Conflict Profiles And Team Outcomes In Cross-Disciplinary Teams: An Integrated Latent Profile Analysis And Natural Language Processing Approach, Francisco Cima, Pilar Pazos Jan 2024

Conflict Profiles And Team Outcomes In Cross-Disciplinary Teams: An Integrated Latent Profile Analysis And Natural Language Processing Approach, Francisco Cima, Pilar Pazos

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Team conflict is a naturally emerging phenomenon resulting from individuals' interactions during project execution. Cross-disciplinary teams can experience higher levels of conflict than single-discipline teams because of the increased diversity of knowledge and perspectives. Research has shown that team conflict can emerge from different types of disagreements (cognitive and interpersonal), which have different implications for team functioning. Past empirical research has focused on the impact of both conflict types independent from each other while overlooking their combined effects. This work examines the conflict profiles resulting from the combined levels of interpersonal and cognitive disagreements and their association with team outcomes. …

Big Tech Becomes Psychic: The End Of Personal Autonomy, Zachary Williams Jan 2024

Big Tech Becomes Psychic: The End Of Personal Autonomy, Zachary Williams

Journal of Law, Technology, & the Internet

Individual choice is being threatened. Private companies already held the ability to nudge consumer choices with targeted advertising. Now, with the rise in data collection and the innovation of technology and machine learning, companies are beginning to garner the ability to entirely manipulate them. Major companies can create a psychographic profile of any user using copious amounts of data collected and stored in what is essentially a library of information on each user. With access to personal or sensitive data from multiple digital markets, the profile could not only correctly identify not only a user’s likes and dislikes, but even …

Internalized Racism: A Theoretical Model, William Glen Fisher Jan 2024

Internalized Racism: A Theoretical Model, William Glen Fisher

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

Internalized racism exists, we can observe and measure the effect it has on people. It manifests from both the psychological and sociological factors that form a person’s racial self-image. As Campón and Carter (2015) state: “less attention to date has been given to … how racial minority groups appropriate (i.e., take in) racial beliefs.” (p.498). In this dissertation, I explore how internalized racism forms. Further, I propose a new theoretical model integrating two concepts, the racialized self and racialized experiences. Racism is found at different levels, within the self through the racialized self, it highlights how People of Color view …

Welcome To The Fruit Farm: How Queer Farmers Are Shaping The Agroecology Of The Future, Alessandra Del Brocco Jan 2024

Welcome To The Fruit Farm: How Queer Farmers Are Shaping The Agroecology Of The Future, Alessandra Del Brocco

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

The question of sustainability has many different facets, but one of the most urgent issues is that of sustainable agriculture. Decades of agricultural policy demanded farmers go big or get out, more colloquially known as the government directive of the 20th century to farm “fencerow to fencerow”. In the 21st century, we now face a near-critical consolidation of farmland and decline in the overall number of farmers. If sustainability calls for a resilient, diversified agrisystem, how can we change direction at this point in the trajectory?

In this study, I demonstrate how queer farmers make valuable contributions to …

The Effects Of Various Nanoplastics On The Inflammatory Response In Primary Alveolar Epithelial Cells, Eunice J. Pak Jan 2024

The Effects Of Various Nanoplastics On The Inflammatory Response In Primary Alveolar Epithelial Cells, Eunice J. Pak

Theses and Dissertations

As plastic pollution begins to multiply in the environment and the workplace, gradual degradation of these plastics creates an unseen threat to biological health: nanoplastics. These nanoplastics are common in day-to-day life, and have been found in various internal organs of the human body. The biological and health effects of these nanoplastics are still widely unknown, and only recently has research focused on the impacts of these particles on human health at the cellular level.

In this thesis, poly(methyl methacrylate) and three forms of polystyrene (carboxyl-modified, amine-modified, and neutral surface charge) have been tested on submerged primary C57BL/6 mouse alveolar …

How To Forget, Jesse D. Hoyle Jan 2024

How To Forget, Jesse D. Hoyle

Theses and Dissertations

How To Forget was born from a need to give tangible form to the psychic residue left behind by a life lived. Through the use of silk-screening of red clay mud onto ink-jet photographs, archival textiles, and site-specific installations, I attempt to tie and/or divorce myself from my own and my family's extended history and examine the function of memory within the dynamics of the archive. How To Forget takes a non-linear, non-chronological approach to this examination, compressing decades of time and space through the manipulation of the archive and my own self-portraiture, designed specifically to deny myself from its …

The Incoherence Of Orientalists, Sarah Zaid Alafifi Jan 2024

The Incoherence Of Orientalists, Sarah Zaid Alafifi

Theses and Dissertations

Orientalism, the Western practice of fetishizing cultures, extends beyond mere misrepresentation of the “other;” it epitomizes the underlying structures of colonialism and imperialism, infiltrating everyday life and eroding the moral fabric of Islamic society.

This thesis analyzes colonial control through the exercise of political power and the production of knowledge, investigating key events related to Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign and the narratives of resistance that emerged in opposition to it.

Through the lens of this 18th-century expedition, the study examines how Western knowledge systematically contributed to the dismantling of Islamic systems of knowledge. Select phrases from Colonial-era printed proclamations are extracted …

The Cultural Adaptation Of An Eating Disorders Assessment Tool For South Asian American Women, Neha J. Goel Jan 2024

The Cultural Adaptation Of An Eating Disorders Assessment Tool For South Asian American Women, Neha J. Goel

Theses and Dissertations

South Asians (SAs) are less likely to be screened, referred, and treated for eating disorders (EDs), although they experience these serious health conditions at rates similar to those of their White counterparts. Available ED assessment tools do not adequately capture cultural nuances in the presentation of eating psychopathology in SAs. Thus, the current study culturally adapted the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) to enhance its validity, applicability, and cultural relevance for SA women living in the US. During the cultural adaptation phase, the principal investigator consulted with participant experts (N=24) and research experts (n=4) to create the …

Transgender Perceptions Of Breast Health Care And Utilization Of Preventative Breast Imaging Services, Cherish Parham Jan 2024

Transgender Perceptions Of Breast Health Care And Utilization Of Preventative Breast Imaging Services, Cherish Parham

Theses and Dissertations

Little information exists on transgender patient perceptions of breast imaging care at mammography facilities. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of transgender patients at mammography facilities, their knowledge of breast care, and how these experiences have shaped their perceptions of the breast imaging community and attitude toward breast cancer screening. By applying the revised the Gelberg-Andersen Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations, this study addressed factors specific to the transgender population that may affect their healthcare utilization and how that impacts health outcomes. Researchers collected data from transgender/non-binary individuals in the Richmond, Virginia region …

Fundamentals Of Photography And Creative Practice, Jessica Labatte, Larissa K. Garcia Jan 2024

Fundamentals Of Photography And Creative Practice, Jessica Labatte, Larissa K. Garcia

Faculty Books & Book Chapters

Photography has long been thought of as an accurate representation of the world. A tension, nonetheless, exists between photography as factual record and as constructed image. In this introductory digital photography text, students explore this tension by learning the basic functions of digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras and how to use them to create photographic images.

Leveraging Large Language Models For Enhancing Well-Being In The Digital Age, Xiaobo Guo Jan 2024

Leveraging Large Language Models For Enhancing Well-Being In The Digital Age, Xiaobo Guo

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The 21st century has seen dramatic shifts in human interactions with information, peers, and the environment, primarily driven by the proliferation of online platforms and social media. This thesis examines the role of Large Language Models (LLMs) — advanced forms of artificial intelligence that understand and generate human-like text — in enhancing well-being in the digital age. The study begins by exploring the potential of LLMs to detect early signs …

Consumer Privacy And The Dobbs Disruption, Mason R. Clark Jan 2024

Consumer Privacy And The Dobbs Disruption, Mason R. Clark

Faculty Articles

The right to reproductive privacy is under attack in the United States, and it is losing ground. Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the Supreme Court's 2022 decision that overruled Roe v. Wade's constitutional protection of abortion and jeopardized privacy rights by proxy, reflects this losing posture. Scholarship in reproductive privacy varyingly critiques federal privacy initiatives, evaluates regulatory interventions, and proposes civil rights frameworks in response to Dobbs. This Article, however, pinpoints how Dobbs created a gaping hole in state consumer privacy laws even as they propagated across the United States. Currently, there are no state consumer privacy laws that …

The Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), passed into law in 2021 and made effective January 1, 2024, mandates the creation of a nationwide database that collects owner information of certain legal entities to help combat money laundering and other illicit financial activities. The CTA requires that the legal entity owners provide necessary information directly to the federal government, rather than relying on state and/or federal government officials to collect the information on their behalf. Further, failure to comply may result in the legal entity and owners incurring significant civil penalties of up to $591 per day of violation and even criminal …

Analyzing The Role Of Slc25a32 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Mimansha Shah Jan 2024

Analyzing The Role Of Slc25a32 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Mimansha Shah

Theses and Dissertations

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Despite advances in understanding its molecular pathogenesis, treatment options for HCC remain limited, highlighting the need for identifying novel therapeutic targets. This study investigates the role of SLC25A32, a mitochondrial transporter gene located on chromosome 8q22.3, in HCC progression. SLC25A32 is involved in the transport of tetrahydrofolate (THF) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) into mitochondria, playing a crucial role in one-carbon metabolism and redox balance. Using CRISPR/Cas9 technology, we generated potential SLC25A32 knockout clones in the HCC cell line Huh-7. Quantitative PCR …

Shape Inverse Prediction Of Magnetic Field-Actuated Soft Robots By Neural Network Machine Learning, Lineth J. Perez Monsalve

Theses and Dissertations

Soft robotics has drawn tremendous interest in recent years because the compliance and motion of soft robotics enable biocompatibility and versatility for many applications, such as human-machine interaction, wearable and assistive devices, and health monitoring. This study introduces a novel predictive modeling approach using neural networks for shape control of magnetic soft robots. The robots are made of silicone materials embedded with hard magnetic particles, which respond to the external magnetic field provided by a ring-type of permanent magnet. These robots, free from physical connections to external devices, i.e., non-tethered actuation, hold significant potential for applications in healthcare, such as …

Role Of Human Intermediate Form Prl Receptor I-Tail In The Pathogenesis Of Breast Cancer, Shanwei Shen Jan 2024

Role Of Human Intermediate Form Prl Receptor I-Tail In The Pathogenesis Of Breast Cancer, Shanwei Shen

Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer continues to be the second most common cancer in women in the United States. The neuroendocrine hormone human prolactin (hPRL) plays an important role in normal mammary gland development and growth, stimulating normal breast tissue proliferation and differentiation. Considerable evidence has shown that hPRL is involved in the malignant transformation of human breast tissue. hPRL enhances viability, invasiveness, and proliferation of breast cancer cells in vitro. Evidence from epidemiologic and genetic studies also implicates role of hPRL in the pathogenesis of breast cancer. Its cognate receptor the human prolactin receptor (hPRLr) is required for the action of hPRL. …
