Prophet Or Loss: Mosiah1/Zeniff, Benjamin/Noah, Mosiah2/Limhi And The Emergence Of The Almas, Val Larsen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Mormon’s overwhelmingly dominant rhetorical purpose is to testify of Christ, which he and his protagonists often directly do. But he also communicates his testimony more subtly through carefully crafted historical narratives. His use of frame narratives is especially artful. In the Book of Mosiah, Mormon frames the dispiriting account of Zeniff and Noah’s rule with the story of its aftermath: the suffering of Limhi and his people, which is recounted both before and after the central Zeniff/Noah narrative and which underscores the folly in the narrative it frames. An Analysis Of The Financial Incentives In Attacking The Restoration, Ron C. Rhodes

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

With the popularity of social media growing exponentially, prominent critics of the Church are leveraging the platforms, particularly YouTube, as a key resource to produce thousands of negative videos about the Church. Indigenous Assimilation And Progressive Mirages: The Globalization Of American Narratives Of Educational Reform, Madhu Narayanan Jan 2024

Indigenous Assimilation And Progressive Mirages: The Globalization Of American Narratives Of Educational Reform, Madhu Narayanan

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 1928, the Institute for Government Research released the Meriam Report, a massive study of the nation’s Native Americans. Unflinchingly rational, the report criticized federal policy, but it also set a high-minded vision for Native American progress. Celebrated by the press at the time, hailed by historians in the following decades (Bertolet, 2007; Kelly, 1983, Philp, 1977, Szasz, 1974; Downs, 1945), the report became perceived as a turning point in the treatment of Native Americans and signaled a renewed faith in government. A century later, these reforms appear as mirages. In this paper, I show how the Meriam Report cloaks …

Corporate Governance & International Law, Kishanthi Parella Jan 2024

Corporate Governance & International Law, Kishanthi Parella

Scholarly Articles

Stakeholder activism by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), consumers, employees, and others can incentivize corporate managers to comply with international law on climate change, armed conflict, human rights, and access to medicine, among other issues. As such, stakeholder enforcement of international law has two distinct audiences: the corporation that is persuaded to change and fellow stakeholders who are persuaded to act. But familiar difficulties with collective action impede the success of stakeholder enforcement of international law. These challenges can compromise the ability of shareholders to monitor corporations; these same problems similarly jeopardize the ability of stakeholders to monitor corporate compliance with international …
