What Goes Around Comes Around

Climate change is a prevalent issue affecting every individual globally. There are many factors that increase of greenhouse gases, including textile waste. Textiles can have an extended lifetime, but are often discarded once unwanted or outgrown. One solution to mitigate the negative global impacts of textiles is to apply the circular economy and reuse clothing. Our project not only focuses on defining the circular economy and its implementation, but also highlights waste management, campus sustainability, and education awareness. This project aims to discover how the University of Montana can implement the circular economy in its …

Assessing American Attitudes: Welfare And Redistribution Preferences Over Time By Race, Gender, And Education, Liliana Silver Jan 2024

Assessing American Attitudes: Welfare And Redistribution Preferences Over Time By Race, Gender, And Education, Liliana Silver

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Income and wealth inequality in the United States have skyrocketed since the 1970s, making the country increasingly unequal (Ashok et al. 2015; Hout 2021; Lee 2023). Researchers disagree on whether overall support for redistribution in the United States has changed in the last several decades (Ashok et al. 2015; Lee 2023; Pittau et al. 2016) but recent studies suggest the country has seen a significant political realignment based on race and education, influencing support for redistribution (Kitschelt and Rehm 2019). Much of the literature on redistributive attitudes exists in political science or economics and/or explores fewer dependent variables of race, …

Not Enough Of Us, Christelle M. Alce Jan 2024

Not Enough Of Us, Christelle M. Alce

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Together we are diving into the pressing issue of the underrepresentation of African American teachers within the contemporary educational landscape, recognizing it as a critical concern deeply rooted in systemic inequalities. As an African American female educator, I bring a personal and scholarly perspective to this thesis, driven by a commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments and addressing longstanding disparities within the teaching profession. Central to my investigation is the recognition that the scarcity of African American educators not only deprives students of diverse role models but also diminishes the quality of education by overlooking unique perspectives and cultural nuances …

The Effect Of A Tailored Educational Flyer On Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Rural Residents: Lessons Learned From A Pilot Randomized Trial, Jungyoon Kim, Cheryl Beseler, Melissa Leypoldt, Roma Subramanian, Tamara Robinson, Karen Funkenbusch, Jason Foster, Susan Harris, Aaron Yoder, Emma Hymel, Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

Background/Objectives: Stool-based tests, such as the fecal immunochemical test (FIT), have been widely used for increasing colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. Small media, such as printed materials or flyers, are known to be an effective intervention to increase CRC screening by fecal tests. However, more evidence is needed to determine whether such small media are effective in improving screening uptake of a mailed FIT intervention targeted at rural populations in the USA.

Methods: In this randomized study, 1230 FIT kits were mailed from July to December 2022 to rural Nebraskans aged 45-74 who were not up to date on …

Educational Attainment: American Indians/Alaska Natives Phenomenological Study Of A Northeast Nebraska Indian Reservation, Stacy Brasch

Dissertations and Theses

This phenomenological study explored the perspectives of American Indian/Alaska Native students who had all graduated from the same Northeast-Nebraska public school located on a federally recognized Indian reservation and completed at least a four-year degree. To that end, the central research question addressed by this dissertation is, “Why were these individuals successful in their educational attainment pursuits when so many of their contemporaries were not?” The two sub-research questions were (1) What supports do American Indian/Alaska Native graduates perceive as having helped to ensure their resilience and successful educational attainment? And (2) What challenges do American Indian/Alaska Native students identify …

From Biology Major To Religion Professor: Personal Reflections On Evolution, Joshua M. Sears Jan 2024

From Biology Major To Religion Professor: Personal Reflections On Evolution, Joshua M. Sears

BYU Studies

When I arrived at Brigham Young University as an excited freshman, my plan was to major in biology. I had really enjoyed biology in high school and scored a perfect 5 on the AP exam, so I figured this was something I could be good at. That first year I took courses in general biology, biodiversity, chemistry, and physical science.

Translation And The World Order, Richard Lyman Bushman Jan 2024

Translation And The World Order, Richard Lyman Bushman

BYU Studies

Joseph Smith published three books he called translations: his masterwork, the Book of Mormon, translated from gold plates when he was twenty-four and published in March 1830; the eight chapters of the book of Moses based on Genesis in the Bible, begun in June 1830 and completed by February of the following year; and the book of Abraham, translated from scrolls that the Church purchased from Michael Chandler in 1835 and published in 1842. It is hard to think of any prophetic figure in religious history who relied as extensively on translations to spread his message as did Joseph Smith.

Tasting God’S Light: Saints And The Spiritual Senses, Philip Abbott Jan 2024

Tasting God’S Light: Saints And The Spiritual Senses, Philip Abbott

BYU Studies

While many Westerners once assumed that sensory perception is more or less constant and universal, scholarship in the area of sensory studies has shown how volatile and diverse sensory discernment can be. For instance, though Western epistemology categorizes sensory knowledge into five senses, people across world cultures do not agree on the number of human senses that exist (some enumerate two, four, six, or seven senses), nor do they agree on how the senses function. As anthropologists have illuminated, these various notions of sensory perception lead people to translate sensory experience into vastly different worldviews. Thus, researchers have concluded that …

Are Latter-Day Saints Perfectionists? Guest Editor’S Introduction, W. Justin Dyer Jan 2024

Are Latter-Day Saints Perfectionists? Guest Editor’S Introduction, W. Justin Dyer

BYU Studies

A while back, I was sitting in a university meeting at the beginning of another school year. A therapist was facilitating a helpful discussion on the growing concern of student mental health. When toxic perfectionism came up, the facilitator mentioned in an offhanded way that we have a particular problem with this at Brigham Young University (BYU) because of “the gospel.” This statement was not much of a surprise given the seemingly common attitude that BYU students (and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in general) struggle with perfectionism.

An Algorithm Based On Priority Rules For Solving A Multi-Drone Routing Problem In Hazardous Waste Collection, Youssef Harrath Dr., Jihene Kaabi Dr. Jan 2024

An Algorithm Based On Priority Rules For Solving A Multi-Drone Routing Problem In Hazardous Waste Collection, Youssef Harrath Dr., Jihene Kaabi Dr.

Research & Publications

This research investigates the problem of assigning pre-scheduled trips to multiple drones to collect hazardous waste from different sites in the minimum time. Each drone is subject to essential restrictions: maximum flying capacity and recharge operation. The goal is to assign the trips to the drones so that the waste is collected in the minimum time. This is done if the total flying time is equally distributed among the drones. An algorithm was developed to solve the problem. The algorithm is based on two main ideas: sort the trips according to a given priority rule and assign the current trip …

Providing Specialized Preparation For Counselors In Catholic Schools, Timothy J. Cook, Jan J. Powers, Jiwon Kim Jan 2024

Providing Specialized Preparation For Counselors In Catholic Schools, Timothy J. Cook, Jan J. Powers, Jiwon Kim

Journal of Catholic Education

School counselors are needed now more than ever. Providing Catholic school counselors the specialized formation they need to be effective in the Catholic school context is essential. This study addressed two research questions in this regard: (1) What competencies (e.g., understanding, incorporating) and topics do Catholic school principals and school counselors believe are important for school counselors to fully contribute to the educational and faith-based mission of Catholic schools; and (2) How might the research findings inform pre-service education and/or continuing education and formation of school counselors for the Catholic school context? Online surveys were developed using the “Defining Characteristics …

Restoring Balance To Qualified Immunity: Modified Mandatory Sequencing, Cain, Patrick Jan 2024

Restoring Balance To Qualified Immunity: Modified Mandatory Sequencing, Cain, Patrick

Santa Clara Law Review

Qualified immunity continues to confound and frustrate judges, lawyers, law professors, law students, and even those outside the legal industry. Much of this frustration results from outcomes that shock the conscience, such as when government officials are granted qualified immunity despite stealing money while executing a search warrant or when government officials lock a prisoner in a highly unsanitary cell for a week.

Legal scholars have examined two main areas within the qualified immunity doctrine: the common law origins and the clearly established prong of qualified immunity analysis. The common law origins of qualified immunity have been thoroughly examined, and …

In Context: Foreign And International Law In Abortion Litigation, Davis, Martha F. Jan 2024

In Context: Foreign And International Law In Abortion Litigation, Davis, Martha F.

Santa Clara Law Review

In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Org’n, the U.S. Supreme Court, both the majority and dissenting justices, employed comparative law. For some of the justices in the majority, this reflected a change from their prior rejection of comparative law in United States courts. However, a review of the majority’s approach to comparative law reveals flaws in their analysis – in particular, a failure to appreciate the broader context surrounding comparative sources. As state courts now take the lead in considering cases relating to abortion, they have the opportunity to develop more nuanced and accurate approaches to comparative law.

The Mature Minor Doctrine And Covid Vaccination In Connecticut, Brianna Cyr Jan 2024

The Mature Minor Doctrine And Covid Vaccination In Connecticut, Brianna Cyr

Connecticut Law Review

The mature minor doctrine is an exception to the common law rule of parental informed consent for a child’s medical decisions. The mature minor doctrine is applicable as either doctrine or statute in some states, but not all. Connecticut currently upholds the common law view for a minor child’s medical decision-making authority. Consequently, one prominent topic of discussion in recent years deals with the Covid-19 pandemic and the public policy discussions over nation-wide vaccination efforts. Many minors, children legally under the age of eighteen, are looking to make their own medical decisions when dealing with vaccination for the Coronavirus. By …

Have Government Incentives Led To An Increase In The Adoption Of Solar Panels?, Sienna L. Houle Jan 2024

Have Government Incentives Led To An Increase In The Adoption Of Solar Panels?, Sienna L. Houle

Journal of Earth and Life Science

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 provides a tax credit for installations of renewable energy or battery storage that are completed between 2022 and 2034. The primary goal was to encourage citizens of the United States to reduce the use of fossil fuels and progress toward our climate goal of being carbon neutral by 2050. Numerous states have additional benefits for installing solar on top of the federal tax credit. Through the findings of this research paper, solar panel adoption increased as the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 went into effect.

Brief Of Amici Curiae Corporate And Securities Law Experts: Central Maine Power Company V. Maine Commission On Government Ethics And Election Practices, Sarah C. Haan

Scholarly Articles

Amici submit this brief to share expertise on corporate governance and securities laws and practices that relate directly to the lower court’s narrow-tailoring analysis of the Maine statute at the center of this case. While all participating amici may not agree with every statement in the brief, all amici agree that the Act’s 5% equity ownership threshold is not arbitrary and that ownership of 5% or more of a U.S. entity’s equity by a foreign government or a foreign-government-influenced entity presents a foreign influence on the U.S. entity’s governance and decision-making.

The Influence Of Cultural Background Information On Emotional Body Language Recognition, Erjia Xu, Ping Hu Jan 2024

The Influence Of Cultural Background Information On Emotional Body Language Recognition, Erjia Xu, Ping Hu

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Culture shapes how people express and feel emotions in specific situations and certain aspects of emotions vary across cultures. Body expressions are as powerful as facial expressions in conveying emotions, with North Americans tending to exhibit more exaggerated emotional body language (EBL) than East Asians (Scherer et al., 2018). Our study used two experiments to explore whether individuals' emotion recognition of EBL was affected by cultural background information. Experiment 1 recruited fifty Chinese participants to explored whether individual recognition of emotions was affected by the cultural background of the expresser. We found that participants were more likely to perceive the …

Bicultural Identity Integration And Life Satisfaction: Two Generations Of Bangladeshi In The Uk, Raihana Sharmin, Pawel Boski Jan 2024

Bicultural Identity Integration And Life Satisfaction: Two Generations Of Bangladeshi In The Uk, Raihana Sharmin, Pawel Boski

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This study aimed to investigate the bicultural identity integration between 1st and 2nd generation Bangladeshi in the UK and the relationship between various identity profiles with personal and family life satisfaction measures. In line with Boski’s (2021) theoretical framework, cultural identity has been conceptualized in a theoretical three steps model. First, cultures are described on a set of values, to establish their joint and mutually exclusive characteristics. Next participants express their personal preferences on the same set of values. Lastly, each cultural identity is operationalized as a sum of products of cultural descriptors (their weights) and personal preferences. This approach …
