Getting The Best Out Of Joint Warfighter Development, Charles Davis, Jeffrey Turner, Mary Bell
Getting The Best Out Of Joint Warfighter Development, Charles Davis, Jeffrey Turner, Mary Bell
Research & Publications
Is the Department of Defense (DOD) producing the best joint warfighters possible? During strategic competition that increasingly ebbs toward conflict, joint warfighting and joint warfighter development are more important than ever. Joint warfighter development is the catalyst necessary for the U.S. military to conduct joint operations. Joint operations, where forces from different military departments are interoperable and interdependent, convey a marked advantage over potential adversaries and leave them with few military options to counter. Joint operations leverage the unique capabilities of each DOD Service, but they require joint-minded leaders—joint warfighters—who can collaboratively orient toward common objectives rather than fighting separate …
Humanitarian Intervention: Motivations And Norms In Cases Of Genocide, Jaelynn Thomas
Humanitarian Intervention: Motivations And Norms In Cases Of Genocide, Jaelynn Thomas
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
In 1948, the international community came together and promised to “prevent and punish” genocides under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Genocide Convention). Despite the Genocide Convention’s commitment to humanitarian intervention, states are selective and inconsistent in intervention. While there are many case studies done on state motivation for intervention, statistical studies are rarely done and a system for predicting what variables will likely produce humanitarian intervention on a wide scale has not been explored. This study uses a Cross-Sectional Time Series Estimator Model to track whether states were more likely to intervene in …

Evaluating Medium Decision Tree Model, Support Vector Machine Rational Quadratic Gaussian Process Regression To Estimate The Total Organic Carbon Of Shale Gas Reservoirs, Attia Attia, Sayed Gomaa, Mohamed Mongy Eng., Ramadan Emara Prof., Ashraf Fahmy Prof.
Petroleum Engineering and Gas
As a result of an energy crisis due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, the eyes of great countries such as America and others began to turn strongly towards exploiting unconventional resources to increase the oil and gas production. The first step in exploiting unconventional sources is to estimate the Total Organic Carbon (TOC). TOC measurements are expensive as well as time consuming, as samples of cuttings or core samples must be present to do the required lab tests. This issue encouraged the researchers to develop mathematical correlation to estimate the TOC. The paper aims at evaluating three of machine learning models …
Smu Launches Urban Institute Focused On The Study Of Asian Cities, Singapore Management University
Smu Launches Urban Institute Focused On The Study Of Asian Cities, Singapore Management University
SMU Press Releases and News
As Asian cities urbanise at an unprecedented rate, urban policy-makers face the increasingly complex and pressing challenge of balancing urban growth with resilience and sustainability. With migration and the rapid flow of ideas online, old and new city-making practices have become uncomfortably entwined, resulting in contestation for space, resources, and municipal services. In response to megatrends that underscore the critical need to prioritise urban research, Singapore Management University (SMU) today launched the SMU Urban Institute (UI), a new research institute dedicated to multi- and inter-disciplinary research on cities in Asia. SMU UI will look beyond the development of infrastructure, and …
Prisons As Laboratories Of Antidemocracy, Brandon Hasbrouck
Prisons As Laboratories Of Antidemocracy, Brandon Hasbrouck
Scholarly Articles
Prisons are woefully ineffective as tools to protect society from violence and exploitation, yet America’s prison population exploded in the twentieth century. On the outside, this devastated Black communities, Black opportunities, Black economic power, and Black voting power. Yet a similarly insidious development came from inside prison walls: prison administrators honed antidemocratic techniques for constraining and oppressing incarcerated persons, techniques that would later be deployed against the ostensibly free population. Jeffrey Bellin’s Mass Incarceration Nation provides a robust analysis of the ways state and federal policies have combined to create an explosion in the scope of American prisons in the …
Girl Child Marriage And Governing Party Ideology: Evidence From India, Divya Kapoor
Girl Child Marriage And Governing Party Ideology: Evidence From India, Divya Kapoor
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Although India has made significant advances in reducing girl-child marriage compared to other countries in South Asia, one in three of the world’s child brides still lives in the country. The literature on girl child marriage focuses mainly on the effects of socioeconomic factors and examines the implications of child marriage. I argue that, in addition to socioeconomic factors, the practice of girl-child marriage may be explained by political factors. My study focuses on the case of India and examines the impact of political factors at the legislative assembly constituency (AC) level in two states with varying political traditions and …

A Roadmap To Nil And Taxation, Doron Narotzki, Yariv Brauner
A Roadmap To Nil And Taxation, Doron Narotzki, Yariv Brauner
American University Business Law Review
The landscape of college sports has dramatically changed in recent years. What was once considered a place for amateur athletes pursuing education now partially mirrors, at least for some student-athletes, the structure and financial dynamics of professional leagues such as the NFL, NBA, and MLB. However, the collegiate sports ecosystem still remains distinct, shaped by unique regulatory frameworks governed by the NCAA. This article reviews and analyses the implications of these changes, and focuses on the tax considerations surrounding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights and how the evolving nature of college sports also presents certain tax implications, some of …

Theses & ETDs
The basis of this project was the researching, establishing, and conducting of a student-run enterprise specializing in the delivery of multimedia services (IE film, photography, sound) working with real-world clients. Our primary purpose was to immerse ourselves in the professional industry of media production and to learn the nuanced dynamics and hard and soft skills the industry requires, with the intent of utilizing direct experience as a form of self-directed education. Simultaneously, we created a tangible body of work and built a network within our community. We created an enterprise called Open Circle Media, complete with its own website, branding …
A Mindfulness Approach To Regulate Depressive-Associated Emotional Eating, Jillian G. Montefusco
A Mindfulness Approach To Regulate Depressive-Associated Emotional Eating, Jillian G. Montefusco
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Depression affects 350 to 500 million people globally, with depressive-associated emotional eating (DAEE) impacting approximately 43.5% of these individuals. Depressive-associated emotional eating contributes to obesity through poor dietary choices and weight gain, leading to the projection that by 2048 all United States citizens will be overweight or obese.
Local Problem: At a Chicago weight loss center, the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire screened 75 patients, revealing that 56% (N = 42) ate more during sadness, boredom, and loneliness, and 50.7% (N = 38) ate more during depression, indicating significant DAEE.
Methods: This quasi-experimental quality improvement project uses a pre- and post-evaluation …
Contrast Media In Computed Tomography, Reagan Harrison
Contrast Media In Computed Tomography, Reagan Harrison
Student Research Poster Presentations 2024
This project explains the use of contrast media in Computed Tomography (CT). Intravenous and oral are the two types of contrast media discussed in detail, including information on injection rates and volumes. Other topics covered include common studies using contrast media such as head and abdomen/pelvis imaging, adverse reactions and their severity, common risk factors, routes of premedication, general facts and statistics, and possible future developments. It is estimated that over 100 million studies are performed using contrast media per year. Contrast agents are useful in computed tomography due to their ability to opacify internal structures for easier viewing. This …

Diagnosing Ovarian Cancer Through Computed Tomography, Olivia Kempf
Student Research Poster Presentations 2024
Ovarian cancer (OC) is an aggressive gynecological disease that appears as a mass on ovaries, often spreading throughout the body. This project explains ovarian cancer and the role of computed tomography (CT) in diagnosing the disease. Diagnostic procedures, symptoms, pathology, staging criteria, and treatment options are also discussed. Affecting females, it is the seventh most common cancer paired with the highest mortality rate. The risk of developing ovarian cancer in one’s lifetime is about 1 in 87. Computed tomography provides a comprehensive cross-sectional evaluation of the genitourinary system. As such, CT is a valuable Medical Imaging modality for the evaluation …

Treatment And Diagnosis Of Pulmonary Emboli In Ct, Jacob Gardner
Student Research Poster Presentations 2024
This research project elaborates on the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary emboli, and how computed tomography can provide a quick and accurate diagnosis. Statistics, symptoms, computed tomography pulmonary angiography protocol, and pulmonary emboli radiographic appearance are also discussed to provide information on how a diagnosis is achieved and which treatment is used. Pulmonary emboli are a life-threatening condition that, if untreated, can potentially be fatal. Pulmonary emboli are the third most frequently occurring cause of cardiovascular death behind a stroke and myocardial infarction. Deaths in the United States from pulmonary emboli are approximately 300,000 deaths per year. In addition, 5-10% …
The Effects Of Bisphenol S On Glial Cells Of The Peripheral Nervous System, Madeline Solomon, Rachael Sennett, Angela Asirvatham
The Effects Of Bisphenol S On Glial Cells Of The Peripheral Nervous System, Madeline Solomon, Rachael Sennett, Angela Asirvatham
Student Research Poster Presentations 2024
Schwann cells are glial cells in the peripheral nervous system that maintain nerve function and myelination. Peripheral nerve myelination is dependent on intact Schwann cell proliferation. Schwann cell proliferation can be adversely affected by environmental pollutants such as Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is an endocrine-disrupting chemical found in plastic water bottles, receipt paper, containers, and many everyday products. Studies on BPA exposure showed that it stimulated cellular proliferation in neural stem cells. A commonly used manufactured derivative of BPA, Bisphenol S (BPS), has posed similar concerns. Previous research has found that BPS promotes the proliferation of MCF-7 breast cancer cells …
The Effects Of Bpf On Rt4 Schwannoma Cancer Cells, Rachael Sennett, Madeline Solomon, Angela Asirvatham
The Effects Of Bpf On Rt4 Schwannoma Cancer Cells, Rachael Sennett, Madeline Solomon, Angela Asirvatham
Student Research Poster Presentations 2024
Bisphenol A is a harmful compound common in plastics that causes negative health and environmental effects. Due to these effects, new guidelines have been made to limit exposure to BPA. However, modified versions of these compounds, including Bisphenol-F, are being used as a replacement. Exposure to BPF, which is comparable in structure to BPA, has similar effects as BPA on many organ systems with some being unknown. As there is not much known about BPF, especially in the peripheral nervous system, the aim of this research is to analyze proliferation rates in BPF-treated Schwann cells. It was hypothesized that with …
The Harmful Effects Of Living In Brick Kiln Communities In The South Asia Region, Cambrie Ball
The Harmful Effects Of Living In Brick Kiln Communities In The South Asia Region, Cambrie Ball
Ballard Brief
Across South Asia, brick kilns pose significant health challenges, socioeconomic disparities, and environmental degradation due to hazardous air quality and exploitative labor practices. The poor infrastructure of kiln sites contributes to dangerous working and living conditions for laborers and their families, which remain unregulated due to the sector’s informal nature. These kilns emit substantial amounts of pollutants, including particulate matter and carbon dioxide, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and premature deaths. Furthermore, indoor air pollution from burning solid fuels exacerbates health risks, particularly for women and children. Poverty and low wages persist among kiln workers, with many trapped in …

“That They May Once Again Be A Delightsome People”: The Concept Of Again Becoming The Seed Of Joseph (Words Of Mormon 1:8 And Mormon 7:4–5), Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In Words of Mormon 1:8, Mormon declares, “And my prayer to God is concerning my brethren, that they may once again come to the knowledge of God, yea, the redemption of Christ; that they may once again be a delightsome people.” The expression “that they may once again” plausibly reflects the Hebrew idiom wayyôsipû or wayyôsipû ʿôd. Mormon’s apparent double-use of the wayyôsipû (ʿôd) idiom in Words of Mormon 1:8 (or some Nephite scribal equivalent), like 2 Nephi 5:2–3, recalls language in the Joseph story (Genesis 37:5, 8). The original Lamanite covenant, as an extension of the Abrahamic covenant, involved …
The Eucharist Of The Latter-Day Saints: The Sacrament In The Broader Christian Context, Robin Douglas
The Eucharist Of The Latter-Day Saints: The Sacrament In The Broader Christian Context, Robin Douglas
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
This paper views the sacrament prayers and rituals of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the broader context of Christian eucharistic worship, focusing on how the Latter-day Saint observances both resemble and differ from those of other Christian communities. It argues that, contrary to what is often supposed, the Church has a relatively “high” eucharistic theology.
