The Business Of Double-Effect: The Ethics Of Bankruptcy Protection And The Principle Of Double-Effect, Henry S. Kuo
The Business Of Double-Effect: The Ethics Of Bankruptcy Protection And The Principle Of Double-Effect, Henry S. Kuo
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, most legacy airlines filed for bankruptcy protection as a way to cut costs drastically, with the exception of American Airlines. This article applies the Principle of Double-Effect to the act of filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for reasons of management strategy, in particular, cost-cutting. It argues that the Principle can be a useful tool for discerning the ethicality of the action, and demonstrates the usefulness by proposing three double-effect criteria that, when fulfilled, argues for the ethical justifiability the action in question.
Amoris Laetitia And Admission Of Divorced And Remarried Catholics To The Sacraments, Patrick D. Boyoc
Amoris Laetitia And Admission Of Divorced And Remarried Catholics To The Sacraments, Patrick D. Boyoc
Loyola Papers
The article looks into Pope Francis’ exhortation on the family and its stand on the admission to the sacraments of divorced and remarried Catholics. While demonstrating the controversial document’s fidelity to tradition, the author also highlights its unique contributions, especially in integrating other moral principles—also within the tradition—in the process of discernment of the situation of the persons involved.

Love Stronger Than Death: A Theological Response To Suicide In Depression, Maria Cecilia C. Tuble
Love Stronger Than Death: A Theological Response To Suicide In Depression, Maria Cecilia C. Tuble
Loyola Papers
The article offers a theological-anthropological response to suicide in the context of depression. It explores the psychopathology of suicide, drawing from research from neuroscience and psychology, and then considers three themes derived from the Imago Dei: Goodness, Communion, and Hope. It concludes that goodness, communion, and hope provide a healing path for those suffering suicidal depression.
Amoris Laetitia: Its Teachings And Magisterial Authority, Archie R. Magarao
Amoris Laetitia: Its Teachings And Magisterial Authority, Archie R. Magarao
Loyola Papers
The article argues that Amoris Laetitia is an example of the authentic magisterium of the Roman Pontiff befitting the response of a religious submission of the mind and will to the ordinary exercise of the Pope’s supreme teaching authority, even apart from a solemn ex cathedra judgment. Although it does not enjoy infallibility, it remains an authoritative teaching that the Pope offers as he exercises his office as Universal Pastor of the Church.
Pope Francis And The Culture Of Encounter, Angeli Francis S. Rivera
Pope Francis And The Culture Of Encounter, Angeli Francis S. Rivera
Loyola Papers
This paper investigates the development of Pope Francis’ “culture of encounter” as shaped by the people he has met throughout his life. These encounters form a “polyhedron” where diverse influences converge into a unified vision. The study explains that the culture of encounter responds to a weakening political and moral compass in contemporary society. It is concretized in four principles articulated in Evangelii Gaudium: time is greater than space, unity prevails over conflict, realities are more important than ideas, and the whole is greater than its parts. These principles provide a framework for dialogue, solidarity, and engagement. The paper highlights …

The Human Person, Subject Of Religious Freedom: Arguments In Christianity, Arguments In Islam, Felix Körner
The Human Person, Subject Of Religious Freedom: Arguments In Christianity, Arguments In Islam, Felix Körner
Landas
This article examines the theological foundations of religious freedom within Christianity and Islam, contextualized by the Bangsamoro Organic Law. Tracing Roman Catholicism's historical paradigm shift culminating in the Second Vatican Council's Dignitatis Humanae, the author analyzes how the concepts of "faith"—defined as a free, relational response of love—and the "human person"—characterized by dignity, relation, conscience, and history—theologically justify religious liberty. The study explores parallel justifications within Islam, examining Qur'anic perspectives on natural law, diversity, and human dignity. Finally, it addresses practical contemporary challenges in Christian-Muslim relations, emphasizing education and soft power over coercion.
Understanding The Church Position On Adoption By Same-Sex Couples, Ana Maria Q. Faustino
Understanding The Church Position On Adoption By Same-Sex Couples, Ana Maria Q. Faustino
Landas
This paper explains why the Church is not in favor of allowing same-sex partners to adopt a child. According to Church teaching, it is in the best interests of the child that she or he be born and raised within a natural family founded on the marriage of husband and wife. The lack of sexual complementarity in same-sex couples can undermine the development of an adopted child. Although there are studies claiming that children raised by same-sex couples fare just as well as those raised by a husband and wife, the findings are inconclusive and even disputed. Moreover, Faustino argues …

Fever As Alchemical Fire In The Opus Of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Artist Of The Nigredo, Stephanie Crank
Fever As Alchemical Fire In The Opus Of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Artist Of The Nigredo, Stephanie Crank
Theses & ETDs
Brain fever is a recurring event in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novels. It plays a major role in bringing his characters face to face with their buried inner conflicts, especially where an external attitude disguises or compensates for a deeper semi-conscious or unconscious truth which has been rejected. The occurrence of fever signals the insistent onset of a transformational process which will not abate until all self-deception has been burned away, bringing the light of consciousness to repressed and suppressed content and revealing a character’s essential personality. A close analysis of fever as a symptom of the psycho-physiological imperative of transformation in …
Church And State And Child Endangerment, Raymond C. O'Brien
Church And State And Child Endangerment, Raymond C. O'Brien

As media in the United States revealed the number of minors sexually abused by clergy, the gravity of the offenses, and the inability to prosecute the offenders, a second offense was revealed. Gradually it was illustrated that bishops and their diocesan administrators knew of credible sexual crimes against children committed by clergy and they responded by protecting offenders, ignoring victims, and knowingly reassigning credibly accused clergy to other placements where they could endanger additional minors. In response to these developments the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops published policies to protect children, enacted norms to be followed in each diocese, …
Improving Spiritual Care By Chaplains For Service Members Who Witness Death, Beth M. Echols
Improving Spiritual Care By Chaplains For Service Members Who Witness Death, Beth M. Echols
Doctor of Ministry Doctoral Projects
This research studied the experience of military and Veteran Affairs chaplains who work with a spectrum of military veterans. The purpose was to better understand how chaplain training prepared or failed to equip spiritual care providers to minister to service members during and/or after the initial experience that they identified as traumatic.
The researcher asked nine open-ended questions to encourage and facilitate reflective responses. After grouping responses with similar answers, the researcher coded the chaplains’ responses to determine themes that would describe and somehow encompass the phenomenon of serving as a chaplain in a war theater. Throughout the study, the …
The Past, Present, And Future Of Christian Adr, Ronald J. Colombo
The Past, Present, And Future Of Christian Adr, Ronald J. Colombo
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Many religious traditions recommend (if not require) that their adherents bring some if not all of their disputes with co-adherents before a religious tribunal for resolution. The Christian religious tradition is no exception. That said, the dramatic history of the Church in the West, from that of a persecuted Jewish sect, to the official state religion of Imperial Rome, to an international authority competing with that of local monarchs, to its modern status of merely tolerated, has yielded a variety of evolving perspectives on the question of intra-faith dispute resolution within Christianity. This article examines that question and the historical …
‘The Oracular Tale’ And The Oracles Of The Greeks: Storytelling, Conjecture, And Oracular Ambiguity In Herodotus’ Histories And Its Historical And Cultural Context, Daniel J. Crosby
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
In this dissertation, I investigate the belief in the power of prophecy in ancient Greece. More specifically, I study how the ancient Greeks used oracles, like those of the famous oracle at Delphi, to make their past, present, and future knowable. I analyze the stories about oracles from Herodotus’ Histories as well as Thucydides and the corpus of Greek inscriptions using a theory of storytelling called narratology. With this theory, I show that all stories about oracles are expressions of the same basic plot whether a narrator employs all of its typical episodes or leaves some of them implied. Further, …

Phenomenal Women: Experiences Of Women In Executive Catholic Educational Leadership In The United States, Fatima Ann Samson Nicdao
Phenomenal Women: Experiences Of Women In Executive Catholic Educational Leadership In The United States, Fatima Ann Samson Nicdao
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Though women are overrepresented in education as classroom teachers, they continue to be underrepresented in decision-making leadership positions in education administration (Bynum, 2016; Coleman, 2003; Fuller, 2013; Grogan & Shakeshaft, 2011; Moorosi, 2018; Robinson et al., 2017; Torrance et al., 2017). The cause of the low representation of women in decision making has been attributed to a wide range of reasons spanning from ingrained patriarchal mindsets, societal biases, lack of professional networks, misconceptions of women in leadership, and the lack of leadership opportunities.
Other causes of gender inequality in educational leadership are linked to a lack of a systematic mentorship …

Should We Be Just, Loving Or Both? Understanding The Relationship Of Justice And Love, Edwin B. Odulio
Should We Be Just, Loving Or Both? Understanding The Relationship Of Justice And Love, Edwin B. Odulio
Theology Department Faculty Publications
In this article, I argue that the relationship of justice and love can be seen and understood through the prophets’ message in the Old Testament and in Jesus’ manifestation and proclamation of the Kingdom of God. This relationship is continuously affirmed by the Church, in particular, through its Catholic social teachings. The love for God and God’s people is the essence of the human beings’ commitment to work for justice while living out justice is the concrete manifestation of humanity’s response to their loving relationship with God and one another.
The Hope And History Debate In Fundamental Theology, David Patrick Collits
The Hope And History Debate In Fundamental Theology, David Patrick Collits
Theses
The hope and history debate in twentieth century Catholic theology concerned to what extent the object(s) of eschatological hope could be realised within history. Its context was the ‘secularisation of Christian eschatology’. On the one hand, Joseph Ratzinger, who was indebted to the philosophical work of Josef Pieper, considered hope’s object to belong to the realm of gift. He was sceptical of the extent to which hope could be manufactured by human means within history. On the other, Edward Schillebeeckx, Johann Baptist Metz and Gustavo Gutiérrez presented theologies of futurity, including political theology and liberation theology, in which the realisation …

Balancing Burdens In Religious Freedom Claims, T. J. Denley
Balancing Burdens In Religious Freedom Claims, T. J. Denley
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the expansion of religious freedom claims under the First Amendment and related laws, arguing that recent developments risk creating unequal treatment and burdening marginalized groups. It critiques the shift in doctrine that favors conservative Judeo-Christian morality, potentially undermining antidiscrimination protections and creating "theocratic zones of control." The analysis emphasizes the need to balance religious freedom with the rights of third parties and equality-implicating rights.
