The Recurring Appeals Of The Mormon Rhetorical Vision, Arthur Thomas Challis Jan 1992

The Recurring Appeals Of The Mormon Rhetorical Vision, Arthur Thomas Challis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates the recurring appeals of the Mormon rhetorical vision, appeals that help account for the growth of the Mormon Church which is now eight million; Bormann's Fantasy Theme Analysis, a communication model that explains how small groups develop imaginative ideas and concepts called fantasy themes that form rhetorical visions and chain out to society, is the overall methodology used in investigating the Mormon vision, while Fisher's narrative fidelity and coherence, and Rieke and Sillars' American Value Systems are used as procedural enhancements to Bormann's model; This rhetorical vision displays fidelity with three American value systems while partaking in …

The Southern Utah Expedition Of Parley P. Pratt: 1849-1850, Rick J. Fish Jan 1992

The Southern Utah Expedition Of Parley P. Pratt: 1849-1850, Rick J. Fish

Theses and Dissertations

In 1849, President Brigham Young commissioned a fifty man company, headed by Parley P. Pratt, to explore Southern Utah for possible colonization. The four month trek spanned the coldest months of the winter, and afforded some very harrowing and hazardous experiences. These events weave a heroic story filled with excitement and adventure, while simultaneously revealing the tremendous dedication and fortitude on the part of the explorers to successfully complete their mission.

Many of the Southern Utah colonies that were initiated in the subsequent years following the expedition were based on information gathered during this seven-hundred mile expedition. In addition, their …

Resurrection And The New Age, Patrick R. Keifert Jan 1991

Resurrection And The New Age, Patrick R. Keifert

Faculty Publications

As as a general indicator of developing religious sensibilities in American culture, the New Age bears continued Christian interest. It remains, at the very least, a very important resource for understanding trends in American culture and for identifying opportunities for Christian theology and mission. Among these opportunities that New Age movements provide for Christian theology and mission is the opportunity to address religious and metaphysical questions which for many years have been of little interest to a general audience. These metaphysical questions include popular discussion of cosmology, ontology, God, the soul, free will, and a renewed interest in religious experience.

Mormons And Germany, 1914-1933: A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Germany And Its Relationship With The German Governments From World War I To The Rise Of Hitler, Jeffery L. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This paper focuses on the Church's struggle in establishing itself in Germany with cultural, social, political and religious problems. The cultural and social problems focus primarily on the interaction between Mormon-American missionaries and leaders who preached Mormonism in a society somewhat different from their own. The political problems concern historical events such as the first world war, the inflation of 1923 in Germany, and the rise of Hitler, while the religious problems focus on the Church's interaction with other faiths who generally opposed it and the struggle of missionaries to establish congregations.

The Social Origins Of The Kirtland Mormons, Mark R. Grandstaff, Milton Vaughn Backman Jr. Apr 1990

The Social Origins Of The Kirtland Mormons, Mark R. Grandstaff, Milton Vaughn Backman Jr.

BYU Studies

Kirtland, Ohio, was settled mostly by New Englanders prior to the arrival of a group of Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) in 1831. The Mormons came from New York and New England. These settlers were part of a westward movement of people looking for more farmland and a better climate than was found in New England and New York. The Mormons who came to Kirtland were not transients; about 95 percent had moved two times before or fewer. This article looks at schooling, wealth, and religiosity of the Mormons in Kirtland. It includes diary …

Three Women Saints In The Thirteenth Century: Mentalities And Roles, Ulrike Strasser Apr 1990

Three Women Saints In The Thirteenth Century: Mentalities And Roles, Ulrike Strasser

Masters Theses

This case study analyzes the lives of three thirteenth-century female saints, Lutgard of Aywiferes, Margaret of Ypres, and Christina Mirabilis, and places them against the broader theoretical frame of quantitative studies on the subject sainthood. The focus of the study is the pursuit of holiness as well as the perception of holiness. Both, pursuit and perception, serve as the point of departure for a discussion of the mentalities and the social realities which the women’s sainthood reflects.

The findings from this study indicate that female saints display numerous commonalities which can be traced back to the saints’ gender and its …

The Case Against A Right To Religion-Based Exemptions, Ellis M. West Jan 1990

The Case Against A Right To Religion-Based Exemptions, Ellis M. West

Political Science Faculty Publications

When, if ever, does the free exercise clause of the first amendment give an individual or organization the right to disobey with impunity a valid law of the state? This question is being discussed with increasing frequency and intensity because of the growing number of persons and groups who are going to the courts and claiming such a right on the grounds that the application of certain laws to them would burden their free exercise of religion. Almost all the individuals and some of the groups who claim such a right do so because the laws to which they object …

An Appetitional Theory Of Sexual Motivation: Its Contemporary Status And Applications In An Approach To Change, Kenneth R. Hardy Oct 1989

An Appetitional Theory Of Sexual Motivation: Its Contemporary Status And Applications In An Approach To Change, Kenneth R. Hardy

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Changes are noted in American society and culture in the last generation since the appetitional theory was first formulated. A current statement of the theory is reviewed, together with the concepts of motivation upon which it is based. A model of change is introduced, based upon central Christian concepts, especially as they are propounded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The change model and the appetitional theory are then applied to the area of human sexuality in an attempt to provide a framework for a program of positive change.

Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster Jan 1989

Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster

Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of Mormonism into Great Britain was met with both success and resistence. The major form of British resistence to the Latter-day Saints was through the press. From the introduction of the Church into Great Britain in 1837 to 1860, numerous anti-Mormon pamphlets were published to discourage people from associating with what was considered to be a strange American sect.

The major themes of a number of these tracts have been analyzed in order to gain a better understanding of how the Mormons were perceived by the British. Some of the major themes included the evil character of Joseph …

Vcu Voice (1988-12-07)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

The Convert As A Social Type: A Critical Assessment Of The Snow-Machalek Conversion Typology As Applied To British Mormon Converts, Joy A. O'Banion

Theses and Dissertations

The study was designed to be a critical assessment of the Snow-Machalek Conversion Typology. Data were collected from Mormon converts in the British Isles, and an attempt was made to apply the typology to these converts. It was assumed that if the typology could be effectively applied to Mormon converts, strong correlations would be found between its dimensions and quantitative measures of conversion. It was also assumed that social integration of converts would play an important part in the conversion process.

The application of the typology proved to be very difficult; however, some dimensions seemed to be more useful than …
