Vincent De Paul And Catechetical Renewal, Grace Dorr D.C.
Vincent De Paul And Catechetical Renewal, Grace Dorr D.C.
Vincentian Studies
Vatican II divided Catholics over whether to use its catechism and approach or whether to use the Council of Trent’s. People wondered about how to translate the faith into today’s language. Vincent de Paul faced a similar problem during the Counter-Reformation as he instructed the clergy and the poor, both of whom were often woefully undereducated about the faith. Millions of copies of his two catechisms were distributed, and he worked as a catechist himself. He also instructed his priests, the Daughters of Charity, and members of the Confraternities of Charity as catechists. He emphasized using language that was easy …

The Role Of Judgment In The Epistemologies Of Immanuel Kant & Bernard Lonergan: A Critical Study, Barrett Horne
The Role Of Judgment In The Epistemologies Of Immanuel Kant & Bernard Lonergan: A Critical Study, Barrett Horne
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A critical explication and comparison of the notion of judgment in the epistemologies of Immanuel Kant and Bernard J. F. Lonergan is developed with a view to exploring the nature and limits of human knowing. The study reveals that Kant is forced to ground his epistemology in immediate intuition and rigid, a priori concepts because he fails to distinguish between mere animal extroversion and rational inquiry, and because he overlooks the role of the virtually unconditioned. He therefore relegates to judgment a merely mechanical function limited in its scope exclusively to empirical employment. He is furthermore forced (because of his …

A Theological Method For Legal Education, Raymond C. O'Brien
A Theological Method For Legal Education, Raymond C. O'Brien
Scholarly Articles
Is it possible to engraft theology' into legal education? Does the law school seeking to inculcate any particular theology into its curriculum jeopardize the fabric of legal education? Are theology and law irretrievably broken, one to speak only of the things of God and the other to speak of Caesar? Finally, if there is to be interaction between law and theology within the context of legal education, is there a methodology that can offer significant and fruitful dialogue? This is the real issue.

The Gentleman In Professional Ethics, Thomas L. Shaffer
The Gentleman In Professional Ethics, Thomas L. Shaffer
Journal Articles
The character of the “gentlemen” has served as a basis for ethics in professionalism. The purpose of this article is to describe the gentleman’s ethics, to explain its implications on the legal profession, to test its adequacy, and to argue that the gentleman’s ethic veered wrong by moving away from its religious tradition. In particular, the author analyzes its adequacy by engaging in four tests including (1) whether the gentleman’s ethic survives conceptions of class and professionalism; (2) whether it provides the skills needed for dealing with power and institutions; (3) whether it takes into account the “tragic nature of …
