Implementation Of Technological Innovations: An Identification And Examination Of Opinion Leaders And Advice Networks In Primary Care, Alan Kunz Lomelin Jan 2024

Implementation Of Technological Innovations: An Identification And Examination Of Opinion Leaders And Advice Networks In Primary Care, Alan Kunz Lomelin

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Technological innovations, such as artificial intelligence, have the potential to mitigate health disparities in healthcare, but lower uptake of these innovations in low resource healthcare settings, due to limited resources and staff shortages, may lead to missed opportunities. However, low-cost implementation strategies may facilitate the uptake of these innovations and increase their accessibility and adoption in this setting. The Network Model of Diffusion of Innovations suggests the identification of opinion leaders and the study of advice networks as strategies that may help enhance the uptake of innovations. Specifically, this framework suggests the use of a sociometric or network approach to …

The Validity Of Trade Restrictions On Artificial Intelligence Technology Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade's National Security Exception, Isabelle Brundieck Jan 2024

The Validity Of Trade Restrictions On Artificial Intelligence Technology Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade's National Security Exception, Isabelle Brundieck

American University International Law Review

This Comment argues that the U.S. restrictions on the export of semiconductors and other AI technology to China do not violate the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 (GATT 1994). Instead, such measures are legitimate expressions under GATT 1994’s Article XXI national security exception, which allows a country to break other articles within the agreement if necessary to protect the country’s essential national security interests. Given the national security risks associated with the rise of AI technology and the likelihood that such technology will be supplied to a military enterprise, the current trade restrictions qualify for the exception. However, …

Trauma Exposure’S Influence On How Black Superwomen Cope And Perceive Stress, Latisha Thomas Jan 2024

Trauma Exposure’S Influence On How Black Superwomen Cope And Perceive Stress, Latisha Thomas

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Black women in the United States experience high levels of lifetime trauma exposure, which significantly affects their perceived stress and coping mechanisms. The lifetime trauma experienced by Black women in the United States is a large and intricate issue shaped by numerous historical, cultural, and structural elements that affect their perceived stress and coping mechanisms. Lifetime trauma encompasses a wide range of painful events or experiences that transpire throughout an individual's life, significantly and persistently affecting their mental, emotional, and physical health (National Institute of Mental Health, 2020). These traumatic occurrences can encompass a broad range of experiences, including physical …

Dentists’ Accounts Of Interpersonal Interactions Three Decades After The Postmortem Identification Of The Branch Davidians, Melissa Izuagbe Jan 2024

Dentists’ Accounts Of Interpersonal Interactions Three Decades After The Postmortem Identification Of The Branch Davidians, Melissa Izuagbe

Psychology Theses - Archive

Despite extensive research on the psychological effects of mass disasters on survivors, the positive outcomes for volunteers and forensic workers, along with coping strategies to alleviate job-related stress, remain understudied. Self-disclosure and social support play pivotal roles in mitigating stress and fostering positive outcomes. This study employed interpretative phenomenological analysis to describe dentists’ experiences of self-disclosure and social support through the 31 years since conducting the postmortem identifications following the Branch Davidian Tragedy. The study was preregistered on the Open Science Framework (OSF) to promote transparency in research. We interviewed a subset (N = 14) out of the 50 dentists …

Integrable Evolution Equations, Ramesh C. Sharma Jan 2024

Integrable Evolution Equations, Ramesh C. Sharma

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

Integrable evolution equations are certain nonlinear partial differential equations or semidiscrete nonlinear difference equations that are used to model wave propagation in various media. The goal of this thesis is to present the derivation of integrable evolution equations in a way accessible to nonexperts in the field of integrable systems and to illustrate those derivations by various explicit examples. In the case of nonlinear partial differential equations, both the spacial variable x and temporal variable t are continuous independent variables. In the case of semidiscrete nonlinear difference equations, the spacial variable n is a discrete independent variable and the temporal …

Spanish On Bulletin Boards In Baltimore Public Libraries, Francisco Martínez Ibarra Jan 2024

Spanish On Bulletin Boards In Baltimore Public Libraries, Francisco Martínez Ibarra

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

Public libraries provide not only a safe space to access information but to interact with other members of the local community as well. The purpose of my paper is to study communication practices derived from posting messages on analog bulletin boards in Baltimore, Maryland. A few of the questions that guide my exploration are: who uses the bulletin board and how is it structured linguistically? Are Spanish and English used any differently regarding the author and the topic of the message? Does language use align with the demographics of the community?

I collected 488 texts from a total of 36 …

Usurping Authority: Illinois Sheriffs Declare Law Unconstitutional, Jason M. Cieslik Jan 2024

Usurping Authority: Illinois Sheriffs Declare Law Unconstitutional, Jason M. Cieslik

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

In January of 2023, Illinois signed the Protect Illinois Communities Act into law. The law’s passage caused concern for those who were strong proponents of the Second Amendment. The law prohibited the possession, ownership, distribution, and sale of assault weapons. As a result, approximately ninety Illinois county sheriffs issued statements opposing the law as an infringement of one’s right to bear arms. Furthermore, many of the county sheriffs stated that they would not enforce the law because it was unconstitutional. In most states, the office of county sheriff is created through the state constitution. A county sheriff’s duties, including enforcement …

“Commanding The Price Of Labor”: Confronting The Human Cost Of Labor Monopsony, Alvaro M. Bedoya, Catherine M. Sanchez Jan 2024

“Commanding The Price Of Labor”: Confronting The Human Cost Of Labor Monopsony, Alvaro M. Bedoya, Catherine M. Sanchez

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

Since 1890, the architects of American antitrust law made clear that they aimed to protect labor market competition against the abuses of concentrated capital. Yet antitrust enforcers have only recently begun to challenge mergers based on their impact on labor markets, and only last year issued formal guidelines to publicize how law enforcement should analyze the labor market effects of such combinations. Comparing the conditions of modern-day meatpacking workers to those of the early twentieth century Beef Trust, the authors underscore the human cost of labor monopsony, and stress the importance of challenging mergers that allow corporations to "command the …

The Fallacies Behind The Excise Tax: On “Excessive” Charity Compensation, Elaine Waterhouse Wilson Jan 2024

The Fallacies Behind The Excise Tax: On “Excessive” Charity Compensation, Elaine Waterhouse Wilson

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

This Article examines the fundamental flaws in Section 4960 of the Internal Revenue Code, which imposes an excise tax on nonprofit executive compensation exceeding $1 million. The provision, enacted as part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, rests on three problematic fallacies. First, Congress incorrectly assumed that an excise tax on nonprofits would function equivalently to the elimination of a tax deduction for excessive compensation in the for-profit sector under Section 162(m). Second, lawmakers failed to recognize that nonprofits respond differently to tax incentives than for-profit entities due to their distinct governance structures and sensitivity to public opinion …

Ironic And Absurd Discourse Of Dress And Appearance On Social Media, Craig Hobin Jan 2024

Ironic And Absurd Discourse Of Dress And Appearance On Social Media, Craig Hobin

Major Papers by TMD Master of Science Students

The purpose of this paper is to interpret how absurdity can be ironic through dress and appearance. By using two popular culture examples, one contemporary and one from the 1990’s, I look at how existential philosophies impact comparisons to society and how their reactions of dress and appearance can be ironic. This paper discusses Lee Alexander McQueen and Austin Babbitt (AssPizza) to find the intersection of irony, absurdism, social comparison, and dress and appearance. These two examples prove irony can be interpreted through an understanding of existentialism and how one views society and if they draw comparisons to their peers. …

Nordstrom And Generation Z, Emma Squires Jan 2024

Nordstrom And Generation Z, Emma Squires

Major Papers by TMD Master of Science Students

This study aimed to investigate the influence of Nordstrom's business practices on the shopping behavior of Generation Z consumers. With the rise of technology and changing consumer preferences, it is crucial to understand how department stores like Nordstrom can adapt to the purchasing habits of this emerging consumer segment. The significance of this study lies in filling the research gap regarding Nordstrom and its engagement with Gen Z. Existing literature primarily focuses on older generations and lacks any insights into the purchasing behavior of Generation Z consumers, especially when it comes to department stores.

Gen Z consumers are defined as …

Fashion, Politics, And War In The Shadow Of September 11th, 2001, Aileen Valerio Jan 2024

Fashion, Politics, And War In The Shadow Of September 11th, 2001, Aileen Valerio

Major Papers by TMD Master of Science Students

Through an examination of dress behavior, this paper gathered primary and secondary source literature that improves the understanding of America's response to 9/11 and the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in terms of fashion and dress behavior. Primary source literature includes newspapers and magazines that range from 2000 to 2005. This date range was selected to limit other factors that may contribute to potential changes in dress behavior, as the turn of the century (1999-2000) created uncertainty, and early signs of The Great Recession of 2008 began to emerge around 2006. Secondary sources were not limited to a date …

War, Remembrance, And Katýn:
How Public Memory Sites Affirm National Identity, Adele Partington Jan 2024

War, Remembrance, And Katýn:
How Public Memory Sites Affirm National Identity, Adele Partington

History and Political Science | Senior Theses

The nation of Poland had a well-established national identity based on its culture, religion, language, and history prior to its occupation by the USSR, but this identity was suppressed in the sixty years of Soviet control from 1939 to 1989. After achieving their independence, Poles reexamined their history and identity, in addition to choosing which aspects of Soviet history and identity to keep or do away with. This thesis examines the relationship between public memory sites in or about Poland and the affirmation of the Polish national identity after Polish independence from the Soviet Union in 1989. Building on the …

A Vision For End Time Youth Ministries, Ricardo V. Bain Jan 2024

A Vision For End Time Youth Ministries, Ricardo V. Bain

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

God has entrusted Seventh-day Adventists with a special task of encircling the world with relevant streams of light, from the Bible, to prepare all people, everywhere on this planet, for his return. This means all people are to be solicited with our end-time message. Present truth is always particularly pertinent at a given time and place. Including youth in extracting and expressing present truth is critical to propelling it. This paper is a plea to re-vision and envision what transformative ministry to and with youth could look like in the time of the end.

Immigration Ministry Implications Of Hallyu: Exploration Of The Potential Impact Of South Korean Popular Cultural Flow On Ministry By And To Immigrants, David Kim Jan 2024

Immigration Ministry Implications Of Hallyu: Exploration Of The Potential Impact Of South Korean Popular Cultural Flow On Ministry By And To Immigrants, David Kim

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

The phenomenon of Hallyu—Korean popular culture—is globally extensive in its influence and reception. Hallyu has transformed how South Koreans and Korean American immigrants perceive their identity and cultural esteem. Coupled with the Korean American immigrant church’s central role in establishing and growing its communities, Hallyu conditions present an opportunity to impact the immigrant ministry in North America. This study suggests that Hallyu lowers barriers to cross-cultural engagement and connection which can positively impact ministry conducted by immigrants and to immigrants.

Just Don’T Do It: Why Cannabis Regulations Are The Reason Cannabis Businesses Are Failing, Edward Adams Jan 2024

Just Don’T Do It: Why Cannabis Regulations Are The Reason Cannabis Businesses Are Failing, Edward Adams

Articles

Part I will provide a historical overview of the cannabis plant and our country’s experience with it prior to the election of President Richard Nixon. It is at that point, the early 1970s, that the current federal cannabis scheme began to take shape. Sections I.A though I.C will discuss the inception of the War on Drugs during the Nixon Administration and examine the subsequent social movement that led President Reagan to revamp and expand the War on Drugs throughout the 1980s.

The legal framework for federal cannabis regulation has largely remained stagnant since the Reagan Administration. Nevertheless, the federal stance …

Interpreting The Ambiguities Of Section 230, Alan Rozenshtein Jan 2024

Interpreting The Ambiguities Of Section 230, Alan Rozenshtein

Articles

As evidenced by the confusion expressed by multiple Justices in last Term’s Gonzalez v. Google, there is little consensus as to the scope of Section 230, the law that broadly immunizes internet platforms from liability for third-party content. This is particularly striking given that no statute has had a bigger impact on the internet than Section 230, often called the “Magna Carta of the internet.”

In this essay I argue that Section 230, despite its simple-seeming language, is a deeply ambiguous statute. This ambiguity stems from a repeated series of errors committed by Congress, the lower courts, and the Supreme …

Prosecutorial Data Transparency And Data Justice, Perry Moriearty Jan 2024

Prosecutorial Data Transparency And Data Justice, Perry Moriearty

Articles

The U.S. criminal legal system is notoriously racialized. Though Black and Latinx people make up less than 30% of U.S. residents, they constitute more than 50% of the nearly two million people currently in U.S. prisons and jails. For decades, research has indicated that one group of decision-makers has had an outsized influence on these numbers: prosecutors. From whom to charge to what sentences to recommend, no actor plays a greater role in determining who goes to prison in this country. Highly subjective and lacking in formal guidance and accountability, prosecutorial decisions are especially vulnerable to racial bias. They are …

The Three-Verdict Problem, Jack Whiteley Jan 2024

The Three-Verdict Problem, Jack Whiteley

Articles

!n Scotland, for hundreds of years, juries have chosen between three criminal verdicts: “guilty,” “not guilty,” and “not proven.” The “not proven” verdict’s legal meaning remains mysterious. In this article, I aim to describe and solve the problem. Applying modern ideas about standards of proof to the intellectual history of “not proven” yields eight plausible meanings for the verdict. With the extent of the problem in mind, I offer a solution. In the three-verdict system, jurors should deliver a “guilty” verdict when they believe that the accused has committed the crime and a “not guilty” verdict when they believe that …

Scotus House: Can A Supreme Court Ethics Lawyer And Inspector General Help Get This Fraternity Under Control?, Richard Painter Jan 2024

Scotus House: Can A Supreme Court Ethics Lawyer And Inspector General Help Get This Fraternity Under Control?, Richard Painter

Articles

Today, the United States Supreme Court is immersed in an ethics crisis of unprecedented proportions. Public confidence in the Court is at an all-time low and Congress is considering action. The Court is less likely to police itself than it was over fifty years ago when Justice Abraham Fortas resigned over a scandal that was probably less serious than that facing at least one justice today. This article discusses the Court’s recent scandals and explains multiple factors that make the Court prone to ethics lapses, perhaps more so than the other two branches of government. This Article then proposes that …

The Seven Essential Law School Simulation Courses, Mitch Zamoff Jan 2024

The Seven Essential Law School Simulation Courses, Mitch Zamoff

Articles

As we mark the ten-year anniversary of the American Bar Association’s six-credit experiential learning requirement and the launch of the NextGen bar exam, it is critical for U.S. law schools to conduct rigorous assessments of their experiential education curricula. While most law schools now offer students meaningful opportunities to develop lawyering skills in clinics and field placements, there is much less consistency in their simulation course offerings. Simulation courses are a critical component of experiential legal education. While students in clinics and field placements gain valuable, realistic experience addressing the issues presented by their actual clients, those issues may sometimes …

Why Mass Incarceration Is Uniquely American, Michael Tonry Jan 2024

Why Mass Incarceration Is Uniquely American, Michael Tonry

Articles

Mass incarceration, among Western countries a uniquely American phenomenon, resulted from a transformation of American criminal justice systems. Indeterminate sentencing systems in which legislatures established maximum sentences, prosecutors processed cases, judges decided who went to prison, and parole boards decided how long people stayed there were replaced by determinate systems in which legislatures prescribed minimum sentences, prosecutors made the key charging and sentencing decisions, judges processed cases and sentenced minor crimes, and parole boards lost much of their authority. Parole boards and judges become largely irrelevant whenever prosecutors file charges subject to mandatory sentence, three-strikes, truth-in-sentencing, and life without parole …
