Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
ChatGPT, a relatively new Large Language Model (LLM) artificial intelligence (Al) chatbot, has gained significant attention as the most downloaded software app, accruing over 100 million users within two months of its release. This software can generate quick, articulate responses to virtually any textual query. Many educators are concerned about its potential for enabling student cheating. However, it currently suffers significant limitations in solving chemistry problems-documented through peer-reviewed articles and from the author's experience suggesting that chemistry students will perform far better, on average, by studying than by relying on ChatGPT. This is particularly true of math-centric problems, which the …

31. Collaborative Writing And Ai: A Research Assignment For An Undergraduate Professional Communication Course, Beth Buyserie
Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
This chapter contextualizes and describes a collaborative Al research assignment for an in-person 2000-level Professional Communication general education course. This "Collaborative Writing and Al" assignment asks teams of students to 1) conduct their own secondary research on a specific topic connected to Al, 2) conduct primary research using Al itself, and 3) make recommendations to their peers and future colleagues in the profession or community on how to navigate and respond to a range of interdisciplinary conversations and perspectives on the technology. Within this chapter, the author provides a rationale for the assignment, includes suggestions for background readings included in …

25. Using The Ai Explainpaper To Help Students Better Understand Journal Articles, Erin Jensen, Daniel Hutchinson
Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
We have students use the Al Explainpaper to be able to read and understand journal articles as this is a common assignment in many core classes. In our experiences, students often struggle to understand the content of journal articles and then struggle to use the journal article as a source in their writing. The Al Explainpaper provides an opportunity for students to use the bot to better understand the journal article and have an opportunity to ask the program additional questions about the article. We have found Explainpaper to provide help to students in being able to read and understand …

24. Revisioning A Bibliography Assignment To Center Discovery And Critical Source Engagement, Lillian Campbell, Jenna Green, Nicole Bungert
Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
This chapter shares context, assignment details, and impact of revisions of a research journal assignment in our first-year writing program at a mid-sized private university in the Midwest. With the rise of access to large language processing models like ChatGPT in Spring 2023, we reviewed our curriculum to consider what assignments might be most vulnerable to Al-generated writing. Our bibliography assignment was an obvious contender, since it focused on summary of individual sources. Thus, we worked with our research librarian liaison to reimagine this assignment, guided by a conversation about learning goals. After reviewing relevant scholarship on source use and …

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
Faculty burnout is a concern within academics particularly for the most student-centered teaching faculty. In attempts to support students, faculty can sometimes do so at the expense of their own time and energy that over time can become overwhelming. There exist many concerns within academia on the use of Al and yet this is a tool that could be helpful to teaching loads if utilized properly. This chapter explores ways in which Al might help alleviate some of the workload that teaching faculty experience, which is a start to addressing burnout issues. Ideas are shared in this chapter surrounding Al's …

21. My Summer With Chatgpt, Mary Lourdes Silva
Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
Out of necessity, I first used ChatGPT to process mentally and emotionally two major injuries. Trapped at home for the entire summer, I learned to write with ChatGPT to complete a large-scale research project. The anthropomorphizing experience left me feeling less alone. For nearly a year, news about Al-generated writing software sparked nationwide concern about the future of traditional essays. As an early adopter of most digital technologies and the type of person who welcomes chaos, I chose to learn everything | could about ChatGPT, which meant I needed to learn how to "cheat" with ChatGPT. Inspired by similar assignments …

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
This essay shares the findings of a Spring 2023 honors composition course in which students conducted their own primary research project to investigate the uses and limitations of ChatGPT for first-year writers. By experimenting with integrating ChatGPT into various stages of their writing and revision processes, the students identified the strengths and weaknesses of the writing tool. Then, they observed and interviewed faculty as they graded different versions of essay drafts with varying levels of ChatGPT assistance. Ultimately, they found that ChatGPT was incredibly useful for certain small-scale tasks, but posed significant risks, especially for students with less experience in …

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
This chapter draws from the authors' experience teaching an undergraduate course in the context of Generative Al (GenAl), and shares three instructional innovations we are implementing in response: 1) establishing an appropriate tone; 2) designing in-class activities to engage critically with GenAl; and 3) revising assessment and grading policies. These adaptations are informed by the framework of Critical Media Literacy (CML), which grounds the course. They aim to strike a balanced view that acknowledges both challenges and potentials of GenAl. This chapter aims to furnish a contextual framework for fellow educators to critically engage with the realm of GenAl. Core …

2. Some Ethical Considerations For Teaching And Generative Ai In Higher Education, Lydia Wilkes
Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions
The chapter discusses some ethical considerations for teaching and generative Al in higher education with a focus on large language models like ChatGPT. These considerations include generative Al's effects on the environment and labor, its reliance on data and tendency to violate privacy, the biases encoded in it, and the digital divide. As more sophisticated generative Al is integrated into word processors, these ethical concerns will become more difficult to perceive and the ethics of using Al more difficult to parse. This chapter concludes with a note on power and justice.

Financial Accessibility And External Environmental Forces: A Case Study Of Public, Four-Year Degree Granting Institutions’ Tuition Strategies, Julie Barnett
Dissertations and Theses
Shrinking federal funds and increased accountability expectations rendered a competitive environment for higher education institutions. To compete for enrollment, institutions needed to employ strategic decision-making within the bounds of tuition models imposed by their boards. However, there was a gap in the literature as to how institutions worked within their tuition models to respond to environmental threats. This case study addressed this gap by exploring the decision-making process of administrators in charge of financial and strategic decisions for their institutions, who considered the external educational marketplace. Collectively, there were four emergent themes: (a) marketing the student experience; (b) affordability as …
Juror Privacy Via Anonymity, Jayne S. Ressler
Juror Privacy Via Anonymity, Jayne S. Ressler
Fordham Law Review
Anonymous juries delivered verdicts in the hush-money criminal trial of Donald J. Trump, as well as both of E. Jean Carroll’s defamation cases against him. After the defamation cases concluded, the judge cautioned the jurors against ever publicly revealing their identities. This was sound advice, as recent doxing, threats of violence, and online posts filled with hatred and vitriol illustrate the dangers facing American jurors. The scholarly literature analyzing anonymous juries focuses primarily on the propriety of their use in criminal cases to protect jurors from physical harm. Missing from the conversation, however, is an examination of anonymity’s role in …
Liberty On Hold: The Constitutional Test And Source For Overdetention Claims, Sarya Baladi
Liberty On Hold: The Constitutional Test And Source For Overdetention Claims, Sarya Baladi
Fordham Law Review
The persistence of overdetention—meaning continued detention after officers knew or should have known that the arrested person was entitled to release—poses major concerns about both the fundamental right against arbitrary detention and other unenumerated constitutional rights. The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1979 decision in Baker v. McCollan established a vague constitutional protection against overdetention, but it left lower courts to answer many open questions about its parameters.
Although courts agree that the Constitution prohibits law enforcement from arbitrarily detaining indefinitely an arrested person who protests their legitimate release, the application of this protection has been inconsistent across federal courts of appeals. …

Unleashing Corporate Entrepreneurship, Bernice A. Grant
Unleashing Corporate Entrepreneurship, Bernice A. Grant
Brooklyn Law Review
Noncompetition agreements (noncompetes), which prohibit employees from launching or working at competitive companies for certain periods, have become increasingly prevalent in the workplace. Employers claim they need noncompetes to protect their trade secrets and other legitimate business interests, but most workers do not have access to trade secrets—and when they do, such secrets can be better protected through confidentiality and intellectual property agreements. In practice, many companies appear to use noncompetes as an employee retention tool, but this is not a legitimate purpose for a noncompete. In addition, noncompetes have a disproportionately negative impact on women, people of color, and …
Full Moon Or Full Fraud? A Proposed Method For Interpreting Emojis Under Rule 10b-5, Sophie Abrams
Full Moon Or Full Fraud? A Proposed Method For Interpreting Emojis Under Rule 10b-5, Sophie Abrams
Brooklyn Law Review
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans who were stuck at home turned to social media forums in search of community and investing advice. Fifteen million (and counting) of them found community in r/wallstreetbets, a group on Reddit that banded together to drive up the prices of “meme stocks.” Bed Bath and Beyond was one stock that piqued retail investors’ interest after seeing billionaire investor Ryan Cohen take a 10 percent stake and activist role in the company. However, Cohen ended up being a large disappointment to his retail investor fans, as he subsequently sold off his stake …
Critical Thinking Skills In Pre-Service Teachers And Their Coursework: Investigating The Preparation Of Teachers In The Rural Midwest With Humans, Ai, And Cyborg Researchers, Tiffany Shonerd
Dissertations and Theses
Despite the plethora of research and literature regarding the relationship of critical thinking and its key role in promoting learning, little research investigated the teaching of critical thinking to pre-service teachers in their coursework along with how they facilitate it in their students. As future teachers worked towards completing their teaching degrees, student teaching permitted them to work in live classroom settings with veteran teachers as mentors. Markedly, scholars argued that future teacher programs needed to understand the importance of critical thinking and utilize facilitation strategies in classroom settings. In this way, the live classroom setting could then create students …
Characterizing Sex Differences In Hpv Negative Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Sarah Barclay
Characterizing Sex Differences In Hpv Negative Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Sarah Barclay
Dissertations and Theses
It is now widely accepted that peripheral solid tumors are infiltrated by nerves. This infiltration of malignancies by nerves is referred to as tumor innervation. The Vermeer laboratory studies tumor innervation primarily in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using a syngeneic cell line representing a mutationally-induced form of the disease; these cells are called MOC2-7 cells. In addition to defining the molecular consequences of tumor-infiltrating nerves on disease, the lab also focuses on their influence on behavior. This is important as cancer patients have a significantly higher incidence of depression and anxiety as compared to the population at large. …

Dissertations and Theses
There has been a growing involvement of men in the feminist cause. Nonetheless, their own experiences as self-identified feminist allies have received inadequate attention within the academic research. Just like female activists, men who identify as feminist activists also make use of such digital platforms to support the activism and make significant contributions to the feminist discourse. In view of this, this study explores the experiences of Ghanaian male feminist allies in addition to delving into their experiences as feminist activists in the digital world and how they navigate the challenges that come with aligning themselves with this cause. Through …
Implementing The Science Of Reading Concepts: A Case Study On Perceptions Of Pre-Service Preparations And Readiness Levels At Midwest Universities, Jerri L. Birger
Implementing The Science Of Reading Concepts: A Case Study On Perceptions Of Pre-Service Preparations And Readiness Levels At Midwest Universities, Jerri L. Birger
Dissertations and Theses
In 2000, the National Reading Panel published a report stating that reading instruction should include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension instruction that is explicit and systematic. Despite this recommendation, more than half of fourth graders in the US continue to lack proficiency in reading each year. Further, studies showed that pre-service teachers lacked the training and preparation to demonstrate mastery of the concepts and provide effective literacy instruction. This study employed a case study design to explore the programming surrounding pre-service teacher preparation over the last ten years, their relationships with cooperating teachers, and how that affects perceived …
