A Comparative Analysis Of The American Revolution And The Jacobite Rebellions As “Civil Conflicts” Against Great Britain, Mandi Nash Jan 2024

A Comparative Analysis Of The American Revolution And The Jacobite Rebellions As “Civil Conflicts” Against Great Britain, Mandi Nash

Theses

British history consists of a large number of armed conflicts engaged against almost every country and continent in the world. While British history has a history rich with conflicts, two particular conflicts feature front and center when one is thinking in terms of a civil conflict– the American Revolution and the Jacobite Rebellions. A civil conflict is any conflict that takes place between citizens of the same country. Both the Jacobite Rebellions and the American Revolution were conflicts against Great Britain when Scotland and America were under British rule. Despite being two separate civil conflicts that differed in many ways, …

This manifesto critically examines the unfolding integration of Generative AI (GenAI), chatbots, and algorithms into higher education, using a collective and thoughtful approach to navigate the future of teaching and learning. GenAI, while celebrated for its potential to personalize learning, enhance efficiency, and expand educational accessibility, is far from a neutral tool. Algorithms now shape human interaction, communication, and content creation, raising profound questions about human agency and biases and values embedded in their designs. As GenAI continues to evolve, we face critical challenges in maintaining human oversight, safeguarding equity, and facilitating meaningful, authentic learning experiences. This manifesto emphasizes that …

Underuse Of Pragmatic Markers Among Non-Native English Speakers: Causes And Suggestions For Interventions, Arwa Abdullah S. Alqahtani

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Pragmatic markers (PMs)—those optional markers used in conversations to facilitate communication—have been gaining attention among researchers in the field of pragmatics in the past three decades or so. Proper use of PMs contributes to the success of any interaction in real-life conversations. However, they are often underused by non-native English speakers (NNSs). This paper critically reviews the existing research literature to investigate the causes of the underuse of PMs among NNSs, focusing on linguistic and extralinguistic factors that might contribute to the limited use of PMs. The findings of this study show that the distinctive nature of pragmatic development in …

Retracing Their Tracks: The Rediscovery And Memorialization Efforts Of The National Orphan Train Project, Joanna Lockwood Jan 2024

Retracing Their Tracks: The Rediscovery And Memorialization Efforts Of The National Orphan Train Project, Joanna Lockwood

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Between 1854 and 1929, the placement system that became known as the orphan trains in modern scholarship, removed neglected and orphaned children from the dangerous streets of New York City and attempted to place them into homes across America that would benefit their futures. While this charity-run program was well-intentioned, the estimated two hundred fifty thousand children of the orphan trains experienced a mix of encounters upon their placements. Although many homes provided a caring environment for these children, others did not. After years of struggle during their early childhood, numerous children had not only lost their parents and were …

Bacterial Metallophores As Potential Agents In Heavy Metal Bioremediation, Mohammed Ahmed Jan 2024

Bacterial Metallophores As Potential Agents In Heavy Metal Bioremediation, Mohammed Ahmed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heavy metal pollution is a significant threat to human health and the environment. Bacteria have evolved diverse mechanisms to adapt to these pollutants, including the secretion of small molecules called metallophores. Bacterial metallophores are metabolites excreted in response to toxic metal stress to protect the bacterial cell. These small molecules have shown versatility in potential applications for the remediation of heavy metals. This research focuses on constructing a library of bacterial metallophores, which will facilitate the assessment of their metal-binding properties when exposed to different metals. The study has two main areas of investigation: Firstly, it involves isolating and characterizing …

Language Variation: Arabic Dialects In Madinah, Saudi Arabia, Arwa Alsindy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Arabic sociolinguistics, namely Arabic dialectology, is a demanding area of study. Therefore, the current research was conducted to fulfill some of those needs. Qualitative methods were applied in order to answer the research questions: What are the salient linguistic features of the Hijazi Hadari dialect, Urban Bedouins Hijazi dialect, and the emerging Saudi Arabic White dialect in Madinah? When are these dialects used? What changes or accommodations are made to these dialects when communicating with the other social groups? To provide answers to those questions, observations and interviews were applied. By applying the SPEAKING model (Hymes, 1974), six participants (three …

Astrocytic Mitochondrial Transfer To Brain Endothelial Cells And Pericytes In Vivo Increases With Aging, Gopal V. Velmurugan, Hemendra J. Vekaria, Samir P. Patel, Patrick G. Sullivan, W. Brad Hubbard

Neurology Faculty Publications

Intercellular mitochondrial transfer (IMT) is an intriguing biological phenomenon where mitochondria are transferred between different cells and notably, cell types. IMT is physiological, occurring in normal conditions, but also is utilized to deliver healthy mitochondria to cells in distress. Transferred mitochondria can be integrated to improve cellular metabolism, and mitochondrial function. Research on the mitochondrial transfer axis between astrocytes and brain capillaries in vivo is limited by the cellular heterogeneity of the neurovascular unit. To this end, we developed an inducible mouse model that expresses mitochondrial Dendra2 only in astrocytes and then isolated brain capillaries to remove all intact astrocytes. …

Research on the cerebrovasculature may provide insights into brain health and disease. Immunohistochemical staining is one way to visualize blood vessels, and digital pathology has the potential to revolutionize the measurement of blood vessel parameters. These tools provide opportunities for translational mouse model research. However, mouse brain tissue presents a formidable set of technical challenges, including potentially high background staining and crossreactivity of endogenous IgG. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) and fixed frozen sections, both of which are widely used, may require different methods. In this study, we optimized blood vessel staining in mouse brain tissue, testing both FFPE and frozen fixed …

Ruling In The Shadows: Analysis Of The Supreme Court’S Use Of The ‘Shadow Docket’ And Its Effects, Emilee Smart Jan 2024

Ruling In The Shadows: Analysis Of The Supreme Court’S Use Of The ‘Shadow Docket’ And Its Effects, Emilee Smart

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

The recent increased use of the shadow docket has left the public and scholars with unanswered questions about how procedures influence outcomes and behavior. Many of these shadow docket cases have been petitioned to the justices as emergencies in very important policy areas such as immigration, abortion, elections, and transgender rights. I collect a large dataset of all outcomes of the Supreme Court's shadow docket from 2010-2022. I examine the language the justices use to justify their decisions made using alternate procedures. I find unique differences in the justifying behavior of the justices as well as significant differences in the …

Public Justice: Analyzing The Interactions Of Supreme Court Justices With The American Public, Abbie Wood Jan 2024

Public Justice: Analyzing The Interactions Of Supreme Court Justices With The American Public, Abbie Wood

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

When and how do Supreme Court justices choose to interact with the public? What motivating factors spur a justice to make a public appearance? In the fields of political science, public law, and legal studies, research has overwhelmingly studied on-the-bench behavior. Scholars have analyzed judicial voting patterns, opinion writing, oral arguments, and more. Despite the prevalence and importance of non-decision making activities as well as the growing reporting by media outlets concerning justices' public appearances, there remains a lack of attention devoted to exploring how justices behave off-the-bench. In this dissertation, I seek to develop this neglected area within judicial …

Mallory V. Norfolk Southern Railway Co., Due Process And Strange Bedfellows, Michael Vitiello, Daniel Croxall

Missouri Law Review

[As the 2022 Supreme Court term waned, the press and public waited with trepidation or excitement for noteworthy cases that addressed important policy questions, including affirmative action, student loan forgiveness, and conflicts between religious freedom and gay rights. Fewer people shared the concerns of Civil Procedure scholars who anxiously awaited the Court’s decision in Mallory v. Norfolk Southern Railway Co. For over a decade, the Court found that states violated due process in asserting personal jurisdiction over various defendants despite the lack of any meaningful burden on the defendant’s ability to defend against claims in the plaintiff’s choice of forum. …

Wanted!: Fourth Amendment Protection For St. Louis Residents From The Unconstitutional Wanteds System, Brooke Buerck Jan 2024

Wanted!: Fourth Amendment Protection For St. Louis Residents From The Unconstitutional Wanteds System, Brooke Buerck

Missouri Law Review

Back in the days of Jesse James, Billy the Kid, and Butch Cassidy, wanted posters were plastered all around town: “Wanted! $5,000 Reward!” Law enforcement agencies still utilize wanted posters today, but they appear more commonly on the internet or in the media rather than in classic paper form with bold lettering and a black-and-white portrait of the suspect that is associated with Western films. The purpose of such wanted “posters” or other similar investigatory tools is to facilitate capture by involving the public and communicate the agency’s priorities by showing the public which individuals and crimes are a top …

Highspeed Pursuit Of A Claim For Negligence: Analyzing Police Liability In A Vehicular Accident Involving Bystanders, Harry Bell Iii Jan 2024

Highspeed Pursuit Of A Claim For Negligence: Analyzing Police Liability In A Vehicular Accident Involving Bystanders, Harry Bell Iii

Missouri Law Review

Between 1994 and 2002, 3,146 people died as a result of highspeed police pursuits. Many of these decedents were pedestrians, bicyclists, or occupants of an uninvolved vehicle. In fact, statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”) indicate that bystander fatalities make up approximately 42% of total fatalities resulting from highspeed pursuits by law enforcement. Deaths related to these pursuits may be even greater than the statistics suggest due to underreporting on the matter. How is fault attributed when a highspeed police pursuit harms an innocent bystander? Can a court attribute liability to law enforcement? Are there legal remedies available …

The Intentional Pursuit Of Purpose: Nurturing Students’ Authentic Motivation For Practicing Law, Katya S. Cronin

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

“Why do you want to pursue a career in the law?” Nearly every aspiring attorney answers this question as part of their law school application personal statement. They pour their hopes, dreams, and challenges into the answer to this question—their formative struggles, deeply held values, and resolve to make the world a better place as legal practitioners. Soon after starting law school, however, law students turn their attention from core aspirations to immediate concerns. Forgotten and slowly choked by the thorns of competition, prestige, and external validation, law students’ internal sense of self and purpose begin to wither away until, …

Regulating Producers By Randomizing Consumers, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2024

Regulating Producers By Randomizing Consumers, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Consumer law aims to empower consumers with accurate information and to protect them from misinformation. For complex goods and services, however, mandated disclosure laws and other consumer law tools have had only limited success in helping consumers project their satisfaction and costs. Market responses, such as ratings, have limitations that have prevented them from compensating adequately for consumer law’s shortcomings. This Article describes how regulators could improve measurements of quality and cost by borrowing a tool from drug law: randomization. In designated markets, consumers who accept an incentive to volunteer would be randomized among two or more choices, and the …

Mandated Reporting And The Legal Educator's Duty, Cori Alonso-Yoder, Eve Rips Jan 2024

Mandated Reporting And The Legal Educator's Duty, Cori Alonso-Yoder, Eve Rips

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

As lawyers and educators, law teachers often navigate systems that have failed to account for the needs of the communities that are subject to regulation. These same systems generally fail to appreciate the hybrid role exercised by lawyers who face competing demands as educators. A key example is the tension that exists for legal educators who engage students in clinical and other forms of experiential learning where questions of abuse or maltreatment of vulnerable community members may trigger mandated reporting to government officials. These laws can place legal faculty in the fraught position of needing to reconcile statutory reporting mandates, …

Changes In Primary Care Availability In Appalachia, Whitney Beckett

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was a groundbreaking moment in the United States healthcare system. It affected many different aspects of the system, including access to primary care professionals. Primary care professionals provide a key role in American’s health, especially when it comes to preventative care. With one-third of Americans experiencing barriers to such access, a solution is desperately needed to increase said access. These barriers are especially profound in low-income, underserved areas such as the Appalachian regions of Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The ACA attempted to increase access via Medicaid expansion; however, not all States expanded their …

Improving Black Maternal Outcomes In Christian County, Ky: A Social Marketing Approach To Perinatal Provider Change, Ariel A. Arthur Jan 2024

Improving Black Maternal Outcomes In Christian County, Ky: A Social Marketing Approach To Perinatal Provider Change, Ariel A. Arthur

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Compared to other states in the country, Kentucky has historically poor population health outcomes. While the statewide maternal mortality rate is 16.1 per 100,000 live births, this statistic belies the stark racial disparities that exist. In 2018, the pregnancy-related death rate for Black women was 40.2 per 100,000 live births compared to 13.1 for White women. This pattern is persistent even after controlling for socioeconomic status, prenatal care, and other protective factors. Research shows that institutional and interpersonal racism when receiving obstetric care contributes to poor childbirth and postpartum outcomes for Black women. Additionally, geography and rural status may compound …
