An Exploration Of The Contributions Of Parenting Styles And Peer Relationships On The Emotional Expression Of Second-Generation Indian-Americans, Smitha M. Kashi

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation used a qualitative analysis methodology to study the contributions of parenting styles and peer relationships on the emotional expressivity of second generation Asian Indian-Americans. Seven participants participated in a 60 - 90 minute long semi-structured interview and the content was analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Most previous research regarding this topic has been conducted on White American or European individuals and does not take into consideration the many intersectionalities that second-generation Indian-Americans hold. Many participants discussed the lack of direction they experienced in regards to learning about their emotions and disclosed that college and young adulthood provided …

Providing A Paradigm Of Pastoral Care For The Marginalized Through Jesus Centered Eyes At Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church, Dawn E. Pratt Oct 2024

Providing A Paradigm Of Pastoral Care For The Marginalized Through Jesus Centered Eyes At Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church, Dawn E. Pratt

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This project outlines a paradigm of pastoral care for the marginalized through Jesus-centered eyes. Enhancing resources and implementing pastoral care within Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church (CCF) will establish a Jesus-centered pastoral care center while developing a more profound theological paradigm to identify and implement strategies to enhance pastoral care in marginalized communities. CCF's pastoral theological approach to empathy requires that many layers of different circumstances be inquired about while keeping close to the subject or individual in need. CCF is the vehicle that has established a transformational view through the eyes of Jesus at the center. A solid literature review …

Dipl 3850 / Core 3850 Church, State, And Politics In Latin America, Benjamin Goldfrank Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

This course has two central objectives: to provide students with an understanding of the evolving role of religion in Latin American politics, with a primary emphasis on the role of Catholicism and the Catholic Church from the period of the Second Vatican Council until the present; and to provide students an opportunity to reflect on the normative questions of how religious beliefs and religious institutions should affect politics and of how different political systems and state policies should affect the practice of religion. Major themes, examined through both Catholic and non-Catholic perspectives, include the institutional relationship between the Catholic Church …

The Color Of Alignment: The Effect Of Personality On Mission In Nonprofit Organizations Serving Individuals With Disabilities, Meaghan A. Gasch Oct 2024

The Color Of Alignment: The Effect Of Personality On Mission In Nonprofit Organizations Serving Individuals With Disabilities, Meaghan A. Gasch

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

A quantitative correlational study examined the relationship between employees' personalities and mission alignment in non-profit organizations serving individuals with disabilities in South Florida. Using the True Colors personality assessment and a custom mission alignment survey, data from 53 employees were analyzed. Findings revealed that the "Blue" personality type had the strongest effect on mission alignment perceptions, with the "Green" type also showing significant impact. However, ANOVA results indicated no statistically significant differences in overall mission alignment scores across personality types, suggesting other organizational factors also play a role. Key limitations included a small sample size, which constrained statistical power, and …

Understanding Of Love And Leadership Preferences: Cross-Cultural Approach, Alexander Averin, Richard Diddams Sep 2024

Understanding Of Love And Leadership Preferences: Cross-Cultural Approach, Alexander Averin, Richard Diddams

Journal of Fundamental & Applied Business Research

While there is a plethora of research about the influence of culture on leadership behavior (Den Hartog et al., 1999; Dickson et al., 2003; Dorfman et al., 2012), there is very limited and inconsistent understanding of the impact of love on leadership preferences. This paper examined the fundamental human sentiment of love and how understanding of it in different cultures informs leadership preferences in those contexts. The study employed a qualitative design methodology to explore understanding of love and leadership preferences via open-ended surveys and in-depth interviews of respondents representing two dissimilar cultures of China and the United States. These …

Is Acts Really “The Most Overtly Missionary Book”?, Ekaputra Tupamahu Sep 2024

Is Acts Really “The Most Overtly Missionary Book”?, Ekaputra Tupamahu

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

The aim of this article is twofold: first, to challenge the white reading of the book of Acts, and second, to offer an alternative reading by placing the story of the marginalized people, the colonized people, at the center. The first part of this article interrogates how white pentecostal scholars read the book of Acts as a missionary book and identify themselves with the disciples in the book of Acts. After presenting the problems with this reading, I propose an alternative interpretation of the movement in Acts as a migration movement instead of a missionary movement. Reading it from a …

Authenticity And Worship Technology: An Evaluation Of The Use Of Prerecorded Vocal And Instrumental Tracks In Worship In Augusta, Georgia, Susan R. Burgess

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Every week, congregations in Augusta, Georgia, gather for corporate worship. A common practice among these congregations is incorporating pre-recorded music technology in their services. Technological advancements have significantly transformed the worship landscape. In this performance-oriented culture, the focus at times shifts from congregationally focused praise to a worship stage production, overshadowing the importance of biblical and authentic worship. This phenomenological case study investigates the lived experiences of worshipers in Augusta, Georgia, focusing on the perceptions of authenticity of worship when pre-recorded music is used. The study involved 15 participants from the Central Savannah River Area, examining their perspectives on authentic …

Church Adoption: Three-Pronged Elements That Support The Revitalization Of Coastal Church Battery Park Location In Virginia, Michael Christopher Bard Aug 2024

Church Adoption: Three-Pronged Elements That Support The Revitalization Of Coastal Church Battery Park Location In Virginia, Michael Christopher Bard

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The church is God’s plan for delivering the good news of Jesus Christ’s finished work on the Cross. This finished work is evidenced through the bodily resurrection of Christ (1 Cor. 15). In the US a steady decline in church attendance has been prevalent over the past three decades and church buildings are either near empty or closing. This research explores the concept of church adoption merger in hopes of one avenue that would promote revitalization of local fellowships. Though multiple elements are supportive in revitalization this research explore three elements that should lead towards centralizing the church on Christ. …

The Great Spirit In Indigenous Peoples' Lives And The Future Of Pneumatology, Jojo M. Fung Sj

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

With the unsustainability of the current global economic and financial systems that have exacerbated the ecological crises, it is timely to turn our attention to the shamanic religiosity of the indigenous peoples. The wisdomteachings of shamanic pneumatology are invaluable in helping the earth community to negotiate this critical ecological era. The first part of this paper explains the indigenous understanding and experience of the Great Spirit. The second part will delve into the future of pneumatology in terms of the three major paths: live-in dialogue, plunging into the depth of religious mystical traditions, and dialogue with modern science and cosmology.

Shaping A Culture Of Encounter In A Fragmented World: Culture, Politics, And The Promise Of Interreligious Dialogue, Leo D. Lefebure Jul 2024

Shaping A Culture Of Encounter In A Fragmented World: Culture, Politics, And The Promise Of Interreligious Dialogue, Leo D. Lefebure

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

We are constantly reminded on many different fronts that our global community is facing crises of major proportions. Of these, ethno-religious nationalism emerging in many different countries of the world, and the rapidly increasing destruction of our Earth's ecosystem manifested in the phenomenon termed “climate change,” stand out as key challenges facing all of us. Pope Francis has called on all people of good will to work together in stemming the tide of destruction, and highlights the importance of interreligious dialogue in his regard. This essay names five areas wherein interreligious dialogue and cooperation may be applied to usher in …

It will show the relationship between Jesus' experience of God as Abba and mosim, our main theme.

God And Creation In The Writings Of Pseudo-Dionysius And Brahmabandhab Upadhyay, Simplicio D'Souza Jul 2024

God And Creation In The Writings Of Pseudo-Dionysius And Brahmabandhab Upadhyay, Simplicio D'Souza

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Christian theology over the centuries has established itself in Western categories of thought. The official Church magisterium at times is at pains to acknowledge, nay condone, expressions of theological thought in categories other than the established ones. In our paper, we explore the theological consonances between a classical Western theologian and an Eastern (rather Asian) theologian. If Pseudo-Dionysius attempted to interpret Christianity through Neoplatonism, Brahmabandhab Upadhyay explores Christianity through the Indian Advaita Vedānta. We place them into dialogue in their theological explorations regarding God and creation, only to realize that expressing the inexpressible can happen in different cultures, yet be …

A Muslim-Catholic Mariology Iii1: Maryam Umm Eisa (Mary, Mother Of Jesus), R. T. Oliveros Jul 2024

A Muslim-Catholic Mariology Iii1: Maryam Umm Eisa (Mary, Mother Of Jesus), R. T. Oliveros

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The Virgin Birth in Islam is not about Maryam but she was chosen by Allāh for something bigger than herself. Maryam was 'made pure' by Allah (3.42) to be the perfect receptacle of the 'Word' who is Jesus the Christ (Eisa al-Masih). Her being immaculate (pure and sinless) is not to draw attention to herself but it is about the child—Eisa (Jesus), central to Allah's divine plan.

Body And Prayer: Comparing Taoist And Christian Methods Of Meditation, Paulin Batairwa Kubuya Sx Jul 2024

Body And Prayer: Comparing Taoist And Christian Methods Of Meditation, Paulin Batairwa Kubuya Sx

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This article explores the problems arising from the cross-cultural setting where these eastern and western meditative traditions meet. It further suggests that every interpretation and expansion of methods of meditation has to bear in mind the broadness and complexity of the new multicultural environment where the old techniques are being practiced. Such awareness will enable the birth of appropriate methods inspired by old traditions and yet fit for today's spiritual needs. Within overviews of the Taoist and Christian practices of meditation, we focus on the body—its role and place in meditation—to understand how Taoist and Christian meditations are related.

Understanding And Accessing North Korean Religion, Byun Jin Heung Jul 2024

Understanding And Accessing North Korean Religion, Byun Jin Heung

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Questions about North Korean religion always come with a question mark, and the general level of understanding about North Korean society is very low. This stems from doubts about North Korean communism. However, North Korea is a human society in which people live. As the society of North Korea has changed, so has the religion of North Korea. North Korea, especially after the collapse of the Cold War between East and West, has sought to change to survive and has used religion to gain recognition and acceptance from the international community. Religion has always been a tool to be used. …

Reading Colonial Transitions: Archival Evidence And The Archaeology Of Indigenous Action In Nineteenth-Century California, Lee M. Panich, Gustavo Flores, Michael Wilcox, Monica V. Arellano

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Archaeologists in North America and elsewhere are increasingly examining long-term Indigenous presence across multiple colonial systems, despite lingering conceptual and methodological challenges. We examine this issue in California, where archaeologists and others have traditionally overlooked Native persistence in the years between the official closing of the region’s Franciscan missions in the 1830s and the onset of US settler colonialism in the late 1840s. In particular, we advocate for the judicious use of the documentary record to ask new questions of Indigenous life during this short but critical period, when many Native Californians were freed from the missions and sought new …

China Maritime Report No. 39: A Hundred Men Wielding One Gun - Life, Duty, And Cultural Practices Aboard Plan Submarines, Conor M. Kennedy

CMSI China Maritime Reports

Submarine performance is not just measured in technical terms, but also in how crews operate over time. As the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) increasingly deploys its submarine force beyond the near seas on long-distance combat readiness and training missions, studying the force’s human components benefits a broader understanding its overall effectiveness. This report explores work and living conditions, crew endurance, service culture, political requirements, and approaches to resolving human issues in the submarine force. An inherently dangerous and challenging profession, the submarine force has gradually developed numerous solutions to address various challenges to prevent non-combat attrition among crews. Life …

Study Objective: We previously reported that during a 45-day simulated space mission, a dynamic lighting schedule (DLS) improved circadian phase alignment and performance assessed once on selected days. This study aimed to evaluate how DLS affected performance on a 5-minute psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) administered multiple times per day on selected days.

Methods: Sixteen crewmembers (37.4 ± 6.7 years; 5F) underwent six cycles of 2 × 8-hour/night followed by 5 × 5-hour/night sleep opportunities. During the DLS (n = 8), daytime white light exposure was blue-enriched (∼6000 K; Level 1: 1079, Level 2: 76 melanopic equivalent daytime illuminance (melEDI) lux) …
