Introduction To The Issue, Meghan Clark, Anna F. Rowlands
Introduction To The Issue, Meghan Clark, Anna F. Rowlands
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
This issue of JoVSA is a continuation of the conversations begun in Rome.1 In this issue are theological and practical reflections from Argentina, the Philippines, France/Rome, Ireland, England, and the United States. Throughout the articles, readers will find robust theological reflection, engagement with persons experiencing homelessness, and critical insights on policies by both government and church agencies. These essays invite all of us to consider more deeply the Catholic social teaching tradition and lived realities of people experiencing homelessness.
Dialogical Encounter Between Young Black Men And The Police In Dougherty County: Towards A More Effective Community Trust, Joshua Nelson
Dialogical Encounter Between Young Black Men And The Police In Dougherty County: Towards A More Effective Community Trust, Joshua Nelson
Adventist Human-Subject Researchers Association
Explore the topic of policing and black men in America. The focus of this study was to develop, test and employ a training intervention model that facilitated a community of trust between law enforcement officers and Black American youth. By administering a pre and post survey the data revealed whether perceptions changed between either side.
Spiritual Struggle And Gregory Of Nyssa’S Theory Of Perpetual Ascent: An Orthodox Christian Virtue Ethic, Stephen M. Meawad
Spiritual Struggle And Gregory Of Nyssa’S Theory Of Perpetual Ascent: An Orthodox Christian Virtue Ethic, Stephen M. Meawad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project utilizes virtue ethics as an especially suitable lens by which to develop an Orthodox Christian ethical model generally. At the same time, virtue ethics carries with it some complexities that are in turn mitigated by the particulars of this Orthodox model—spiritual struggle and perpetual progress, or epektasis. Spiritual struggle in this project, which ultimately shifts the emphasis from virtue’s acquisition to its pursuit, is defined as the exertion of effort in all conceivable dimensions—physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, and spiritual—with intent to attain a semblance of, knowledge of, and intimacy with Jesus Christ in community, for God …

The Peacemakers: Navigating The Intersection Of Biblical Justice And Contemporary Policing, Nathan Brown
The Peacemakers: Navigating The Intersection Of Biblical Justice And Contemporary Policing, Nathan Brown
Senior Honors Theses
For Christians seeking to enter the field of policing, the question of justice is answered by two separate sources. Conceptions of justice are presented by both the contemporary justice system and the Bible. The history and current state of American policing reveal a sense of justice that is concerned with fighting crime and defending the rights of the vulnerable. There are, however, inherent limitations when operating within a system made by man. Biblical justice goes further by prioritizing restoration and redeemed relationships within its conception of justice. Reconciling these two perspectives equips Christian police officers with a framework with which …
Introduction To Journal Of Moral Theology V.8 Special Issue #1, James F. Keenan, Matthew J. Gaudet
Introduction To Journal Of Moral Theology V.8 Special Issue #1, James F. Keenan, Matthew J. Gaudet
General Engineering
The overarching goal of this volume is to attend to the reality of contingency today in light of pertinent Catholic teachings on education, social structures, and economic justice. The essays in this volume will proceed in three parts. Part I is a single essay offered by Keenan that situates the issue of contingency within the broader field of university ethics. The task of Part II is to examine the intricate details and facets of the main subject. To this end, the five authors in this section each offer a snapshot of one of the most glaring concerns regarding contingency today …
Toward An Inclusive Faculty Community, Matthew J. Gaudet
Toward An Inclusive Faculty Community, Matthew J. Gaudet
General Engineering
Today nearly three quarters of all college professors work off of the tenure-track, and thus exist in a university structure that was not constructed with them in mind, does not take them seriously, and, ultimately, offers them little more than the most tenuous and temporary of connections. This is hardly the model of a Christian community that the Catholic university aspires to be. Thus, this paper first seeks to unpack the historical legacy of the past four decades of contingent faculty growth, and then, offers a response by drawing upon Catholic Social Teaching and Christian scripture to inform a new …
Now, I'M Liberal, But To A Degree: An Essay On Debating Religious Liberty And Discrimination, Francis J. Beckwith
Now, I'M Liberal, But To A Degree: An Essay On Debating Religious Liberty And Discrimination, Francis J. Beckwith
Cleveland State Law Review
This essay is a critical analysis of the book authored by John Corvino, Sherif Girgis, and Ryan T. Anderson, Debating Religious Liberty and Discrimination. The book offers two contrary views on how best to think about some of the conflicts that have arisen over religious liberty and anti-discrimination laws, e.g., Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Comm’n, 138 S. Ct. 1719 (2018). One position is defended by Corvino, and the other by Girgis and Anderson. After a brief discussion of the differing views of religious liberty throughout American history (including the American founding), this essay summarizes each …
The Enigma Of Social Harm And The Barrier Of Liberalism: Why Zemiology Needs A Theory Of The Good, Tw Raymen
The Enigma Of Social Harm And The Barrier Of Liberalism: Why Zemiology Needs A Theory Of The Good, Tw Raymen
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Social harm is one of the most potentially potent and transformative concepts currently available to the social sciences. However, scholars have struggled to define social harm, puzzled by enigmatic questions and tensions around the issue of how to establish clear conceptual parameters which take advantage of social harm’s broader critical focus, whilst preventing the concept from becoming so nebulous that it loses all utility. This article suggests that the enigma of social harm is not simply a problem of having yet to find an adequate definition and set of conceptual parameters. Rather, the uncertainty that surrounds social harm and the …
Conclaves In The Modern Papacy: Factors That Influence The Elections Of Popes (1846-Present), Jair Peltier
Conclaves In The Modern Papacy: Factors That Influence The Elections Of Popes (1846-Present), Jair Peltier
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
This research paper seeks to identify and explain external and internal factors, including international conflict, ecclesiastical norms, and the actions, styles, and reputations of popes in their life times, in the elections of popes in the Roman Catholic Church from 1846 to 2013.
Using historical context is important in identifying the international, social, and political climate that the conclaves were held in. Analyzing the papacies of the individual popes is another important aspect of this research. One pontificate begins when another ends. It would therefore be unproductive to disregard the successes and shortcomings of the popes after their elections. The …
1913 - The Missions And Missionaries Of California, Vol. Iii, Upper California, Part Ii, General History, Zephyrin Engelhardt
Franciscan Publications
Volume III, Section I of Engelhardt's series on California missions covers largely the period of 1812 through 1830 addressing the challenges and difficulties facing the missionaries including the scarcity of resources and labor. He described the invasion of Monterey and other ports in Upper California by Hipólte Bouchard in 1818. Section II covers the period of 1830 through 1836 and the secularization of the missions by the Mexican government during which time the missionaries held their posts until either death or the government relieved them of the responsibility of protecting the neophytes against "white rapacity" and the destruction of the …

A Bucket Half Empty: A Critique Of The Notion Of Sustainable Development As A Paradigm For Environmental Sustainability, Abundio R. Babor
A Bucket Half Empty: A Critique Of The Notion Of Sustainable Development As A Paradigm For Environmental Sustainability, Abundio R. Babor
Landas
Addressing the critical degradation of the global biosphere and ecosystems driven by relentless economic development, this paper offers a vital critique of modern ecological policies. While frameworks like those from the 1992 Earth Summit aimed to reconcile economic growth with environmental conservation and resource equity, Babor argues that these strategies remain fundamentally inadequate for protecting the planet's non- renewable assets. Ultimately, the paper contends that the unbridled exploitation of finite resources inherently undermines the earth's capacity for regeneration, challenging the long-term viability of current sustainable development paradigms.

Exercising Obedience: John Cassian And The Creation Of Early Monastic Subjectivity, Joshua Daniel Schachterle
Exercising Obedience: John Cassian And The Creation Of Early Monastic Subjectivity, Joshua Daniel Schachterle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
John Cassian (360-435 CE) started his monastic career in Bethlehem. He later traveled to the Egyptian desert, living there as a monk, meeting the venerated Desert Fathers, and learning from them for about fifteen years. Much later, he would go to the region of Gaul to help establish a monastery there by writing monastic manuals, the Institutes and the Conferences. These seminal writings represent the first known attempt to bring the idealized monastic traditions from Egypt, long understood to be the cradle of monasticism, to the West.
In his Institutes, Cassian comments that "a monk ought by all …

John And June Mary Makdisi: An Intellectual And Moral Journey, Siegfried Wiessner, Roza Pati
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
John and June Mary Makdisi have been our friends and treasured colleagues for many a year. It is with exceptional delight that we present these lines and this volume of intellectual contributions of friends, in the global university tradition of an hommage, a Festschrift celebrating their professional and personal contributions to our St. Thomas Law family on the occasion of their retirement. This Festschrift is also a vessel of admiration, respect, gratitude, warm wishes and prayers for God's grace and blessings for the magic of their new journey.

John The Theologian: Towards Integrating Law And Religion, Gordon Butler
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
Every dean leaves an impact on the law school they serve and its faculty. St. Thomas Law Dean Makdisi supported and encouraged Professor Siegfried Wiessner's effort in creating an LL.M. program in Intercultural Human Rights. While others will laud his many accomplishments as dean in the J.D. program, his impact on the religious heritage and Catholic mission of St. Thomas Law was greatest in the LL.M. program.
The Transformation Of Marriage As A State Institution, John Makdisi, June Mary Zekan Makdisi
The Transformation Of Marriage As A State Institution, John Makdisi, June Mary Zekan Makdisi
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
The first section of this essay explores why the good of children requires the institution of marriage to promote the procreation of children by the act of physical-spiritual love between a man and a woman. The second section explores why the good of children requires the institution of marriage to promote the upbringing of children by the lasting, exclusive, and faithful commitment of the couple. The third section explains why Obergefell's removal of the requirement of a legal union between a man and a woman as an essential aspect of marriage not only destroys the function of the marriage institution …

"There He Built An Altar To The Lord" (Gen 12:8) City And Altar Building In Genesis, Arie C. Leder
"There He Built An Altar To The Lord" (Gen 12:8) City And Altar Building In Genesis, Arie C. Leder
CTS Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
This essay examines Genesis' depiction of the contrast between patriarchal altar-building (בנה, Gen 12:7, 8; 13:18; 22:9; 26:25; 35:7; cf. 8:20) and pre-patriarchal city-building (בנה, Gen 4:17; 10:11; 11:4). The patriarchal building is qualitatively different because the altars are built in the place where, and after, YHWH appears to the patriarch, in the context of a word of blessing evocative of Genesis 12:1-3.It is suggested that the patriarchal altars of Genesis anticipated the place YHWH would choose for his name to dwell.
