The New Eu-Us Data Protection Framework's Implications For Healthcare, Charlotte A. Tschider, Marcelo Corrales Compagnucci, Timo Minssen

Faculty Publications & Other Works

In July 2023, the United States and the European Union introduced the Data Privacy Framework (DPF), introducing the third generation of cross-border data transfer agreements constituting adequacy with respect to personal data transfers under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) between the European Union (EU) and the US. This framework may be used in cross-border healthcare and research relationships, which are highly desirable and increasingly essential to innovative health technology development and health services deployment. A reliable model meeting EU adequacy requirements could enhance the transfer of patient and research participant data. While the DPF might present a familiar terrain …

Program Evaluation Case Study: Infectious Disease Reporting Training Program Evaluation, Emily Sekkath Veedu

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department (LFCHD) has developed an educational program aimed at Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) health and athletics staff members to ensure timely reporting and action in the event of an infectious disease outbreak (4). The program was implemented after a methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) outbreak occurred in a Kentucky community, with a high school football team presenting several of the cases (4). It was noted by a school nurse that many people attending an informational session lacked knowledge regarding infection control, suggesting a need for intervention in this community. I have evaluated this program in the …

Humans Outside The Loop, Charlotte A. Tschider

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not all artificial. Despite the need for high-powered machines that can create complex algorithms and routinely improve them, humans are instrumental in every step used to create AI. From data selection, decisional design, training, testing, and tuning to managing AI’s development as it is used in the human world, humans exert agency and control over the choices and practices underlying AI products. AI is now ubiquitous: it is part of every sector of the economy and many people’s everyday lives. When AI development companies create unsafe products, however, we might be surprised to discover that very …

Hollins University: Living History Project, China Moore

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Hollins Community is a local Virginian African diaspora whose histories are intertwined with the legacy of the Hollins University campus itself. A condition not unique in consideration of the various African diasporic communities within the United States and abroad. How can the legacies of colonialism be addressed in this community? How can healing be prompted in a community whose memories of injustice persist? How can restorative justice persist when the histories of a community were left from published records?

Through the application of practices utilized by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Post-Apartheid South Africa, this thesis seeks actionable …

Defense Against The Dark Arts: The Diversity Rationale And The Failed Affirmative Defense Of Affirmative Action, Sheldon Bernard Lyke Jan 2024

Defense Against The Dark Arts: The Diversity Rationale And The Failed Affirmative Defense Of Affirmative Action, Sheldon Bernard Lyke

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Over the past forty years, affirmative action advocates have participated in a defensive campaign where they have admitted that affirmative action is a form of justified discrimination. This Article finds this a dangerous strategy because it allows for the practice of misguided beliefs about race and remedies for racism. When schools fail to fight the pernicious perception that affirmative action is a racial preference, they allow the bulk of society to participate in the belief that there are no other remedial justifications for affirmative action-like remedying an institution's history of discrimination, or curing a school's present and ongoing discrimination by …

Fighting France: The Unsung Heroes And Forgotten Victims Of Free French Africa In Wwii, Elizabeth Crow Jan 2024

Fighting France: The Unsung Heroes And Forgotten Victims Of Free French Africa In Wwii, Elizabeth Crow

Tenor of Our Times

The efforts of native African efforts against the Vichy France and Nazi regimes go unrecognized in the context of Allied progress in the Second World War. The stories of Fighting France, or General de Gaulle’s forces of Free French Africa, reflect the values fought for throughout the war. Recent research has better shed light on the topic and in deserving of further exploration. Academic efforts have allowed better questions to be asked of Fighting France and the degree to which their participation affects the continent today and global systems at large.

The Great Father Of Washington: Grant’S Indian Policy And The Acquisition Of The Black Hills, Zoie Dean

Tenor of Our Times

Ulysses S. Grant's Indian policy was viewed as one of the many failures of his presidency. However, upon further analysis of the events and circumstances surrounding the acquisition of the Black Hills, it appears that Grant's sentiments toward the Indians were unlike that of any of his constituents. He saw them as human beings. Though his Indian Policy ultimately failed, Grant's call for peace with the Indians was well ahead of its time.
