Theological Foundations For Devotion To The Hearts Of Jesus And Mary According To St. John Eudes (1601-1680), Robert Fastiggi May 2016

Theological Foundations For Devotion To The Hearts Of Jesus And Mary According To St. John Eudes (1601-1680), Robert Fastiggi

Marian Studies

St. John Eudes united devotion to Mary with devotion to her Son, Jesus Christ. For Eudes, the hearts of Jesus and Mary are inseparable. He recognized that the union of their two hearts is the most intimate union that ever existed. The heart of Jesus dwells in his Mother’s heart, forming a perfect union of the two hearts as one mystical heart. Eudes promoted the Feast of the Admirable Heart of Mary and the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in order to express the mystical union of the two hearts.

The Return Of The Prophetic Ministry Of The Western Church Within The Context Of Liberation Theology And The Prophets, Cedric D. Starr May 2016

The Return Of The Prophetic Ministry Of The Western Church Within The Context Of Liberation Theology And The Prophets, Cedric D. Starr

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

While there may still be churches in the West that take up the prophetic call against injustice their voices are the minority. Generally speaking, the prophetic church in Western Christendom is dead. Its prophetic voice has become mute. Its prophetic vision has diminished. Its prophetic call has vanished from the ears of its members. The Western Church has lost its prophetic role in the Global World. The prophets of the West have vanished. However, the prophetic call has been taken up by a new church tradition that rises upward from the ruin of oppression. The Southern Church of the developing …

Understanding Human Sexuality In John Paul Ii’S Theology Of The Body: An Analysis Of The Historical Development Of Doctrine In The Catholic Tradition, John Segun Odeyemi May 2016

Understanding Human Sexuality In John Paul Ii’S Theology Of The Body: An Analysis Of The Historical Development Of Doctrine In The Catholic Tradition, John Segun Odeyemi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The most volatile area of contention in the discourse between a pure secularized world and the Church in contemporary times is located in the area of sexuality, marriage and family life. Modernist and liberal post enlightenment culture accuse the Church to be unchanging, and unreflective of modern ‘personal’ choices in the contested areas of human sexuality. Within the Church, there are voices also who call for ‘developments’ in such areas of doctrine. For over forty years, these conversation has taken on many shades of grey coming to a head with questions of discordancy and same sex unions among other pressing …

"Puritan Hypocrisy" And "Conservative Catholicity" : How Roman Catholic Clergy In The Border States Interpreted The U.S. Civil War., Carl C. Creason May 2016

"Puritan Hypocrisy" And "Conservative Catholicity" : How Roman Catholic Clergy In The Border States Interpreted The U.S. Civil War., Carl C. Creason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes how Roman Catholic clergy in the Border States—Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland—interpreted the United States Civil War. Overall, it argues that prelates and priests from the region viewed the war through a religious lens informed by their Catholic worldview. Influenced by their experiences with anti-Catholicism and nativism as well as the arguments of the Catholic apologist movement, the clergy interpreted the war as a product of the ill-effects of Protestantism in the country. In response, the clergy argued that if more Americans had practiced Catholicism then the war could and would have been avoided. Furthermore, this thesis illustrates …

Rejecting The Ethnic Community In Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, And Scarface, Bryan Mead Apr 2016

Rejecting The Ethnic Community In Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, And Scarface, Bryan Mead

Journal of Religion & Film

Film scholars commonly suggest that the 1930s American movie gangster represented marginalized Italian and Irish-American film-goers, and that these gangsters provided a visual and aural outlet for ethnic audience frustrations with American societal mores. However, while movie gangsters clearly struggle with WASP society, the ethnic gangster’s struggle against his own community deserves further exploration. The main characters in gangster films of the early 1930s repeatedly forge an individualistic identity and, in consequence, separate themselves from their ethnic peers and their family, two major symbols of their communal culture. This rejection of community is also a rejection of the distinctly Italian …

Nietzsche And Heraclitus: Notes On Stars Without An Atmosphere, Niketas Siniossoglou Apr 2016

Nietzsche And Heraclitus: Notes On Stars Without An Atmosphere, Niketas Siniossoglou

Sophia and Philosophia

I awake estranged from everyone. Words have lost their meaning; they sound indifferent and homonymous. The word No appears to mean Yes, or rather: Yes and No are malleable, ephemeral, and transparent. A decades-old or perhaps centuries-old movement of miry clay has resulted in a miscarriage of words. Iinquire whether anyone still holds the resources needed for a direct, sincere affirmation of life—a Yes that is definitively and essentially affirmative—or a No that is definitively and essentially negative—words bursting forth splendour like a crystal. I am told that formulations of this sort are incomprehensible; they are too metaphorical and, …

Theo-Dramatic Ethics: A Balthasarian Approach To Moral Formation, Andrew John Kuzma Apr 2016

Theo-Dramatic Ethics: A Balthasarian Approach To Moral Formation, Andrew John Kuzma

Dissertations (1934 -)

What role does beauty play in our moral formation? What difference does the perception of beauty make to the way we live our lives? In order to answer these questions, I look to the twentieth-century Catholic theologian, Hans Urs von Balthasar. Relatively little has been written about Balthasar’s ethics. He is, perhaps, best known for his retrieval of beauty as a transcendental property of being. Balthasar, though, never set down an extended account of his ethics or moral theology. While he had no explicit ethic, he certainly thought that his theology could be lived. The Theo-Drama, for instance, discusses the …

Can The Church Be A Virtuous Hearer Of Women?, Mary E. Carlson Apr 2016

Can The Church Be A Virtuous Hearer Of Women?, Mary E. Carlson

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

In 1972, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops attempted to address concerns raised by Vatican II regarding the treatment of women in the Church. The plan was to produce a pastoral letter on “The Role of Women in Society and the Church.” Twenty-two years, hundreds of revised pages, and four drafts later, it produced a disappointing fourteen-page pamphlet, Strengthening the Bonds of Peace. Using this pastoral as a case study, Carlson asks, can the Church be a virtuous hearer of women? The question is meant to determine if there is an injustice being done and stems from the virtue …

Special Education As A Moral Mandate In Catholic Schools, Mary E. Carlson Apr 2016

Special Education As A Moral Mandate In Catholic Schools, Mary E. Carlson

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study summarizes the level of services offered to students with special educational needs in Catholic schools and finds that children with disabilities are underserved and that research regarding the extent and types of services offered is insufficient. More importantly, the author examines the practice of Catholic schools’ non-admission of students with special needs using: traditional Catholic Social Teaching, especially the doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas; virtue ethics; the hermeneutic of real, lived experience; and liberation theologies and related liberatory disciplines. Viewed through each of these lenses, current Catholic school practice, in the majority of cases, is unjust. To remain …

Suspicious Of The Filipino Social Virtue Of Fortitude, Monica Jalandoni Nalupta Mar 2016

Suspicious Of The Filipino Social Virtue Of Fortitude, Monica Jalandoni Nalupta

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

This article argues that virtue takes on a particular color or texture in specific social contexts. In the case of the Filipino context, the virtue of fortitude is Thomistic. Second, it will argue that it is necessary to engage in a social-ethical critique of social virtue, arguing that since the Philippine concept of fortitude lacks a crucial link with justice it can be considered deficient. The article is concerned with critiquing the form that virtue has assumed in the Philippines, as well as the abuse of ethical language in discussions of virtue. In Philippine society, the language of virtue is …

Vocation And Work In The Spirit: Understanding Charisms In Relation To Work And Vocation, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen Mar 2016

Vocation And Work In The Spirit: Understanding Charisms In Relation To Work And Vocation, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

One of the unique aspects of Jesuit Ignatian education is the focus on vocation and discernment. Still, students’ misconceptions about vocation are not sufficiently addressed, especially the relation between work and vocation. This paper proposes that Miraslov Volf’s pneumatological understanding of work provides insights that can help dispel misconceptions. Understanding one’s vocation as a charism can help students make more sense of work in today’s context, as well help students understand that work is not simply finding “the right job” that fits their passion and aspiration but also cooperating with and responding to grace in doing the good.

You Have Atomic Bombs, We Have The Martyrdom-Seekers: Ayman Al-Zawahiri’S Narrative Arc Of The Martyr, Tim Huffman Mar 2016

You Have Atomic Bombs, We Have The Martyrdom-Seekers: Ayman Al-Zawahiri’S Narrative Arc Of The Martyr, Tim Huffman

Peace and Conflict Studies

Martyrdom has an undeniable rhetorical dimension, and part of a martyr’s voice is the manner of his or her death. However, martyrdom does not stand alone. It is contextualized and constructed by the voice of ideologues. This project looks at the spoken and written rhetoric of Ayman Al-Zawahiri, leader of al-Qaeda, and seeks to understand his descriptions, attributions, and stories about martyrs and martyrdom. An analysis of 93 statements by Zawahiri was performed to identify his overarching martyr narrative and archetype. Major findings include a taxonomy of martyr attributes and a narrative trajectory of martyrdom. While pro-USA rhetoric constructs al-Qaeda’s …
