Assessment Of The Impact Of Various Feature Extraction Techniques On The Effectiveness Of Music Genre Classification In Neural Network Models., Sabhdh Grace

ICT

This research focuses on Music Genre Classification (MGC) using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and various datasets, including raw audio files (WAV) and extracted features such as Mel Spectrograms (MS), Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), and Chroma Features (CF). The study employs Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods (ESMM), combining qualitative research and experimental analysis to explore different model inputs and their performance. Several CNN-based models, including 2D CNN, 2D CNN-LSTM, 1D CNN, and 1D CNN-LSTM, were tested. However, the models generally underperformed, with most achieving accuracy of 10% or lower, and the best model (raw audio 1D CNN) reaching only 20%. The research …

Using Machine Learning To Identify Hate Speech And Offending Language On Twitter., Mayara Lorens, Thayene Lorens

ICT

This project focuses on applying Machine Learning (ML) techniques to detect hate speech and offensive language on Twitter, addressing ethical concerns like cyberbullying and fostering a safer online environment. The topic is chosen for its societal significance and business relevance, as hostile online behaviour negatively impacts user experiences and platform credibility.

To achieve this, the study implements four distinct ML models to develop an automated system capable of identifying and categorising content as offensive, non-offensive, or neutral. The system aims to contribute to mitigating harmful interactions on social media and improving user safety by effectively classifying potentially problematic content.

The …

How Black Undergraduate Students Experience Whiteness In Postsecondary Education, Karen Margaret Guettler-James Jan 2024

How Black Undergraduate Students Experience Whiteness In Postsecondary Education, Karen Margaret Guettler-James

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

Critical whiteness scholars have described whiteness as a system of oppression that privileges White identities above others and perpetuates White supremacy. On the college campus, institutional, social, and historical norms reinforce the educational status quo and work together to maintain a system of whiteness that marginalizes Black students. This study investigated perceptions of whiteness held by student participants who self-identify as Black undergraduate students. Through focus group interviews, participants were asked to share their lived experiences with whiteness on the college campus. With the words of the participants, I reveal how campus standards that align with White Eurocentric norms devalue …

Constructed Language (Conlang) Audio Honing, Ronald B. Oakes Jan 2024

Constructed Language (Conlang) Audio Honing, Ronald B. Oakes

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

An important aspect of a constructed language (conlang) is how it sounds when spoken. This dissertation designs and implements a tool to allow the user to hear how their conlang sounds when spoken. This tool will generate spoken language based on sample text in the constructed language. Further, it will enable the user to manipulate the phonetics of the language and hear how these changes impact the language in its spoken form.

This tool also allows users to assess the preferability of the language’s phonetics using Net Auditory Distance under the framework of Beats-and-Bindings Phonology. It was shown that the …

Climate Action Now: How To Fuel A Social Movement, Lama Lteif, Gia Nardini, Tracy Rank-Christman, Lauren Block, Melissa G. Bublitz, Jesse R. Catlin, Samantha N. N. Cross, Anne Hamby, Laura A. Peracchio

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Our research develops a framework that explores how to fuel the climate movement by accelerating grassroots, community-based climate action. Drawing on insights from consumer psychology, our framework identifies the psychological mechanisms that encourage and motivate people, both individually and collectively, to take climate action, thereby contributing to our understanding of how to advance social action and propel a social movement. Our climate action framework builds on: (1) individuals we describe as climate upstanders who rise up to take climate action with like-minded others, and (2) communities of climate upstanders who engage in collective action aimed at addressing the climate crisis. …

Maximizing Mining Operations: Unlocking The Crucial Role Of Intelligent Fleet Management Systems In Surface Mining’S Value Chain, Arman Hazrathosseini, Ali Moradi Afrapoli

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

On the one side, the operational expenses of mining enterprises are showing an upward trend; and on the other side, conventional mining fleet management systems (FMSs) are falling short in addressing the high-dimensionality, stochasticity, and autonomy needed in increasingly complex operations. These major drivers for change have convinced researchers to search for alternatives including artificial-intelligence-enabled algorithms recommended by Mining 4.0. The present study endeavors to scrutinize this transition from a business management point of view. In other words, a literature review is carried out to gain insight into the evolutionary trajectory of mining FMSs and the need for intelligent algorithms. …

When Commanders Decide: Military Prosecutorial Decision-Making In Sexual Assault Cases, Chris Cox Jan 2024

When Commanders Decide: Military Prosecutorial Decision-Making In Sexual Assault Cases, Chris Cox

Scholarly Works

Congress enacted legislation that went into effect in 2023, which transferred prosecutorial decision-making for serious cases, including sexual assault, from Commanders to military lawyers. While there is some research on the military’s criminal justice system that supports shifting the decision-making to military lawyers, there is a large body of research that suggests lawyers, too, suffer from similar impediments when handling decision-making for sexual assault cases. In the wake of this new amendment, it is important to continue assessing how the change will impact case processing, by first clearly understanding what was happening when Commanders had complete authority. This article explores …

Sensitive Inferences In Targeted Advertising, Sarita Schoenebeck, Cami Goray, Amulya Vadapalli, Nazanin Andalibi

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

People’s data is scattered around the Internet. From the meals we eat to the people we meet, we leave detailed data traces online that are then aggregated, modeled, brokered, and sold. Some data types, like medical records or religious beliefs, are legally protected, restricting how they can be collected and used. However, most data has little regulatory protection. Regardless of whether data is protected, most inferences—predictions about people’s identities, attitudes, or interests using machine learning—have even fewer protections. This is a concern for our privacy, dignity, and wellbeing, especially when inferences are sensitive, personal, or intimate in nature.

The Politics Of Naming A Field: Evolution, Controversies, And Strategies Around What We Call “Women’S Studies”, Sydney Lemire Jan 2024

The Politics Of Naming A Field: Evolution, Controversies, And Strategies Around What We Call “Women’S Studies”, Sydney Lemire

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies M.A. Final Projects

The name “Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies,” WGSS, is a name rooted in politics and the academy, evidenced by the evolution of the phrasing even in the field’s relatively short history. In an environment where WGSS is under attack from both neo-fascist policies and neo-liberal budget cuts, we must be certain to put our best, most representative foot forward. This project explores (1) the state of the field’s name today and how it has evolved, (2) why this nomenclature is unstable and contradictory, and (3) what the politics of naming reveal about the changes in the field, the challenges it …

Embracing Plurisexuality: Factors Influencing Self-Identification, Jeiselynn N. Rios Rivera Jan 2024

Embracing Plurisexuality: Factors Influencing Self-Identification, Jeiselynn N. Rios Rivera

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies M.A. Final Projects

Plurisexual labels under the Bi+ umbrella are varied in terms of identity categories, their definition, and the experiences of the people who claim them. Previous research exploring this topic has focused on individual narratives, definitions, and experiences under the Bi+ umbrella through survey and interview methods. While valuable knowledge has been gained as scholars make known how these definitions and experiences converge and deviate from each other, there has been little emphasis on the relational aspect of sexual identity labels, their social construction, and how they are navigated in social contexts. This overlooks the relational and social aspect of sexual …

A Validation Study Of The Occupational Depression Inventory In Poland And Ukraine, Krystyna Golonka, Karine O. Malysheva, Dominika Fortuna, Bożena Gulla, Serhii Lytvyn, Leon T. De Beer, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Renzo Bianchi

Publications and Research

This study examined the psychometric and structural properties of the Polish and Ukrainian versions of the Occupational Depression Inventory (ODI). We relied on two samples of Polish employees (NSample1 = 526, 47% female; NSample2 = 164, 64% female) and one sample of Ukrainian employees (NSample3 = 372, 73% female). In all samples, the ODI exhibited essential unidimensionality and high total-score reliability (e.g., McDonald’s omegas > 0.90). The homogeneity of the scale was strong (e.g., 0.59 ≤ scale-level Hs ≤ 0.68). The ODI’s total scores thus accurately ranked individuals on a latent occupational depression continuum. We found evidence of complete measurement invariance …

Measuring Elementary Students' Level Of Acquisition Of Historical Habits Of Mind, Natalia E. Cruz Jan 2024

Measuring Elementary Students' Level Of Acquisition Of Historical Habits Of Mind, Natalia E. Cruz

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Providing elementary-aged students with opportunities to engage in authentic historical analysis is crucial to building their historical thinking skills. Teaching with primary and secondary sources allows students the opportunity to engage in authentic inquiry-based learning experiences where the acquisition of a historical concept is in their hands. This differs from the traditional social studies learning experience, as these inquiry-based learning experiences are student-centered, and the teacher is present as a guide. Developing social studies instruction utilizing the SOURCES Framework for Teaching with Primary and Secondary Sources (Waring, 2021) is an effective way to scaffold authentic historical inquiry at the upper …

Elucidation Of Mismatch Repair Regulation By Abl1: Advantages/Disadvantages Of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Treatment, Hannah Daniels Jan 2024

Elucidation Of Mismatch Repair Regulation By Abl1: Advantages/Disadvantages Of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Treatment, Hannah Daniels

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

DNA mismatch repair (MMR) is a critical repair process necessary for not only repairing mispairs incorporated into the DNA during replication, but also for inducing apoptosis in response to certain types of DNA damage. MMR is required for maintaining genomic integrity and due to the importance of this pathway, any impairment of its function can lead to increased mutation frequency, which is well known to be a driving force of cancer development, progression, and resistance. Despite extensive studies involving the proteins involved in the MMR pathway, the regulation of those proteins remains relatively unknown. Regulation of MLH1, a protein necessary …
