In microbiome analysis, researchers often seek to identify taxonomic features associated with an outcome of interest. However, microbiome features are intercorrelated and linked by phylogenetic relationships, making it challenging to assess the association between an individual feature and an outcome. This paper proposes a novel conditional association test, CAT, that can account for other features and phylogenetic relatedness when testing the association between a feature and an outcome. CAT adopts a permutation approach, measuring the importance of a feature in predicting the outcome by permuting operational taxonomic unit/amplicon sequence variant counts belonging to that feature from the data and quantifying …

Correlated phenotypic traits (i.e., syndromes) may manifest as associations between different behavioural types or between behavioural and non-behavioural phenotypes. While syndromes research is extensive, correlations involving behavioural type and sensory morphology have yet to be investigated. Sensation is essential in decision-making and should be correlated with behavioural phenotypes involved in risk response, including boldness. We investigated correlations between boldness and sensory capacity in Pagurus bernhardus hermit crabs, taking repeat measures of startle response durations to assess hermit crab personality and predictability. The correlation between startle response and the sensillar density (i.e., number of sensilla per unit surface area) of both …

Innovating For Improvement — Improving Pressure Damage Prevention And Treatment In The Community Using Continuous Pressure Monitoring, Bridie Kent, Nicci Aylward-Wotton, Peter R. Worsley
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Each year, approximately half a million people in the UK develop pressure ulcers (PUs), with most occurring in the community among individuals with underlying comorbidities, frailty, mobility issues and a dependence on carers. Pressure relief is essential for healing, however, some patients find pressure-relieving equipment uncomfortable, hot and noisy, thus refusing to use it and are, therefore, often labelled as non-concordant. This service improvement project evaluated the ForeSite PT® pressure monitor to identify PU risk, support healing and influence patient and carer decision making, assessing its useability, alongside patient and carer education. The technology consisted of a mattress- and chair-sized …

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Greenspaces provide several well-being (Dinnie et al., 2013) and psychosocial benefits (Addy et al., 2004). Community-engaged research affords community partners a voice in the project (Cushman et al., 2004). This study assessed Detroit community members’ perceived benefits of and suggestions for engaging with the community to support greenspaces. Through qualitative analysis, a three-step process for community-engaged planning was revealed. Findings highlight strategies that involve community members in this process to enhance community engagement and well-being.

Conversations In Isolation: A Mixed-Methods, Multi-Perspective Evaluation Of Extreme Electronic Service Learning During Covid-19, Lauren M. Dinour, Jennifer Y. Daclan
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Due to physical proximity constraints imposed by COVID-19, extreme electronic service learning (e-service-learning)—instruction and service offered completely online—allowed for the safe continuation of service-learning experiences. Using a combination of surveys and an autoethnographic approach, this study describes findings of an intergenerational extreme e-service-learning project from four perspectives: students, assisted living facility residents, community partner, and course instructor. Positive impacts were noted on personal, social, and learning contexts among each of the four perspectives.

We describe the structure, benefits, and challenges associated with a virtual cultural heritage exchange (VCHE) between undergraduate students in an applied anthropology class and a group of English language learners (ELL). Using qualitative data collection and analysis methods, the project aimed to teach anthropological methods and perspectives to the students while investigating three research questions: Will a VCHE (1) build social bonds and bridges, (2) improve English language acquisition, and (3) raise “heritage consciousness” (awareness and appreciation of, along with an associated sense of agency toward, cultural heritage) among participants? Results support the research questions and show the effectiveness of …

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
A midwestern Jesuit university worked to align an existing IPE program with a new core curriculum and its corresponding student learning outcomes (SLO’s). This paper describes the collaborative curriculum development process used within an institution to develop its first University Core Curriculum. The University-core curriculum development process resulted in a framework, outcomes, and essential criteria associated with nine student learning outcomes (SLO’s). To address this new framework, faculty developed new and revised IPE learning experiences to align with University SLO’s and core attributes. This produced three IPE courses that simultaneously address the health profession program’s unique accreditation requirements, IPE competencies, …

INTRODUCTION:
In India, hypertensive renal disease, the second leading cause of chronic kidney failure, necessitates dialysis or renal transplantation. Most traditional renal function indicators, such as serum urea and creatinine, track disease progression and therapy response. Cystatin C, an excellent glomerular filtration rate (GFR) indicator, is freely filtered through the glomerular membrane, and its concentration is solely dictated by GFR. About 25%–40% of untreated hypertensives develop hyperuricemia. Microalbuminuria is a traditional renal function biomarker and outcome predictor in renal disease patients. This research compared blood cystatin C to standard renal function indicators (serum urea, serum creatinine [Scr], serum uric acid, …

INTRODUCTION:
Millets, with their exceptional nutritional value, nonglutinous nature, and digestive ease, offer a wealth of benefits. They are rich in lecithin and known to fortify the nervous system. While millets such as jowar are dietary staples in rural India, they have often been relegated to animal feed and birdseed elsewhere. Despite India’s deep-rooted millet tradition, the consumption of pearl millet (bajra) declined by 67% in urban and 59% in rural areas between 1972–1973 and 2004–2005. Recognizing their potential, the Indian Government proposed the declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millets to the UN.

OBJECTIVES:
The objective of the study was to study birth weight pattern of newborn babies and to find determinants of LBW among babies born to women using Mishri during pregnancy and to construct predictive …
Exploring The Legacy Of Brillat-Savarin In The Written Works Of Auguste Escoffier, Mathieu Belledent
Exploring The Legacy Of Brillat-Savarin In The Written Works Of Auguste Escoffier, Mathieu Belledent
Journal of Franco-Irish Studies
In the early nineteenth century, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin and Alexandre-Balthazar-Laurent Grimod de La Reynière laid the foundations of modern food writing. Subsequently, the publication of Brillat-Savarin’s La Physiologie Du Goût in 1825 changed the landscape of food writing. His approach was at the root of a marriage between the art of prose and the art of cooking; he associated art with gastronomy. Although he only wrote a single book, he achieved great success, which contributed to the modernisation of a gastronomic society and to the development of French cuisine. Brillat-Savarin was admired by the great culinary artist Marie-Antoine Carême, who, …

This book addresses three important questions for South Carolina beekeepers – which plants are bees in South Carolina using for nectar forage, when bees collect nectar from those plants, and how can understanding nectar foraging habits inform beekeepers as they work to gather specific types of premium honey? In 2021, the South Carolina Beekeeper’s Association, led by David MacFawn, designed and implemented a statewide pollen study, the first in any state in over fifty years, to answer these questions. Informed by data gathered from 19 apiaries across the state, this book contains the results of that study, including large-scale melissopalynological …
