The Biograph Project, Tracey Goessel Jan 2024

The Biograph Project, Tracey Goessel

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This essay details the trials and tribulations of attempting to restore 450 short films, shot between 1908 and 1913. Details discussed include a history of paper prints created for copyright purposes, and sometimes the only source of degraded material; the eclectic nature of the Biograph camera negative and the challenges of scanning it on modern scanners; the challenges of the surviving material existing in shooting order, not in final print assemblies; missing intertitles; the degradation of nitrate-based film and negative stock; subsequent reissues and re-editing of material, and missing or lost material. Finally, we discuss the challenges of dealing with …

Daydreams: Cinema Of The Russian Empire And Beyond, A Database, Anna Kovalova

The Journal of e-Media Studies

The essay provides a detailed description of Daydreams, the first scholarly database of feature films produced in the Russian Empire and its former territories from the first years after the October Revolution until the end of private film production. This database contains the most complete filmographies, synopses, iconographic materials (such as promotional stills, posters, and frame enlargements), and video clips for more than 2,500 films. Tracing its goals, scope, sources, and structure, the article discusses a fundamental digital platform of materials related to the cinema of the Russian Empire which is about to open in the fall of 2023.

Annotating Flolo: How The Media Ecology Project Fostered Early Cinema Performance Analysis And Collaborative Research, Jenny Oyallon-Koloski Jan 2024

Annotating Flolo: How The Media Ecology Project Fostered Early Cinema Performance Analysis And Collaborative Research, Jenny Oyallon-Koloski

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This essay demonstrates how multimodal analysis and scholarly collaboration fostered by the Media Ecology Project (MEP) can offer a methodological intervention in the study of performance in early cinema. This research asks what distinguished the performances of Florence Lawrence (known as the “Biograph Girl”) from other performers’ acting modalities during the rise of Hollywood’s star system. To help answer this question, the author created a set of movement annotation guidelines, using Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) as an analytical framework, which a team of scholars used to annotate digitized films of Lawrence and her contemporaries from the Library of Congress’ Paper …

Seeing Through The Haverstraw Tunnel, Dan Streible Jan 2024

Seeing Through The Haverstraw Tunnel, Dan Streible

The Journal of e-Media Studies

The American Mutoscope Company’s The Haverstraw Tunnel was one of the most popular screenings of 1897, inspiring ecstatic rhetoric in descriptions of the experience of watching the original “phantom ride” train film. Historians appropriated such language (“an unseen energy swallows up space”) to theorize about early cinema. Yet until 2020, this significant production was difficult to see. The one-minute recording was shot and projected on large-format 68mm film stock, producing a high-resolution image as seen from the front of an express train traveling along the Hudson River. This essay recounts the archival research process abetted by the Library of Congress …

Learning To See On The Screen: Exploring Female Performance In Early Film Through The Media Ecology Project, Victoria Duckett Jan 2024

Learning To See On The Screen: Exploring Female Performance In Early Film Through The Media Ecology Project, Victoria Duckett

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This article argues that the development of digital research and teaching platforms are changing the ways we understand and approach audiovisual archives today. Focusing on the Media Ecology’s Semantic Annotation Tool (SAT) and its application to early film, it proposes that this new digital humanities resource profoundly impacts our understanding of female achievement in the development of the nascent cinema. Making reiterative viewing of a single shot or sequence of shots possible, the SAT evidences the importance of access to screen content in archives, the significance of reviewing physical agency on film in conjunction with technical and other developments, and …

Food Insecurity Amongst College Students: A Survey-Based Study On Student Perceptions And Assessment Of Food Security And Food Sovereignty On Campus, Matthew Labelle, Alissar Sobh, Rebecca D. Neusner Jan 2024

Food Insecurity Amongst College Students: A Survey-Based Study On Student Perceptions And Assessment Of Food Security And Food Sovereignty On Campus, Matthew Labelle, Alissar Sobh, Rebecca D. Neusner

Directed Experiential Education Final Project

Food insecurity is a growing issue on college campuses across the United States. Specifically, as student demographics shift away from full-time college students to part-time students with less disposable income, there are rising concerns about the nutrition, quality, and access to food on campus. Our research group was tasked with assessing, analyzing, and evaluating the food security and food systems of the Johnson & Wales University’s Harborside Campus. To this extent, we developed an anonymous questionnaire to poll students on their food sources and the quality of those food sources. To start, the questionnaire gathered basic demographic data such as …

Since 2017, the Strengthening Colors of Pride (SCoP) coalition, made up of LGBTQIA+ researchers, activists, and impacted community members, has set out to understand the lived experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender and sexual minority (LGBTQ+) people in the San Antonio Metro Area. SCoP’s first major project, the San Antonio LGBTQ+ 2020 Community Survey and State of Our Community Report, provided much-needed insight into the demographics, financial stability, and resiliency of LGBTQ+ people in the area while uncovering glaring disparities in housing & homelessness, employment, education, and health among LGBTQ+ San Antonians compared to their non-LGBTQ+ …

Gender Gap And Decline In Female Labour Force Participation In India: A Joint Search Perspective, Monisankar Bishnu, S Chandrasekhar, Srinivasan Murali Jan 2024

Gender Gap And Decline In Female Labour Force Participation In India: A Joint Search Perspective, Monisankar Bishnu, S Chandrasekhar, Srinivasan Murali

Working Papers

India, on top of having a large gender gap in labour force participation, also experienced a significant decline in participation rate of women in the recent years. In order to understand, and to decompose the gender gap and the decline in female labour force participation into demand and supply side factors, we present an equilibrium joint search model of couples with gender-specific wage offers and home productivities. In this heterogeneous agents setup, our counterfactual exercises show that, gender disparities in labour demand can account for only 6.4% of the level difference, while the differential trends in labour demand can explain …

Adsorption Of Perfluoroalkyl Substances With Activated Carbon: Characterizing Non-Hazardous Simulants, Jennifer Hensley Jan 2024

Adsorption Of Perfluoroalkyl Substances With Activated Carbon: Characterizing Non-Hazardous Simulants, Jennifer Hensley

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are of great interest recently because some members of this class exhibit human health risks at extremely low levels, making them the current subject of proposed regulation and policy. Treatment of PFAS contaminated wastewater often is performed through adsorptive processes, e.g., with activated carbon. Due to complexities with PFAS laboratory analysis, assessing treatment efficacy through direct measurement of PFAS is expensive and time consuming, potentially delaying the design and implementation of site-specific treatment systems. This project identified and characterized potential suitable simulants for PFAS during wastewater treatment for which analysis can be timely and economical. …

Production Of Cerium Oxide And Zinc Sulfide Composites, Ted Autore

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Zinc sulfide has an infrared cutoff in the LWIR, but its low hardness makes it susceptible to rain erosion and abrasion. A composite of cerium oxide and zinc sulfide that retains an infrared cutoff in the LWIR, and with hardness higher than pure zinc sulfide is a potential solution to the rain erosion and abrasion issue. Several different processes were undertaken in this project to produce such a composite. The different reactions between ZnS and CeO2 were researched, along with the effects of different processing parameters. Composite samples were made that had a better hardness than zinc sulfide but did …

Eukaryotic SSB, also known as replication protein A (RPA), is a single-stranded DNA binding protein that is highly conserved in eukaryotes. It is essential in multiple cellular functions such as DNA replication, repair, recombination, and cell cycle checkpoint signaling. Studying SSB’s or RPA’s checkpoint functions in cells is challenging due to its crucial role in cell survival. Exploring this possibility, we performed an extensive genetic screening of ssb1, which encodes the largest subunit of RPA, looking for nonlethal mutants that lack the checkpoint function. This screen has identified 25 primary mutants that are sensitive to genotoxins namely HU and MMS. …

The Impact Of Body Image On Self-Confidence In Elite Dancers, Carissa Bethel Jan 2024

The Impact Of Body Image On Self-Confidence In Elite Dancers, Carissa Bethel

Applied Sport & Performance Psychology | Literature Reviews

In athletics and the performing arts, athletes and performers are expected to maintain a healthy, strong, and athletic physique. Specific professions foster a thin body image amongst athletes, which are expected to be maintained. Pressure to maintain low weight or an athletic body has been considered a risk factor for developing body image dissatisfaction (Nascimento, Luna, Fontenelle, 2012). Previous research has shown that from a health perspective body satisfaction is one of the crucial factors in the prevention of unhealthy, weight related behaviors, especially in female athletes (Kantanista et al., 2018). The research addresses body image concerns in elite performance …

Factors That Influence The Prevalence Of Food Allergy In Children Born In Industrialized Countries Vs. Developing Countries: A Literature Review & Feasibility Study, Dimitri Miguel Lacson Torres Jan 2024

Factors That Influence The Prevalence Of Food Allergy In Children Born In Industrialized Countries Vs. Developing Countries: A Literature Review & Feasibility Study, Dimitri Miguel Lacson Torres

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background

Food allergy (FA) is known to be more prevalent in industrialized countries compared to developing countries. FA is a chronic disease that can cause a range of symptoms from regional urticaria to lethal anaphylaxis. FA affects 10% of the general population and is more common in children, affecting 8% of children versus 3% of adults (Seth, D. et al., 2020). It is unclear why food allergy is more common in industrialized countries versus developing countries. Research Question What are the influential factors that affect the increasing incidence of food allergy in toddlers born in industrialized countries versus those that …

History In Fragments: What Does A Photogenetic Line Tell Us About Dialectical Images?, Santasil Mallik Jan 2024

History In Fragments: What Does A Photogenetic Line Tell Us About Dialectical Images?, Santasil Mallik

FIMS Publications

The essay explores how the composition of the photo-architectural installation A Photogenetic Line (2019) by the Mumbai-based CAMP studio redounds in stretching Walter Benjamin’s multiform conceptual schema of the ‘dialectical image’ on two essential fronts: the flash-like nature of its appearance and its monadic configuration. Decoding this function proffered by the installation, in turn, reveals a revisionary historical materialist approach that rearticulates the question of violence in light of resurgent authoritarian populisms in South Asia.
