The Immunological Benefits Of Breast Feeding (Review Article), Ahmed Al-Harbi, Asmaa Shetawi
The Immunological Benefits Of Breast Feeding (Review Article), Ahmed Al-Harbi, Asmaa Shetawi
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
Breast feeding (BF) provides infants with the most suitable nutrients from birth tell weaning. The major part of mother breast milk (MBM) is water in which the other components dissolve. These components include nutrients and immune factors. The concentration of these components varies by time after delivery. Breast milk even provides infants with various types of bacterial species that contribute for development of infant microbiota.Components that are regarded important for shaping of infant immune response include different factors. MBM contains oligosaccharides which are associated with guts defenses, cytokines that participate in inflammation and immune cells activation, immunoglobulins that arm infant’s …

Assessment Of Preoperative Factors In Relation With Difficulty Of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Ahmed Nayyef, Hayder Alkawaz
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
IntroductionLaparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard for treatment of gallbladder diseases It is relatively a simple and quick procedure, but it can be difficult, and needs special instruments and an experienced surgeon. Moreover, in specific situations, conversion from laparoscopic to open approach is still required. However, identifying the preoperative patient-related factors, and anticipating the need to convert from laparoscopic cholecystectomy to open surgery can help identifying high-risk patients and redefine the surgical strategy needed Aim:Assessing laparoscopic cholecystectomies, by identifying the preoperative factors that predict the difficulty of laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Patients and MethodA prospective cross-sectional study conducted in Al Yarmouk Teaching Hospital …

Malnutrition decreases intestinal bile acids, resulting in inefficient nutrient absorption and impaired catch-up growth. Mechanisms by which bile acid depletion occurs in malnutrition are unknown. Using a mouse model of early-life malnutrition, we explored bile acid homeostasis, focusing on transcriptional repression of CYP7B1, a rate-limiting enzyme in the alternative pathway of bile acid biosynthesis, by SREBP-1c, a master regulator of lipid metabolism. Mice were maintained on a low-protein low-fat or isocaloric control chow until eight weeks of age when livers were harvested for proteome profiling, western blot, RT-qPCR, and chromatin immunoprecipitation. Cultured hepatocytes and mice were treated with the SREBP-1c …

Diet is a major modifiable risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2D), and suboptimal diets continue to contribute substantially to the population burden of T2D. Personalized nutrition proponents argue that specializing recommendations to interindividual differences in diet-health relationships will yield reductions in disease risk. However, how to personalize diet, and to whom, to reduce T2D risk remains unclear. Metabolites offer promise in this respect, as they capture (in part) dietary intake after the processes of digestion, processing, and absorption. The incorporation of metabolite data into diet-health studies therefore offers the opportunity to examine how the effects of food on the …

The Effect Of Individual Variation On Epidemiological Dynamics: From Super-Spreaders To Landscapes Of Risk, Alexis Shannon Beagle
The Effect Of Individual Variation On Epidemiological Dynamics: From Super-Spreaders To Landscapes Of Risk, Alexis Shannon Beagle
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Individuals that make up a population always display some level of variation between members. At the smallest scale, individuals always maintain genetic variation, but variation continues to arise at other scales of biological organization from physiological or immunological variation within individuals to variation in behavior between individuals that can be both genetically and environmentally mediated. The role of individual variation is particularly important in the context of infectious diseases because there is strong evidence that infections are highly heterogenous, indicating that patterns of individual variation drive a significant portion of the epidemiological patterns we observe. Individual variation leads to heterogeneity …

Through A Mother's Eyes: The Psychology Of Color, Katie Kutz
Theses
This project investigates the intersection of color psychology, maternal experience, and visual perception through a series of five artworks. Using a qualitative methodology, this project draws upon interdisciplinary research such as neuroscience, marketing, art history, and personal experiences as a mother. This work explores how sensory changes during pregnancy and postpartum influence the emotional perception of color, and how this can be represented in art. Inspired by artists that have explored the theme of motherhood such as Mary Cassatt, Käthe Kollwitz, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Jenny Saville, and Alice Neel, this project uses an emotionally charged approach to depicting motherhood. Color changing …

One in six youth has a neurodevelopmental disability (NDD), and autism diagnostic rates continue to rise. Before and after a diagnosis, families need trusted sources of guidance to navigate co-occurring medical and psychological conditions, and to manage unique stressors including transition to adulthood. However, medical professionals from all specialty areas struggle to identify resources to support the complex psychosocial and healthcare needs of these patients and their families. This primer on psychosocial supports for youth with autism will explore the major mental and physical health stressors faced by affected youth and families, and discuss opportunities for primary care and other …

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by sports-related incidents in children and youth often leads to prolonged cognitive impairments but remains difficult to diagnose. In order to identify clinically relevant imaging and behavioral biomarkers associated concussion, a closed-head mTBI was induced in adolescent pigs. Twelve (n = 4 male and n = 8 female), 16-week old Yucatan pigs were tested; n = 6 received mTBI and n = 6 received a sham procedure. T1-weighted imaging was used to assess volumetric alterations in different regions of the brain and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to examine microstructural damage in white matter. The …

Positive patient experience is associated with improved patient outcomes, but efforts to improve patient experience are often underprioritized, especially with respect to pediatric care. To address this challenge, leaders at several US children's hospitals established the Pediatric Experience Collaborative (PEC) in 2016 to leverage their collaboration and scale to optimize patient, family, and provider experiences. Since then, the PEC has steadfastly incorporated the patient and family perspective in all its endeavors (e.g., installing a family member as one of the organization's co-chairs); has created both structured opportunities and unstructured opportunities for learning and connection; and has embarked on multi-institutional research …

Master of Medicine in Clinical Pathology
Background
Patients admitted to the hospital have been reported to have coagulation abnormalities due to various factors including immobilisation, preexisting disease, and current illness. The overall incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in critically ill patients varies from 15% to well over 50%, even with the use of prophylactic measures in most patients. Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and unfractionated heparin (UFH) are the recommended drugs for VTE prophylaxis in inpatient care. Although not standardly recommended, the laboratory can offer monitoring of anti-Factor Xa using the gold standard method of chromogenic anti-Factor X assay. The anti-Factor Xa levels are notably affected …

Investigating The Ecology Of The Homeless Court: The Promise Of Quasi-Experimental And Statistical Learning Methods, Dylan Wong
Theses and Dissertations
Interactions with the legal system are a crucial factor in maintaining homelessness. Difficulties in addressing legal issues are barriers to accessing services and finding employment and housing. Across the United States, the homeless court is an emerging legal program that has been developed to break this cycle, but they appear to face numerous capacity and coordination problems. Few empirical and systematic investigations have been conducted on homeless court programs. Further, previous studies of homeless courts focus their process and outcome measures on the priorities of the legal system. An investigation into the ecology, or environmental context, of homeless persons would …

Background:
Prebiotic fiber has been examined as a way to foster gut bacteria less associated with obesity. Tests of prebiotic fiber in reducing obesity have occurred mainly in animals, adults, and Caucasians when the highest obesity rates are in African American and Latinx youth. Response to prebiotic fiber is determined by the pre-existing intestinal microbiota. The type of microbiota varies based on diet and physical activity (PA), so it is important to examine acceptability and response to prebiotic fiber in those most at risk for obesity.
Methods:
This cluster randomized controlled feasibility trial included an online program designed to improve …

IMPORTANCE: Associations between childhood obesity and brain microstructural differences have been observed. It remains unknown whether these associations are driven by sex-specific excessive weight gain. Restriction spectrum imaging characterizes brain tissue microstructural health via water diffusion, where the restricted normalized isotropic (RNI) compartment assesses neuronal and glial cellularity, which may reflect neuroinflammation, synaptic pruning, or both.
OBJECTIVE: To identify associations among RNI scaling factor values, normal neurodevelopment, and weight gain during early adolescence.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, a 10-year, ongoing, multisite longitudinal cohort study conducted among youths …
