9 Days In Deutschland, Qinza Malik Khan

Research Days Posters 2024

9 Days in Deutschland is a documentary style memoir based on my trip to Germany where I drifted my way through 9 different cities, towns and villages. During this trip I took photos with no goal in mind and ended up with over 5,000 digital photos and 12 rolls of film. What started as a photo book quickly matured into a memoir where the writing became as important as the visuals, creating a symbiotic structure. Through this format I reflected on history, war, photography, film, sexual violence against women during war, the Holocaust, propaganda, truth, trauma, time, loss, loneliness, and …

Green Infrastructure: The Limits And Restrictions Concerning Previous Floods, Vincent Mcloughlin

Research Days Posters 2024

Green infrastructure has been seen recently in the media as a “cure-all” to flood relief, prevention, and air quality and opening jobs for many people. However, its high installation costs and its small water storage capacity question its effectiveness. This paper will highlight the limitations of green infrastructure in the context of past floods, more specifically the floods in Binghamton in 2006 and 2011, as well as the 2023 flooding in New York City as a result of tropical storms. Even with the implementation of green infrastructure in areas, floods can still cause significant damage, raising questions about the efficiency …

Diversifying The Archival Record Through Community Archiving, Natalie Pan

Research Days Posters 2024

Archives have long ostracized marginalized communities, owing to their lack of representation in mainstream archiving. In turn, communities have opted to create their own archives that become the catalyst for more dialogue surrounding their histories, called community archives. This study looks at how other universities have partnered with their local communities to document richer local histories that help maintain partnerships between the two. Conversing with other community archivists helps to realize the process of making a community archive in their respective institutions, which furthers the relationships between the university and local communities and institutions. By generating important dialogues that concern …

From Southern Roots To Northern Soil: Unearthing The Ku Klux Klan’S Presence On Long Island In The 1920s, Jacob Schlatner

Research Days Posters 2024

The Ku Klux Klan is notorious for its terror and violence against Blacks in the 19th century and during the Civil Rights Era. Between these periods, a “second generation” Klan emerged and transformed into a social movement in part by leveraging mainstream media and propaganda to push xenophobia and ultra-nationalism throughout the country. While many scholars have written about the Klan of the 1920s, its significant presence on Long Island during that period has not been explored. Using historic newspaper databases and first-hand accounts from Klansmen themselves, this research will explore how the Klan gained a following of over 20,000 …

Therapy Talk On Therapytok: Psychotherapeutic Discourse On Social Media, Catherine Marin Jan 2024

Therapy Talk On Therapytok: Psychotherapeutic Discourse On Social Media, Catherine Marin

Research Days Posters 2024

Therapy-talk is a discursive framework which subtends modern conceptions of mental healthcare. Normatively, this takes place within the spatiotemporal moment of the therapy session, a clinical environment in which the therapist occupies an authority role and administers treatment to their patient. However, the Unites States faces an ongoing mental health crisis which is magnified by racialized and class-based disparities in access to treatment. This has led to the proliferation of non-normative and often digital approaches to treatment. One such approach involves the development of mental health communities on various social media platforms. On TikTok, this community is sometimes called TherapyTok, …

On Grooming: Fostering Selective Empathy Through Language In American Conservative Media, Alexander Jordan Jan 2024

On Grooming: Fostering Selective Empathy Through Language In American Conservative Media, Alexander Jordan

Research Days Posters 2024

The contemporary landscape of American conservative politics is one largely marred by visceral appeals to emotion. Phrases such as “grooming” have become a staple of modern conservative media, capable of evoking strong negative emotions and falsely portraying groups such as non-LGBT individuals, white individuals, Christians, and especially children as under threat. This research seeks to explore the evolution of how this language has been utilized to create a sense of “selective empathy” in American conservatives, with particular emphasis on the cultural shift surrounding the 2016 presidential election. Through analysis of the works of multiple conservative figures, think tanks, and media …

Research Days Posters 2024

Food insecurity (FI) affects nearly 800 million globally. This study investigated the underexplored relationships between FI, health-promoting activities (HPAs), and perceived stress. An anonymous online survey was administered and results were analyzed using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient in SPSS Version 28.0. FI was negatively correlated with completing health care tasks (r= -0.136, p < 0.01), engaging in social activities both active (r=-0.213, p < 0.01) and not (r=-0.146, p < 0.01), and confidence coping with problems (r=-0.233, p < 0.01). FI was positively correlated with perceived stress (r=0.155, p < 0.01). These findings align with prior research and discuss possible mediation through stress mindset interventions and education of nutrition beyond Westernized diets. This study gives insights into the dynamics between FI, HPAs, and perceived stress, laying the groundwork for more robust longitudinal research to create a comprehensive understanding of FI relationships.

Why Do We Delight In Celebrity Misfortune?, Caitlin Chan

Research Days Posters 2024

Whereas most people sympathize with others' pain, empathetic response can be muted towards celebrities. We may also experience more schadenfreude, or joy in others’ misery, for celebrities than with people we know personally. This project explores multiple factors, including celebrity obsessive disorder (COD), theories of schadenfreude, and gender bias. Schadenfreude tells us about how we fantasize about others and live through their lives, however, we take pleasure in their downfall because of their lifestyle. It reflects on us because then we also see how this person is living this fantasy life and we delight in their misfortune because of envy …

The Impact Of Food Insecurity And Diet On Intensity Of Physical Activity, Danielle Crivelli, Katerina Nagorny, Sarah Livshits, Alexis Valerius, Elliot Ifraimov, Sabrina Bubis, Gabrielle Castillo, Ushima Chowdhury

Research Days Posters 2024

Food insecurity is a pressing issue among the college population, leading to poor diet quality and increased stress. However, research on the relationship between food insecurity and physical activity is limited. To study this relationship, an anonymous online survey was distributed using social media platforms. The survey included questions regarding food insecurity, physical activity, and diet quality. Data were analyzed using Pearson Correlation Coefficient in SPSS Version 28.0. Food insecurity was negatively correlated with the number of days spent doing physical activity (r = -0.164, p < 0.01). The number of days spent exercising was positively correlated with consuming dark leafy vegetables (r = 0.229, p<0.01). These findings suggest that students experiencing food insecurity are less likely to participate in physical activity, and those participating in more physical activity have better diet quality. Hence, decreasing food insecurity among college students may promote overall health and wellbeing.

Looking For Love On A Chilly Night: The Colorado Brown Tarantula Mating Season, Dallas Haselhuhn

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Aphonopelma hentzi is the most widespread and abundant tarantula species in the United States. While a distinct mating season is observed, it has not been well studied and the environmental drivers for the mating season are unknown. By conducting daily surveys on a peripheral population within Southeast Colorado, between August and November 2022, I found that after the first significant temperature drop, the number of mate-seeking males was significantly higher than prior to this temperature event. Mate-seeking males were significantly correlated with a drop in the water vapor pressure gradient, a rarely used biological metric for assessing potential water loss …

Assessment Of The Ecological Integrity Of Two Wetland Sites Within Eastern Michigan University’S Fish Lake Environmental Education Center (Fleec), Brianna Rice

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Wetland ecosystems function as reservoirs of biodiversity for both terrestrial and aquatic organisms, and are among the most vulnerable ecosystems to degradation. The ecological integrity of two wetlands at Eastern Michigan University’s Fish Lake Environmental Education Center, a bog and one vernal pool, was assessed. Plant species richness was used to conduct Floristic Quality Assessments (FQA) using the coefficient of conservatism and wetland indicator status for each species. The Michigan Rapid Assessment Method (MiRAM) was conducted as a more comprehensive assessment of each ecosystem. The bog had an FQA of 31.6 and a MiRAM: 81/100, representing high-quality wetland conditions. The …
