Expecting Medication Surveillance, Jennifer D. Oliva
Expecting Medication Surveillance, Jennifer D. Oliva
Fordham Law Review
In response to federal financial incentives and mandates, all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories administer electronic prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs). Federal and state policymakers justified the implementation and enhancement of ubiquitous prescription drug monitoring by contending that expansive state drug surveillance was a necessary weapon in the war against the American drug overdose crisis. As is often the case with tools designed for law enforcement surveillance, however, PDMPs have proven susceptible to mission creep. Although pioneer PDMPs were paper-based systems that limited their surveillance to a narrow class of heavily regulated controlled substances, modern …
The Future Of Protection In Un Peace Operations, Emily Paddon Rhoads
The Future Of Protection In Un Peace Operations, Emily Paddon Rhoads
Political Science Faculty Works
United Nations peacekeeping is experiencing a generational shift as several large missions downsize and close. Amid this change, this essay considers the future of the Protection of Civilians (PoC) mandate, which has been a priority of UN peacekeeping since it was first authorized twenty-five years ago. It argues that PoC has evolved significantly, expanding from a narrow focus on physical protection from immediate threats to a holistic approach that includes establishing a protective environment. It suggests that while the PoC mandate has proven effective in reducing violence, the future is fraught with four significant challenges: waning state commitment to UN …

Recent Advances On Engineering Of Silver Related Nanocomposites Toward Antibacterial Applications, Donia Dridi, Nhu-Nang Vu, Jaspal Singh, Mostafa Eesaee, Alireza Saidi, Said Elkoun, Phuong Nguyen-Tri
Revues de littérature, synthèses de connaissances
Nanotechnology-driven advancements through the design of well-sized and shaped nanoparticles provide a compelling solution in the fight against widespread diseases, mortalities, and economic impacts caused by bacterial infections and drug resistance. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have gained recognition as safe and economically viable antibacterial agents to counteract bacterial contamination and multidrug-resistant concerns. This work provides a comprehensive review of the antibacterial mechanisms of Ag NPs and their related nanocomposites. Importantly, it delves into the importance of synthesis strategies in governing the size and shape of desired Ag NPs, along with a detailed examination of their advantages and limitations, on the …

Unsung Heroes In Conservation: Evaluating The Limitations Faced By New England Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers And Proposing Solutions For Their Support And Recognition, Shaylee M. Sarmiento
Honors Theses and Capstones
Wildlife rehabilitation is an often-unacknowledged practice within the overarching field of wildlife protection and conservation. This practice involves the treatment and hopeful release of wild animals affected by various ailments. With the continued expansion of and interest in the field, it could be assumed that wildlife rehabilitation is supported and funded by government bodies, but this is not the case. Because of the lack of funding and resources, many wildlife rehabilitation centers cannot achieve their full rehabilitative potential and expand their reach in the conservation world. Additionally, an absence of support leads critics to question the ethical standards of wildlife …

A New Industry For Student- Athletes: An Analysis Of Nil Implications On Well-Being And Team Dynamics, Jamison W. White
Honors Theses and Capstones
As of June 2021, college athletes are allowed to benefit from selling their name, image, and likeness (NIL) by engaging in contracts with sponsors and businesses. Even though this law was passed to allow athletes to earn a fair pay for their hard work though utilizing their popularity and engaging with fans, its potential effect on athletes remains uncertain. This research examines the effects of NIL agreements on student-athletes’ well-being and team perceptions. More specifically, does the adoption of NIL place additional stress on student- athletes or disrupt their team dynamics? If so, what support can be granted to allow …
Developing A Gender Diverse Stimulus Set For Emotion Expressions, Amir Robertson
Developing A Gender Diverse Stimulus Set For Emotion Expressions, Amir Robertson
Honors Theses and Capstones
Much past research has demonstrated that gender plays an important role in emotion perception, such that gendered stereotypes about emotion seem to shape how we perceive and interpret the emotion expressions of men and women. However, the stimulus sets that are typically used in the vast majority of this research have been based on binary ideas of gender, and purposefully limit common elements of gender presentation, with models posing with limited accessories or personal aesthetic choices. In everyday life, however, individuals’ gender and gender presentation are not limited in these ways and likely contribute in important ways to how we …
Thirty Years Of ‘Emergency’ Food Aid In The Us And Canada: Findings From Comparative Research To Inform Uk Efforts To Tackle Food Poverty And The Need For Foodbanks, Charlotte Spring
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Research observed how food providers in the United States and Canada have made changes during the decades of neoliberal policymaking that have seen foodbanking expand across North America and beyond. These changes, in part, reflect responses to critiques of foodbanking as an inadequate solution to food insecurity. Food charities have variously attempted to improve provision through healthier procurement, choice-based distribution models, diversified programming, and advocacy for policy solutions. Better foodbanking, however, does not negate the influence of corporate donors on food charities’ capacity to foster hunger-preventative change, such as the employment practices of those same donors. Meanwhile, grassroots organisers …

The Estonian And Latvian Orthodox Churches Of The Moscow Patriarchate Before And After The Russian War In Ukraine, Priit Rohtmets, Valdis Teraudkalns
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
From the beginning of the Russian war in Ukraine the Baltic Orthodox churches subordinated to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) have gone through considerable changes in their canonical status, but have also stood out with controversial public statements about the war.
In this article we analyse how the Orthodox churches of the Moscow Patriarchate have reacted to the Russian war in Ukraine and what have been the major canonical changes in Latvia and Lithuania. Additionally, we describe the most important narratives, which the churches have used when speaking about the ongoing war and pay attention to the reaction, which these …

Cerebral Arachnoid Cysts Are Radiographic Harbingers Of Epigenetics Defects In Neurodevelopment, Kedous Mekbib
Cerebral Arachnoid Cysts Are Radiographic Harbingers Of Epigenetics Defects In Neurodevelopment, Kedous Mekbib
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Cerebral arachnoid cysts (ACs) are the most common space-occupying lesion of thehuman brain but we know very little about its pathogenesis and association with other neurological phenotypes complicating clinical management.
To better understand AC pathogenesis and clinical presentation, we conducted wholeexomesequencing of 617 patient-parent trios, analysis of human brain and mouse meningeal single-cell RNA sequencing and natural language processing of patient medical records, the largest and only integrative genomic study of ACs to date.
We found seven genes: ADNP, ARID1B, KDM5C, PURA, FOXP1, MAP2K1 andSCN2A, had an exome-wide statistically significant burden of de novo variants. Our AC candidate genes were …

However, postoperative adverse events using the NSQIP database has not yet been described in adults. This study uses the NSQIP database to examine postoperative complications of airway reconstruction surgery in the setting of racial and sex disparities. Current procedural terminology (CPT) codes were used to identify 260 patients 18 …
Survival Outcomes In T3 Laryngeal Cancer Based On Staging Features At Diagnosis, Vickie Jiaying Wang
Survival Outcomes In T3 Laryngeal Cancer Based On Staging Features At Diagnosis, Vickie Jiaying Wang
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Stage T3 laryngeal cancer is defined by the presence of vocal cord fixation and/or invasion into any of the following: pre-epiglottic space, paraglottic fat, post-cricoid space, or inner cortex of the thyroid cartilage. These cancers are usually treated with chemoradiation rather than upfront total laryngectomy. To our knowledge, no studies have directly compared differences in survival among the varied features within the T3 staging category. This study aims to determine how the presence of each of these staging features impacts overall and laryngectomy-free survival.Patients with clinically-diagnosed T3 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma seen at our institution between 2010-2021 were retrospectively identified. …

They provide in-depth perspectives on how gender equality and the resistance to it are navigated within the religious practices and discourses in Latvia.
Tenets Of Neoconservatism: Biological And Theological Versions Of Life And Gender In Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, Aivita Putniņa
Tenets Of Neoconservatism: Biological And Theological Versions Of Life And Gender In Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, Aivita Putniņa
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The paper examines the tenets of neoconservatism in current Christian discourse. The notion of life that evolves around biology and procreation is seen as a marker of conservative argumentation. As Jordanova (1995) has argued, a shift in the ‘natural’ association of children with their mothers instead of their fathers occurred in the18th century due to a shift in perspective in life sciences and technology. The new model of procreation involving both parents and a biological, rather than theological, understanding of the process supports arguments that justify not ordaining women and taking anti-LGBTQ+ positions while simultaneously deleting its historical ties to …

The Struggle For Eudaemonia: The Eugenics Movement In Psychology And Community Resistance In Connecticut, Eve Galanis
The Struggle For Eudaemonia: The Eugenics Movement In Psychology And Community Resistance In Connecticut, Eve Galanis
Academic Articles
Throughout the twentieth century, the eugenics movement dominated medical discourses in the state of Connecticut. From deportations, coerced institutionalizations and sterilizations, to proposed executions of people with mental illness, eugenic policies were deployed in an attempt to control and direct populations. The state collaborated with academic institutions like Yale University, and agencies like The Eugenics Record Office at Cold Spring Harbor, to endorse pseudo-scientific techniques of surveilling and administering bodies across intersecting lines of race, ability, gender, sexuality, class, and citizenship status. This research examines the biopolitics of eugenics and the contest for economic, geographic, social, and ideological space. Using …

Defense Against The Dark Arts: The Diversity Rationale And The Failed Affirmative Defense Of Affirmative Action, Sheldon Bernard Lyke
Defense Against The Dark Arts: The Diversity Rationale And The Failed Affirmative Defense Of Affirmative Action, Sheldon Bernard Lyke
Washington and Lee Law Review
Over the past forty years, affirmative action advocates have participated in a defensive campaign where they have admitted that affirmative action is a form of justified discrimination. This Article finds this a dangerous strategy because it allows for the practice of misguided beliefs about race and remedies for racism. When schools fail to fight the pernicious perception that affirmative action is a racial preference, they allow the bulk of society to participate in the belief that there are no other remedial justifications for affirmative action—like remedying an institution’s history of discrimination, or curing a school’s present and ongoing discrimination by …
The Violence Of Free Speech And Press Metaphors, Erin C. Carroll
The Violence Of Free Speech And Press Metaphors, Erin C. Carroll
Washington and Lee Law Review
Today, our free speech marketplace is often overwhelming, confusing, and even dangerous. Threats, misdirection, and lies abound. Online firestorms lead to offline violence. This Article argues that the way we conceptualize free speech and the free press are partly to blame: our metaphors are hurting us.
The primary metaphor courts have used for a century to describe free speech—the marketplace of ideas—has been linked to violence since its inception. Originating in a case about espionage and revolution, in a dissent written by Oliver Wendell Holmes, a thrice-injured Civil War veteran, the marketplace has been described as a space where competition …
Comment: Protecting Childhood Independence And The Families Who Embrace It, David Pimentel
Comment: Protecting Childhood Independence And The Families Who Embrace It, David Pimentel
Washington and Lee Law Review
The legal problem of how to give parents flexibility and how to give children independence cuts to the core of some of our most sacred values: (1) how we raise our kids in this society, (2) the degree to which parents are free to raise their children as they see fit, and (3) the extent to which the state gets to substitute its own judgment for that of parents. Incursions into the family, and disruptions of family security and integrity, should be the exception rather than the rule. Schick-Malone joins a small group of legal scholars who are not content …

Background: While studies suggest social media use may increase the risk of poor mental health, no studies have examined how the ways in which people use social media may play a role. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey of N=571 college students who own iPhones at a higher education institution in the northeast US was conducted in October 2022. Social media uses were assessed using the Social Networking Sites Usage & Needs Scale, measuring five different domains: diversion, cognitive, affective, personal integration, and social integration. Scores for all domains could range from 4-20, except social integration which could range from 5-25. …

Coasting North: The Problem With The Jones Act For The Offshore Wind Industry And A Remedy From Canada, Sarah Macleod Nagle
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
This Note is organized into three parts to examine how the Jones Act hampers the U.S. wind energy industry’s construction of offshore wind farms by requiring that only U.S. vessels transport materials from U.S. ports to the wind farms. The Note proposes a license modeled on Canada’s Coasting Trade Act (“CTA”) to allow non-U.S.-flagged vessels to participate in wind turbine construction. Part I will address the development of cabotage law in the United States, the creation of the Jones Act, and its impact on offshore wind. Part II surveys Canada’s cabotage laws, which culminated in the passage of the CTA …
Race To The Bottom: How Equitable Apportionment Could Encourage Overdrafting Of Aquifers, Emily Wells
Race To The Bottom: How Equitable Apportionment Could Encourage Overdrafting Of Aquifers, Emily Wells
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Groundwater is a vital source of water for drinking and irrigation in the United States. However, it was unclear what legal doctrine would apply to apporting interstate groundwater between the states. This changed in Mississippi v. Tennessee, when the Supreme Court ruled that equitable apportionment would the controlling doctrine. The Court though declined to clarify how the doctrine would be applied to groundwater. This Note discusses how equitable apportionment has historically been applied to rivers and hypothesizes how the Court may apply equitable apportionment to groundwater.

Dark "Oro Y Plata" In Montana: The Green Amendment's Defense Of Campaign Finance Transparency, Lucas Della Ventura
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
In the post–Citizens United dark money age, state disclosure regulations are the last line of defense for citizens to learn who is behind unlimited independent expenditures and electioneering communications flooding their states. Underpinning the ability of state governments to promulgate such transparency measures are the informational benefits provided to the public. However, the Supreme Court’s decision in Americans for Prosperity Foundation v. Bonta to invalidate a California disclosure regulation on dark money groups, marks disclosure regulations—the Court’s repeated fallback when striking down more robust campaign finance regulations—with a bull’s-eye. In the face of repeated legal challenges to disclosure regulations, …
