“You are a curious and well-travelled group having been on every continent on mission trips, studying abroad or satisfying your curiosity by getting out and seeing the world. The adventure is worth the risk.’ You don’t let grass grow under your feet - you have studied in England, France, Saudi Arabia, China, and virtually every corner of the globe. As a group, you speak an astounding 25 different languages: Turkish, Farsi, Japanese, Shanghainese, Taiwanese, Chinese, Arabic, Dutch, Portuguese, Hungarian, Spanish, French, …

A Good Treaty, Thomas E. Mcmahon Jul 2015

A Good Treaty, Thomas E. Mcmahon

Akron Law Review

Time and space do not permit me to comment on the many worthy provisions within Protocol 1, so I have chosen two articles in the Protocol which strike me as important in the light of my experience: 1) Article 26 - Medical Aircraft in Contact or Similar Zones, and 1I) Article 77 - Protection of Children.

Foreign Doctors At The Imam’S Court: Medical Diplomacy In Yemen’S Coffee Era, Nancy Um Jul 2015

Foreign Doctors At The Imam’S Court: Medical Diplomacy In Yemen’S Coffee Era, Nancy Um

Art History Faculty Scholarship

This article brings together trade records left by Dutch and English East India Company merchants, chronicles in Arabic, and a published French travel narrative to shed light on an overlooked phenomenon, that of early modern medical diplomacy to Qasimi Yemen during the early eighteenth century. In this era, foreign merchants flocked to the southern Arabian Peninsula, many with the interest of procuring coffee, a commodity that was then still difficult to purchase elsewhere. Along with them came doctors and ships’ surgeons, who were called upon to treat Yemen’s imam al-Mahdi Muhammad (d. 1718), who suffered from many ailments in the …

Legal, Operational, And Practical Considerations For Hospitals And Health Care Providers In Responding To Communicable Diseases Following The 2014 Ebola Outbreak, Jane Jordan, Greg Measer, Asha Agrawal, James G. Hodge Jr.

University of Miami Business Law Review

This article analyzes some of the potential issues that may arise during epidemics or other public health emergencies. It specifically focuses on legal and operational preparedness experiences at Emory University during the 2014 Ebola crisis. Emory University Hospital was the first health care facility in the U.S. to treat patients diagnosed with Ebola Viral Disease (EVD). Although EVD has particularly frightening symptoms and a high mortality rate, its containment and treatment implicate similar legal, practical, and operational issues as other highly infectious and communicable diseases. These issues include laws related to: isolation and quarantine; travel restrictions; duties to treat highly …

Local Government Units As Potential Partners In Maximizing The Effectiveness Of Service-Learning Programs Of Universities In Central Philippines, Eric Loretizo May 2015

Local Government Units As Potential Partners In Maximizing The Effectiveness Of Service-Learning Programs Of Universities In Central Philippines, Eric Loretizo

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Reciprocity, as one of the principles of Service-Learning, entails mutuality in the implementation of an S-L program. One of the facets of mutuality is on the concern on the choice of a community, which serves as program host. The choice is critical to the success or failure of the program.

Universities and colleges have tested-and-proven mechanisms for the selection and sustenance of their community service hosts. Many of them are, however, constrained in maximizing their efforts due to either lack of manpower, resources or even the time to look into potential areas and fields of service. This may be true …

Exploring The Relationship Between Preadmission Factors And Dental School Student Success, Nadege J. Dady

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This quantitative study assessed the preadmission factor relationship to success at a graduate dental school. Preadmission factors are used nationally to assess student ability. There are concerns about the reliability of these factors in measuring URM student ability. 1,275 records were collected and assessed for those admitted between the years 1998-2009. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship of the pre admission variables to the continuous variable Dental School GPA. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship of the pre admission variables to the dichotomous categorical variables of Licensure Obtainment and Degree Awarded Status. Based …

Ang Buhay sa Nayon/Life in the Valley, is an oral history project consisting of twenty-three interviews with seventeen Filipino Americans from the Shenandoah Valley. These video oral histories, including transcripts and donated photographs, are now part of the Shenandoah Living Archive at James Madison University. This oral history collection is also showcased in a digital exhibit: http://sites.jmu.edu/lifeinthevalley/. The website touches on a myriad of aspects of Filipino American life, but strives overall to put the interviewees’ experiences in historical context and to understand how Filipinos have formed a community in rural Virginia.
