Pacific Islander Pastors And Missionaries: Some Historiographical And Analytical Issues, Doug Munro, Andrew Thornley
Pacific Studies
In global terms, the deployment of indigenous pastors and their equivalents in the dissemination of Christianity was unusual. A notable exception was in the Pacific Islands, where the widespread use of native teachers and preachers was a feature of the missionization process. Their role was not adequately reflected in the historiography of the region until the publication of Ron and Marjorie Crocombes’ seminal book The Works of Ta‘unga in 1968. The Crocombes inspired an outpouring of research on pastors and teachers, which this article describes, categorizes, and assesses. The article concludes with suggestions for further research.

Small Satellite Conference
Currently the GN&C’s Propulsion Branch of the NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is conducting a broad technology development program for propulsion devices that are ideally suited for nanosatellite missions. The goal of our program is to develop nanosatellite propulsion systems that can be flight qualified in a few years and flown in support of nanosatellite missions. The miniature cold gas thruster technology, the first product from the GSFC’s propulsion component technology development program, will be flown on the upcoming ST-5 mission in 2003. The ST-5 mission is designed to validate various nanosatellite technologies in all major subsystem areas. It …

Small Satellite Conference
Recently, there has been an increased interest in using nanosatellites in space science missions due to many unique science mission architectures that are only possible with a nanosatellite constellation. Hundreds of small and lightweight nanosatellites can form an intelligent constellation acting as a distributed network of instruments. In this way, measurements can be obtained that are not possible with traditional single spacecraft architectures. Such a constellation could take simultaneous, in situ measurements of dynamic phenomena in the Earth’s magnetosphere. This type of data is considered to be a critical element in the NASA Sun-Earth Connection (SEC) roadmap. Currently, the SEC …

Low Cost Planetary Exploration: Surrey Lunar Minisatellite And Interplanetary Platform Missions , Susan Jason, Jeff Ward, Alex Da Silva Curiel, Andy Phipps, Luis Gomes, Martin Sweeting
Small Satellite Conference
In order to meet the growing global requirement for affordable missions beyond Low Earth Orbit, two types of platform are under design at the Surrey Space Centre. The first platform is a derivative of Surrey’s UoSAT-12 minisatellite, launched in April 1999 and operating successfully in-orbit. The minisatellite has been modified to accommodate a propulsion system capable of delivering up to 1700 m/s delta-V, enabling it to support a wide range of very low cost missions to LaGrange points, Near-Earth Objects, and the Moon. A mission to the Moon - dubbed “MoonShine” - is proposed as the first demonstration of the …

Lessons From The Past And Strategies For The Future: Using Domestic, International And Comparative Law To Overturn Sodomy Laws, Charlene Smith, James Wilets
Seattle University Law Review
This Article will first discuss the legal importance of challenging sodomy laws, even though those laws are rarely enforced. It will then discuss the importance of incorporating international and comparative law in formulating these challenges. In Section II, Professor Charlene Smith will discuss past and future strategies, focusing on the topics of equal protection, morality, and the difference (or lack thereof) between acts and status. In Section III, Professor Jim Wilets will explore incorporating international and comparative law into domestic challenges to U.S. sodomy laws. This Article will demonstrate that there is binding Supreme Court authority requiring all U.S. courts …

MARGIE will be a large-area, wide field-of-view, hard x- ray/gamma-ray imaging telescope capable of providing accurate positions for faint gamma-ray bursts in near-real- time and of performing a sensitive survey of both steady and transient cosmic sources. The instrument is designed to image faint bursts at the low-intensity end of the log N - log S distribution. MARGIE was recently selected by NASA for a mission-concept study for an Ultra Long Duration Balloon flight. We describe a program to develop an instrument based on the new detector technology of either cadmium zinc telluride room-temperature semiconductors or pixelated cesium iodide scintillators …

Small Satellite Conference
The BIRD mission of the German Aerospace Centre shall demonstrate the scientific and technological value and the technical and programmatic feasibility of a remote sensing small satellite mission under low budget constraints. The payload -a new generation of cooled infrared detectors- is adapted to the mission objective - the investigation of hot spots caused by forest fires or volcanic activities completed by the diagnosis of vegetation conditions and changes. BIRD -the Bispectral Infra-Red Detector- is a three-axis stabilised spacecraft within a volume of 0.21 m3 and a mass of 88 kg. In flight configuration with one fixed and two deployed …

A Multi-Faceted Program To Recruit And Develop African Seventh-Day Adventist Writers, Enock Okari Omosa
A Multi-Faceted Program To Recruit And Develop African Seventh-Day Adventist Writers, Enock Okari Omosa
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Although the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) in Kenya has about 500,000 believers, most of the literature read and used by its members was originally written by Christians from the West. This study identifies some of the problems caused by the lack of African Adventist writers producing acceptable African Adventist literature for Adventist members and other Africans in Kenya, and points the way toward positive measures to remedy the situation.
Method
In order to design an appropriate program to recruit and develop African Seventh-day Adventist writers in Kenya, an attempt is made to examine the kind of literature needed and …

Oral Histories
James Brickley served as the sixteenth president of Eastern Michigan University from 1975 to 1978. This interview is an account of his time as president of EMU, the adjustments made by his family in moving to campus, the attitude of the faculty at the time of his arrival, and the changes that Brickley effected once taking office. This interview was conducted for the purpose of gathering primary research for Laurence Smith’s book, Eastern Michigan University: A Sesquicentennial Portrait (1999).
