Introduction (Documenting The Armenian Genocide), Thomas Kuehne, Marc A. Mamigonian, Mary Jane Rein

History

This introduction provides a valuable overview of the life and accomplishments of Taner Akçam, a Turkish-American historian and sociologist. An international authority on the Armenian Genocide and a leader in human rights, Akçam is the first scholar of Turkish origin to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide and to publish groundbreaking research on this topic. Imprisoned in 1976 for criticizing injustices in Turkey and the government’s treatment of minorities, especially the Kurds, Akçam escaped and fled to Germany. Amnesty International adopted him as a “prisoner of conscience” and the German government granted him asylum. He eventually obtained citizenship in Germany, where he …

The Birth Of The Civil Death Penalty And The Expansion Of Forced Adoptions: Reassessing The Concept Of Termination Of Parental Rights In Light Of Its History, Purposes, And Current Efficacy, Christine Gottlieb Jan 2024

The Birth Of The Civil Death Penalty And The Expansion Of Forced Adoptions: Reassessing The Concept Of Termination Of Parental Rights In Light Of Its History, Purposes, And Current Efficacy, Christine Gottlieb

Faculty Articles

This Article proceeds in three Parts. Part I begins with a historical analysis that situates termination of parental rights within U.S. adoption law more broadly, identifying the legal questions raised in early adoption case law that laid the groundwork for developing stand-alone termination of parental rights proceedings, and examining how the growing demand for babies to adopt and new concerns about children languishing in foster care led to the idea of matching “demand” with “supply” by making more foster children eligible for adoption. This Part explains how the supply-and-demand analysis led to a legal mechanism for terminating parental rights outside …

How To Keep Involved For The "Lazy" And The "Scared", Malcolm D. Gambles Ii

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2024

This presentation is essentially a collection of my own experiences and the strategies that have helped me remain consistent in my service-learning journey. I had a lot of passion when coming up with this presentation because I now have the ability to talk about the struggles I faced when on my service-learning journey and way to maybe help others suffering from the same problems. As someone who has both been considered "lazy," and "scared," when it comes to handling my responsibilities in my early childhood and young adult life, I have picked up many techniques to help me stay involved. …

Reforming Public Institutions To Ensure Fairness And Opportunity, Ryan P. Kaufman, Nolan J. Loch, Kim Nguyen, Katie S. Weinstock, Parnika Chintapalli

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2024

By creating an issue guide, we are able to express our concerns and suggestions for what opportunities there are to address this issue. With a topic about America impacting almost everyone who views the guide, there is going to be someone that learns about how they can potentially make an impact in their community. As a class, we divided each section of the guide into a different group, this way each group was able to do more focused research. We created research papers and created drats to be assembled into the finished product. We learned that these are experiences that …

Service-Learning Course, Shanzida Toha

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2024

Reflecting on my service-learning experience, I recognize that I used to judge first-generation immigrants who struggled with English. Over time, I realized this was unfair, as I hadn’t considered their individual challenges. This shift in perspective led me to become more open-minded, seek new experiences, and pursue my passion for helping others through direct patient care. I realized that engaging in leadership-based service learning could enhance my empathy and leadership abilities, which has become central to my personal and professional growth.

Researcher Access To Social Media Data: Lessons From Clinical Trial Data Sharing, Christopher J. Morten, Gabriel Nicholas, Salomé Viljoen Jan 2024

Researcher Access To Social Media Data: Lessons From Clinical Trial Data Sharing, Christopher J. Morten, Gabriel Nicholas, Salomé Viljoen

Faculty Articles

For years, social media companies have sparred with lawmakers over how much independent access to platform data they should provide researchers. Sharing data with researchers allows the public to better understand the risks and harms associated with social media, including areas such as misinformation, child safety, and political polarization. Yet researcher access is controversial. Privacy advocates and companies raise the potential privacy threats of researchers using such data irresponsibly. In addition, social media companies raise concerns over trade secrecy: the data these companies hold and the algorithms powered by that data are secretive sources of competitive advantage. This Article shows …

Local Government Regulation Of Ccs, Keith B. Hall Jan 2024

Local Government Regulation Of Ccs, Keith B. Hall

Wyoming Law Review

Carbon capture and storage is being used in an increasing number of locations in the United States as a tool to address climate change, and many more projects are in the planning stages. Although government, industry, and some prominent environmental organizations support the use of CCS, some environmental organizations and many citizens who live in the vicinity of proposed CCS projects oppose CCS. This has prompted several local governments to enact ordinances that attempt to prohibit or regulate CCS. These ordinances take many forms—moratoria, zoning restrictions and setbacks, effective bans, outright bans, construction and operational restrictions, and various other types …

Dissecting The Roles Of Cancer Cell Lipid Metabolism In Tumor Progression And Immune Evasion, Mariluz Soula Jan 2024

Dissecting The Roles Of Cancer Cell Lipid Metabolism In Tumor Progression And Immune Evasion, Mariluz Soula

Student Theses and Dissertations

Lipids, along with nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and proteins, are essential biomolecules. These diverse hydrophobic metabolites are composed of fatty acids and include sterols, phospholipids, and glycerides. Lipids can be broken down to fuel energy demands, form the structural basis of all membranes, and can both act as signaling molecules themselves and regulate signaling by impacting membrane fluidity and receptor stability. Given the diverse and essential functions of lipids for normal cell function, it is no surprise that cancer cells leverage lipid metabolic pathways to fuel uncontrolled growth and proliferation and evade cell death. Indeed, enhanced lipid availability has been implicated in …

Fate, Phases, And Form In Vertebrate Organ Morphogenesis-Uncovering A Role Of Morphogenesis At The Supracellular Scale, Sichen Yang Jan 2024

Fate, Phases, And Form In Vertebrate Organ Morphogenesis-Uncovering A Role Of Morphogenesis At The Supracellular Scale, Sichen Yang

Student Theses and Dissertations

How morphology unfolds from fertilization to birth is one of the most fundamental questions in the life sciences. Self-organization in embryonic development, whereby organs robustly adopt forms through intrinsic processes, is a central feature that remains enigmatic. To achieve greater clarity of such processes, new conceptual and experimental approaches may be needed. Much of work in developmental biology in the past three to four decades has focused on cell and subcellular levels of organization. In line with work of some key conceptual thinkers, we revisit the notions of epigenetics. Rather than confining it to the molecular mechanisms of chromatin remodeling, …

The Role Of Gram - Negative Anaerobes In Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Samuel Clay Williams Jan 2024

The Role Of Gram - Negative Anaerobes In Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Samuel Clay Williams

Student Theses and Dissertations

Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a chronic autoinflammatory disease with unknown triggers.New evidence in the last five years has begun to clarify two parts of the pathogenesis of the disease. These two parts are the fundamental role of keratinocyte inflammation from early through late-stage disease and the role of the microbiome as an antigenic and infectious trigger of pathogenesis. Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria (GNA) such as Prevotella, Porphyromonas, and Fusobacterium are commonly identified in HS lesions, and their prevalence in lesions is associated with HS disease severity. Additionally, newly epithelialized structures called "dermal tunnels" are found in severe disease and are associated with …

The Nanomechanics Of Protocadherin 15, A Protein Essential For Human Hearing, Camila M. Villasante Jan 2024

The Nanomechanics Of Protocadherin 15, A Protein Essential For Human Hearing, Camila M. Villasante

Student Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical force controls the opening and closing of mechanotransductive ion channels atop the hair bundles in the inner ear. A mechanical element called the gating spring modulates the mechanotransduction channel's open probability by changing the force transmitted to the channels. The molecular identity of the gating spring is yet unconfirmed, but a leading candidate is the filamentous tip link connecting the mechanotransduction channel to the tallest neighboring stereocilium. The tip link is essential to mechanotransduction: when it is broken, mechanotransduction is abolished, and when it is allowed to regenerate, mechanotransduction returns. Each tip link comprises four protein molecules: a dimer …

Investigating The Supracellular Processes Underlying Emergent Material Phase Properties During Embryonic Skin Morphogenesis, Karl H. Palmquist Jan 2024

Investigating The Supracellular Processes Underlying Emergent Material Phase Properties During Embryonic Skin Morphogenesis, Karl H. Palmquist

Student Theses and Dissertations

During embryonic development, vertebrate tissues are sculpted by the coordinated behaviors of cells.Vertebrate organs are complex, typically requiring the orchestrated dynamics of hundreds to thousands of cells. Yet, due to their functional significance, the mechanisms underlying organ formation are robust. This implies the need for mechanisms to constrain critical processes during embryogenesis. While much of developmental biology has focused on the aspects of self-organization that relate to patterns of chemicals and molecules across a tissue and their relationship to gene regulatory networks, less attention has been given to the physical mechanisms at play. In particular,it is poorly understood how, in complex …

Assessing Cool Corridor Heat Resilience Strategies For Human-Scale Transportation, Nicole Iroz-Elardo, Ladd Keith, Kristina M. Currans, Ashley Avila, Lauren Heath, Brenden J. Little, Ethan C. Wissler, Andrew J. Birkelbach Jan 2024

Assessing Cool Corridor Heat Resilience Strategies For Human-Scale Transportation, Nicole Iroz-Elardo, Ladd Keith, Kristina M. Currans, Ashley Avila, Lauren Heath, Brenden J. Little, Ethan C. Wissler, Andrew J. Birkelbach

TREC Final Reports

Road pavement is a known contributor to the urban heat island effect. Several vendors are providing engineered pavements coatings—known as “cool pavement”—to reflect light and, therefore, reflect heat to reduce the thermal load of roads. Few of these cool pavements have been evaluated outside lab conditions, where they tend to rely heavily on surface temperature measurements with the assumption that lower surface temperatures result in lower ambient air temperatures in real-world practice. Further, while heat is detrimental to the pedestrian and cyclist experience and health, almost no research exists documenting the experience of the cool pavement on active travelers, including …

Evaluation Of Public Radon Messaging In Kentucky As Compared To Three Other States, Abigail Knapp Jan 2024

Evaluation Of Public Radon Messaging In Kentucky As Compared To Three Other States, Abigail Knapp

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Radon poses a large health risk to those exposed to it, as it is an invisible, odorless, carcinogenic gas. Kentucky has high ambient levels of radon, but public awareness remains low as tobacco has been publicized as the main cause of lung cancer. As Kentucky has the highest incidence of lung and bronchial cancers in the United States, we aimed to examine the state’s health department radon page to see if it has sufficient information to warn residents about radon and provide resources. We reviewed the current Kentucky public messaging, radon rates, testing rates, and legislation compared to Ohio, Washington, …
