‘Supernatural, Or At Least Romantic': The Ancient Mariner And Parody, Steven Jones Aug 1999

‘Supernatural, Or At Least Romantic': The Ancient Mariner And Parody, Steven Jones

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This essay looks through the lens of parody at one of Coleridge's most characteristically "romantic" works, his famous ballad of the supernatural, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Along with the other so-called "Mystery Poems"—"Christabel" and "Kubla Khan"—this is among his most significant generic contributions to the developing idea of Romanticism, the kind of work that comes through a kind of synecdoche to stand for the whole movement as it was conceived.

Reconstructing Atticus Finch, Steven Lubet May 1999

Reconstructing Atticus Finch, Steven Lubet

Michigan Law Review

Atticus Finch. No real-life lawyer has done more for the self-image or public perception of the legal profession than the hero of Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. For nearly four decades, the name of Atticus Finch has been invoked to defend and inspire lawyers, to rebut lawyer jokes, and to justify (and fine-tune) the adversary system. Lawyers are greedy. What about Atticus Finch? Lawyers only serve the rich. Not Atticus Finch. Professionalism is a lost ideal. Remember Atticus Finch. In the unreconstructed Maycomb, Alabama of the 1930s, Atticus was willing to risk his social standing, professional reputation, and …

Constitutional Legitimacy, The Principle Of Free Speech, And The Politics Of Identity, David A. J. Richards Jan 1999

Constitutional Legitimacy, The Principle Of Free Speech, And The Politics Of Identity, David A. J. Richards

Faculty Articles

The theory of free speech is a natural subject of interdisciplinary and comparative study for both political philosophers and lawyers. First, it has a highly abstract component, in which issues of general normative philosophy are at stake (for example, competing arguments of utilitarian or perfectionist teleological consequentialism versus those of deontological natural rights); second, it has an historical and contextual component, in which free speech is embedded in an historically evolving tradition of constitutional thought, including both political and legal arguments made over time about its proper meaning. The proper balance between these two components (political theory and interpretive history) …

Christian Family As Church? Inquiry, Analysis, And Pastoral Implications, Ennio Pasquale Mastroianni Jan 1999

The purpose of this dissertation is to determine in what sense the Christian family can be called Church: not at all, analogically, and/or univocally. Integral to the dissertation is that the hierarchical magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church has developed significantly the ecclesial nature of the Christian family during the past three decades. During the Second Vatican Council the council fathers developed a seed text in which they use the term "domestic Church" to connote this ecclesial dimension of Christian marriage and the family which derives from it.

The core of this study is two-fold: first, to determine the meaning, …
