More Alike Than Not: The Open Access Preferences Of Humanities Scholars, Rachel Scott, Ana Dubnjakovic
Faculty and Staff Publications
Several studies have noted that humanists have not been as quick or enthusiastic in their adoption of Open Access (OA) as their colleagues in other disciplines. This article leverages the Ithaka S+R US 2021 Faculty Survey to provide contextualized analysis of the OA and Open Education Resources (OER) preferences of humanities scholars, as well as some practices related to OA and OER, relative to their colleagues in other disciplines. Findings suggest that although humanists do stand apart in many OA preferences, the small effect sizes render these differences less important than previously suspected. The implications of these findings are considered …

Raising The Bar In Child Welfare Law, Diane M. Sumoski
SMU Law Review
This article explores the unique opportunities arising from child welfare law practice in clinical legal education. While training law students for lawyering in all practice areas, the clinic can also inspire experienced child welfare practitioners to raise the level of their practice. The article provides an overview of the child welfare practice in Texas, the various roles of lawyers in the system, the special training required for these lawyers, and how the lawyers are employed and paid. The article proposes that the clear impact of child welfare legal practice on clients, combined with its interdisciplinary complexity, creates an ideal combination …

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Posters
This capstone experience was about creating an activity enrichment program for the hospital's swing bed program. This program can easily be transferred to other areas as need be but for this experience it was directed towards an inpatient rehab swing bed program. For the creation of the program data collection was used, a total of three assessments were utilized, the SLUMS a cognitive assessment, the geriatric depression scale to measure depression levels, and an activity interest checklist was used to gather information on meaningful activities that those participating enjoyed. Once data collection was finished, a continued literature search was conducted …

Accessible Shores: Promoting Beach Accessibility In Florida, Sara Swartz
Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Posters
This research experience sought to improve beach accessibility for members of the community facing barriers to occupational participation. Beach accessibility is essential for creating meaningful experiences and improving well-being through exposure to blue spaces. Despite its benefits, numerous environmental and systemic barriers hinder individuals with disabilities from safely accessing spaces. To further research this issue and challenges to participation, survey responses from community members of Jacksonville, Florida were gathered and analyzed for common themes. Conversations with professionals in the area allowed for greater insight on available resources and assistive device technology that could improve beach accessibility. To showcase this information …

Multifaceted Challenges And Opportunities: Concurrent Mixed Methods Research To Investigate Chinese Exchange Students' Experiences In The Us Transnational Online Learning Ecology, Xinyue Ren, Yi Zhou
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Transnational online education has become an emerging trend in promoting academic collaboration and exchange in higher education during and after the pandemic. Guided by the learning ecology framework, we conducted concurrent mixed methods research by distributing an online survey to Chinese students (N=51) to collect quantitative and qualitative data. This helped us deeply understand their experiences and perceptions of a cross-cultural online learning environment in the United States. We applied multiple regression and thematic analysis to analyze the data. The merging of both types of data analysis indicated the confirmation of the importance of discipline-based English learning environments, the transformation …

Gendered Orientalism And The Agency Of Syrian, Muslim Women Refugees, Karen Culcasi
Gendered Orientalism And The Agency Of Syrian, Muslim Women Refugees, Karen Culcasi
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Orientalist discourses have long recirculated the idea that Muslim women are oppressed victims of Islam; an idea that has denigrated Muslims and positioned white, Christians as superior. For Muslim women refugees specifically, the gendered orientalist discourse of victimization has reappeared on both sides of the debate on Syrian refugee resettlement in the United States (U.S.) (and other Western states). Within anti-resettlement circles, the narrative of Muslim women as oppressed victims has been leveraged as a reason to stop Syrian refugee resettlement; based on a rationale that their lifestyles and values are incompatible with liberal, Western societies. Pro-resettlement circles, on the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Management of asymptomatic kidney stones is an ongoing debate with follow-up and treatment guidelines based on low-level evidence. Our aim was to evaluate current management of asymptomatic urinary stones.Materials and methods: A 70-question survey was designed in collaboration with European Association of Urology, Young Academic Urologists, Section of Uro-Technology and Section of Urolithiasis groups and distributed. Responders filled out hypothetical scenarios from 2 perspectives, either as treating physicians, or as patients themselves. Results: A total of 212 (40.01%) responses were obtained. Median responder age was 39 years. 75% of responders were interested in “urolithiasis”. 82.5% had never experienced a renal colic, …
The Private Law Of Self-Help, João Marinotti
The Private Law Of Self-Help, João Marinotti
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Individuals regularly take steps to protect themselves, their property, and their broader legal interests. They carry pepper spray, have guard dogs, and install fences. Such measures are colloquially deemed methods of self-help. Yet, despite its ubiquity, self-help as a legal concept has been chronically understudied. Consequently, American private law is missing a doctrinally coherent and prescriptively useful framework for self-help. As a matter of legal theory, this conceptual void is problematic in and of itself; the doctrinal incoherence stemming from this analytical gap decreases the law’s stability and undermines its predictability.
But the concern is not merely theoretical. The magnitude …

A Bioarchaeological Overview Of The Late Woodland Period Gooden Mound Group, Fulton County, Illinois, Aaron M. Durchholz
A Bioarchaeological Overview Of The Late Woodland Period Gooden Mound Group, Fulton County, Illinois, Aaron M. Durchholz
Theses and Dissertations
Extensive research in paleopathology has documented adverse effects accompanying a shift in subsistence strategy from largely nomadic, hunting and gathering lifestyles to those of more sedentary, agrarian systems. Comparative assessment of the human skeletal remains of early foragers and later farmers recovered from archaeological sites around the world have consistently demonstrated a decrease in average age at death in the latter.
Across the pre-Columbian North American Midwest, the transitional period between the Late Woodland and Mississippian periods, sometimes referred to as the terminal or Mississippian Acculturated Late Woodland, portended establishment of semi-permanent to permanent hamlets, increasingly reliant upon the adoption …

An Exploration Of Menopause: Young People's Perceptions Of Women In Menopause (Study 1) And Menopausal Women's Self-Reports Of Their Experiences (Study 2), Fiona Therese Fleming
Theses and Dissertations
Menopause is a transitional phase in a woman’s life, and society is filled with negative stereotypes of women in menopause. Menopause is a difficult period for many women due to hormonal fluctuations, changes in their bodies, and various other health effects. The negative stereotypes of menopause in the media can cause the general public to hold negative perceptions regarding menopausal women (Gannon and Stevens 1998). The purpose of my two-part study was to extend prior research surrounding perceptions of menopause and look specifically at young people’s perceptions of women in menopause, as well as women’s experiences with menopause.

Microaggressions And Their Impact On The Neurodiverse College Experience, Audre J. Knecht
Microaggressions And Their Impact On The Neurodiverse College Experience, Audre J. Knecht
Theses and Dissertations
Previous literature indicates that people with invisible disabilities (including neurodiversity) are at an increased risk of ableist microaggressions, especially on college campuses. Neurodivergent college students (N=13) were interviewed about their college experiences at a midwestern university in the United States. While only a few students reported experiencing microaggressions, there were overall themes of mistreatment from their instructors, watching other students experience microaggressions, feelings of depression, anxiety, and hopelessness, and the desire to mask neurodivergent traits to feel accepted at their university.
It’S Giving Genocide: What Feminist Theory, Indigenous Thought, And Queer Theory Have To Say About Climate Change, Owen George
It’S Giving Genocide: What Feminist Theory, Indigenous Thought, And Queer Theory Have To Say About Climate Change, Owen George
MS in Environmental Studies Master's Theses
Climate change is having profound impacts on communities around the world. In some cases, and with time, more and more, the impacts of climate change are happening on a level that constitutes genocide. Raphaël Lemkin’s and Claudia Card’s definitions of genocide are most applicable to climate change as they have broader understandings of victim groups and social death, and they recognize that inaction to prevent reasonably foreseeable harm constitutes genocidal intent. The UN’s more rigid definition does, to a lesser extent, also apply to climate change. Across the three definitions examined here, the argument of climate change as genocide is …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is one solution for starting a new business in this era due to the difficulties of managing the supply chain, manufacturing processes, and high startup costs. However, the majority of Thai industries operate relying on human labor and basic mechanization, leading to inefficiencies. This paper presents the implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems using Odoo, an open-source ERP software, to address these inefficiencies. This research focuses on implementing the Odoo ERP system on the shop floor of an OEM company, addressing challenges in the planning and production departments. The current business process (As-is process) …

The Influence Of Virtual Anchor Live Streaming On Chinese Consumer Responses, Pik Shan Chan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In the context of China's e-commerce live-streaming industry, this study explores the influence of consumer ethnocentrism (CET) and cosmopolitanism (COS) on perceptions of virtual anchors, using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to examine the effects on perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), and perceived enjoyment (PE), which ultimately shape consumer behavioral responses (CBR). A quantitative survey was conducted with 204 participants who had prior experience watching live streams on Chinese e-commerce platforms. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), the study found that CET positively impacts PU (β=0.766), PEOU (β=0.899), and PE (β=0.511), while COS positively influences PU (β=0.593), PEOU …
