Evaluating An Oral Draft Of Luke 8:4-15 In Uduk, Jeremy N. Harrison
Evaluating An Oral Draft Of Luke 8:4-15 In Uduk, Jeremy N. Harrison
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This doctor of ministry thesis presents the findings of a project in which I led a group of immigrants from South Sudan through the process of generating and evaluating an oral draft of Luke 8:4-15 in Uduk. The aim of this project was to provide a substantive field test of an oral translation methodology conducted among immigrants living in the United States who speak a language that lacks a translation of the entire Bible. The project involved facilitating basic translation training and conducting an oral drafting process with a team of three Uduk speakers. This project also involved evaluating the …
Creating An Immersive And Entertaining Game For Raising Internet Privacy Awareness, April Suknot
Creating An Immersive And Entertaining Game For Raising Internet Privacy Awareness, April Suknot
Computer Science ETDs
The continuous evolution in the pervasiveness and connectedness of technology is a subject of growing concern. Databases, smartphones, tablets, laptops, wearables are all united through a single global network—the Internet. This growth has resulted in social networks and other data-collecting applications becoming a major part of life for many people. To address emerging threats and growing concerns, our goal is to present internet users with a simulation that helps them consider the actions that they take when online. To do so, we have created a narrative game, Immaculacy, which is intended to raise awareness in common privacy issues that many …

He remembers the fateful day as if it were yesterday. It was April 1970, and he had arrived at work in Huntsville, Ala., as usual. Then, he heard the words that sent chills up his spine as someone ran into the room and exclaimed, “Hey! They’re in trouble!”

Short-Term Missions -- Long-Term Change, Christopher Ellis
Short-Term Missions -- Long-Term Change, Christopher Ellis
Doctor of Ministry
The amount of participants sent yearly on short-term missions (STMs) and the cost to send teams is astounding. Unfortunately, the change of participants that occurs on these trips is often overstated, especially if one is to believe existing data that counters the STM mantra that “my trip changed my life.”
Section 1 examines the current status of STMs, seeking to place them in their global context. It then answers the question of why many STM trips don’t lead to participant change.
Section 2 examines the solutions to the current problem, including books, dissertations, conferences, and other media. I then state …

From Missional Worship To Missional Living And Back Again, Chris Schoon Thd
Symposium on Worship Archive
Mission and worship have quite a history of being kept separate from each other. But what if they were intended to flow into each other, to be mutually edifying? In this session, we’ll explore characteristics of a missional approach to worship, paying attention to how our communal worship forms us for a missional way of life and how this missional living in turn pours back into our communal worship.

Finding God In All Things: Reflections On The Possibility Of Mission Implementation At A Jesuit University In The Area Of Faculty Research, Jos Vm Welie
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
In recent years, much progress has been made in explicating how the educational mission of a Jesuit university can be informed and guided by the specific Catholic and Jesuit identity of the university. In contrast, almost no progress has been made in academic mission implementation in the area of faculty research. This failure is due in part to the widespread conviction that such an implementation is incompatible with academic freedom and will harm the research enterprise. This article argues that exactly the opposite is true. Such implementation could liberate the research enterprise of the methodological and substantive restrictions imposed on …

Making Disciples Of Jesus Christ: Investigating, Identifying And Implementing An Effective Discipleship System, Jeffrey Lynn
Making Disciples Of Jesus Christ: Investigating, Identifying And Implementing An Effective Discipleship System, Jeffrey Lynn
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
According to George Barna's research, the current state of making disciples of Jesus Christ who are "observing all that I have commanded you" is dismal. His research reveals that "only three out of ten born-again adults admitted that they did not have any plan or process by which they intended to fulfill their spiritual goals." This author believes what we have in place for making disciples is inadequate, unimplemented, or both. The purpose of this thesis project is to explain the current state of spiritual formation in the American Church and the reasons why it falls short of God's desire …
Promoting Missionary Mutual Care Through Spiritual Community, David L. Shepherd
Promoting Missionary Mutual Care Through Spiritual Community, David L. Shepherd
Doctor of Ministry
Personal struggle and the stressors that catalyze them are inevitable in missionary life. When overly focusing on ministry and enculturation demands, cross-culturally based Christian workers can often neglect intra and inter-personal spiritual formation. The result of such neglect is a lack of purpose, vitality, endurance and effectiveness, and in some cases, the missionary leaves the field altogether. For missionaries to thrive and succeed requires that they place a high priority on mutual and intentional care. Therefore, I will explore the necessity and means of cultivating spiritual community among on-thefield missionaries for their mutual care and development. Chapter 1 introduces the …

Teaching Through Guided Reflection On Short-Term Missions, Jeremy B. Griffin
The Asbury Journal
This paper was presented at Asbury Theological Seminary on March 14, 2014, at the Interdisciplinary Colloquium. This work examines the three sections of a short-term missions trip: pre-trip, during the trip, and post-trip. These sections have unique opportunities for teaching, and each must be navigated with different types of teaching and guided reflection.

Discipleship Process As A Catalyst For Mission Orientation In Chestnut Hill Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Tara J. Vincross
Discipleship Process As A Catalyst For Mission Orientation In Chestnut Hill Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Tara J. Vincross
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem. A lack of discipleship of members in the local church contributes to insufficient spiritual vitality for missional involvement. This in turn plays a part in the plateau or decline of the church. The wide-spread problem of plateaued and declining churches in North America indicates that correct beliefs may not be enough for people to realize spiritual growth. This has been true of the Chestnut Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church, which was plateaued and at times declining, over the last six decades since moving to its current location. An accessible discipleship curriculum focused on individual transformation in devotional life and missional …

Intercalibration Of Quikscat And Oscat Land Backscatter, John Colin Barrus
Intercalibration Of Quikscat And Oscat Land Backscatter, John Colin Barrus
Theses and Dissertations
The Ku-band SeaWinds-on-QuikSCAT scatterometer (QuikSCAT) operated continuously from 1999 to 2009. Though its primary mission was to estimate global ocean winds, QuikSCAT has proven useful in a variety of geophysical studies using land backscatter measurements. The end of the primary QuikSCAT mission in 2009 has prompted interest for continuing the QuikSCAT land dataset with other scatterometers. The Oceansat-2 scatterometer (OSCAT), launched in 2009, is a viable candidate for continuing the QuikSCAT time series because of the similarities of both sensors in function and design. An important difference in the sensors is that they operate at slightly different incidence angles. Continuing …
Discipleship As A Catalyst For Personal Transformation In The Christian Faith, Vanessa Marie Seifert
Discipleship As A Catalyst For Personal Transformation In The Christian Faith, Vanessa Marie Seifert
Theses & Dissertations
Some Christian churches approach the majority of their faith expression with a 'go to the community' dynamic, while other churches focus primarily on attracting the community to 'come to them.' The problem is that there is a growing population of religiously unaffiliated people in the United States for whom traditional forms of faith expression are not meaningful. A new way of thinking about communal faith expression is needed if the church seeks to reach people who are spiritually curious but not interested in the attractional church model. The journey towards organizational change, even for churches, often begins with a commitment …

Five Principles To Make And Multiply Disciples Through The Small Group Ministry, Timothy Yates
Five Principles To Make And Multiply Disciples Through The Small Group Ministry, Timothy Yates
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The unchanging command of the Great Commission is to "make disciples" of all ethnic groups of the world. Unfortunately the church has struggled with her primary mission and has been grossly negligent in equipping church members to become Great Commission leaders. Therefore, this author will develop a small group training manual consisting of five principles to make and multiply disciples through the small group ministry. This manual will provide a laser focus on how to intentionally develop and deploy the common layman within the local church in order to reproduce disciples who reproduce disciples. As a small group pastor, this …

Formissional Worship: Curriculum Design And Delivery, Gregory B. Rosser
ATS Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to measure the cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral changes in students concerning formissional worship as a result of a Master of Ministry class at Mount Vernon Nazarene University entitled Christian Worship. The scriptural foundation was the Shema (Deut. 6:4-5), quoted by Jesus in the Greatest Commandment (Matt. 22:37-40; Mark 12:29-31). The curricular outline was worship as invitation, revelation, participation, formation, contextualization, incarnation, and integration. The instruments used to gather data from the students were two surveys and an online threaded discussion by the students during class. The surveys framed the class as a pre- and …
