Danish Settlement In Fresno County, California: An Example Of Acculturation To A Foreign Environment. 1880-1920, Marianne T. Stecher

The Bridge

Danish settlers were first attracted to Fresno County, California, in the late 1870's. By 1920, at the close of the era of Danish immigration, 1,839 Danes, 1 % of the entire Danish population of the United States, lived in Fresno County. The idea of Mediterranean crops thriving on twenty acres of fertile soil was tempting to aspiring farmers. The possibility of confining farm work to such a small land area seemed more preferable than one-hundred and sixty acres of spreading wheat fields in the midwestern prairie. A prospering fruit farm or a vineyard in sunny California was a dream of …

Missouri Synod congregations should seek to sponsor Haitian refugees and expand their ministry with handicapped parishoners.

Those were just two of literally dozens of recommendations and resolutions passed at the third biennial convocation of black Missouri Synod congregations. Delegates and visitors from more than half of the synod's 200 black congregations participated in the four-day meeting in mid-July in Chicago.

An Evaluation Of The "Affirming Rural Mission" Workshop As A Vital Part Of The Preparation Of Lutheran Pastors For The Town And Country Ministry, Wilbur Gehrke Nov 1970

An Evaluation Of The "Affirming Rural Mission" Workshop As A Vital Part Of The Preparation Of Lutheran Pastors For The Town And Country Ministry, Wilbur Gehrke

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this paper, first of all, is to examine the many problems faced by the people living in town and country communities. By citing various authorities on the rural church, I will demonstrate how these problems also affect the church in town and country.

Secondly, I will discuss the need of a more specialized training for ministerial candidates for the town and country ministry. My research for this section included a study of the placement of ministerial candidates of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod between 1962 and 1967 by Allen Nauss. I also studied the placement of the 1970 …

A History Of First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Bruce A. Odenbach Jan 1970

A History Of First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Bruce A. Odenbach

Student Work

The first white inhabitants of the Valley of the Sioux River came from opposite directions, but in search of the same reward: good homesites in the new Eden of the Dakota Country. After reading of the beautiful falls of the river called "Te-han-kas-an-data" by the Indians, Dr. George M. Staples of Dubuque, Iowa, organized the Western Two Company in 1856. The possibilities of future land exploitation in the area attracted further support of this undertaking, and two frontiersmen were hired to gain possession of the area under the laws of the United States, which allowed up to three hundred twenty …

In November, 1964, The Lutheran Witness commented on the Nobel Prize awarded to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There were those who immediately responded to the article, criticizing both Dr. King and the Witness for casting him in a favorable light.

It is to be expected that there will be some who take exception also to a statement made recently by the President of the American Lutheran Church, Dr. Fredrik A. Schiotz: "Many well-intentioned people have been critical of Dr. King, calling him a Communist. The time for indulging in this luxury is over. It is time for all who …

The Development Of Principal And Practice Toward Government Aid Toreligious Elementary Education In The Lutheran Church Of Brazil, Elmer Reimnitz

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The problem of this thesis is to examine the tension between the official position of the Lutheran Church of Brazil and the practice of its congregations. The development of this tension through the years and the reasoning followed by the congregations and pastors for accepting state aid to religious elementary education will also be examined together with conclusions as to the future course of. the Lutheran Church of Brazil concerning government aid to religious elementary education.

Mammon For Moravian Missions, William J. Danker

The Christian world mission has preached the Gospel and established churches. It has healed the sick and opened hospitals. It has taught those who sought education in the schools it conducted. But it has often shrunk back from structuring a forthright ministry to men's economic needs.

The Self-Understanding Of The Church, Martin L. Kretmann Apr 1965

The Self-Understanding Of The Church, Martin L. Kretmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The theme of the 1965 convention of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod will be the words of our lord to His disciples when He appeared to them on the evening of the day of his resurrection: "As the Father has sent Me, even so I send you." Special attention will be given to the latter phrase in devotions and essays, and the whole convention proceedings will center in the concept that the church, the body of all who believe in Jesus Christ and accept Him as their lord and Savior, is sent into the world on His mission, to …

New Testament Teachings And 20th-Century Church Practice With Special Reference To Relations With Missions And Sister Churches, Carl A. Gaertner Apr 1965

New Testament Teachings And 20th-Century Church Practice With Special Reference To Relations With Missions And Sister Churches, Carl A. Gaertner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The church in the second half of the 20th century is caught up in the restless revolutionary forces sweeping over the face of the earth and inevitably is being shaken out of its complacency and self-satisfaction. In an age like this, everything is being sharply questioned and ruthlessly analyzed. This in itself is not bad. Under the blessing of God, much good should come to the church as a result of honest reevaluation, on the basis of God's Word, of the church's theology, its life in the world, and its mission.

In October 1963, some students at Augsburg College, Minneapolis, Minnesota, decided to do something about the young children they often saw playing on the Augsburg campus. After some inquiry, they learned that many of these children--all of whom were from the immediate neighborhood of this city campus--were receiving little attention and guidance from their homes. Consequently, a few Augsburg students · acquainted themselves with the children and began meeting once a week with small groups of them and the present program known as the Augsburg Children's Group was begun.

From Advent To Shrove Tuesday, Walter E. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

Liturgical life and activity have not been at a standstill since the close of World War II. Already more than a decade ago more books on worship and liturgics were being published in English than in any other area of theological literature. It is likely that this is true also today. At present more courses in liturgics are being offered at theological schools of North America than ever before in American history; they continue to increase in quantity and quality from year to year. Services of worship conducted in American churches of our day reflect concern for decorum and order …

January 1964, O.P. Kretzmann

Campus Commentary

"Dear Brother:

It was exactly 1:25 pun. CST on Friday, November 22, when the news hit the campus: "President Kennedy is dead." Professors closed their books, and students filed dazedly out of classrooms. Death was only a vague word to many of them — and this was the first time it had come to one whom every one of them knew."

Factors Related To The Life And Growth Of Adult Bible Classes In The Lutheran Church, Paul Pallmeyer May 1963

Factors Related To The Life And Growth Of Adult Bible Classes In The Lutheran Church, Paul Pallmeyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

A serious concern of many Protestant churches today is their failure to enlist a large proportion of their adult members in group Bible study. One such church body is The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. As will presently be shown, this denomination has vigorously promoted adult Bible study over the last decade and a half, but there remains a continued resistance by the adult membership to participation in Bible classes.

The present project was designed.to uncover some factors which show a relationship to this resistance to group Bible study by members of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. A series of interviews with Bible …
