) improves muscle strength, functional capacity, and quality of life, and can prevent half of fall-related fractures (Sherrington et al. 2019, Levy et al. 2020, Oberholster et al. 2020, Wang et al. 2020). However, the implementation of fall prevention is still incomplete (Reis et al. 2016). Our aim was …
