Antibiotic Resistance In A Coastal River In Mississippi, Usa – Potential Drivers, Shuo Shen, Wei Wu, Eric A. Saillant, Darrell Jay Grimes Jan 2024

Antibiotic Resistance In A Coastal River In Mississippi, Usa – Potential Drivers, Shuo Shen, Wei Wu, Eric A. Saillant, Darrell Jay Grimes

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are major sources of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in water bodies. Most studies on the impact of WWTPs on antibiotic resistance have focused on freshwater systems, with little information on coastal and estuarine waters with variable salinity. This study monitored seasonal levels of ARGs at the effluent and downstream of the Pascagoula— Moss Point WWTP in the lower Pascagoula River, a coastal river in southeastern Mississippi, USA. Surface water samples were collected seasonally at upstream, outflow, and 3 downstream sites from February to November 2016. Bacterial resistance to sulfamethazine, tetracycline, and …

Introducing Biosimilar Competition For Cell And Gene Therapy Products, Brian Canter, Sabine Sussman, Stephen Colvill, Nitzan Arad, Elizabeth Staton, Arti Rai Jan 2024

Introducing Biosimilar Competition For Cell And Gene Therapy Products, Brian Canter, Sabine Sussman, Stephen Colvill, Nitzan Arad, Elizabeth Staton, Arti Rai

Faculty Scholarship

This article provides an early analysis of the potential for creating future biosimilar competition for cell and gene therapies (CGTs) to lower prices and improve patient access, building on a unique set of interviews with relevant experts. Our discussion addressed regulatory, manufacturing, intellectual property, and market size challenges. Due to CGTs’ complexity, meeting the regulatory requirement of ‘high similarity with no clinically meaningful differences’ will be difficult. Gene therapies are likely better candidates for biosimilar development than cell therapies. Biosimilarity should be met when gene therapy biosimilars contain the same genetic sequence as a reference product, and the variability in …

A Great American Gun Myth: Race And The Naming Of The “Saturday Night Special”, Jennifer L. Behrens, Joseph Blocher Jan 2024

A Great American Gun Myth: Race And The Naming Of The “Saturday Night Special”, Jennifer L. Behrens, Joseph Blocher

Faculty Scholarship

At a time when Second Amendment doctrine has taken a strongly historical turn and gun rights advocates have increasingly argued that gun regulation itself is historically racist, it is especially important that historical claims about race and guns be taken seriously and vetted appropriately. In this short article, we evaluate the often-repeated claim that the nickname “Saturday Night Special” derives from the phrase “[n___er]-town Saturday night.”

Based on a review of newspapers, legislative debates, dictionaries, slang compendiums, and other sources, we find no historical support for this claim. It apparently appeared for the first time, unsourced, in a 1976 article …

Climate Law In The 21st Century: An Analysis Of Climate Legislation And Its Role In Mitigating The Emerging Issue Of Climate Refugees, Chloe Giacalone.

Plymouth Law Review

As global warming worsens, the consequences of climate change are becoming more severe. With its consequences going beyond the natural environment. Climate change is now having adverse effects on vulnerable populations most affected by climate change. This article aims to look at whether climate law has the potential to reduce human displacement. Treaties such as The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement will be analysed to look at the international efforts to reduce climate change and whether they have the potential to mitigate climate change and climate refugees. As there is no definition of a …

A Comparative Study Of Censorship Law And Policy In Relation To Literature And Journalism, Emma Whetnall Jan 2024

A Comparative Study Of Censorship Law And Policy In Relation To Literature And Journalism, Emma Whetnall

Plymouth Law Review

Spanning over time and nations, this article explores the censorship of literature over three main themes: censorship through a religious lens, the censorship of journalism, and censorship in schools. By delving into a case study for Permual Murugan’s One Part Woman and Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses and analysing Hindu and Islamic approaches to censorship and the extremities they will go to to censor, Eastern religious tolerance of free speech and unorthodox views is exposed. Further, it explores the freedom for journalists, particularly in Islamic countries where said freedom is restricted, and the threat that censorship has on democracy. It …

Protecting The Digital Self: Assessing The Fitness Of Data Protection Law To Fulfil Individual Needs In The Information Age, Owen Pearce

Plymouth Law Review

This dissertation aims to evaluate the legislative and regulatory landscape surrounding data protection in both commercial and governmental settings. Personal data in the Information Age has taken a position of vital social importance,1 being seen as a ‘digital extension of self’.2 Equally, information is of immense value to private sector companies which utilise data in the name of innovation, personalisation, and profit. The government also has obtained vast quantities of personal data in pursuit of protecting broader societal values, such as preventing serious crime. Following the Snowden Revelations of the extent of governmental surveillance,3 and with a growing awareness of …

Delphi Panel For Establishing Land Use Compatibility Areas And Standards For Vertiports, David C. Ison

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

This study aimed to determine land use compatibility guidelines for vertiports, which are locations where vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft operate. The study employed a three-round e-Delphi panel to establish vertiport land use compatibility zones and standards. The results reached a consensus of at least 70%, providing comprehensive land use compatibility recommendations for vertiports. The study provides a foundation for vertiport land use compatibility planning, ensuring the integration of vertiports in existing communities. The findings can also increase public and local officials' awareness of the needs and requirements of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) infrastructure development. The uniformity between existing …

Comparative Analysis Of Aviation And Ground Transportation Safety Standards Applicable To The Integration Of Unmanned Aircraft Operations, Andrew Walker

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

This study performed a comparative analysis of SMS in both the aviation and ground transportation industries to identify any gaps that may impact aviation safety by incorporating UAS operations within the ground transportation industry. The study reviewed relevant literature and compared the FAA SMS and FMCSA SMC policy components. The study also compared the implementation of OSHA requirements within the aviation and ground transportation industries. After reviewing the relevant policy components, the study finds that differences in safety standards between the FAA SMA and FMCSA SMC would impact safety. The study recommends that the SMC incorporate process descriptions for SRM …

Learning About Academia Through Scrum: A Ph.D.’S Perspective, Sarah Reynolds, Omar Ochoa, Massood Towhidnejad, James J. Pembridge, Radu Babiceanu

Papers

This innovative practice full paper describes the integration of Ph.D. students into departmental operations using Agile approaches, i.e., Scrum. Scrum is an agile framework originally developed for managing software development projects, but in recent years has been adapted into a framework used in classroom experiences and a management technique for non-engineering project-based work. In this work, Scrum was adapted at the department operations level to enhance the efficacy of department projects and processes. A Ph.D. student acted as the Scrum Master for one of the teams. This provided the Ph.D. student with a unique experiential learning opportunity to apply theoretical …

Partners In Peace: A Sketch For A Link Between The Nobel Peace Prize And Nchc, Kevin W. Dean, Henrik Syse

Honors in Practice Online Archive

In a plenary address at the 2023 NCHC annual conference in Chicago, the former Vice Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee issued a challenge for honors students and educators to use their voices and positions of local leadership to promote peace. The call for peace advocacy extended in Chicago resonated with the large audience, as leadership development represents a high-impact practice that many honors programs embrace. As national and international conflicts produce increasing polarization and divisiveness that seep into our campuses and local communities, the urgency for honors students to hone critical thinking and practical skills needed for citizen leadership …

Back To The Future? Rishi Sunak's Industrial Strategy, James Silverwood, Richard Woodward Jan 2024

Back To The Future? Rishi Sunak's Industrial Strategy, James Silverwood, Richard Woodward

Articles

Since becoming Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak has been variously described as pursuing a ‘furtive', ‘surreptitious' and ‘apologetic' industrial strategy. Terms such as industrial policy and industrial strategy have been expunged from official speeches and policy documents, yet industrial intervention remains widespread. In adopting this approach, the article argues that Sunak has returned the UK to an industrial policy consensus established under Thatcherism. This consensus places in the foreground pro-market rhetoric and policies suggesting that industrial strategy should be limited to the correction of market failure, while in the background the state actively intervenes to shape the structure of the economy …
