Understanding Public Perception Of Telemedicine, Carolyn Majkrzak, Sarah Strenke, Katie Vraspir Jan 2019

Understanding Public Perception Of Telemedicine, Carolyn Majkrzak, Sarah Strenke, Katie Vraspir

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The healthcare system in the United States is struggling to meet the needs of a growing patient population amidst the burden of provider shortages and rising costs, where no simple or easy answer exists. However, telemedicine has emerged as a possible solution with well documented benefits such as increasing provider coverage and saving costs. Despite the proven benefits, many people do not use telemedicine and there is little data to answer why it is underutilized. Therefore, this study sought to understand the public’s perception of telemedicine service. It was hypothesized that gender, age, number of children in the household, education …

Interprofessional Service Learning In The Dominican Republic To Promote Ipec Competencies, Megan C. Lieb, Christina Liebrecht

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

According to the Institute of Medicine, “all health professionals should be educated to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team”. Patient care is multifaceted, transcending any one discipline. The key to improved patient outcomes is collaborative practice. Service learning is one educational opportunity which allows students to work in partnership with learners from other health related disciplines to deliver care in underserved communities, and develop much needed competency in interprofessional collaboration. A mixed methods study was conducted to determine if participation in an interprofessional service learning experience will positively affect student achievement of interprofessional competencies. The IPEC Competency …

Reproductive health is an important indicator of overall population health and is a priority of international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO). This paper will evaluate whether SRH, specifically modern contraceptive access, is met throughout areas of Central America, with a focus on the country of Costa Rica.

Servant Leadership Towards Cultural Competency And Critical Thinking: A Mixed Methods Study In Zambia, Jill Marie Brown Jan 2019

Servant Leadership Towards Cultural Competency And Critical Thinking: A Mixed Methods Study In Zambia, Jill Marie Brown

Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

There is a paucity of occupational therapy literature related to the professional development process that occurs when students participate in immersive, international servant leadership experiences in developing countries. A scarcity of literature exists on how such culturally rich experiences can influence the development of the participating students’ dispositional critical thinking and cultural competency skill sets. This mixed methods study depicts how a 3-week servant leadership experience in Zambia, Africa, measured the acquisition of dispositional critical thinking and cultural competency skill sets in novice to experienced occupational therapy students. Moreover, this study infuses a constructivist grounded theory approach to uncover a …

Thus Sayeth The Matthean Lord: Exploring The Intersection Of The Quest For The Historical Jesus And The Proclaimation Of The Biblical Jesus, Edward T. Wright Jan 2019

Thus Sayeth The Matthean Lord: Exploring The Intersection Of The Quest For The Historical Jesus And The Proclaimation Of The Biblical Jesus, Edward T. Wright

The Asbury Journal

The themes of Biblical Studies and mission meet in a significant way at the intersection of the quest for the historical Jesus (an aspect of biblical studies) and the proclamation of the biblical Jesus (an aspect of the mission of the Church). This intersection undoubtedly occurs in the context we currently find ourselves, the evangelical seminary setting. This paper explores a passage, Matthew 4:-11, that has both significant theological content but also some rather difficult historical issues. When confronted with this type of problem, is it possible to navigate the passage in such a way that the historical Jesus and …

2019-August-Global Experiences, Bill Gatton College Of Pharmacy, East Tennessee State University, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

On a trip this summer to Uganda, Gatton’s student group, led by Dr. Susie Crowe, learned very quickly that the resource-limited country didn’t have access to the same healthcare resources that they were used to having.

“The hospitals were frequently out of medications,” said Crowe, director of experiential education. “As pharmacists, we had to make other recommendations, like changing an antibiotic to something that was available, or reallocate resources or medications.”

While working with limited resources was a major challenge, the students soon understood how much they were learning from the experience.

“We hold a lot of knowledge that can …

Application Of Theory To Guide Development Of A Rehabilitation Service-Learning Project In Guatemala, Mary Zadnik, Suzanne Trotter, Cindy Mathena

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

International community-based rehabilitation service-learning projects in physical and occupational therapy education programs may impact underserved communities internationally. The intentional inclusion of learning in service activities has been identified as service-learning. Extending the impact and education beyond the service project is necessary in order to provide a sustainable outcome for the community. Faculty at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences partnered with Potter’s House Association International to develop an interprofessional program to address the rehabilitation needs and continuity of care following a one-week project serving the community members of the Guatemalan City Garbage Dump. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between senior community health nursing students’ ATI test scores and their clinical community health nursing experiences, either in-country or out-of-country. ATI test scores were reviewed for the two groups. Focus groups were held to discuss any similarities or differences in the …

A Failed Water Intervention In The Haitian Central Plateau, Christine M. Platt Jan 2019

A Failed Water Intervention In The Haitian Central Plateau, Christine M. Platt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Secular and non-secular mission efforts to developing countries continue to grow and voluntourism is at an all-time high. The literature is corpulent with examples of failed mission health interventions. However, a noticeable gap exists of studies that address conflict leading to intervention failures as a result of intercultural communication. The purpose of this exploratory is to better understand intercultural communication challenges existing in short-term medical missions (STMMs) by better understanding the lived experience of participants of a clean water intervention in the Haitian Central Plateau. The intervention was planned and executed after the devastating 2010 earthquake and resulting cholera outbreak. …

All female Indian pilgrims of reproductive age who underwent pregnancy screening at secondary care IHMM hospitals during …

The Process Of Loss, Isidro Pentzke Jr. Dec 2018

The Process Of Loss, Isidro Pentzke Jr.

MFA in Visual Arts Theses

This paper proposes that digital media has changed the way art is viewed and experienced. This investigation into technology unpacks the effect that technology has on our society. Through the process of photography and digital media, the exploration of social interactions with technology is observed. The observation that is highlighted in this artwork is multilayered, which includes the digital rituals and the acceptance of new digital social norms. In addition, an argument is made that due to this change in social acceptance to the new digital world, there seems to be a disconnect between those who are engrossed in the …
