This research reports on the combined effects of heat and mass transfer (HMT) under the influences of the Soret and Dufour in natural convection steady 2D magnetohydrodynamic flow through the boundary layer in a porous vertical tube or duct. The current study is motivated by the significant applications of HMT in engineering processes such as casting and welding. The goal of this framework is to explore the assisting and opposing movements with HMT above a vertical porous channel under the influence of invariant suction and fluid dissipation which have not been reported in the earlier studies. The governing flow equations …

Progress In Physics: Twentieth Year Of Publication, Florentin Smarandache, Andreas Ries, Pierre Millette, Ebenezer Chifu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The journal Progress in Physics was created in January 2005 on behalf of many influential scientists with whom we were in correspondence. The main reason was that publications in other journals were allowed only if the submitter was affiliated with a scientific institution or research organization. Given this situation, many working scientists finding themselves partially employed or unemployed, such as in between research grants, find themselves unable to publish their research results. Even e-print archives such as Cornell’s arXiv required scientific affiliation and still follow this policy.

In development economics literatures, there is a known term for developing countries which tend to mismanage natural resources, that term is called natural resources curse. And two examples which have been discussed quite often is Venezuela and Norway. Here we also discuss other countries as well, including Argentina and a few lessons for Indonesia in choosing the next course of development path, especially with appropriate farming and appropriate renewable energy.

Physics thrives on precision, but paradoxes in set theory reveal limitations in our understanding of well-defined boundaries. Neutrosophic logic, challenging the excluded middle principle, introduces the concept of "betweenness" and partial belonging. This article explores, among other things, what is less known, i.e., Paradoxism emerged as a radical artistic and literary movement in Romania during the late 1980s and continues even today. It arose within the stifling and highly controlled environment of Nicolae Ceaușescu's socialist regime, offering a rebellious outlet and a means to subvert the prevailing ideology. Understanding the Paradoxist Movement necessitates a contextual understanding of the Nicolae Ceaușescu …

Multi-Criteria Group Decision-Making With Electre-Iii Method For Selection Of Female Spouse In Pythagorean Neutrosophic Environment, Rajesh Kumar Saini, Ashik Ahirwar, Florentin Smarandache, Mukesh Kushwaha

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Selecting a female partner in the 21st century is more challenging as compared to the 20th century. The globalized world, changing societal norms, and technology have increased the pool of potential partners, making it harder to find a compatible match. The prevalence of social media and online dating has also changed how people interact, leading to new challenges in establishing genuine connections. This paper presents a novel Multiple-Criteria Group Decision Making (MCGDM) model for selecting a female spouse using the ELECTRE-III method in a Pythagorean neutrosophic environment. The proposed model takes into account multiple criteria and addresses the challenges of …

Where does a sparkling idea come to us, so out of the blue? Divine inspiration? I want a scientific explanation... Maybe, at present, with our current level of science, we are not able to understand the paranormal, or what we think is fantastic, but in fact it is real. A reality that we cannot reach with understanding, because of our low level... Are we not perhaps relevant and do we understand the incomprehensible? Some are connected to the universe better than others, do they have extra senses? How can we “gather” ideas from “air”? How does the spark in the …

In light of the great development witnessed by our contemporary world, it has become necessary to focus on scientific methods and use the quantitative method to reach more accurate decisions, appropriate to the surrounding circumstances and factors. The process of decision-making and choosing the optimal alternative depends on the type and quality of data that describes the issue for which the decision is to be made. Regarding it, in this chapter we present a study of the issue of determining the ideal advertising medium to display a company’s products. This issue is considered one of the issues of decision-making in …

Engaging Impasse: Nurturing A Culture Of Dialogic Engagement On A University Campus, Patricia Ann Hawk Jan 2024

Engaging Impasse: Nurturing A Culture Of Dialogic Engagement On A University Campus, Patricia Ann Hawk

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Universities have historically fostered spaces where students, faculty, staff, and administration can fruitfully engage in discussion around contentious issues. Current political divisions have had a chilling effect on these discussions inside and outside the classroom. To nurture a campus culture of dialogic engagement, the communication studies department in collaboration with the DEI office began a campus dialogue project that invited faculty, staff, students, and administration to participate in monthly dialogues focused on cultural impasse topics. This 5-year project has demonstrated that university communication studies departments can be instrumental in helping community members cross organizational boundaries to engage in challenging dialogues …

The Controversy Of Teaching World Literature And The Importance Of Translation In The Field Of English Studies, Samirah Almutairi

English Faculty Publications

For literary texts to be taught in World Literature courses in the Departments of English Literature, they must be translated into English as a general rule. Some scholars advocate for translating literary texts, and others believe that translation as a methodology does not do justice to these texts. This study aims to lay out the arguments for each position and evaluate them. The significance of this study is to show that World Literature remains an essential field and to highlight the importance of translation. This study questions the modes and purpose of translating literary texts. The result of this study …

Community Building At The Programmatic Level: Arguing For The Implementation Of The Pars Model In A Distance Learning Graduate Program, Julia Romberger Jan 2024

Community Building At The Programmatic Level: Arguing For The Implementation Of The Pars Model In A Distance Learning Graduate Program, Julia Romberger

English Faculty Publications

Distance learning graduate programs in technical communication can work at building community at the programmatic level as well as the course level. This work might be best done by leveraging the position of the faculty member tasked with administering the program, often called the Graduate Program Director. Through the scholarship on community of practice, this article makes a case for the GPD to take on this role and recommends as a starting point the PARS – personal, accessible, responsive, and strategic – framework developed by Borgman and McArdle (2019) for community building in distance learning courses.

The Flesh And Silicon Mesh: A New Materialist Conception Of Advanced Digital Machines, Joshua Nieubuurt Jan 2024

The Flesh And Silicon Mesh: A New Materialist Conception Of Advanced Digital Machines, Joshua Nieubuurt

English Faculty Publications

Digital machines, including artificial intelligence (AI), have long been held as potential agents of social change. From their binary role in cultural productions to the real-world implementation of such, digital machines have typically been considered within the Heideggerian “readiness-to-hand” category of Being. This paper seeks to alter conceptually this dynamic through the use of new materialism and Morton’s concept of the “mesh” to provide a new understanding of the social and pragmatic roles advanced digital machines play in ecologies in which they dwell and continue to emerge. Through briefly tracing the complex intermingling of advanced digital machines in the realms …

Introduction: Autoimmunities In The Wake Of Covid-19, Travis Alexander, Nishant Shahani

English Faculty Publications

Our introduction and the essays collected in this Special Section address themselves to the ruins, creations, and legacies of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. More precisely, we ask how our notions of immunity and especially autoimmunity have changed over the last three years. We theorize autoimmunity in the wake of COVID-19 through approaches that consider the material and experiential phenomenology proliferated by the longue durée of both the experience of COVID-19 infection and the pandemic itself. In this way, we connect our inquiries both to the history of recent epidemics—most notably HIV/AIDS—and to broader philosophical and cultural investigations of what immunity …

[Introduction] When I was an undergraduate student, I dreamed of being a badass scholar-activist like Angela Davis the way that young kids dream of being a princess or a dragon. As a baby feminist and scholar, I admired Dr. Davis for her powerful writing and speaking on Black feminism and class struggle, and her impeccable style. When I decided to apply to graduate school, I did so with Angela Davis in mind, imagining a future career where I meandered in a labyrinth of books one day and shut down the streets in a protest the next.

This article explores the history of integrated college basketball in the United States, with a focus on the Virginia Union Panthers. The Panthers, known as the "Dream Team," broke the color barrier in college basketball in the 1930s and 1940s. The article also discusses the 1992 U.S. Men's Olympic Basketball Team, known as the "Dream Team," and its impact on race relations. It argues that the original Dream Team was actually the Virginia Union Panthers, who symbolized the defeat of white supremacy through athletic achievement. The article highlights the challenges faced by historically black college sports, such as lack of …

CCRD Research Report

School Experiences Of Young Adults Since The Passing Of "Don't Say Gay", Heather M. Summers Jan 2024

School Experiences Of Young Adults Since The Passing Of "Don't Say Gay", Heather M. Summers

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

As of 2020, the US is home to an estimated over nine percent of youth 13-17 who identify as LGBTQ+ (Conron, 2020). There are hundreds of bills that have been passed into laws that restrict rights for LGBTQ+ individuals (Union, Mapping attacks on LGBTQ rights in US state legislatures in 2024, 2024). With risk factors specific to youth and with legislation altering the operation of schools, there is concern regarding the effect of such laws on students (Day, 2019). This dissertation provides an overview of how LGBTQ+ youth in schools have experienced the implementation of laws that emerged between 2022 …

Identifying The Origins Of Business’ Data Breaches Utilizing Covert Timing Channels, Gayle L. Frisbie Jan 2024

Identifying The Origins Of Business’ Data Breaches Utilizing Covert Timing Channels, Gayle L. Frisbie

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Cybersecurity events and data breaches are on the rise and are very costly to businesses. Businesses rely on connectivity and information systems to conduct business, yet those same information systems can be breached and the organization's data exposed. Today, there is a heavy reliance of organizations upon network connections to connect the entire organization in order to conduct business efficiently and from multiple locations. Covert timing channels are a cybersecurity attack method in which malicious actors embed privileged information into normal network traffic without authorization. Malicious actors, by carefully manipulating timing patterns in covert timing channels, can create a hidden …

Self-Transformation And Spirituality In Marketing, Mrudul Nilangekar Jan 2024

Self-Transformation And Spirituality In Marketing, Mrudul Nilangekar

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Self-transformation and spirituality have not been extensively investigated in marketing research. However, these concepts are deeply impactful in an individual's life and are advocated by religious and spiritual traditions across the world. In Essay 1, I extend research on compassion, distance between self and other, and power by examining the effect of self-compassion on prosocial behavior. I test the effect of self-compassion on prosocial behavior mediated by the distance felt between self and other and moderated by felt power. Across five studies, I find that individuals in the self-compassionate and equal power mindset display higher prosocial behavior and lower empathy …

When School Was Not Designed For Your Family: A Culturally Responsive High School Parent Engagement Guide, Julia Straszewski Jan 2024

When School Was Not Designed For Your Family: A Culturally Responsive High School Parent Engagement Guide, Julia Straszewski

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Beginning with a brief historical analysis of how the education system came to be and an analysis of culture, themes came forth demonstrating the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) roots of education no longer align with the diversity of society. Parental engagement in education has been veered as a pillar of overall success; however, it was consistently view through a nonculturally responsive lens and geared toward early childhood and elementary education, leaving out high school as an equally important facet of a child’s development. Synthesizing the themes of cultural responsiveness, parental engagement, and positive relationships, a culturally responsive guide emerges to …

Data In Distress: Effectuating State Data Privacy Laws During Bankruptcy, Cameron Love Jan 2024

Data In Distress: Effectuating State Data Privacy Laws During Bankruptcy, Cameron Love

Emory Law Journal

In 2000, an online toy retailer, Toysmart.com, attempted to liquidate consumer data to pay creditors in its bankruptcy case. The attempted sale drew objections from the Federal Trade Commission and forty-seven state attorneys general. Five years later, Congress attempted to resolve privacy concerns in bankruptcy, amending the Bankruptcy Code to provide clear procedures for the liquidation of “personally identifiable information.” Recently, scholars have criticized these amendments, characterizing them as “limited,” “outdated,” and “privacy theater.” This Comment adds to these criticisms, arguing the amendments’ failure to mandate consideration of relevant nonbankruptcy law puts these permissive sales procedures on a collision course …

Playing Fair, Paying Fair: A Comprehensive Federal Scheme For The Regulation Of Collectives And The Student-Athlete Name, Image, And Likeness Market, Josh Blackman

Emory Law Journal

College athletics have transformed with the advent of new name, image, and likeness (NIL) policies, permitting student-athletes to earn compensation in exchange for the use of their NILs. This development was driven by a series of court decisions, ultimately constraining the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) authority and capacity to enforce its compensation-prohibiting rules. State legislatures have adopted NIL laws in an effort to obtain competitive advantages for in-state educational institutions (“institutions”), resulting in a patchwork of NIL regulations across the United States. In the midst of this varied NIL regulatory landscape, the NCAA is ill-equipped to enforce NIL rules, …

The Right To Know: Putting Public Health And Safety Above Trade Secret Protections, Maranda L. Johnston Jan 2024

The Right To Know: Putting Public Health And Safety Above Trade Secret Protections, Maranda L. Johnston

Emory Law Journal

Trade secret protection is granted by the government to provide entities with an actionable right against the theft and misuse of their secrets. The government provides this protection to compensate for wrongful acts of competitors. However, the lack of checks on trade secret protections has instead provided a pathway for private entities to hide harmful information from the public.

From water usage in a drought area to using toxic chemicals for fracking, there are countless examples of trade secret abuses. While not every use of trade secret protection is malicious, awarding unchecked trade secret protection can still have grave consequences. …

Nudging Diversity: Merging Law And Behavioral Science To Reduce Workplace Discrimination And Increase Diversity, Leora F. Eisenstadt, Todd Haugh Jan 2024

Nudging Diversity: Merging Law And Behavioral Science To Reduce Workplace Discrimination And Increase Diversity, Leora F. Eisenstadt, Todd Haugh

Emory Law Journal

Today’s employers find themselves in a complicated bind when it comes to workplace diversity and antidiscrimination initiatives. On one side is the lasting confluence of the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements, which rightly caused many organizations to reevaluate and reinvigorate their diversity and inclusion efforts. On the other side is employment law’s increasing inability to support such efforts. As workplace discrimination has moved from overt, intentional manifestations of prejudice to unconscious bias and structural discrimination, traditional employment law solutions have become less effective. The Supreme Court’s recent affirmative action decision striking down virtually all race-based considerations in college admissions—and …

Mass Accommodations: Signposts To A Hidden Jurisprudence, Shirley Lin

Emory Law Journal

In the early years of COVID-19, our willingness to swiftly modify workplaces, classrooms, and other commons generated access at unprecedented scale. These de facto accommodations belied conventional thought about whether institutions can dismantle environments, structures, and practices known to exclude or harm. Decision-makers nationwide improvised under traditional disability law—even if unevenly—generating mass accommodations that represented tens of millions of people problem-solving, experiencing structural access and safety, and intensively collaborating on organizational design over a concerted period. This Article’s argument is two-fold. First, by applying an experiential analysis, legal and non-legal audiences may understand them as disability-informed phenomena that spanned diverse …

Shareholder Direct Democracy, Geeyoung Min Jan 2024

Shareholder Direct Democracy, Geeyoung Min

Emory Law Journal

This Article explores the ongoing tension between what shareholders want and what corporate management perceives as beneficial for the shareholders. Beyond the fundamental right to elect directors, federal regulation enables shareholders to engage directly with management on various issues by adding their proposals to a proxy ballot for shareholder voting. However, this unique form of shareholder direct democracy has transformed into a fierce battleground between shareholders and management, as exemplified in ExxonMobil’s litigation against its shareholders to block their proposal. Why do many companies emphasize their efforts to engage with shareholders yet resist shareholder proposals?

This Article argues that companies’ …

“I’M Jackson Wang From China”: Global Celebrities As China’S Messengers Of Nationalism, Keira Vogel

Araneum: Richmond Journal of American & Global Affairs

This paper examines the rise of nationalist expressions among globally recognized Chinese celebrities, such as Jackson Wang, Fan Bingbing, and Jackie Chan. Global Chinese celebrities, defined here as individuals born in China who have risen to international prominence, used to appear generally apolitical in the public eye, but can now more often be observed expressing nationalism, despite having access to uncensored information about the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In this paper, nationalism refers to expressions of pride in one’s nation, often linked to support for the government and its policies. Here, the term carries a less negative connotation than it …

The Hindu Mahasabha: How Humanitarian Relief Became An Agent Of Hindu Nationalism, Sanjna Kaul Jan 2024

The Hindu Mahasabha: How Humanitarian Relief Became An Agent Of Hindu Nationalism, Sanjna Kaul

Araneum: Richmond Journal of American & Global Affairs

Humanitarianism is deeply linked with the politics of religion, and in South Asia, it has played a vital role in the spread of Hindu nationalism. Prior to British colonialism, South Asian humanitarianism was guided by spiritual traditions of service and duty, and relief typically took the form of religious donations. The only audience of those small-scale humanitarian actions were the giver’s interpersonal community and the gods. However, with the shift to British rule, humanitarian work in the Indian subcontinent became located within the state and donned broader political motivations. Once the audience of humanitarianism also included the ruling British state, …

Assessing Disparities In Culturally Competent Care In Ethnic Burn Patients, Min Kang Jan 2024

Assessing Disparities In Culturally Competent Care In Ethnic Burn Patients, Min Kang

Nursing | Student Research Posters

One of the most debilitating injuries one can suffer is a burn. It is even worse when certain individuals can not access the high quality care such as immigrants. With immigration rates increasing over the last several decades, these populations often lack the proper medical care that they deserve. The overarching theme in this population is that they face challenges in attaining positive patient outcomes due to cultural differences.

  • Lack of Culturally Competent Care in Burn Care
  • Addressing Cultural Safety and Quality of Care in Burn Injury Management
  • Analyzing Disparities in Access to Culturally Competent Burn care
