The Shadow Side Of The Vincentian Mission, John Prager C.M. Oct 1995

The Shadow Side Of The Vincentian Mission, John Prager C.M.

Vincentian Studies

John Prager reflects on the elements of the missionary vocation as well as its challenges, or as he calls it, “the shadow side of the mission.” To be a missionary is to “accompany Jesus into the world of the poor.” It requires insertion (the assumption of the poor’s lifestyle and the discarding of security), inculturation (entering into and learning from the worldview of the poor), and new evangelization (cooperating with God’s love in many ways, especially ministering with the perspective of the poor in mind). Vulnerability, insecurity, doubts, confusion, fear, anger, and loneliness are all part of the shadow side …

The Missiological Significance Of The Doctrine Of Justification In The Lutheran Confessions, Klaus Schulz May 1994

The Missiological Significance Of The Doctrine Of Justification In The Lutheran Confessions, Klaus Schulz

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Generally the Lutheran Confessions are understood in the traditional sense as the normative sources for Lutheran doctrine; in addition, they are also documents which offer valuable missiological insights. To support the latter observation the following study attempts to read the Lutheran Confessions with a heightened missiological perspective. Such a reading takes up the interests and concerns frequently raised by Lutheran theologians who in light of the increasing changes in mission see the theological integrity of Lutheran mission endangered. Consequently, they plea for a return to the Book of Concord from which guiding principles for Lutheran mission m Confessions, though, should …

Saving Souls And Securing The Socioeconomic Status Quo: A Consideration Of Billy Sunday And The Pacific Garden Mission, Jonathan R. Moore '92 Jan 1992

Saving Souls And Securing The Socioeconomic Status Quo: A Consideration Of Billy Sunday And The Pacific Garden Mission, Jonathan R. Moore '92

Honors Projects, History

With these words, professional baseball player-turned-evangelist Billy Sunday placed himself outside the mainstream of middle-class America's growing urban culture. However, as historian Laurence Moore notes, "outsiderhood is a characteristic way of inventing one's Americanness." Indeed, as Sunday's fiery blend of evangelism and vaudeville antics reached into the furthest recesses of the nation's religious consciousness, the revivalist found himself at the forefront of the early twentieth century fundamentalist movement. Emerging from his conversion at Chicago's Pacific Garden Mission, Sunday attained the pinnacle of his success between 1908 and 1920. Little interested in developing a comprehensive theology, both Sunday and Pacific Garden …

The Educational Needs Of The Adult Layperson Concerning The Mission Of God_Research Towards Writing An Introductory Adult Mission Education Course, Stephen Gaulke

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

What are the educational needs of an adult layperson concerning world mission? What ought an introductory adult mission education study course attempt to teach? This thesis endeavors to answer the question in three chapters.
