A Corpus-Based Comparison Of Keywords And Themes From The Book Of Mormon And The Bible, Brett James Hashimoto, Joshua Cowley Jan 2024

A Corpus-Based Comparison Of Keywords And Themes From The Book Of Mormon And The Bible, Brett James Hashimoto, Joshua Cowley

Faculty Publications

The Book of Mormon has been studied for its thematic, literary, and theological content using almost exclusively qualitative methods (e.g., Turley, 2019; Morrill, 2017). However, scholars have conducted little analysis comparing it to the Bible, even though those who view it as scripture consider it directly comparable in purpose. (e.g., The Book of Mormon, 2015; McConkie, 1985). The present study applies quantitative linguistic analysis to statistically derive the distinctive language from the two volumes of scripture and identifies the key themes and language from the two books. To accomplish this, corpora of The King James Version of the Bible (66 …

Understanding The Educator-Coach And Student-Athlete Relationship: A Descriptive-Interpretative Study, Thomas J. Saleh

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

A changing landscape in youth sports and educational institutions has resulted in a growing number of high school student-athletes being coached by adults who do not work in the schools they attend. This study provides a foundational understanding of the relationship between in-building coaches, hereafter referred to as educator-coaches, and their student-athletes. Using a generic descriptive-interpretive qualitative research (GDI-QR) approach, this study examines the unique relationship within schools and what benefits and challenges this model may provide for the mentors and mentees involved. Framed around the concepts of natural mentorship and social-emotional learning (SEL), this study highlights how the educator-coaches …

Ceo Marital Status And Corporate Cash Holdings, Ahmed M. Elnahas, Md Noman Hossain, Siamak Javadi Jan 2024

Ceo Marital Status And Corporate Cash Holdings, Ahmed M. Elnahas, Md Noman Hossain, Siamak Javadi

Finance Faculty Publications

We examine the effect of CEO marital status on corporate cash holdings. Consistent with the classical agency framework, we find that firms with single CEOs hold more cash compared to otherwise similar firms with married CEOs and that the excess cash held by single CEOs is significantly discounted by shareholders. Our findings survive a battery of tests to ease endogeneity and selection bias, confirming that results are not simply reflecting innate heterogeneity in preferences. Overall, our findings indicate that a variable outside the common firm- and macro-level determinants, CEO marital status, can significantly influence corporate policies.

Desarrollo, Implementacion Y Evaluacion De Un Seminario De Liberazgo Para Lideres De La Iglesia Central De Cojupeque, El Salvador, Alvaro Rafael Linero Vargas

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church believes in the ministry of all believers, and at its base, the local church is not only led by pastors but also by members who take on leadership roles. In order for these members to excel in their ministries, their training and education must be intentional. The Central Cojutepeque Seventh-day Adventist Church of the Paracentral El Salvador Conference did not have an intentional leadership instruction program that can help said leaders assist in the leading of the church.

Methodology

This project is a research initiative in the field of practical theology. It was applied within …

Encouraging Intergenerational Faith Transmission And Spiritual Growth In Home And Church: Reconnecting Youth And Older Generations Through Family Systems Concepts At The Adelaide Seventh-Day Adventist Church, The Bahamas, Larry L. Green Jan 2024

Encouraging Intergenerational Faith Transmission And Spiritual Growth In Home And Church: Reconnecting Youth And Older Generations Through Family Systems Concepts At The Adelaide Seventh-Day Adventist Church, The Bahamas, Larry L. Green

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

This Doctor of Ministry (DMin) project addresses a pressing issue within the church context of the Adelaide Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Bahamas. We first observed sporadic attendance of our youth (Gen Z and Millennials) and their lack of identity with the church. Wider observation revealed weak relationships among the various generations within our church as well as in our homes. This absence of relatedness across generations potentially hinders some from embracing the community’s faith and growing spiritually.

Method

This study aimed to understand and address the nuanced factors contributing to this generational disconnection through the intervention of an …

Developing A Small Groups Health Ministry At The Ventura County Korean Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Hee Choung Park Jan 2024

Developing A Small Groups Health Ministry At The Ventura County Korean Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Hee Choung Park

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Although the members of the Ventura County Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church (VC KSDA) expressed interest in evangelism, the congregation had not shown evidence of evangelism during the past three years (2017-2020). As the pastor, I suggested that the members lacked a clear, planned, and structured program for outreach during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for small group health programs. This study was to challenge the church to find ways to respond to the growing influence that the church wanted to have on the community.

Method

The program was designed and implemented at the VC KSDA Church in the fall of …

Desenvolvimento De Um Programa Para Capacitar Pastores Em Preparação Pre-Matrimonial Com Antecedência Na Associacao Paulistana De Iasd No Brasil, Jairo De Oliveira Jan 2024

Desenvolvimento De Um Programa Para Capacitar Pastores Em Preparação Pre-Matrimonial Com Antecedência Na Associacao Paulistana De Iasd No Brasil, Jairo De Oliveira

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

At the São Paulo Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brazil, a preliminary survey found that 98% of engaged couples who sought out the pre-marital preparation program offered by the church would get married shortly after the preparation course. Given this trend, there was a need for a strategy to encourage engaged couples to participate in a pre-marital preparation program well in advance. A program was then developed to train pastors in pre-marital preparation in advance in the Sao Paulo Conference whose aim was to form healthy and stable marriages.

Methodology

This study adopted a qualitative approach to …

Cross-Denominational Dialogue: Sola Scriptura In Setting The Table For Charitable And Faithful Christian Discourse, Ciprian Mihai Manea Jan 2024

Cross-Denominational Dialogue: Sola Scriptura In Setting The Table For Charitable And Faithful Christian Discourse, Ciprian Mihai Manea

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

In this project, the problem centers around cross-denominational dialogue. The contemporary Christian theological landscape is highly complex and varied. Theologians engage with different theories of knowledge, authority sources, and theological methods, resulting in diverse perspectives that conflict with each other and with Adventist Christian convictions. The differing rational structures of these perspectives require committed effort to understand and communicate effectively. Best practice cross-denominational dialogue involving the theologically informed must account for these differences and provide a context that can facilitate faithful and charitable discourse. Such a context would not only ease the tensions among different Christian traditions but would …

Estrategia Para Formar Discipulos Na Uniao Sudeste Brasileria Da Igreja Adventista Do Setimo Dia, Eber Soares Nunes Jan 2024

Estrategia Para Formar Discipulos Na Uniao Sudeste Brasileria Da Igreja Adventista Do Setimo Dia, Eber Soares Nunes

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The work of district pastors of the Southeastern Brazilian Union Conference is typically coordinated by a team of eight to twelve administrators and departmental leaders. This structure, in practice, entails the responsibility of implementing an annual average of 48 official church programs with their respective materials, which takes up almost all of their weekends, the period in which has the most access to members. As a result, local church pastors do not have time to make disciples according to Jesus’ mandate in Matthew in the Great Commission (Mat 28:19-20). This study aims to create a discipleship program that answers …

Colonial Experiences And Contemporary Laws, Yun-Chien Chang, Adam Chilton, Nuno Garoupa, Mila Versteeg Jan 2024

Colonial Experiences And Contemporary Laws, Yun-Chien Chang, Adam Chilton, Nuno Garoupa, Mila Versteeg

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Although research suggests that countries’ colonial experiences are associated with a range of contemporary outcomes, the link between colonial experiences and the substance of countries’ laws remains unclear. We explore this question while making four improvements over past research. First, we use more detailed data on both countries’ colonial experiences and contemporary substantive laws. Second, we directly assess whether countries’ shared legal origins—that is, whether they had a common law or civil law system—or their colonial origins—that is, which country had previously colonized them—are more associated with differences in their contemporary laws. Third, we use a research design that makes …

The Additionality Double Standard, James Salzman, David A. Weisbach Jan 2024

The Additionality Double Standard, James Salzman, David A. Weisbach

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Carbon offsets are widely criticized for lacking additionality. The public debate, how- ever, has failed to recognize that the problem of additionality goes far beyond offsets. It arises any time the government subsidizes an activity. Programs with longer histories than offsets and far more money at stake offer valuable lessons for managing lack of additionality in offsets. The article sets out the current efforts to prove offset additionality, explains why major gov- ernment programs present comparable additionality challenges, and show why other programs’ problems of additionality are perceived as significantly different than those for offsets. We examine the toolkit used …

Silicon Valley Bank: A Case Study In Post-Crisis Bank Failures, Anthony Casey Jan 2024

Silicon Valley Bank: A Case Study In Post-Crisis Bank Failures, Anthony Casey

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The 2023 Silicon Valley Bank collapse was the third-largest bank failure in United States (US) history and one of the two largest since the 2008 financial crisis. This event served as the first major test for the post-crisis bank-failure regime in the US. This article evaluates how effectively that regime responded to the challenge. While some critics have questioned the effectiveness of both the regime and the US government's specific actions, others argue that the measures taken successfully mitigated systemic risk. Notably, the government felt compelled to provide discretionary depositor protection beyond what the legal framework required. This suggests that …

Should Unions Play A Role In Merger Review?, Eric A. Posner Jan 2024

Should Unions Play A Role In Merger Review?, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Agencies currently evaluate mergers by conducting a truncated cost-benefit analysis in which the impacts of a proposed merger on various markets must be estimated. Many critics question this method, which requires data that are not always available and assumptions that are not always reliable. An alternative approach would be to conduct merger review as a “structured bargain” among affected parties or their representatives, on the model of corporate bankruptcy. For example, where merging firms are unionized, the unions could be given the right to block a merger that harms their members. Appointed representatives or the agencies themselves could be given …

A Commitment Rule For Insolvency Forum, Anthony Casey, Aurelio Gurrea-Martínez, Robert K. Rasmussen Jan 2024

A Commitment Rule For Insolvency Forum, Anthony Casey, Aurelio Gurrea-Martínez, Robert K. Rasmussen

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In this article, we propose a new rule for determining the proper forum for insolvency proceedings. Currently, the Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency— promulgated by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (“UNCITRAL”)—looks to a debtor’s center of main interest (“COMI”) to determine the proper forum for a foreign main insolvency proceeding. This rule is flawed. It is both inflexible and manipulable. It is also indeterminate and neither requires nor allows advance commitment by debtors. As a result, it leads to uncertainty, increases litigation costs, and opens the door to opportunistic manipulation by debtors. These costs, in turn, raise …
