Further Reflections On Teaching Professionalism: A Thank You Note To Jack Sammons, Patrick Emery Longan
Further Reflections On Teaching Professionalism: A Thank You Note To Jack Sammons, Patrick Emery Longan
Mercer Law Review
In 2009, I published Teaching Professionalism in this Law Review to describe the content and methods of Mercer's first-year course on professionalism. Since then, we have made significant changes to the course, and it seems fitting to share some of those developments in the context of a Symposium that honors the scholarship and teaching of Jack Sammons. As I noted in the earlier article, the idea for the course came from Jack before I ever came to Mercer. It is also appropriate to use this occasion for another reason. I can trace the early design of the course, and most …
Mary, Spouse Of Joseph, Model For Married Life, Joseph Arias
Mary, Spouse Of Joseph, Model For Married Life, Joseph Arias
Marian Studies
Broadly, I propose to respond to the following question: What does the unique spousal relationship of Mary and Joseph have to teach families and individuals about the nature of marriage and conjugal love, especially in Christian marriage? While the circumstances of their particular relationship and calling might seem too extraordinary to appear relevant for recent thinking about marriage and family life, I will argue that it is precisely in view of the unique features of their spousal relationship that Mary and Joseph can be appreciated as exemplary for married life, even in modern times.
Mary As The Model Of Faithful Love For Families, Spouses, And Consecrated Persons, Robert L. Fastiggi
Mary As The Model Of Faithful Love For Families, Spouses, And Consecrated Persons, Robert L. Fastiggi
Marian Studies
This essay will explore Mary as the exemplar of holiness for the faithful in the various states of life. In a special way, it will draw upon the insights of St. John Paul II (1920–2005).
Contesting Victorian Beliefs: The Unintended Effects Of Victorian Novels, Christina Barquin
Contesting Victorian Beliefs: The Unintended Effects Of Victorian Novels, Christina Barquin
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Victorian society reproduced polarized gender roles known as the ideology of the separate spheres in order to confine the authority of women. However, as the Victorian Era progressed social norms were gradually contested, and the consequences of the assertion of female authority led to reform. In reinterpreting the Victorian women’s movement, I will interpret the effects of the writers of the late nineteenth century who argued explicitly against proposed changes in the traditional position of middle-class women. I will most closely examine how the late Victorian novels, A Marriage Below Zero by Alan Dale and The Revolt of Man by …
On The Shoulders Of Giants: Happiness And The Good Economy In Catholic Social Teaching, Erin C. Wingerter
On The Shoulders Of Giants: Happiness And The Good Economy In Catholic Social Teaching, Erin C. Wingerter
Honors Theses
The economic discipline, in studying humans, relies on economic philosophers’ theories and understanding of the human person. One of Adam Smith’s most basic tenants was that man is self-interested. This thesis explores the profound implications this has had on those who study economics and what research in behavioral economics implies about its effect on life satisfaction. Catholic Social Teaching is the Roman Catholic Church’s collection of criticisms for practicing the neo-scholastic virtue ethic in social life. If self-interest is emphasized above man’s social nature, which was Smith’s second tenant, economics ignores a non-trivial portion of man’s motivation. Because irrational behaviors …
Complexity Of People's Attitudes Towards Abortion, Lindsey K. Butler
Complexity Of People's Attitudes Towards Abortion, Lindsey K. Butler
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the United States, and in Arkansas specifically, unintended and unplanned pregnancies are a significant public health problem. Induced abortion is a potential outcome of any pregnancy, especially unintended pregnancy. Approximately 43% of unintended pregnancies will be terminated via self-induced abortion (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013). However, abortion remains a salient, but contentious, public health issue in the United States. State and federal governments continue to pass legislation restricting access to safe, legal abortion suggesting that public opinion supports more restrictive policies. Research examining abortion attitudes typically utilize dichotomous, Prochoice versus Prolife, outcomes. Research assessing the extent …

The Contemporary Context Of Milton's Typology: Biblical Exegesis And Literature In The Seventeenth Century, Everett T. Wade
The Contemporary Context Of Milton's Typology: Biblical Exegesis And Literature In The Seventeenth Century, Everett T. Wade
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Literary scholars have recently shown renewed interest in John Milton’s unconventional religious and political thought. Milton was at odds with the dominant Protestant theology of his day. He believed that humans had free will, thus rejecting the central Calvinist doctrine that God predestined men for salvation or damnation. He also rejected the doctrine of the Trinity, claiming that Christ was not equal with God the Father, but rather a subordinate being. These departures from Protestant thought have considerable impact upon Milton’s major poems, Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes. While scholars have explored the role of Milton’s heretical thought, …
Prudence And Executive Control: An Analysis Of The Decision-Making Processes Of The Christian And The Modern Man, Ryan Frazier
Prudence And Executive Control: An Analysis Of The Decision-Making Processes Of The Christian And The Modern Man, Ryan Frazier
Spring 2015, Faith and Science
Scientific research and Christian philosophy often appear to be at odds. These different perspectives sometimes offer different answers to the same question. In the light of these perspectives, however, we can gain a greater understanding of the human experience. Executive control, or how a person decides to do something, is unable to account for the greater question of why. St. Thomas Aquinas¹ explanation of prudence provides reasonable evidence in favor of this perspective. In order to understand the Christian intellectual virtue of prudence, a mastery of the classical, Thomistic account is required. Despite the gaps between science and religious thought, …

Convergent Friends: The Emergence Of Postmodern Quakerism, C. Wess Daniels
Convergent Friends: The Emergence Of Postmodern Quakerism, C. Wess Daniels
Quaker Studies
Postmodernism is ushering in radical change for the Church. Some theologians argue that this change, especially given the discontinuities between modernism and postmodernism, affords new opportunities. Because of these changes there is a decline in many Christian traditions in the West, but there is also a renaissance of ' emerging churches'. The same can be said for Quakers who are experiencing a renaissance of their own. 'Convergent Friends' are a decentralized, international, body of Quakers seeking to renew their tradition through a growing awareness of the need to interact with culture missionally. Their origins and interactions are unique to Convergence …

Learning With Digital Technologies: Privileging Persons Over Machines, Mary E. Hess
Learning With Digital Technologies: Privileging Persons Over Machines, Mary E. Hess
Faculty Publications
Learning with digital technologies, at least when framed by moral commitments, requires lifting up specific epistemological frames, beginning with a conviction that learning involves human persons in interdependent communities who are involved in a shared search for truth. Such a conviction necessitates moving from teaching-centered to learning-centered pedagogies, and from explicit content to shaping tacit forms of knowing. Digital technologies can prove highly beneficial when used within those constraints.
Catholic Health Care And The Affordable Care Act: A Matter Of Social Justice, Mary Mcdonough
Catholic Health Care And The Affordable Care Act: A Matter Of Social Justice, Mary Mcdonough
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
With over a billion members, the Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination in the world. It also manages twenty six percent of all health facilities worldwide.' In the U.S., where one in six patients is treated at a Catholic hospital, the Catholic health care network is the largest group of nonprofit health care providers in the country. With more than 600 hospitals and 1,400 long-term care and other health related facilities, Catholic health care has been a powerful presence in the U.S. for a long time. The Sisters of Charity were the first religious community to staff a hospital …
The End Of The Natural Law: Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Christological Ethics., Jordan J. Ballor
The End Of The Natural Law: Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Christological Ethics., Jordan J. Ballor
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) has often been understood as articulating an occasionalistic, divine-command theory of ethics. In this regard, he is often seen as aligned with Karl Barth (1886-1968). This study challenges this view by demonstrating that Bonhoeffer’s own ethical project was aimed at resuscitating and reviving a distinctively Protestant form of natural-law thinking. Bonhoeffer’s approach was characterized by an emphasis on the origin, formation, and goal of natural mandates in, by, and toward Jesus Christ. Bonhoeffer’s early teaching concerning orders of preservation and laws of life was developed into a mature doctrine of divine mandates in his Ethics, which are …
Proof Of Heaven?: Controversy Over Near-Death Experiences In American Christianity, Joel Sanford
Proof Of Heaven?: Controversy Over Near-Death Experiences In American Christianity, Joel Sanford
The Hilltop Review
Testimonies claiming firsthand experience of Life after Death have been circulating in many cultures since antiquity. Among these experiences are those occurring at, near, or beyond the point of death or apparent death. Testimonies of this kind of experience, now widely referred to as a Near-death Experience (NDE), were popularized by Raymond Moody's publication of Life after Life in 1975. In the last 10 years, it seems there has been a growing American public interest in these experiences, resulting in a slew of New York Times best-sellers. With such provocative titles as Proof of Heaven and Heaven is for Real …

Religious Discourse And Interdisciplinarity In Sport Studies, Zachary T. Smith
Religious Discourse And Interdisciplinarity In Sport Studies, Zachary T. Smith
The Hilltop Review
Religious and theological explorations of leisure have remained few and far between, as religious studies perceive sport and game related studies as trivial, and as leisure theorists find social scientific methods more compelling. And yet, religious traditions and thinkers have been offering accounts and ethics of leisure activities for thousands of years, and anthropological evidence suggests the origination of sport and game play arose in the context of religious cult activity (Huizinga, 1949; Guttmann, 2007). Further, contemporary research has indicated that religion plays an important role in structuring the thought and behavior of religious persons towards their leisure (Waller, 2009) …
Augustinianisms And Thomisms (Chapter Nine Of The Cambridge Companion To Political Theology), Eric Gregory, Joseph Clair
Augustinianisms And Thomisms (Chapter Nine Of The Cambridge Companion To Political Theology), Eric Gregory, Joseph Clair
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Excerpt: "The standard linage of Augustine and Aquinas that emerges in twentieth-century textbooks of political philosophy is that of two fundamentally opposed theological approaches to the political. Augustine, in one corner, is the clear-eyed realist, convinced that political society is fallen, mired in the consequences of original sin and the contingent necessity to restrain evil, vice, and sin. Aquinas, in the other corner, is the more cheerful Aristotelian, who emphasizes the inherent goodness and naturalness of political society and its beneficial purposes for human flourishing.' These contrasting visions continue to animate diverse Christian understandings of the limits and possibilities of …

“Fire tends upwards, stone downwards. By their weight they are moved and seek their proper place ... My love is my weight: wherever I go my love is what brings me there” (Augustine, Confessions 13.9). Augustine long ago recognized that affections are an inescapable dimension of human existence. Why, then, have emotions and affections been so largely neglected, even opposed, in political philosophy? In Political Affections, Joshua Hordern, University Lecturer in Christian Ethics at the University of Oxford and …

We Do Not Know How To Love: Observations On Theology, Technology And Disability, Jana Marguerite Bennett
We Do Not Know How To Love: Observations On Theology, Technology And Disability, Jana Marguerite Bennett
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Does technology enable those who are disabled to be fuller members of society, or does it ultimately seek to eradicate disability and so promote a kind of eugenics against those who are disabled? In the late 1990s and early 2000s, literature and debate on this question ran rampant. A common example is that of cochlear implants, which endured much debate at the time within the Deaf community regarding whether they eradicate an impairment— or whether implants actually do away with entire communities of the Deaf and thus displace an important minority culture. Yet, very little is written today on this …
Organizational Ethics For Sponsorship And Governance In Catholic Healthcare, Alex Garvey
Organizational Ethics For Sponsorship And Governance In Catholic Healthcare, Alex Garvey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Catholic healthcare in the U.S. is distinctive in its organizational structure insofar as it typically has Sponsorship as well as Governance oversight, reflecting the Catholic social tradition and organizational ethics to engage both patient care and the public good. Sponsorship deals with the mission and identity of Catholic organizations to ensure that they implement the Catholic social tradition. Governance deals with organizational ethics to ensure that the organization's values (reflecting its mission and identity) influence all aspects of the institution. Because these are intricately connected, the dissertation deals with them in an integrated manner, hence the combined focus upon Sponsorship …
Beyond Biology: Bases For A Child-Centered And Functional Account Of Parenthood, Jacob Kohlhaas
Beyond Biology: Bases For A Child-Centered And Functional Account Of Parenthood, Jacob Kohlhaas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that the presently influential Catholic theological account of parenthood is indebted to an essentialist theory of gender and the system of sexual ethical reasoning it produces. In consideration of the family, Catholicism tends to favor the differentiated gender roles of the father as the primary financial provider and the mother as the primary caregiver. Though such thinking is often justified as natural or traditional, it relies heavily upon a post-Victorian social context. This gender complementarity is often accompanied by an idealization of the autonomous biological-nuclear family. This family is autonomous in granting parents alone direct responsibility for …
A Constructive Account Of Children's Moral Agency Drawing On Thomas Aquinas's Theory Of Emotions, Ann Vinski
A Constructive Account Of Children's Moral Agency Drawing On Thomas Aquinas's Theory Of Emotions, Ann Vinski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation makes the case that children are moral agents engaged with the morality of their communities without being morally accountable as adults. Contemporary Christian theological anthropology holds that children are fully human and in the image of God, and that they are already encountering good and evil in the world. Childhood is viewed as an essential part of human life and as something that perdures throughout a person's existence. Through their emotions, children are able to engage with, make meaning of, and respond to their surroundings, and these early emotional experiences help to shape each person for the whole …
Reimagining Access To Justice In The Poor People’S Courts, Elizabeth L. Macdowell
Reimagining Access To Justice In The Poor People’S Courts, Elizabeth L. Macdowell
Scholarly Works
Access to justice efforts have been focused more on access than justice, due in part to the framing of access to justice issues around the presence or absence of lawyers. This article argues that access to justice scholars and activists should also think about social justice and provides a roadmap for running a legal services program geared toward making court systems more just. The article also further develops the concept of “poor people’s courts,” a term that has been used to describe courts serving large numbers of low-income people without representation. The article argues that access to justice efforts can …
Hobby Lobby, Birth Control And Our Ongoing Cultural Wars: Pleasure And Desire In The Crossfires, Robin West
Hobby Lobby, Birth Control And Our Ongoing Cultural Wars: Pleasure And Desire In The Crossfires, Robin West
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Both sides of the birth control debate agree that birth control artificially prevents or interrupts conception, allowing women to control their own fertility and allowing heterosexual men and women to enjoy unconstrained sexual liberty. However, the decision in Hobby Lobby omitted all discussion of this central function of birth control, and contained no mention of arguments for or against birth control that assume it.
This piece examines and criticizes the two major arguments opposing and supporting birth control on this understanding of its function and core social meaning: first the neo-natural lawyers’ argument against birth control advanced in a papal …
The Relationship Between A Theological Understanding Of Marital Commitment And A Juridical Articulation Of Marital Consent In Sacramental Marriages In The United States, Angela Robb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sacramental marriage is an essential social, public, ecclesial, and theological good, yet its influence in the United States is threatened by a divorce rate comparable to the U.S. population in general, an explosive increase in cohabitation, and a declining marriage rate. The underlying assumption of this dissertation is that commitment and consent, more thoroughly understood and consistently lived, are essential to lifelong, faithful, and life-giving marriage that symbolizes and makes present Christ's indissoluble love for the church. Through an adapted use of Don Browning's fundamental practical theological method, this study begins with practical concerns regarding concrete marital and family practices …
